According to various French Windows Phone enthusiast sites, the update brings some serious performance improvements in addition to copy and paste. We've go the full scoop and details on Windows Phone 8. According to Intel, series 6 i5 and i7 chips are affected by a Sandy Bridge flaw. A flaw which gradually degrades the performance of the SATA ports over time, eventually affecting the speed of hard drives and optical drives. Here's what you need to know. Virgin Media bumping top speeds to 30Mbps Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:01 PM PST Virgin Media is bumping up its top broadband speeds from 20Mbps to 30Mbps. The new 30Mbps will replace the existing 20Mbps with a new service called XL, starting from today. The extra speeds will be available for a one off fee of £30, which pays for activation, and a new router that’s bombastically titled the Virgin Media Super Hub. Virgin won’t be selling you 30Mbps unless you’re in an area that can handle it though: if you’re with Virgin, you should get within a 10% advertised range of the speed you’ve been sold. Will you upgrade to Virgin Media 30Kbps? Click through to shout out in the comments! Related posts: |
Nintendo’s Pokemon bluetooth keyboard works with Android and iOS Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:00 PM PST Apparently the upcoming bluetooth keyboard for Nintendo's 'Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS' game supports both Android and iOS devices. If you've been looking for an alternative to Apple's bluetooth keyboard while maintaining your Nintendo gaming roots, this could be your ticket. In a Nintendo press release this afternoon, the gaming giant released the first image of the bluetooth keyboard for 'Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS'. The game follows the same basic concept as Mavis Beacon typing programs — users learn to type through entertaining challenges, only this involves a Nintendo DS and not a PC. According to ohgizmo.com, the keyboard cannot be used for other titles that require typing — only 'Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS' on your DS. Since the Nintendo DS lacks internal bluetooth connectivity, the keyboard kit also includes some sort of dongle to enable the functionality. Also, the keyboard "works just fine with iPhone and Android based smartphones". 'Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS' is slate for an April release in Japan — no word on other release dates. If you've been looking for a new keyboard for your iPhone, iPad or Android handset, the Nintendo bluetooth keyboard is certainly worth a look. via OhGizmo Related posts: |
Intel Sandy Bridge chipset flaw, desktop PC shipments delayed Posted: 31 Jan 2011 03:00 PM PST At CES 2011, Intel's new Sandy Bridge processors took center stage, dominating laptop announcements and quickly winning over our hearts. Unfortunately, today Intel confirmed a serious bug in the Cougar Point chipset that will delay desktop PCs using its Sandy Bridge processors. According to Intel, series 6 i5 and i7 chips are affected by the Sandy Bridge flaw. A flaw which gradually degrades the performance of the SATA ports over time, eventually affecting the speed of hard drives and optical drives. In order to fix the problem, the hardware needs to be adjusted at the factory — a software update will not do the trick. So here's the deal — under normal testing the flaw in the Cougar Point chipset did not manifest itself. Subsequent, extreme stress testing revealed that under normal usage, the problem would become noticeable after "two to four years". Rather than waiting, Intel wants to address the issue now and prevent a future recall of chipsets. Since only quad core i5 and i7 chips are affected by the Sandy Bridge flaw, Intel does not expect the problem to hurt its full-year revenue and an updated version of the chips are scheduled for late February. Nevertheless, Intel cut its first quarter revenue forecast by $300 million and expects the total cost to repair and replace the chips to be about $700 million. With Intel processors being used by 80 percent of the world's PCs, the defect in the Cougar Point chipset affecting Sandy Bridge processors is quite unfortunate. We've heard rumors that Apple would update their iMac and MacBook pro lines "very soon", so hopefully Intel sorts things out sooner rather than later. Tell us what you think about the Sandy Bridge flaw. Is the AMD Fusion technology now a more attractive proposition? via Reuters Related posts: |
Windows Phone 7 copy and paste lands Feb 7th Posted: 31 Jan 2011 02:00 PM PST The worlds of copy and paste are rumored to be landing as soon as February 7th on Windows Phone 7. First spotted by our friends at liveside.net, a variety of French Windows Phone enthusiast websites have outed the release details — here's the scoop. It's a bit ironic that in 2007 when the iPhone launched, the harshest critics believed the lack of copy and paste to be a critical flaw. Today, Windows Phone 7 users experience a similar fait, but according to many insiders — this will change on February 7th, just a week before Mobile World Congress 2011. The February 7th update is code named "nodo" (for no donuts) and in addition to copy and paste support, it also brings performance improvements to the table. According to French website megados.com, the performance improvements can by attributed to better "resource utilization" and "memory for fast loading of applications". The update will also include support for "Qualcomm chips 7 X 30". The predictions do not stop there, in fact megados.com also confirmed the second Windows Phone 7 update will be released in September 2011, followed by a third update in "late 2012". Windows Phone 8, code named Appolis will also be released in late 2012, around the same time as the third update for Windows Phone 7. In US smartphone news, the latest NDP figures suggest that in Q4 2010, "Windows Phone 7 OS claimed less market share than its predecessor, Windows Mobile". In terms of percentages, NDP Group reported iOS holds 19 percent market share, RIM 19 percent, Windows Mobile four percent, Windows Phone 7 two percent, and webOS two percent. With two million Windows Phone 7 units shipped worldwide, there will certainly be an audience for the February 7th update. Despite the meager US market share reported by NDP Group, Windows Phone 7 remains an exciting proposition. You've heard what we think about WP7 in our Dell Venue Pro review and later, eclipse our top handset list. Now, who else is excited for the Windows Phone 7 update? Android tablets eat 20 percent of iPad market share Posted: 31 Jan 2011 12:28 PM PST Apple's iron-clad grip on the tablet market is beginning to loosen as fourth quarter market share reports show the iPad captured 75.3 percent, down from 95.5 percent a quarter ago. Walking away with 21.6 percent market share were Android tablets, exploding from their meager 2.3 percent in the third quarter. Fueled by a reported two million Galaxy Tabs shipped in 2010, Android tablets accounted for 13.1 percent of total 2010 tablet market share. Apple's iPad on the other hand, accounted for 84.1 percent. With dozens of Android tablets planned for 2011, Apple will face even stiffer competition. Unfortunately, percentages do not tell the entire story. 2010 was a blockbuster year for Apple, selling 7.3 million iPads in the fourth quarter, up from the 4.2 million units in the third . In total, Apple shipped 14.8 million iPads worldwide in 2010 which significantly overshadows Samsung two million Galaxy Tabs. The latest IDC estimates expect over 44 million tablets to be shipped in 2011, up exponentially from the 17 million shipped in 2010. Whether you choose Android or iOS for your tablet future there's certainly no shortage of devices, just take a look at our CES 2011 coverage. In other Android tablet news, a successful port of Android 3.0 Honeycomb to the Nook Color has been completed. Also, DigiTimes is reporting that the Motorola XOOM will be released "as early as February". Other Android Honeycomb tablets will launch "after March". With Motorola expected to have a month-long head start, the next market share report will be the true test for the iPad 2. Anyone care to guess what market share Android tablets will reach in the next report? via CNet Related posts: |
Honda’s “This Unpredictable Life” app brings screen hopping to iPhone Posted: 31 Jan 2011 11:45 AM PST Honda's new TV advert for "This Unpredictable Life' will take augmented reality from the TV screen to your iPhone. Using "screen hopping" technology, this will be the world's first app that allows characters from a commercial to transfer across another device with complete interaction. Augmented reality on a smartphone is nothing new. However, unlike previous attempts in the field which use augmented reality markers and QR codes, "This Unpredictable Life" app is constantly listening to the commercial. The "screen hopping" experience uses advanced audio recognition technology to sync the app with the advert's soundtrack, "allowing the user to interact with what's happening in the ad in real time". If your reaction speeds and sharp eyes are up to the task, there are four characters to 'catch' from the ad. As you can see in the video above, simply swing your iPhone at the screen and you're off. Here's a breakdown of the characters and attributes: - An evolving pet with a beautiful trail; shake your phone to choose the Rabbit, Cat or Parrot Honda's "This Unpredictable Life" app looks to build the buzz brewing for the Honda Jazz, one of the UK's most popular small family vehicles. With roots in Swindon, Wiltshire, and over 220,000 car sold, Honda continues to lead the pack in innovative advertising technology. The app is free to download from the App Store, simply search "Honda Jazz – This Unpredictable Life". The TV advert premieres on February 1st at 21.45 on ITV1 and Channel 4. Best iPhone apps of the month: January 2011 Posted: 31 Jan 2011 09:22 AM PST We’ve got the best iPhone apps of the month for you ready and waiting right here: iOS owners, come and tuck in on our shortlist of excellence from our weekly roundups.
Without further ado, let’s crack on with the five finest apps to appear on the App Store this month, whittled down from our weekly columns. You know how to get’em: just hit the iTunes link. Splice £1.19 without ads | iTunes We have already elevated the iMovie iPhone app to the best iPhone apps library but it looks like it will have a new rival on the virtual shelf where the video editing apps are filed. Splice is just as fully featured as iMovie and handles transitions in a more intuitive way. It’s also available in both a paid version (no ads) and a free version (subtle ads). A definite thumbs up from us. Trillian £2.99 | iTunes There are many IM apps for the iPhone but Trillian is easily the best we’ve used. It’s really feature-filled and has a free Mac counterpart which is available from the Mac App Store. We know £2.99 is quite pricey, but it’s easily one of the best iPhone apps for the task. Camera+ £1.10 | iTunes Camera+ is an excellent upgrade to the standard iPhone camera app. There’s a tonne of features in the app including the ability to seperately set focus and exposure, a timer for self-portraits, burst mode and a handy grid for lining up shots. This is another easy entry into the photography section of best iPhone apps. DropIt £free | iTunes
Another incredibly simple app, DropIt lets you download files from the web straight to your Dropbox account. That’s what it does and boy does it do it well. £1.19 iTunes The retro iPhone camera apps like Hipstamatic ruled 2010 but this is 2011 and our new favourite use of the iPhone 4’s camera is 8mm Vintage Camera, one of the best iPhone apps for video we’ve seen so far with the ability to add antique film effects on the fly.
