Posted: 18 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST In case my title wasn’t obvious enough, this is the Ant Table by Oliver Nikolic – a modern take on a coffee table that emphasizes simplicity and functionality by using simple materials; wood and glass. Two tabletops at different levels are connected with gently curved legs. Look closely and you may see how it got its name. It’s an ideal compliment to any contemporary living space and every aspect of the design expresses a simplicity that gives it a timless qualitty. Designer: Oliver Nikolic ---------- |
Posted: 18 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST This is no run-of-the-mill Mercedes. This is a design exercise that pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s racing history. The streamlined body is supposed to evoke airplanes, speed and movement. I love looking at exploratory sketches because you can get a feel on what designer Peter Vardai was thinking. As he evolved each shape, the decision to “TRON” out the design seemed like a good idea. Audi just released an official concept so why not Mercedes too? Idea and Design: Peter Vardai ---------- |
Refreshing Bench at Your Service Posted: 18 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST It’s taken a lot of designers to come up with this idea, so I guess we better humor them! What we have here is a public bench called Fresh Chair, a place where you can stop and rest. An integrated plant-world coexists with the comfort zone and is used to trap and harness energy to power LEDs as night lights. They also provide a cooling mist during the summer heat. Maybe they can replace the lush palm trees dotting Dubai with Fresh Chair, what do you think? Posted: 18 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST No I’m for real, “External Light” is a concept floor lamp that relies on you to mop your floors regularly to store kinetic energy to power the lamp integrated into the entire length of the stick. Novel idea but there’s a deeper meaning. Designer Arthur Xin is one designer on spiritual journey and his work represents a symbolic way of mopping up the bad to create positive energy. Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:09 AM PST Instead of using all that precious and energy-wasting metal in the construction of a scale, why not use water? That’s what the designer of this fabulous project thought, then he brought it to life – Water Scale, a scale that uses Archimedes' Principle in a simple container to create just what he thought of in his mind. The object that is to be weighed is placed ont he scale plate which then sinks into the water in proportion to its mass, overflowing the water which then moves up through channel under the water reservoir. The weight of the object is measured with water and the plastic bead in the channel. This scale can weigh objects up to 1000 grams, and is more economical and lighter than most electric and mechanical scales in the market. Plus no electricity, no energy consumption – green. Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST This design is called Vessel, it’s a bathtub that without a doubt uniquely floats above the ground, letting you bathe in an environment unlike anything you’ve been in before. What’s the benefit? You mean what’s the benefit other than it’s completely amazing and there’s nothing else like it? This new design uses carbon-fibre technology developed for the autosport and aerospace industries to bring you fine surfaces unlike any comfortable place you’ve been to with your bare butt. This new carbon-fibre the designers are speaking about is made for much grander stages, or is it? What do you consider a more important place – autosport and aerospace, or your own home? Extremely fine surfaces are found in exploiting the inherent rigidity of layered carbon fibre. Envelop yourself in the “Vessel.” Stainless steel, carbon fibre and gold leaf Designer: SplinterWorks ---------- |
Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST There can never ever be too large an amount of inventions to work with the greatest of these – the bicycle. Today’s design is a very simple case that attaches to the pole underneath your seat. This design is called BelowFour and can contain any number of different things, coming in a variety of colors, too! Perfect for you hipsters and hipsters at heart, as well as the rest of the working world. Not only is it stylish and perfect to carry in your hand as well as on your bike, it’s refrigerated too! That black bit you see wrapping around the middle is a strap holding the box together, and the bit you hold in your hand can be clipped and unclipped with ease so you don’t have to take your seat off each time you want to transfer the case. Lovely! Designer: Ilya Fridman ---------- |
