HTC Desire 2, Flyer, Pyramid, LG Optimus 3D, Star Tab Appear in Inventory Lists Posted: 05 Feb 2011 08:17 AM PST Dear sneaky ninja photographers, thank you so very much for your help in finding ways for early adopters to get pumped up earlier than was ever possible before. That said, the photos you’re about to lay eyes on, dear reader, were submitted to fonearena overnight, and they show no less than HTC Desire, HTC Flyer, HTC Pyramid, LG Optimus 3D, and a Star Tab in various inventory lists. Although we trust fonearena to be tossing out trustable info, and they say this source has been good in the past, there’s always the fact that these lists could quite easily have been replicated in any gridlike program for computing.
Regardless of that, this is exciting. HTC Desire 2 and HTC Pyramid which was only just rumored a couple days ago. HTC Flyer, a much looked forward to Android tablet. The LG Optimus 3D! Star Tab LG, looking like, as FoneArena suggests, the European version of the Optimus Pad. Most or all of these devices will be revealed in earnest at Mobile World Congress 2011, a set of events which we’ll be running around quickly to bring you news about all bits in time and with mighty excitement. Motorola Atrix 4G Receives AT&T Mobile Minute Treatment [Video] Posted: 04 Feb 2011 07:37 PM PST Our good pal Daniel is back to present the world with another “Mobile Minute” courtesy of the AT&T Social Media Team. This method for showing off Android smartphones was last used on the similar, but not the same, HTC Inspire 4G. In this video series the main fellow Daniel takes exactly 60 seconds to explain the phone at hand, making it extremely simple for basically anyone to understand what makes the phone great and worth buying. Daniel, you want a job at Android Community?
In this video, Daniel notes that the Atrix 4G has a 4 inch qHD display and weighs in at 4.8 ounces. This phone has a 2×1 GHz dual-core processor which Daniel says is “a first in the US.” It has 16 GB of onboard memory, upgradable by 48 GB by microSD card. Dual-mic noise reduction technology is in place to ensure excellent recording and call quality, and the phone runs on Android 2.2 Froyo with a Motoblur overlay. Atrix 4G has Flash installed, an onscreen QWERTY keyboard with SWYPE. The phone has fingerprint and security unlock modes as well as employing another “first in the US” feature: webtop application and entertainment center via the HD multimedia dock and laptop dock. Mobile hotspot can be set up to connect other devices to the internet via wifi “as long as they have the correct data plan.” The device has DLNA technology allowing the user to stream content wirelessly from itself over to other DLNA compatible devices. On the back of the Atrix 4G is a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, on the front is a secondary camera of unknown proportions for video chat. Check out the full video here: |
HTC Inspire 4G Presale at Radio Shack Posted: 04 Feb 2011 02:43 PM PST Radio Shack has announced that today they’ll be offering the HTC Inspire 4G for preorder. This phone will cost $99 attached to a 2 year agreement, and those who take the bait for this offer will also be granted a $30 credit toward accessories for the phone. What will that buy? Maybe a cloth to wipe off fingerprints? Perhaps a new microSD card with 2GB of space?
On the other hand, the Inspire 4G does seem to be shaping up to be a pretty slick handset. This Radio Shack deal only requires you to lay down $50 of the $100 the phone costs to reserve the phone. ALSO NOTE that this deal is NOT online. Have a look at this preview video and see if you’re fully convinced: [Via PhoneScoop] ) |
Angry Birds Valentines Expansion Called “Hogs and Kisses” Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:53 PM PST If you’re a fan of Angry Birds, and you know we are when we’re not feeling cynical, you’re pretty pumped up about the oncoming expansion to be released on Valentine’s Day. Very little has been known about this project, which up until this moment has been called “Pink.” What we know now, thanks to out best buddy Ina Fried, is that this Angry Birds expansion is called “Hogs and Kisses,” comes in HD for iPad (and hopefully something similar for Honeycomb,) as well as its standard Android and iPhone/iPod Touch versions, and apparently it’ll be out sooner than expected – next week soon!
We DID think it was a bit strange to release a holiday themed expansion for a game the day of the holiday – the feeling of warmth in your heart would only last one day! So this move does make a whole lotta sense. As you can see in the game, it appears to be essentially the same situation as we’ve had in previous expansion, the backgrounds of course different, and falling hearts (or floating hearts?) instead of the leaves or snow of previous holidays. There are some new bits, it seems, including wings attached to blocks, flying pigs with bows and arrows, and a few new bonus hearts (these being the same as pumpkins or presents in previous versions.) Also there’s cloud blocks, which we assume will work similar to snow blocks in their floatiness and ease in breaking. Check out the high-res gallery of screenshots below: [Via AllThingsD] ) |
Samsung Galaxy Tab Price Dropped on T-Mobile to $249.99 w/2-year plan Posted: 04 Feb 2011 01:20 PM PST For those of you still sitting on the branch about if you’d like to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Tab, now might be your best shot at grabbing it at its cheapest. You can now pick up the Samsung Galaxy Tab direct from T-Mobile for $249.99. You’ll of course need to pick up a 2 year agreement with the Tab, locking you in directly past the incoming wave of Gingerbread tablets this Summer.
You can head back to one of our reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Tab here or on SlashGear if you wish, we’ve gotten our hands on at least three different Tabs from three different carriers, and T-Mobile is definitely one of them. What do you think, Community, is it time to pick up a Tab, or is it way too late? If it’s right on time, head over to T-Mobile now! [Via SamsungMobileUSA Facebook] ) |
Galaxy S 2 Specs Leaked Specs from SamFirmware Posted: 04 Feb 2011 12:52 PM PST As you might already know, we’ve had some earlier possible specs leaked here and there on this long awaited followup to last years heavily successful Galaxy S line. This new phone has just today had a brand new set of specs leaked to the folks at SamFirmware – these are above and beyond the possible 4.3 inch or 4.5 inch screen and Orion Dual-core processor on board featuring 1.0 GHz or 1.2 GHz of power. What’s not known for certain is the rest. Let’s take a look.
What’s been told today is the following: Screensize : 4.3” or 4.5′, Super Amoled Plus screen, 8 Megapixel camera on the back with LED flash, 1.3 Megapixel camera on the front, Sd support of up to 32 GB, an Orion Dual Core 1.0 or 1.2 GHZ processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Bluetooth 3.0, coded as Samsung I9100, and it includes the future of mobile computing : NFC chip inside. And that’s about it! We’re still unsure of what the device will look like, what colors it might be (black,) or essentially anything else. Are you excited? We are so very excited. And ALSO it appears more than likely that this phone will be released at Mobile World Congress 2011, which we will definitely be at, bringing this info to you live. [Via SamFirmware] ) |
CyanogenMod 7 Gingerbread Now on Galaxy Tab Posted: 04 Feb 2011 12:18 PM PST The day has come, after so much waiting. Oh you didn’t expect this day to ever come? Perhaps you expected the Samsung Galaxy Tab to remain in Android 2.2 mode forever? How would you like to turn on some Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread lights in your lovely little Tab? Lucky you, Technomancer of XDA Forums has posted a path to CyanogenMod 7 for Galaxy Tab bringing you all the tasty Gingerbread your heart could desire.
Most of the basic functions appear to be working on this build, and the developer(s) working on this project are making pretty frequent updates. Any help in continuing to develop this hack is appreciated, so says Technomancer. If you plan on attempting to make this version of CyanogenMod work on your Galaxy Tab, you do so at your own risk, and any bricking, blasting, or melting will be attributed to you alone. That said, head over to the XDA thread for this mod and have some fun! [Via XDA Developers Forum] ) |
Posted: 04 Feb 2011 12:08 PM PST There is a permission inside the Android OS that, when called upon, can brick a phone. Should you fear this permission? No. It is essentially completely disabled in modern versions of Android, and even when it was able to take effect, only system apps were able to use it. Since it did at one time exist, let’s talk about it for a moment. One of the uses suggested by a reader of the new Reddit thread on this subject is that the permission might come in handy for users to be able to remotely brick their device should they ever lose it or have it stolen. Another idea is that hardware manufacturers might have control over what happens to the system installed in their devices, any attempts at hacking setting off this permission, bricking the device before the user has even gotten the chance to accidentally brick it his or herself!
Let’s expand this conversation to the potential backdoor open now via the Android Marketplace, as discovered by Naked Security. [Original thread here] The discovery revealed in that post is that, should a malicious individual gain access to your Google account while you’ve got your devices synced with Android Marketplace’s new web-based store, they’d be able to download whatever they want, directly to each and every one of your devices. What happens if this horrible hacker had access to your Google account and also had developed an app that bricked your device at the push of a button? Oh that would just be terrible. So very terrible. Lucky for you, these two situations don’t exist at the same time, this this combined nightmare will never happen. Continue on being happy and prosperous in this calm year of the rabbit. All is well. ) |
