RD Mute Silences Your Android with a Single Turn Posted: 07 Feb 2011 10:12 AM PST RD Mute is a cool app that uses a smartphones accelerometer to mute voice functions with a simple turning over of the phone. In addition, it will mute the phone should it sense that the user may be driving at speeds of over 30 miles an hour. And the best part is, it’s free.
Other cool features include loading up the App on start up, adjusting the speed to which the user wants to disable phone functions, and RD Mute only being active for incoming phone calls – which is nice for saving battery life (EVO users rejoice). And so your friends and co-workers won’t feel rebuffed that you’re not answering calls, RD Mute will even send a text message advising when you’re driving and can’t answer your phone. Froyo on the Motorola Defy can do 720 playback and record Posted: 07 Feb 2011 10:01 AM PST A member of the XDA Developers forums known as “-={antibyte}=-“, has managed to get his Motorola Defy to playback 720p HD video using Android 2.2 (Froyo). And not only that, he was also able to get it to record full screen with a resolution of 848×480. How he was able to accomplish this experiment was by using “adb” to install the playback file and folder to /system/lib directory. But he warns that it’s not for the faint of heart.
The forum member also warns that before doing anything like this yourself, that it’s only performed with Froyo and the understanding that it hasn’t been testing on any other handset. In addition, users are well advised to backup everything before trying. And those hoping to use “Recovery” to install the mod will have little luck. But giving HD playback to Froyo is a pretty cool step. More details on the procedure can be found at the forum post here. [Via XDA Developers] ) |
Sprint Kyocera Echo dual-touchscreen Android phone tipped for imminent reveal Posted: 07 Feb 2011 08:30 AM PST Sprint is expected to launch a dual-touchscreen smartphone made by Kyocera later today, pairing two 3.5-inch touchscreens and running Android. According to the WSJ, the Sprint Kyocera Echo has what’s described as a “pivot hinge” – presumably a double-hinged arrangement – which allows one screen to fold back against the other out of the way. We’re imagining something similar to Fujitsu’s prototype, shown here. According to the source, “users can accomplish multiple tasks on the two screens, or drag items from one screen to the other.” This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a dual-display Sprint device; leaks back in mid-January suggested the same thing, though the exact nature of the functionality is still unclear. Android Community will be at the Sprint event in a few hours time, so we’ll have all the details as they’re announced. ) |
6G Introduced by Ozzy and Bieber for Best Buy [video] [REVIEW] Posted: 07 Feb 2011 08:15 AM PST So you’ve an early adopter and you want to have your hands on the newest product, the quickest speed, the best means to have your hands on the data that’s rightfully yours. Best Buy has your back. They’ve got not only 4G, presented by Ozzy Osbourne – they’ve moved beyond that ancient foolishness. It’s time for 6G, as presented by futuristic TRON Justin Bieber. Pay attention to the weirdos in the background as well, as they’re changing position, form, and costume. Very Lady Gaga.
This is the commercial that was shown somewhere in the second half of the Superbowl, promoting Best Buy’s fabled Buyback program that’s apparently “free this week.” The point of this commercial is to play on the fact that not only does technology improve at an exponential rate, the products we use every day pop out right along with it. Ozzy and Bieber might never have been in any kind of Best Buy commercial on their own, but the thought of them being in one together was just too enticing a concept for Best Buy to pass up. Ozzy introduces 4G in a space suit and he’s given a new phone almost instantly since speeds have increased to 5G during the time the commercial is being filmed. Once he does a play on Crazy Train with this fabulous new 5G phone, he’s replaced entirely by Justin Beiber in a space suit with 6G, Beiber clearly representing the… generation after Ozzy? Skipped a few I think – that’s the point too of course. Then there’s a clever little treat at the end with an aged Beiber, and the package is complete. Well played, Best Buy. [Via The Superbowl] ) |
Huawei S7 Slim tablet promised for MWC 2011 Posted: 07 Feb 2011 06:28 AM PST Huawei has unveiled a new tablet ahead of MWC 2011, a slimline follow-up to its previous S7 budget slate. The Huawei S7 Slim has not been specified as yet – though we can see what looks to be a front-facing webcam – but we’re guessing it’s simply a thinner version of the 7-inch we looked at back in November. That’s a good thing, as while the S7 was reasonably specified, it was also pretty heavy; hopefully the Slim version will have shed some grams too. Android Community will be at Mobile World Congress next week, so we’ll be bringing you back all the details on this new entrant to the slate segment. [Thanks Carl!] ) |
eLocity 10-inch tablet hits pre-order Feb 15 Posted: 07 Feb 2011 06:14 AM PST If you liked what you saw in the eLocity A7 7-inch Android tablet pictured here, but wished it came with more resolution and a larger screen your wish is coming true. eLocity has announced that its larger 10-inch tablet will hit pre-order on February 15.

Android 2.4 Gingerbread update due April with dual-core app support Posted: 07 Feb 2011 05:36 AM PST Android 2.4 is apparently set to arrive in April 2011, though it’s supposedly set to still bear the Gingerbread name. According to Pocket-lint‘s sources at ViewSonic, Google has pulled forward the v2.4 release date so as to bring support for applications coded for dual-core devices – such as those running Android 3.0 Honeycomb – to single-core handsets, something Android 2.3 is currently unable to do. The news fits in with our own sources, who told Android Community back in January that Google was requesting manufacturers hold off from releasing Gingerbread 2.3 updates or devices until the start of Q2 2011. At the time it was suggested that Google’s move was to maintain the Nexus S’ exclusivity on the market as the sole Gingerbread smartphone, but it now seems the decision may have been to allow the company’s engineers time to ready Android 2.4. Interestingly, leaked images of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc showed the phone running v2.4, though the company later described that as an accidental glitch. The ViewSonic source also reckons – though this isn’t confirmed – that Android 3.1 will be the version to bear the Ice Cream name. ) |
Crochet your own Android robot Posted: 07 Feb 2011 05:06 AM PST I’ve never made any craft type stuff that required a needle and thread or yarn in this case. The extent of my sewing ability ends at putting a button back on a shirt. If you like crochet or would like to learn to crochet with a geeky project here it is.
Over on bethsco blog you can see a crocheted Droid mascot robot and the little guy is really cute and cool. The site was selling the things directly, but they are all sold out right now and on backorder for 2-3 weeks. Interestingly considering the site is selling the Android mascots is that the instructions to make your own are listed. The finished crochet bot is about 5.5″ tall and it appears the head, body, and legs are done separately and then attached in the end. All you need is some yarn, an H hook, and some skill. Skiver app helps you choose a good excuse to skip work Posted: 07 Feb 2011 04:26 AM PST It’s funny to me that despite the fact that Americans and Brits both speak English there is a language barrier. I had to get Chris to tell me what “hook snock” meant not too long ago (it’s the same as thumb your nose). Another strange word is Skiver, it apparently means one that skips work by playing sick.
A new app has turned up for Android that is perfect if you need to play some hooky from the office. The app asks pertinent question like how many days do you want off, helps you with your cover story like symptoms for specific ailments, and then it will help you find something to do while you skip work. The app uses Google Maps to find current activities in the area the user is in. You really don't need an app to get a good excuse to skip work. Tell the boss you have diarrhea, no one questions diarrhea. Via IntoMobile ) |
Notion Ink Adam update delivers bug-sweep; Users delighted [Video] Posted: 07 Feb 2011 04:04 AM PST Notion Ink has released a new firmware update for its Adam tablet, addressing multiple launch issues with the Tegra 2 slate and generally smoothing out the overall user-experience. According to Notion Ink Fan, the Eden UI panels are now more stable, browser tabs are more reliable, and the video player is less jumpy when you toggle play/pause. Meanwhile, Adam owner Shane Trafford – who you might recall was among the first wave of recipients – has sent in his own video demo of the Notion Ink slate doing its thing (which you can see below). Angry Birds Superbowl Code Revealed [SPOILER GUIDE] Posted: 07 Feb 2011 01:52 AM PST Angry Birds has been fluttering up a storm as of late with several stories including the release of 30 more levels in their standard game, a possibly leaked announcement about their upcoming Valentine’s Day addition to Angry Birds Seasons, and a big gigantic bit of news regarding the movie RIO. Starting yesterday, on Superbowl Sunday 2011, the film RIO began cross-promoting with the Angry Birds brand. They plan on creating an Angry Birds “RIO” version of the game and RIO will be featuring Angry Birds on their advertising paraphernalia. And yesterday they released a secret code (that didn’t turn out to be a code at all) for fans to grab themselves a brand new secret level of the game! WARNING: if you’d like to find the secret for yourself, do NOT read beyond this paragraph.
The way you are to attain the hidden RIO level is not a code at all, but a sequence of actions. First, you must unlock all the levels necessary to get you to Ham Em’ High 13-12. Once you are in this level, you’ll notice that your first two birds are a Yellow and a White. Your first step is to take the Yellow bird and waste it. Launch it anywhere you want, it just needs to get out of the way. Smash some strawberries with it. Smash them good. Next, you’ll need to be hot on the pistol for move 2. If you’ve made it this far, more than likely you are. Launch the White bird BACKWARDS and plop down its egg so it hits that little notch in the hill. If you do it correctly, you’ll receive a GOLDEN EGG! Once you receive the golden egg, you can go ahead and finish the level or quit the level, it shouldn’t matter. Leave Ham Em’ High and move to the right in your worlds menu and find the Golden Eggs you’ve collected thus far. Inside your Golden Eggs screen, move one to the right and you should see an egg in the shape of a football – click it! Tah dah! It’s the secret Angry Birds RIO level. Here you’ll see glass, stone, and wood spelling out the word RIO. When we first assessed this level when it was leaked a couple days ago, we’d decided it would be basically impossible without Black Bomb birds. Guess what you get to use in this level? Use them wisely and you shall destroy many pigs gleefully. When you’ve won this level, you’ll see this slightly different win screen with a button you might not recognize. The end of the RIO level treats you to a link to the following video which you may have already seen in one form or another: Fun stuff, huh? Fun, huh? ) |
Motorola XOOM to be $800 tips Best Buy advert; due February 24 Posted: 07 Feb 2011 01:25 AM PST Motorola’s XOOM Superbowl advert is already prompting arguments about whether the whole thing was all too iPod-esque, but we’d wager not as many arguments as leaked pricing details for the Android 3.0 Honeycomb slate. According to a Best Buy advert passed to Engadget – which suggests the XOOM will land in-store on February 24 – the 10.1-inch tablet will be all of $799.99 with a month-to-month data agreement. Four data plans are offered by Verizon, ranging from 1GB per month for $20, through 3GB and 5GB for $35 and $50 respectively, and finally 10GB for $80. According to the fine print, “To activate WiFi functionality on this device, a minimum of one month data subscription is required.” ) |
Vodafone confirms Nexus S incoming in Black and White Posted: 07 Feb 2011 01:00 AM PST Vodafone has announced that it will be the first European carrier to offer the Google Nexus S directly, joining retailer Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy UK in pushing the Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone. The Samsung-made flagship – the Android Community review of which you can read here – will go on sale in Vodafone’s own stores, though it’s unclear whether other carriers will also be offering it direct. As well as the general black Nexus S we’ve already seen, Vodafone has clinched the exclusive on the white version. No pricing or availability as yet, but we’re guessing Vodafone will be wanting to push this pair out as soon as possible. ) |
Sony Ericsson confirms XPERIA Play debut on February 13 2011 Posted: 07 Feb 2011 12:34 AM PST “Android is ready to play” reckons Sony Ericsson, and the company has finally admitted what we’ve known for a couple of months now, and officially unveiled the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play. The PlayStation phone was outed in a Superbowl advert over the weekend, and according to Sony Ericsson’s Facebook page will be officially launched just before MWC 2011 on Sunday, February 13 at 13:00 EST. That’s when we’ll have full details – including pricing and release dates – but we’ve already had confirmed that Vodafone UK intends to offer the handset. Android Community will be at MWC 2011 this year to bring back all the important Android news, so expect plenty of coverage on the XPERIA Play. [via SlashGear] ) |
Motorola XOOM Superbowl Commercial Shows Love and De-Podding Posted: 06 Feb 2011 06:23 PM PST Remember the 15 second preview for the Motorola XOOM / Android 3.0 Honeycomb commercial we showed you a couple days ago? Now we’ve got the whole thing. It’s just been shown during a break in the Superbowl, depicting what we already know, an array of Podlings walking to a train, an outsider amongst them wielding a Motorola XOOM tablet. What happens after that is where it gets weird.
One of the female Podlings is singled out, her earbuds in her ears, her eyes blank. The XOOM man has a bouquet of flowers that he takes a photo of with the tablet, and uses to create an animated video. This video he sends to the lady’s unidentified desktop computer, and the man appears at her cube, like a creeper. At this point she pulls the plugs out of her ears that looks up, and they ARE IN LOVE. The messages at the end of the video is “THE TABLET TO CREATE A BETTER WORLD” and “Motorola XOOM with Google – The world’s first Android 3.0 tablet.” Take a peek at the full at here: [Via ShareMoto] ) |
