Tegra 2 based Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 official

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 10:11 AM PST

Samsung has officially unveiled its second Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and as we suggested it’s running NVIDIA’s dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 chipset rather than one of Samsung’s own processors. The Galaxy Tab 10.1, as the name suggests, has a 10.1-inch 1280 x 768 touchscreen, just like the Motorola XOOM, along with an 8-megapixel autofocus camera capable of Full HD video recording.

OS is Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and since the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a “Google Experience” slate it uses the native Honeycomb UI, rather than Samsung’s own custom TouchWiz interface. That should mean faster OS updates in future, too.

Samsung isn’t saying exactly when the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will launch, nor pricing, but we’ve heard separately that the company hopes to beat Motorola and the XOOM to European availability; we’ve also heard whispers that Vodafone – in the UK at least – may have the slate exclusively in April 2011. Stand by for hands-on and video!

Press Release:

NVIDIA and Samsung Partner to Deliver the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Honeycomb Tablet

GALAXY Tab's Successor Powered by Tegra 2, Featuring a Dual-Core CPU plus an NVIDIA GeForce GPU That Enable Full Use of Android 3.0

Barcelona — MWC 2011 — Feb. 13, 2011—NVIDIA and Samsung Electronics announced today the Galaxy Tab 10.1, a 10.1-inch screen tablet which uses the NVIDIA® TegraTM 2 mobile super chip to take full advantage of the Android 3.0 (also known as Honeycomb) user interface.

While the previous 7-inch GALAXY Tab introduced the Android tablet space, the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet maximizes the entertainment on-the-go experience. It features the Tegra 2 chip's dual-core CPU and GeForce GPU for faster Web browsing, snappier response time and overall better performance.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 utilizes the Tegra 2 chip to power Honeycomb, the first GPU- accelerated user interface designed for tablets and other larger-screen devices.

The new Samsung tablet with Tegra 2 enables consumers to engage in multitasking, surf the web quickly with fast-loading Web pages and Flash-based content, enjoy console- quality gaming and savor HD movies.

"Our first GALAXY Tab successfully defined a new generation of Android tablets," said Hyungmoon Noh, VP of R&D Strategy Group, at Samsung. "We've worked closely with NVIDIA to raise the stakes again. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, with Honeycomb and Tegra 2, provide the optimal entertainment and multimedia experience without compromising mobility Samsung is known for."

"Samsung's latest tablet with the Tegra 2 mobile super chip and Honeycomb is a great example of what we've come to expect from one of the world's most innovative companies," said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA.

The companies are also partnering to bring a new Android-based super phone with a dual-core CPU to consumers, for never-before-seen experiences.

Sonos Controller for Android hands-on [Video]

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 07:42 AM PST

Sonos has been promising an Android controller app for a while now, and we’ve just had a chance to go hands on with the software at the pre-MWC ShowStoppers event. Headed to the Android Market in March as a free download, the app does everything we’re familiar with from the iOS version for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, but also gets some extra functionality by virtue of Google’s more flexible attitude towards hardware.

So, the volume buttons on the side of the handset – in this case a demo Nexus S – will work to control the master volume or the zone volume when you’re in the Sonos app, and there’s integration with Google’s voice search functionality too. That allows you to search for a specific artist, track or album simply by saying the name out loud (of course, you can always use the on-screen keyboard instead).

Functionally, it all works just as well as the Apple version, and navigating between two different zones – in this case Sonos S5 players – was a matter of tapping and picking a track to play. There’s nothing here that will spoil Sonos’ reputation of solid, straightforward usability. The company has promised a review copy when it comes out of final beta, so we’ll save our final opinion for then, but so far things look great.

Motorola XOOM gets huge $1,200 Best Buy listing

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 04:31 AM PST

It’s a morning of Motorola pre-orders, though we’re hoping Best Buy’s pricing for the Motorola XOOM isn’t quite finessed yet. The retailer has listed the 10-inch Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet for a whopping $1,199, considerably higher than the $799 we’ve previously seen rumored for the slate.

Now, it’s entirely possible that Best Buy has listed the XOOM temporarily at this figure, and the actual launch – which isn’t expected until later this month – will see a far more affordable price. If this is the unlocked, contract-free price, however, we can’t see Motorola having much luck.

[Thanks Magid!]

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1″ and Galaxy S II official photos leak

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 12:55 AM PST

The Samsung MWC 2011 leaks just keep coming, and after yesterday’s spec-spill of the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1″, now we have some official imagery too. Samsung Hub and MovePlayer have dug up various renders and live shots of the smartphone and tablet.

As we learned yesterday, the Galaxy S II has a 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, dual-core 1GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab 10.1″ has a 1280 x 768 display, 1GHz dual-core CPU and the same 8-megapixel camera. Both can apparently shoot Full HD video. We’ll know more – and have hands-on – after Samsung’s MWC 2011 event later today.

Rightware Steroscopic 3D Interface Demo [Image and Video]

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 02:11 PM PST

It appears that our good pals on CrunchGear have got their hands on an early set of images and video of Rightware’s brand spanking new Stereoscopic 3D interface that’ll be working hard at impressing everyone in the world via Barcelona over the next few days. This 3D interface will be working with Android, obviously, and is based on the Rightware Kanzi UI, which if you’re unaware is a platform for displaying 3D user interfaces on mobile devices, specializing in the especially complex.

CEO of Rightware Tero Sarkkinem had the following to say about this super amazing setup: “[here we have] the world's first fully functioning stereoscopic 3D home screen for Android…it's now up and running, and will be showcased by Rightware at Mobile World Congress." Sounds good to us. Can’t wait to get our fingers poking around in there to see how well it flies around and of course, if it’s really all it looks to be.
