| Galaxy S Android 2.3, iPad 2 4G LTE, Galaxy S 2 release date: US Update Posted: 25 Feb 2011 06:13 PM PST
First up, Samsung has confirmed the Galaxy S will receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread next month. At a blogger event, the manufacturer confirmed the news and it looks like the unlocked European model will get first dibs. Verizon's CEO Daniel Meade sat down with the Wall Street Journal to discuss Apple and their plans for 4G LTE. It looks like we may see a LTE-capable iPad 2 next week. HTC has unveiled their first CDMA Android world phone, the HTC Merge. Powered by Android 2.2 with the Sense UI, the Merge features a 3.8-inch display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and 5-megapixel camera. Consumer reports has weighed in with their official Verizon iPhone 4 review. Unfortunately, the Verizon model, like its brother, still suffers from the signal degradation issue — will we see another case program? Last up this morning is great news for Samsung Galaxy S 2 hopefuls. Clove, Play and Expansys have outed the device for a mid to late March release. Pricing starts at £510 plus VAT for the 16GB model, but as much as £630 for that same model at Expansys. A bit pricey if you ask me. That wraps up your tech news for the week. As always I'm Nick Marshall and I'll see you again on Monday. Related posts:

| Samsung Galaxy S 2 gets priced and dated for the UK Posted: 25 Feb 2011 06:01 PM PST
The day began with Clove's official blog outing the price and release date information. According to the post, anyone who ordered the 16GB Galaxy S 2 at a price lower than £510 will need to call in with their order reference number to agree upon the new price. Inventory is expected "slightly sooner than expected", landing as soon as mid to late March. Play has corrobrated these claims with their own updates. The retailer has listed 31 March 2011 as the day of reckoning, but priced their 16GB Galaxy S 2 at £599.99 instead. If the price is a bit too much to swallow, just head on over to Expansys who has their unlocked 16GB Galaxy S 2 priced at a jaw-dropping £630. As much as we love the next-generation Galaxy S smartphone, that's a whole lot of coin. Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a dual-core Exynos processor does sound kind of nice though, right? Related posts:

| Even Verizon can’t do it right: iPhone 4 Antennagate lives on Posted: 25 Feb 2011 05:30 PM PST
Last summer we saw unprecedented numbers of iPhone 4s fly off retail shelves worldwide. It was during that time that the saga known as Antennagate came to fruition, causing some buyers to reconsider their next smartphone purchase. In the months that followed, Apple released several videos of competing handset demonstrating the same the same signal degradation. The concept is simple, grip the phone tightly over the antenna and you lose bars. Consumer Reports didn't take the bait. Instead the applauded Apple for offering free cases and bumpers, but insisted the iPhone 4 had a design flaw. Earlier this month when the Verizon iPhone 4 went on sale, tech journalists were quick to point out a change in the aluminum band around the phone which makes up the antennas. Despite the design change, Antennagate live on. According to Consumer Reports, "the Verizon iPhone 4 has a problem that could cause the phone to drop calls, or be unable to place calls, in weak signal conditions, Consumer Reports engineers have found in lab tests". As a result, the Verizon iPhone 4 (like its close relative) is not included in its list of recommended smartphones. Quite the conundrum considering the smartphone outperformed most of the competition in nearly every category. Now for the million dollar (or ten million dollar) question — will Apple offer a case/bumper program for Verizon iPhone 4 owners? via Consumer Reports | Cnet Related posts:

| HTC Merge is official: first Android CDMA world phone by HTC Posted: 25 Feb 2011 04:57 PM PST
The HTC Merge run Android 2.2 with HTC's Sense user interface, dubbed the "Sense experience". A large 3.8-inch display covers a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for quick messaging. On the back of the handset is a 5.0-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, capable of shooting 720P HD video. Other standard features include GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately data speeds will top off with 3G connectivity so don't expect compatibility with Verizon's 4G LTE network. Although, you never know what type of twist Verizon might throw into the mix. Here's what HTC had to say about their first Android-based CDMA world phone,
No word on pricing or an exact release date just yet, spring 2011 is all we have to go by, for now. Add one more mid-range contender to the ever expanding Android portfolio. Coming Spring 2011 | TBD | HTC Related posts:

| Apple gets onboard with 4G LTE for iPad 2? Posted: 25 Feb 2011 04:28 PM PST
For every bit of speculation revolving around Apple products there is also an equal level of consistency. Each year around June, a shiny new iPhone is released. Meanwhile, MacBook Pros and iMacs see a refresh in six to twelve month intervals. Next week Apple is holding an event where the company will introduce the iPad 2. Engulfed by countless rumors, the second-generation tablet may have an exciting, albeit speculated, feature — 4G LTE. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon CEO Daniel Meade "expects Apple to offer mobile devices on the carrier's 4G technology". "You'll see more coming from Apple on LTE," he said. "They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it." Under normal circumstances this interview might have gone unnoticed, however there's a twist. There are three different iPad 2s in the SDK: K93, K94 and K95. Granted, this may refer to a WiFi-only model, GSM (3G+WiFi), and CDMA. Here's the twist: the Verizon iPhone uses a Qualcomm GOBI chipset which allows both CDMA and GSM connectivity so a dedicated CDMA model is not necessary. As the tension builds going into Apple's iPad 2 event schedule for March 2, we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that Apple will include 4G LTE support. There's at least one competitor who would hate to see that happen. via 9to5Mac Related posts:

| Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.3 Gingerbread confirmed: arrives in March Posted: 25 Feb 2011 03:56 PM PST
Separating fact from fiction is our job. Fact, Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the must-have update for Android users. Short of rooting your handset, this will be the method of choice for getting a tasty helping of Android sweets. The European Samsung Galaxy S will be the first handset to receive the special treatment. Since every US carrier released their own Galaxy S smartphone, a timely release for the states is unlikely.. Unfortunately, unlocked GSM models are the apple of Samsung (and most manufacturers') eye. However, the Samsung Galaxy S 2 is coming soon so waiting around for Gingerbread might not be necessary if that's your cup of tea. Either way it plays out, Samsung walks away the victor. Existing Galaxy S owners receive their update and those that can't wait (like ourselves) jump the gun on the latest and greatest — the Galaxy S 2. We'll be following this story closely, but if you have a line on additional Android 2.3 roll outs to Galaxy S phones, feel free to drop a comment below. We'd appreciate it. via SlashGear Related posts:

| New MacBook Pro hands on photos and FaceTime HD demo [video] Posted: 25 Feb 2011 08:52 AM PST We’ve just received our new MacBook Pro. Before we dive into the review, read on, gawp at our hands-on photos and get set for some first impressions. Oh, and feel free to suggest anything you want us to do with our new aluminium baby in the comments section. The new MacBook Pro packs a handful of extremely powerful, but pretty discreet feaures. There’s a new HD FaceTime camera, and new Sandy Bridge Intel architecture, with dual core processors for 13 inch models, and quad core as standard across the rest of the range. But the most glamorous is that Thunderbolt port on the side. At a briefing with Apple this morning, we saw prototype hard drives from Promise and LaCie. The former delivered four simultaneous streams of raw 1080p video to the new MacBook Pro without breaking a sweat. That sort of speed is unprecedented on a laptop. Prior to this you’d have needed a Mac Pro, with some raid hardware attached. Unfortunately, we don’t have a Thunderbolt device to hand, so testing its capabilities outside Apple’s Executive Briefing room is going to be tricky. LaCie? Promise? Feel free to post us something to plug in! The FaceTime HD camera, meanwhile delivers crispy clean video for video calls and iMovie recordings. To enjoy the full resolution though, you’ll need to be calling another new MacBook Pro. Call an iPhone, iPod touch, older MacBook or iMac and you’ll get standard def. Check out the quality of that FaceTime HD webcam in our quick demo video below. If you watch on YouTube you’ll be able to expand it and see it in full-screen, HD glory. Another unsung addition to the new MacBook Pro is an SDXC slot on the side capable of supporting 64GB memory cards. As long-time fans of the SD slot on our own MacBook Pro machines, it’s a welcome addition. However, like most of Apple’s new bells and whistles, we don’t think it’s worth rushing out and slapping the credit card down for. Unless you’re a professional video editor, likely to be working with all-new Thunderbolt-capable kit in the next few months, you can probably stand to skip this upgrade. It’s nice, and speedy doesn’t come close to describing the new MacBook’s performance, but for the layman, or even the most ardent Mac fanboy, it’s far from an essential update. At least, until the first must-have Thunderbolt gadgets start appearing. Related posts:
