The votes are in: large-screen smartphones on the rise

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:28 PM PDT

The votes are in: large-screen smartphones on the riseThe roller coaster of gadget trends has resulted in a growing demand for large-screen smartphones. Back in 2001 the mobile industry focused on making phones smaller and more compact. Today small screens are out and big boy screens are in. Smartphones with 4-inch or larger screens now represent 24 percent of the market. Meanwhile smartphones with screen smaller than 3.4-inches dropped 30 percent over the past year. Wondering where the iPhone's 3.5-inch display fits in?

NDP has completed their 2010 study on smartphone screen sizes. Their research shows that smartphones with 4-inch screen (or larger) like the Galaxy S, EVO 4G and Droid X now represent 24 percent of the market. The market for 3.5-inch to 3.9-inch displays, which includes all models of the iPhone, only increased 2-percent from the year before. The real damage can be felt by smartphones with screens smaller than 3.4-inch. In the fourth quarter of 2009 those devices held 63 percent of the market, but in the same quarter of 2010 their market share dropped to a mere 36 percent.

Now for the top five highest-selling large-screen smartphones of 2010: (1) HTC EVO 4G, (2) Motorola Droid X, (3) Samsung Fascinate, (4) Samsung Captivate, (5) Samsung Vibrant. It's no surprise that the Galaxy S line walked away with the most device in the top five since they offer a different version on all major US carriers. While this data is focused on the US market, we'd love to hear your thoughts on how you think the UK top five list would stack up. Did you see more large-screen smartphones over the past year compared to years past?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 confirmed: check mate

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:05 PM PDT

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 confirmed: check mateEarly tomorrow Samsung is expected to take the stage at CTIA to announce the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. Today our friends at pocketnow.com managed to find the display area for the tablet, confirming Android 3.0 Honeycomb is a go, alongside Samsung's own UX. Here's the latest on the mid-sized Galaxy Tab.

At the heart of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a dual-core 1 GHz processor which promises "PC-like performance". Dual antenna 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, an 8.9-inch display running at 1280×800 resolution, a thickness of 8.6mm and a weight of 470 grams round out the spec highlights.

The higher-than Motorola Xoom pixel density is certainly an interesting twist, but we were most interested by the UI revelations. According to pocketnow.com, Samsung's UX is "comprised of the Live Panel homescreen, complete with custom widgets, plus an interesting app switching that provided BlackBerry Playbook-like app switching with live previews of the apps that are open in the background".

We'll hear more about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 tomorrow during the press event, but for now we couldn't be more excited. Live previews of apps is the Playbook's killer feature. If Samsung can manage to execute in a similar fashion without compromising performance or battery life significantly, we might be in love.

Sony NGP to offer simultaneous digital and physical game releases

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:49 PM PDT

Sony NGP to offer simultaneous digital and physical game releasesSony's Next Generation Portable (NGP) has stirred up quite the buzz since being announced in January at a Tokyo press event. Today, the topic of discussion is focused on game launches. Following in the footsteps of the PSP Go, Sony's NGP will primarily focus on digital content, but like the original PSPs there will also be physical copies (flash cards), released simultaneously.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, physical copies (via proprietary flash cards) will not be available for every game to launch on the NGP. But, the option is nevertheless available. The advantage to developers is "a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking" — there's no risk of physical inventory occupying shelves.

With the demise of the PSP's UMD format, the NGP flash cards will range in size up to 4GB. For heavy graphic intense games, physical media will be much more convenient than downloading to your portable console. If you are using the 3G version of the NGP, physical media would be even more important.

Expect plenty more Sony NGP details to trickle out as we lead up to E3 2011 in June this year. As expected, we'll be on hand to track down the answers you're looking for — any questions?

Eee Pad Transformer hits Taiwan this week: T-minus three days

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:30 PM PDT

Eee Pad Transformer hits Taiwan this week: T-minus three daysWe witnessed the announcement, we had hands-on time and we even reviewed it. The Asus EEE Pad Transformer is scheduled to launch in Taiwan in a little over three days, beating our April estimate. Over on the company's official Facebook page, a countdown is underway leading to the Taiwan launch.

We're still under the assumption the Eee Pad Transformer will range between £250-£450 when it his the UK. Despite the countdown, Asus has kept the official pricing a mystery so we're hoping the high end of our estimate includes the laptop dock. Specs remain unchanged: 10.1-inch screen, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM and your choice of 16GB or 32GB storage.

With a better than expect release date in the midst of CTIA Wireless, will the Asus Eee Pad Transformer launch still be your top priority? Or, will the possibility of other hybrid laptop/tablets yet-to-be announced keep you on the fence? Let us know your thoughts.

Coming Soon | Asus | £250 – £450

Original iPad joins the Smart Cover party: do-it-yourself hack

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:11 PM PDT

Original iPad joins the Smart Cover party: do-it-yourself hackIf you've become jealous of your iPad 2 touting comrades, a simple do-it-yourself hack will help level the playing field. Simply apply some glue and a few rare earth magnets to the side of your original iPad and your flashy new Smart Cover awaits — ready to find out more?

Within minutes of the iPad 2 unveiling, the Smart Cover became a "must-have" accessory – heck, we even thought it should be bundled with the iPad 2 in our review. Unfortunately, the original iPad was left in the dark since it lacked a magnetic edge. The crafty minds at therussiansusedapencil.com decided they'd had enough and wanted an immediate fix.

They began testing several different types of rare earth magnets until they finally settled on using block magnets which sit flush on the edge of the iPad. After working out some positioning issues they were ready to super glue the magnets. The good news is that super gluing the magnets is fairly easy to remove with a flathead screwdrivers and a very light tap of a hammer.

For those daring enough to try the DIY hack, your original iPad will never look better.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Arc hit pre-order on Vodafone

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 10:59 AM PDT

Look what’s gone live today: pre-orders for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, AKA the PlayStation Phone, on Vodafone, plus the waif like Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc.

While no precise release dates are given for either, Sony Ericsson itself has said the former will be launching on 31 March, so we’d expect it right around then.

Best Android apps of all time: Top 100

Interestingly, although the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc might be the higher specced phone, with HDMI-out and a frankly anorexic 8.7mm profile, it’ll actually set you back slightly less, at £30 per month on a two year contract with Voda compared to £35 for the Sony Ericsson phone with game controls.

You can place dibs on the blowers at the links below, but don’t forget you’ll be able to pick them up SIM-free and on other networks also. Will you though? Shout up with your view in the comments below.

Best iPhone apps: app of the day = Nursery Rhymes with StoryTime

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:31 AM PDT

Our best iPhone apps column doesn’t usually feature children’s apps. In fact, this may well be the very first time we’ve featured a full-on kid’s app but Nursery Rhymes with StoryTime justifies that. At first glimpse, Nursery Rhymes appears to be a fully animated story book with a selection of classic fairy stories built-in (The Owl And The Pussycat, Jack And Jill etc) but it has a killer feature, the StoryTime bit…

Check Out Our Most Recommended

StoryTime allows you to hook up Nursery Rhymes with another copy of the app on an iPhone or iPad anywhere in the world via Game Center and read the stories to the child at the other end remotely.

Sure an app is not as good as proper story time but if you’re away from your family, it could be a real boon. The brilliantly interactive animations make the experience even better. Even the big kids at EP HQ loved this one. You can check it out in a preview video below:

Best smartphone deals of the week: BlackBerry Torch, Samsung Galaxy S, iPhone 3GS and more!

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:15 AM PDT

Hankering for a new handset? Pining for a new phone? Before we run out of alliterative pairings, simply click on through for our weekly roundup of the best smartphone deals. We’ve got something for everyone, whichever OS tickles your telephone fancy. Sorry…

1. Samsung Omnia 7
3 Mobile | 2000 mins, 5000 texts, unlimited data, free handset, 24 months | £35.00 per month

Samsung’s opening Windows Phone 7 salvo is a belter of a blower, with a glorious Super AMOLED (AMOLED stands for fancy, in layman’s speak) and Microsoft’s spiffy, headache free operating system. Network Three really delivers on its unlimited data promise too, so you can stream all the videos you like on the go.

See all Samsung Omnia 7 deals

2. BlackBerry Torch 9800
O2 | 500 mins, unlimited texts, 500MB internet, free handset, 24 months | £25.53 per month
If the BlackBerry Torch was a small, spoiled child, it’d be one that has its cake and eats it, every day. That QWERTY keyboard is best in class, but it’s not coupled to a teeny, tiny screen either, but a big ol’ touch panel. With RIM’s impressive servers doing all the leg work, you won’t even come close to using up all your data on this bargain deal.

3. HTC Wildfire
Virgin Mobile | 100 mins, 500 texts, 500MB Internet, free handset, 18 months | £20.43 per month
Two year contracts may give peace of mind, but if you like to switch phones like some sort of mobile floozy, an 18 month tie in might be the better bet: you certainly can’t say no to the delightful HTC Wildfire Android phone at that price either.

4. Samsung Galaxy S
T-Mobile | 600 mins, 500 texts, 500MB internet, free flexible booster, free handset, 24 months | £30.64 per month
Move along folks, nothing to see here. Only last year’s best Android phone as voted by Electricpig’s experts, with an amazing display and the sort of media support other mobiles can only dream of. Oh, you are interested? Take a walk T-Mobile’s way then for this offer.

5. Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB
3 Mobile | 2000 mins, 5000 texts, unlimited data, free handset, 24 months | £35.00 per month!
The iPhone 3GS (The S is for speed) is still a sensational smartphone, but now it’s sensationally priced too. Three is serving it up with a ludicrous amount of minutes and texts – and of course unlimited data – and frankly, if you manage to go over on these, we’ll be both impressed and a bit concerned. One all you can eat buffet of a tariff.

Heir to the phone: Would one buy the Royal Wedding handset?

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:02 AM PDT

Alcatel’s been involved in some rather crude celebrity tie ins of late (The Professor Green phone, anyone?) but this new “celebratory” edition Alcatel One Touch commemorating the royal wedding next is bit too far, one thinks.

It’s the same old One Touch blower, complete with “dazzling” 1.5-inch colour screen, FM radio and alarm clock and calculator functionality. It just so happens to be adorned with a terrible Union jack cover, and comes pre-loaded with a ringtone of Mendelssohn’s famous Wedding March.

The question is, do you want to celebrate the marriage of two people you’ve likely never met by owning a phone with their initials on, for years? This seems like the sort of gift better suited to a tacky ceremony out of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. It’s a good thing it only costs £14.95 on Pay As You Go (Via Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy), or it’d be off with one’s head, for sure.
