| Do it yourself Smart Cover, NGP game release details, Galaxy Tab 8.9: US Update Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:41 PM PDT
Don't be jealous of your iPad 2 touting friends. Simply follow this do-it-yourself guide and you'll be adding a Smart Cover to your original iPad in no time! The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is scheduled to touchdown in Taiwan in just three days. After initial estimates pegged an April launch we couldn't be more excited for this week's launch. The Sony NGP will offer simultaneous digital and physical game releases. Using proprietary flash cards (up to 4GB capacity), Sony will some games on physical media in conjunction with their digital release. For developers who want to take creative risks, the digital-only method could prove most efficient. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 markers are up at CTIA Wireless. Details on Samsung's custom UX have been revealed and we think you might want to take a second look at the mid-sized Tab. Last on this morning's agenda is new NDP research which shows large-screen smartphones are growing in popularity. Smartphones with 3.4-inch or smaller displays are on the way out, big is in — here's the scoop. That wraps up your morning dose of tech news. As always I'm Nick Marshall and I'll see you again tomorrow. Related posts:

| The votes are in: large-screen smartphones on the rise Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:28 PM PDT
NDP has completed their 2010 study on smartphone screen sizes. Their research shows that smartphones with 4-inch screen (or larger) like the Galaxy S, EVO 4G and Droid X now represent 24 percent of the market. The market for 3.5-inch to 3.9-inch displays, which includes all models of the iPhone, only increased 2-percent from the year before. The real damage can be felt by smartphones with screens smaller than 3.4-inch. In the fourth quarter of 2009 those devices held 63 percent of the market, but in the same quarter of 2010 their market share dropped to a mere 36 percent. Now for the top five highest-selling large-screen smartphones of 2010: (1) HTC EVO 4G, (2) Motorola Droid X, (3) Samsung Fascinate, (4) Samsung Captivate, (5) Samsung Vibrant. It's no surprise that the Galaxy S line walked away with the most device in the top five since they offer a different version on all major US carriers. While this data is focused on the US market, we'd love to hear your thoughts on how you think the UK top five list would stack up. | Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 confirmed: check mate Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:05 PM PDT
At the heart of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a dual-core 1 GHz processor which promises "PC-like performance". Dual antenna 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, an 8.9-inch display running at 1280×800 resolution, a thickness of 8.6mm and a weight of 470 grams round out the spec highlights. The higher-than Motorola Xoom pixel density is certainly an interesting twist, but we were most interested by the UI revelations. According to pocketnow.com, Samsung's UX is "comprised of the Live Panel homescreen, complete with custom widgets, plus an interesting app switching that provided BlackBerry Playbook-like app switching with live previews of the apps that are open in the background". We'll hear more about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 tomorrow during the press event, but for now we couldn't be more excited. Live previews of apps is the Playbook's killer feature. If Samsung can manage to execute in a similar fashion without compromising performance or battery life significantly, we might be in love. [via Pocketnow] Related posts:

| Sony NGP to offer simultaneous digital and physical game releases Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:49 PM PDT
Before we get ahead of ourselves, physical copies (via proprietary flash cards) will not be available for every game to launch on the NGP. But, the option is nevertheless available. The advantage to developers is "a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking" — there's no risk of physical inventory occupying shelves. With the demise of the PSP's UMD format, the NGP flash cards will range in size up to 4GB. For heavy graphic intense games, physical media will be much more convenient than downloading to your portable console. If you are using the 3G version of the NGP, physical media would be even more important. Expect plenty more Sony NGP details to trickle out as we lead up to E3 2011 in June this year. As expected, we'll be on hand to track down the answers you're looking for — any questions? Coming Soon | Sony | TBD Related posts:

| Eee Pad Transformer hits Taiwan this week: T-minus three days Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:30 PM PDT
We're still under the assumption the Eee Pad Transformer will range between £250-£450 when it his the UK. Despite the countdown, Asus has kept the official pricing a mystery so we're hoping the high end of our estimate includes the laptop dock. Specs remain unchanged: 10.1-inch screen, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM and your choice of 16GB or 32GB storage. With a better than expect release date in the midst of CTIA Wireless, will the Asus Eee Pad Transformer launch still be your top priority? Or, will the possibility of other hybrid laptop/tablets yet-to-be announced keep you on the fence? Let us know your thoughts. Coming Soon | Asus | £250 – £450 Related posts:

| Original iPad joins the Smart Cover party: do-it-yourself hack Posted: 21 Mar 2011 04:11 PM PDT
Within minutes of the iPad 2 unveiling, the Smart Cover became a "must-have" accessory – heck, we even thought it should be bundled with the iPad 2 in our review. Unfortunately, the original iPad was left in the dark since it lacked a magnetic edge. The crafty minds at therussiansusedapencil.com decided they'd had enough and wanted an immediate fix. They began testing several different types of rare earth magnets until they finally settled on using block magnets which sit flush on the edge of the iPad. After working out some positioning issues they were ready to super glue the magnets. The good news is that super gluing the magnets is fairly easy to remove with a flathead screwdrivers and a very light tap of a hammer. For those daring enough to try the DIY hack, your original iPad will never look better. Out Now | Apple | $39.00 and up Related posts:

| Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Arc hit pre-order on Vodafone Posted: 21 Mar 2011 10:59 AM PDT
While no precise release dates are given for either, Sony Ericsson itself has said the former will be launching on 31 March, so we’d expect it right around then. Best Android apps of all time: Top 100 Interestingly, although the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc might be the higher specced phone, with HDMI-out and a frankly anorexic 8.7mm profile, it’ll actually set you back slightly less, at £30 per month on a two year contract with Voda compared to £35 for the Sony Ericsson phone with game controls. You can place dibs on the blowers at the links below, but don’t forget you’ll be able to pick them up SIM-free and on other networks also. Will you though? Shout up with your view in the comments below. Out TBC | £varies | Vodafone (Xperia Play and Xperia Arc) Related posts:

| Best iPhone apps: app of the day = Nursery Rhymes with StoryTime Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:31 AM PDT
StoryTime allows you to hook up Nursery Rhymes with another copy of the app on an iPhone or iPad anywhere in the world via Game Center and read the stories to the child at the other end remotely. Sure an app is not as good as proper story time but if you’re away from your family, it could be a real boon. The brilliantly interactive animations make the experience even better. Even the big kids at EP HQ loved this one. You can check it out in a preview video below: Out now | £2.39 | iTunes Related posts:

| Heir to the phone: Would one buy the Royal Wedding handset? Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:02 AM PDT Alcatel’s been involved in some rather crude celebrity tie ins of late (The Professor Green phone, anyone?) but this new “celebratory” edition Alcatel One Touch commemorating the royal wedding next is bit too far, one thinks.
It’s the same old One Touch blower, complete with “dazzling” 1.5-inch colour screen, FM radio and alarm clock and calculator functionality. It just so happens to be adorned with a terrible Union jack cover, and comes pre-loaded with a ringtone of Mendelssohn’s famous Wedding March. The question is, do you want to celebrate the marriage of two people you’ve likely never met by owning a phone with their initials on, for years? This seems like the sort of gift better suited to a tacky ceremony out of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. It’s a good thing it only costs £14.95 on Pay As You Go (Via Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy), or it’d be off with one’s head, for sure. Related posts:
