Time is Squishy

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:32 AM PST

Someone said that even a broken watch shows the correct time twice a day. With that “glass half full” mentality in mind, check out the Vague Clock. It’s not broken or anything. In fact it runs with GPS precision and can never be wrong. What's unique is the dial and supporting intention. It's meant to signify that time, although precious, is often the cause of stress. The pressure to keep up with our deadlines is abstracted and replaced with a playful distraction. To be able to read the time, you have to touch its squishy surface.

Vague Clock is a 2010 Red Dot Concept Design Winning Entry.

Blind CC Gets Refined

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:26 AM PST

Braille Credit Card is a refined version of the Blind CC, but from a different designer. The card is much sleeker and easier to carry and is akin to regular credit cards we use. It displays the transaction in braille and reconfirms it with audio feedback. Innovation comes in the form of calculation tips and conversion facilities. It's a practical solution for the visually impaired who loves plastic money as much as I do!

Congrats on Your New Embryos

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:24 AM PST

Based on a set of life-sized statues that were shown at the Coarse solo exhibition in Chicago in 2010, Coarse now introduces their latest “oop” series. This first vinyl toy release in 8 months is a milestone — the start of the very first 7 inch series by coarse. This version goes back to the beginning of life, showcasing signature coarse characters in embryo form, a chance to experience them at their purest. OMG this is creepy cool!

This release takes place at the dawn of their existence. Each one evolves from spore to shoot and from to fruit to flesh. Once emerged from their protective pods, they are ready to begin their lives. Start collecting to form your own oop garden, watch as they grow to become noops, and eventually begin to fade. If looked after lovingly, they promise to yield a happy harvest.

This line incorporates the softer side to the sometimes shadowy coarse world. It includes oop and aw! as a freshly delivered box-set. The two curly embryos come in two editions. The hkg brood is presented in innocent-white/blush, and the signature brood in white/sunnyside-yellow. The radiant twins come housed in cuddly sponge in a solid oop container, with an air-vent and carry handle, ready to take home and be raised.

iPad 2 Window

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 07:22 AM PST

I was once referred as “loopy” by a group of designers because I wanted a house with giant displays in lieu of actual windows. The displays could provide a real view of the outside world or provide any kind of scenery I wanted. Fast forward 8 years later and someone else is thinking the same using the iPad 2. Doable yes? But will anyone do it? Doubt it. I still think it’s a cool idea though.

A Chair With a Twist

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 12:02 AM PST

This felt chair puts a new twist on sustainable ecodesign. The FF1 by designers James van Vossel and Tom de Vrieze at Fox and Freeze is comprised of only two components: one solid synthetic felt sheet and flax rope. The felt is coiled and recoiled to form the base, seat, and back while the flax rope holds the form and provides a nice finishing touch.  Aside from drilling holes there is no loss of material and the structure is completely self supporting. Total potential for DIY. Felt follows function in this symmetric yet asymmetric design.

Pulse

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PST

The beginning stages of wearing a hearing aid can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Pulse is an auditory system aimed at improving this transition by providing interactive activities such as memory games and recording challenges that the entire family can engage in. Pulse uses audio induction loop technology with colorful aid receivers and conical transmitters. Replica aids for non hearing aid wearers offer audible as well as visual positive reinforcement for children who not only hear but see the benefit of wearing the hearing aid.

Moon Table Isn’t Just for Looks

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 12:01 AM PST

The dining table is the hub of family life. The Moon table, inspired by Moon Type (an alternative to braille), was designed to encourage those who are blind or partially sighted to develop workable systems at the dinner table. Aluminum inlays map the essential paths, intersections, and spheres of use at a dining table. The integration of color and material contrast, edge tracking for navigation, and aluminum feet provide feedback when approached with a cane, make Moon 100% compliant with standard way-finding methods.

Designers: Jackson McConnell, Alex Stewart, and Monika Wensel, in collaboration with Carey Wright (occupational therapy)
