Posted: 01 Apr 2011 12:01 AM PDT

We’ve written countless stories about 3D TV but Korean researchers have unveiled the world’s first 4D television which adds in sensory effects to the standard viewing experience. The 4D TV has an in-built sensory panel that ouputs vapour during key scenes to add atmosphere to rainy moment, a vibrating motor for action scenes like Star Trek battles and a fan to replicate wind and release odours appropriate to your chosen programme.

The technology is due to be included in several major manufacturers new TV lines. If 4D TV takes off, sitting down with a sandwich to watch Grimefighters will never be the same again. Read on for more…

Avril Foyles of analysts, Unthink Research, says she believes 4D TV will be an even bigger selling point than 3D for the next generation of televisions: “3D is very immersive but 4DTV takes it to the next level. Imagine watching the Perfect Storm and really feeling the spray on your face or Toy Story 3 and being able to smell the strawberry scent on Lotso. I think it’s a game changer.”

Exact release dates and pricing for the first 4D TV sets is not available yet but the researchers predict the new sensory panel tech will be affordable to implement and have promised special Sense set-top boxes for older HD TVs. Hit the comments to let us know: would you buy a 4D TV?

Windows Phone 7 app data: Microsoft spills the beans!

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:29 PM PDT

Windows Phone 7 app data: Microsoft spills the beans! Determining whether Windows Phone 7 has lived up to expectations is very difficult when data is hard to come by. Today, Microsoft has revealed a tremendous amount of insight over on the Windows Phone Developer Blog, confirming the number of apps (11,500) and just about every other statistic we could have hoped to track down. Let's dive right in.

The Windows Phone Developers Tools have been downloaded 1.5 million times. Out of these 1.5 million downloads, 36,000 users have become members of the AppHub community to become official Windows Phone developers. The result of a 36,000 developer base is a library of 11,500 apps (not including variations of apps offered in different languages).

Looking into more detail on these 11,500 apps, Microsoft confirmed that 7,500 of these apps are paid. Another 1,100 apps are currently generating a revenue using the Microsoft Advertising Ad Control. With the majority of apps making money on Windows Phone 7, nearly 1,200 newly registered developers are being added every week. The average time for app certification is now 1.8 days.

So what about the actual phones? On average, Windows Phone 7 users download 12 apps per month. Not bad for an app library that has only been around for four months, right? There's plenty of other useful statistics provided in the Microsoft write up today, but these were the numbers that really stood out. I'd have to say things are looking on the up and up for Windows Phone developers these days, don't you agree?

Get your Dell Streak 7 this April for £299

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:15 PM PDT

Get your Dell Streak 7 this April for £299Dell's seven inch tablet, the Dell Streak 7, will hit the UK by the end of April. According to the press release, the Streak 7 will be sold directly on Dell's UK website for £299, including VAT and shipping. Powered by Android 2.2 and the custom Stage UI software UI overlay, this might be the Tegra 2-powered tablet you've been waiting for.

Let's recap the Dell Streak 7. There's a Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor under the hood, WiFi, 3G, and a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution touchscreen display. The two biggest hurdles in its way will be Android 2.2 and the screen resolution. Since Android software updates are hard to come by these days, the combination of Android 2.2 and the Stage UI could prove challenging.

On the plus side, the price is right. The £299 price tag is certainly easier to swallow than the iPad 2 at £429. If you're in the market for an ultra-portable tablet that offers dual-core processing power, keep your eyes peeled to Dell's UK website — they've promised to have this bad boy shipping by month's end.

Apple lands a new iPad 2 LCD supplier: AU Optronics Corp?

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 07:03 PM PDT

Apple lands a new iPad 2 LCD supplier: AU Optronics Corp?A rumored contract to supply Apple with new LCD displays for the iPad 2 was all it took for the stock market to rally today. Taiwain's AU Optronics Corp shares jumped as much as six percent on Thursday after the news broke. As the number four LCD maker worldwide, AU could ship as many as 30 million screens this year if the contract is in fact true.

Let's be clear, the news that AU will begin supplying Apple with new LCD screens for the iPad 2 has not been confirmed. In fact, there are several glaring issues with the news. First, AU currently uses MVA technology for its panels, not IPS technology. Since AU would need IPS technology to build the displays they'll need authorization from its patent holders: Hitachi, Sharp and LG.

The process of of applying for patent authorization does not happen overnight. According to an analyst from a foreign brokerage, "it takes at least six months to one year to apply for the patent authorization, and it also takes time to convert a fab to use the new technology". The bottom line is this piece of information would make it nearly impossible for AU to produce for the iPad 2 this year.

So did AU really land a contract to supply Apple with the iPad 2 displays or was this all a hoax to boost profits? Odds favor the latter, but if there's one thing we know about technology it's that anything can happen.

Google to follow Windows Phone lead: hardware standards incoming?

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:49 PM PDT

Google to follow Windows Phone lead: hardware standards incoming?I can honestly say I never thought I'd see the day when Google would follow Microsoft's lead. According to reports in DigiTimes and Business Week, Google may be planning to standardize Android hardware, effectively pulling back the reigns from smartphone manufacturers. Could this be the first step in ending fragmentation?

For all their faults, Microsoft has certainly done many things right with Windows Phone 7. Sure, the release of their software update has not gone as smooth as we had hoped, but their strategy was sound — release software updates worldwide, across all handsets. In order to achieve this level of synergy, Microsoft focused on hardware standardization.

For Android it seems that each week a new manufacturer enters the scene, hoping to offer their own heavily customized handset — either with a custom UI or unique feature set. While variety certainly favors some users, its impact to software updates has proven problematic. A quick look at the current Android OS distribution list illustrates this point.

According to Bloomberg, Google believes that smartphone manufacturers are taking too many liberties in their Android customizations. As a result, Google has been notifying manufacturers that they'll need to submit their custom tweaks for Google approval in advance of deployment. Failure to do so will result in denied access to early Android releases.

For now, treat this news as here-say, but we wouldn't be surprised if Google actually follows through with the plan. Anyone else out there hoping we see some hardware standardization and worldwide OS updates like or friends on iOS and Windows Phone 7?

Acer Iconia 6102 laptop pre-sale begins: proves two screens are better than one

Acer Iconia 6102 laptop pre-sale begins: proves two screens are better than oneInspired by the Nintendo DS and possibly even the Kyocera Echo headed to Sprint, the new Acer Iconia 6120 is a sexy dual-screen "Touchbook" headed to North America. The Iconia 6120 packs two 14-inch LED backlit touchscreen displays protected by Gorilla Glass and a speed Intel's Core i5 processor under the hood.

The Acer Iconia 6120 runs Windows 7 and features the Acer Ring Control Interface for simple and intuitive touch controls. Relying on a touch-screen only laptop might sound tricky, but the Acer Ring Control Interface appears each time you press five fingers in a circular pattern on the bottom of the display. You'll be presented with a quick-access menu, making it a easy to navigate between programs and settings.

Besides the Core i5 processor, there's also 4GB of memory, Intel HD graphics and a 600GB hard drive onboard. Other highlights include a 1.3 megapixel HD webcam, HDMI output, USB 3.0 and Dolby Advanced Audio v3. Another feature being highlighted by Acer is their new clear-fi digital media sharing solution.

We love touchscreens and based on smartphone sales date, so do you. When it comes to a laptop, or a "Touchbook" as Acer is calling it, we're not exactly sure where we stand. From a design standpoint, using two 14-inch displays looks rather sexy. In a practical application there's no telling how well we'd be able to hammer away an important email or document without the tactile feedback of a hardware keyboard.

Best iPhone apps: app of the day = 8 Bit Pocket Camera

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:14 AM PDT

The makers of today’s best iPhone apps entry, 8-bit Pocket Camera, hint pretty heavily at what they set out to do (“…take photos just like a certain retro video game camera from 1998!”) but we’ll come right out and say it: this app is basically a Gameboy camera stuffed into your iPhone…

Check Out Our Most Recommended

That’s an odd if you think about it after we all spent so long banging on about how the iPhone needed a better camera. That “better camera” arrived with the iPhone 4 and now we’re buying apps to make it worse.

So what makes 8-Bit Pocket Camera worthy of 8-bit Pocket Camera worthy of inclusion in our best iPhone apps library if it takes such shoddy photos? Because it’s so damn fun and includes all the features you’ll remember from that “retro video game camera” they tip their hat to with blocky photos and janky effects all wrapped up in a nicely detailed grayscale package. For £0.59 it’s well worth checking out.

HTC Pyramid launching 12 April?

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:04 AM PDT

Well looky looky looky. Just hours after we spotted an HTC Pyramid in the wild, an invite from HTC drops into our inbox, asking us to come "see what's next" on 12 April. Now what could it possibly be…

The invite's giving nothing away of course, with its shimmering liquid metal it could be a model of the T-1000 from Terminator 2. But more likely we reckon it's the HTC Pyramid first leaked back in early February. The HTC Pyramid is rumoured to be the company's first dual core handset, packing a 4.3-inch screen and 1080p video recording.

Though we wouldn't write it off being the European launch of the HTC Evo 3D, too. When HTC decides to hold a launch, it generally goes all out with two or three handsets. The Evo 3D was announced in the US last week, and features a Nintendo 3DS-esque glasses-free 3D screen.

So, a faster handset and a possible 3D mobile touching down before the first half of the year is out. Rest assured we'll be there front row centre on the 12th.
