Explore Your CKIE

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:24 AM PDT

I asked Henrik Otto, SVP Global Design of Electrolux, his thoughts on CKIE. “CKIE represents an exciting opportunity for designers and consumers alike. As the consumer, the chance to participate in a unique project and help realize the production of a design heightens the value and satisfaction that comes from ownership of that particular piece. As a designer, to see the fruits of your work rewarded by the faith of others and especially through to production is incredibly rewarding.”

I must say, he has captured the essence of CKIE and articulated it well. I resonate with the sentiment that we take greater pride in owning something that is exclusive and has some meaning or worth behind it. Almost like a story…how many of us can say that we own a cup or a watch that was designer’s perfect dream! Not many; so maybe its time to explore our CKIE.

This weekend lets relive the three projects that bedazzle us with their clever techie appeal. Fine examples of how undiluted creativity makes a positive impact on consumer choice.

When a Knife and Fork Get Together…

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:22 AM PDT

I spent several minutes staring at the Twin One knife and fork companion set. It’s a nice modern design by Adrian and Jeremy Wright (omg are you guys brothers?). Minimal, appears well balanced and definitely made for durability thanks to the nylon and over moulded rubber but the “awesomist” feature is the two can connect to form a sort of spring-loaded chopstick. I WANT ONE just to try it out. How about it guys? Oh, question… what’s up with the missing spoon?

iPhone Case is a Polaroid Printer

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:15 AM PDT

The Sophie is another concept from the venerable Mac Funamizu. The iPhone dock/case prints photos just like a Polaroid. A QR code and geo tagged map can also be printed to link it to a digital version somewhere on the web like Flickr. Clever and simple. This is a much better evolution of Polaroid technology. A certain company should take notice.

A Different Kinda Fold

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:11 AM PDT

The Feno is a folding notebook. Typically we expect a hinge between the display and keyboard, but the Feno has an additional hinge within the display! This not only makes the size more compact but also explores future use of flexible OLED screens. The pièce de résistance is the pop-out mouse! Just pop it out and you are good to go! Brilliant!

Twisted Illusion

Posted: 02 May 2011 12:03 AM PDT

Even though it’s back has been severed and three of it’s legs have been slashed, this design is still standing pretty. It’s called the Cut Chair, and it’s is the latest victim of designer Peter Bristol’s wonderfully twisted imagination. A reinforced beam anchored to a plate beneath the rug stabilizes the cantilevered seat while three cleverly placed dismembered legs give the illusion that the chair has just been magically sliced apart. A story-inspiring and striking design.

The Ecotoy

Posted: 02 May 2011 12:02 AM PDT

The AEMU Ecotoy reimagines the portable gaming system as an eco-friendly, educational, and psychologically developmental tool that encourages the child to rely on renewable energy to power the unit. The AEMU can accumulate electricity through it’s included solar panels, a wind turbine driven generator, or even by simply rolling it down the sidewalk. The gaming interface utilizes evolving personalized profiles suited to the individual child to promote not only fun electronic gaming, but an environmentally educational experience.

Origami Shade

Posted: 02 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT

The Miura Ori screen is a lightweight, sturdy, and systematically textured window covering that utilizes the genius rigid origami Miura folding process to achieve it’s functional & elegant form. A Miura fold can be packed into an area no larger than one of the segments that make up the overall shape & it’s thickness is only restricted by the thickness of the folded material thereby reducing it’s overall weight & complexity. The user can “scrunch,” if you will, a desired section for an attractive pulled-back style or collapse the shade to make it all but disappear.
