Perfect Geometric Ice Cubes

Posted: 04 May 2011 08:34 AM PDT

The Lékué ice cube tray creates perfect cubes of ice every time. Inspired by an industrial moulding technique, the cubes are formed at an angle to avoid the need to taper any of the faces. And here I thought ice cube trays couldn’t really evolve to improve any further. These remind me of the cubes used in TRON Legacy. Ice is so beautiful when cut to strict proportionate geometry.

Materials: Polypropylene

Dance to Your Heart Beat

Posted: 04 May 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Heartbeatz is a revolution in wearable visual dance tech. Utilizing infrared reflection technology the device detects the heartbeat of its user and mimics the very movement of the blood in your veins with light via a length of Electro Luminescent wire. When listening to a song with a strong, constant bass rhythm the HeartBeatz will tune and begin to beat in time with it. The conception of Heartbeatz will allow any onlookers to be able to observe this process. When applied to a large crowd amazing patterns of light can appear throughout a club or event.

However, the applications do not end there – Heartbeatz can be utilised in any other situation where a person's heart rate might want to be observed but in a less formal way, for example keep fit classes, or children playing in the dark.

Laced with LED

Posted: 04 May 2011 08:28 AM PDT

Tiny little LEDs dotting the inner realm of a lampshade, you can only imagine the mesmerizing effect it's going to create. The LED Shade Lamp is just this; no bulbs, no holder, but a handful of twinky lights doing their thing. I love the way Peter describes it, "the shade itself becomes the source of light."

The Cleaning Dog Squad

Posted: 04 May 2011 08:28 AM PDT

Before you call PETA, just hear me out. The dogs and pups involved are robotic and no animals were harmed in the making of this concept! Puppy Robotic is a vacuum cleaner consisting of a mommy dog and her litter. The mom acts as the base unit and the four pups are her cleanup crew. True to canine nature, the puppies run amok in a cleaning frenzy and at times chase remote controls or play some music.

The mommy dog nourishes the litter with electric juice and collects garbage from their units. A cool way to make them run in circles and clean their footprints is to hand the remote to their tails. Now that would be a fun site!

The Acoustic Alarm

Posted: 04 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT

If you’re not a morning person and hate the irritating cacophony of most alarm clocks then you’ll appreciate this design by Jamie McMahon. Handcrafted from 2mm thick birch plywood, walnut, and stainless steel, the Acoustic Alarm combines aesthetic rawness and simple string-pluckin’ functionality to gently awaken the user from slumber. The alarm uses a rotational pick to pluck guitar strings and has been designed to allow the user to customize the tone of the alarm to their liking with a simple adjustment of the tuning pegs.

Serpentine Stool

Posted: 04 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT

This curvaceous design known as The BCN stool is a collaboration between emerging design team Harry&Camila and established Italian design house Kristalia. The ultra contemporary ergonomic seat, molded from specially designed plastic meant to withstand wear, tear, solvents and heat, is met with natural wooden legs and supporting braces. A nice contrast of modern and traditional that is as sturdy as it is handsome and comfortable.

What a Stud

Posted: 04 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT

The appropriately named Stud table is simply handsome. Designed for Odesi by Dutch designer Marc Th. van der Voom, Stud is a sharp design sure to fit naturally in both classic and contemporary settings. It’s robust angular legs take inspiration from the classic form of the telescopic tripod, giving it an unusual yet comfortably open stance. Get it here.
