Posted: 06 May 2011 07:52 AM PDT In today’s mass produced and mass consumer market, it’s harder to find unique items. Design is/has become “common” and the really original pieces are priced far beyond what the average person can afford. Product design should be a vehicle for great utility and art accessible by everyone. Projects on CKIE like traditional ceramic making with a modern twist and upcycling a discarded sofa to an exceptional ping-pong paddle case are unique, rare and remarkable. We need to support these kinds of designs. The Slurp Mug uses traditional Greek methodology of ceramic making to create ladle-shaped mugs. The Holey Jolly brings out a unique blend of contemporary design and personal experiences. Finally we have The Kelli Mink; a project that finds very good use for an old discarded sofa by transforming the useful leather into a stylish ping-pong paddle case. Posted: 06 May 2011 07:45 AM PDT A close cousin of the Mechanical Mobile, the revOlve cellphone loves to spin. A notch up as far as physical design goes, the main differentiating factor are the detachable components that can be upgraded and recycled when necessary. I love the sleek holster and the way you can buckle the phone to your waist loop. Let's spin and wait for the magical mechanics to take over! Beautiful Vinyl Figures, noop and nism Posted: 06 May 2011 07:43 AM PDT Executing another exhibition style piece in vinyl, Coarse brings their latest figure series, “Casting Shadows” to light. It includes an original sculpture of Coarse character, noop, huddled and his new shellbound pet, nism. noop clings to a fabric kite reminiscent of a long time friend, paw!, which soars above casting his shadow onto the two characters. We’re not much for vinyl figures here but this is really beautiful. We just had to share it with you guys. Hit the jump for the full story.
Slide open the heavy hand crafted cardboard box by pulling at the woven ‘noop’ and ‘nism’ tags. Uncover the box contents — two vinyl figures, the longing nism [4''] and huddled noop [7'']. Set up the fabric paw! kite, and let the noop hold the string tight in his hand. The paw! kite will float high in the sky [14''], casting his shadow onto the two torn friends. A set of c-o-a-r-s-e typographic leaves complete this scenery, full of desperation. casting shadows HK$ 2488 Price includes global airmail shipping Designer: Coarse ---------- |
Posted: 06 May 2011 07:30 AM PDT The Siara is an amazing concept that lets you broadcast your own radio station. Stream your private station using 3rd parties services like SONOS or with the Siara box. The possibilities are really endless since it all works wirelessly. Hit the jump to see a video about one scenario. Kudos to designer Navid Gornall. Designer: Navid Gornall SIARA from Navid Gornall on Vimeo. ---------- |
Unusual Inspiration for a Yacht Posted: 06 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT Designer Alex McDiarmid’s challenge in creating this 150 foot yacht concept was to combine unusual inspirations with seaworthy practicality to produce a megayacht that exhibits adventurous styling and still maintains sportiness and agility. While guests enjoy an open plan interior, fully integrated entertainment, and accomodations for twelve visitors and eight crew members, the exterior is the truly the highlight of this luxury yacht. Influenced by non-nautical elements such as origami, it is the Sydney Opera House that is most apparent in it’s modern expressionist design. Designer: Alex McDiarmid ---------- |
Posted: 06 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT This brilliantly colored table by designer Carlos Pendas is a whimsical kid’s desk that uses tensed fabric as a surface rather than an ordinary hard top. The stretched fabric also doubles as a drum for an added touch of fun and interaction. Hangoo’s simple assembly can be completed in minutes and is so easy that even kids can participate in the process. Using stretched fabric reduces the overall weight, and a minimal amount of components means this design is cost efficient in both material and shipment. Designer: Carlos Pendas ---------- |
Posted: 06 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT Linda Allen, interior designer turned lighting designer, noticed a hole in the market for portable, cordless lamps, and decided to take things into her own hands. Her first line of lamps, the Live Anywhere collection, features a series of attractive lamps that are not only portable and cordless, but also rechargeable, multi-setting, and weather resistant. To perfect the enduring design, Allen created a customized battery system and special long-lasting light bulb for the collection. The lamps, named Ava, Corra, Persia, Seraphina, & Eleanora are a great outdoor lighting addition with a feminine touch. Designer: Linda Allen ---------- |
