Posted: 20 May 2011 08:54 AM PDT There’s a huge movement of ultra minimal chairs made of wood, metal, plastic and glass. Yes they’re gorgeous to look at but some would say, not as inviting to sit in. The Jamirang (loosely translated to “sleep” in Korean) is one comfortable looking chair. It maintains the unobtrusive lines I like, yet beckons to be sat on. Plump, is it alright to refer to a chair as plump? Material:Fabric(wool), Wood ---------- |
Posted: 20 May 2011 08:49 AM PDT Red Dot President in Asia, Ken Koo, has quite the right insight on CKIE. “Most designers are not good marketing people. In fact, most people are not good marketing people! It requires a really “thick skin” to be a good marketer, especially when you have to praise and sell your own design. This is why even good ideas often fail to take off commercially. CKIE is a wonderful addition to the design community as it provides an effective marketing platform to help designers sell. CKIE makes all designers seem like they can be a super salesman!” It's easy to become the Jack-of-all-trades, but when you are passionately focused on just being the master of your design, it becomes imperative to lean onto someone else who will fill in the gaps for you. Marketing may not be a designer's forte, so we leave them to do what they're best at, while CKIE does what it takes to get them noticed. Rocky Clock by Sebastian Oeyen of Arista Design ---------- |
Posted: 20 May 2011 08:48 AM PDT There’s this perception that the silver generation gets intimidated by technology and can find it difficult to get savvy with gadgets. Four of my family members…all above 65 years and only one of them is comfortable with computers. So maybe the perception is true, and this is why designers like Ryan Klinger are spending hours on designing a laptop especially for them. Personal Computing for Older Adults can be a solution, and it has my support! Designer: Ryan Klinger ---------- |
Posted: 20 May 2011 08:47 AM PDT I’ve seen a handful of hubless concept bikes but the Synapse Bike goes one further with integrated electric motors to assist the rider. The design opens up the entire bike, giving the designer control over structural elements (in this case, lack thereof). It’s minimal, elegant, slightly aggressive, but overall dynamic. It’s like riding on no support structure at all. Designer: Sylvain Gerber ---------- |
Posted: 20 May 2011 12:03 AM PDT Okay, so… I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but this is one sexy coffin. I always thought I wanted to be cremated, but Jacob Jensen’s Diamant Coffin Series has made me have a change of heart. The design, a winner of the prestigious 2011 Red Dot Award, combines sustainable materials and stealthy aesthetic into a resting place that would even make Dracula jealous. On a softer note, the diamond inspired shape’s highest point lines up with the deceased’s heart, signifying love and eternity. Designer: Jacob Jensen ---------- |
Posted: 20 May 2011 12:02 AM PDT I love a design that makes you second-guess what you’re seeing. The Gravity Table by Simone Savini is one of those head-turning designs that will make a fantastic yet refined creative statement. Its abrupt transparent feet give the illusion that it’s floating on air, while its ghostly minimal body makes it almost seem possible. A great conversation piece that only gets more fun after a few drinks. Designer: Simone Savini ---------- |
Posted: 20 May 2011 12:01 AM PDT NextOfKin Creatives goal in designing the EcoWater CES purification system was to deconstruct and reduce the system to its core components and simplest form to create the most compact design available. Three main cylindrical shapes make up the core and house the primary components: the filtration column, hot water tank, and re-engineered compact water pump. The cylinders are angled forward to create a sense of motion and play for the user, while paying an homage to the classic pitcher. Designer: NextOfKin Creatives ---------- |
