| HTC EVO 4G Update Today Aims to Correct Massive Blunder Collection Posted: 20 Jun 2011 11:38 AM PDT Remember this massively popular post which aimed to note every one of the vast collection of breaks that happened with the last EVO update? The folks responsible for said evil have been flogged, apparently, and a new update is floating across airwaves today. This update is marked 4.24.651.1 and should be coming across immediately if not soon. A full list of improvements and fixes can be found below, and you’re sure as heck welcome to check out that original post to see if any of the problems you had in the past were amongst the common.
Fixes include a hopefully true repair of the problem with sending of text messages to random recipients, the changing of ME to YO in sms conversations in Spanish, a fixing of your ability to stream media through apps – this having been broken by the update classified 3.7, and the re-appearance of email attachments! These are only a few of the full list that can be see above and by clicking the image in the gallery below. These fixes are almost exclusively selected from problems caused by the update that came previously from Sprint, a carrier not looking good in the least after such a fabulously hole-ridden update. You should be able to grab this update by heading to your menu, hitting Settings, going to System updates, and hitting HTC software update. If the update is available to you at that moment it should automatically begin to load. If you aren’t amongst the lucky, you’ll just have to wait longer. Updates, again, start today and should be rolling out to everyone across the USA soon. The last time an official update came through, it was version 4.22.651.2 and had many of the same fixes supposedly coming through. Will this update be the one to bring the EVO 4G back to normalcy? We shall see. Meanwhile you’re certainly encouraged to unload any gripes you’ve got with the update below, as this appears to be the best way to contact the carrier in question so that they’ll make sure the update is functional. Let us know how it goes! Also note that this entire post and several posts before it have been pushed out to you using the mobile hotspot on the HTC EVO 3D, a device which we’ll have a review of up for you later today! |
| Verizon Tiered Data Plans Start July 7th – Heavy Users Beware! Posted: 20 Jun 2011 10:33 AM PDT The following is a report on what prices you’re going to be paying for all 4G LTE data on your DROID Charge, HTC ThunderBolt, LG Revolution, and soon your Motorola XOOM (which will soon be called XOOM 4G or XOOM LTE) as well as all of your 3G devices. Gone will be the days of unlimited data plans, in will be the terrifying onset of tiered data. While this setup will more than likely not affect those who only use LTE to check their email, those who use the connection to download games, run videos, and generally go through their day swapping data like madmen and women will be opening up their wallets and dumping out the contents, if you know what I mean. Recent polls point toward these power users being rather Android inclined, so we’ve got to put the word out to you!
The following list of prices has been passed to us by an anonymous source, but upon searching we’ve found the same list to have been passed to our pals at Phandroid as well as DROID Life so unless there’s one intricate trickster out there covering all the bases, we’ve got to note that this seems pretty legit.
Each of these plans is upgradable for an extra $20 a month to be able to use your until-now free mobile hotspot with a bonus 2GB (again, per month). Tablets will have a separate data plan as well, this one following the following guidelines instead of the above:
Again this set of details will affect both 3G and 4G devices and ONLY new devices not already on contract. AKA if you’ve already got a device on a plan that’s cheaper than this, you’ll be fine for the time being. Whether or not this will affect those hoping to upgrade to a new device (perhaps from a 3G to a 4G device, for example,) is still unclear. Will this affect whether or not you purchase a Verizon device after July 7th? Also note that this directly correlates with the extension of free service Verizon has noted for their 4G LTE mobile hotspots on devices such as the HTC ThunderBolt. You’ll have that extra amount of time (until the 6th, that is,) to enjoy said free service, while your unlimited data should remain past that point if you’re already locked into a contract. Any questions? |
| DROID3 and Motorola XOOM LTE Announced in Verizon MAP, Close to Launch! Posted: 20 Jun 2011 09:50 AM PDT It appears that our friends at DroidLife have just been handed another piece to the ongoing puzzle we’ve got going here with two devices of some note: the DROID3 (aka DROID 3 with a space as this release would have us believe,) and the Motorola XOOM LTE. The latter device is the subject of an extended accessories post we just added this morning to the Android Community feed, thought the name is certainly worth some discussion. There are two versions of the Motorola XOOM currently available for sale, that being the Verizon connected version which is, as they say, upgradable to 4G LTE, and the Wi-Fi only version which you can get at Target. Now they’re speaking of an LTE version of the tablet, which should be all means be confusing to those already owning a XOOM from Verizon as they’ve been promised an upgrade to LTE in the near future.
This newest version XOOM is part of a new commercial released then pulled then released again by Verizon, them calling it the Motorola XOOM 4G. Have a look below this paragraph for that video. We’re also keeping our eyes open for the Motorola XOOM 2 by the way, this device also the subject of a leak of some note very recently. Also remember that this newest XOOM will, without a doubt, be being released with Android 3.1 Honeycomb – a review of which you can devour right this moment courtesy of your friends here at Android Community.
The question remains though, will this new XOOM LTE be a whole new version of the device, or will it just be a name change for the same device with newly bestowed 4G powers? We’re betting on the latter. It makes a whole lot more sense than releasing a new device, especially since there’d be a rage festival at the release of an LTE XOOM before the original XOOM was given the powers it was promised at its release. What do you think? Then there’s the DROID3, previously mentioned to be heading to Verizon for July 7th, 2011. This device is also known as the Motorola Milestone3 in places like China, and it’s just RARING to go here in the states. We’ve had a brief look at the device a few weeks ago in some lovely photos and back in May we even got a look at some early benchmarks of said DROID. This would be the newest addition to a line of devices that are carried and named by Verizon, other family members including the 4G LTE enabled DROID Charge and the Motorola DROID X2. Can’t wait for the flow to continue!

| AlwaysOnPC is world’s first subscription virtual PC for Android Posted: 20 Jun 2011 09:20 AM PDT If you are an Android user a very cool new app has landed that will give access to a virtual computer on your smartphone or tablet. The new app comes by way of Xform Computing and is called AlwaysOnPC mobile. Right now, the app is on the Verizon VCAST Apps store as a mobile subscription offering. The app will give the Android user a complete virtual PC accessible from the Android device wherever they are. The app also has Dropbox integration and more.
Other features include the ability to access full featured image editing software, copy/paste between any app, and 2GB of storage. The app also allows the user to run Chrome with in-browser Java from Android devices allowing access to all sorts of sites that aren’t normally available on the Android device directly. All of the connections between the Android device and the virtualized computer are encrypted to protect data. None of the data is loaded or cached on the mobile device. That security makes the app usable by enterprise workers where security is a concern. The app offers a free trial and is priced at $2.99 monthly directly to the Verizon bill. |
| ZTE Blade/ Orange San Francisco finally gets Android OS update Posted: 20 Jun 2011 09:06 AM PDT If you are a fan of the mid-range ZTE Blade known as the Orange San Francisco and have been wishing that the device would get an OS update the time is here. The San Fran was one of the more popular budget Android devices in the UK and what probably bothered many was that the device was running Android 2.1. That version of the OS is certainly long in the tooth by most standards. ZTE has announced that it is set to upgrade the OS on all Blade variants.
The new update will bring the smartphone to Android 2.2 Froyo. That will leave the San Francisco and other Blade brethren off the mark for the most current Android flavor, which is now Android 2.3 Gingerbread. However, Froyo is much better than the older version of the OS the devices were using. I wonder why the OS bump didn’t take the San Fran all the way to 2.3. I wonder if it has something to do with memory or if ZTE just didn’t want to allot the resources needed to move to the latest version of the OS. Froyo is certainly better than what the smartphone was running. The update will go out later this month so if you own one of the ZTE Blade variants keep an eye out. [via Unwiredview] |
| Adobe updates Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5 to support more platforms Posted: 20 Jun 2011 08:49 AM PDT
The new update allows Android devs that are already familiar with the software tools to use the Adobe software for other platforms. Flash Builder 4.5 lets applications work seamlessly across multiple leading platforms. The Flex 4.5 update also adds new enhancements to improve developer productivity. Developers can use practice code templates, code completion and generation features in Flash Builder 4.5. The development platform also allows the software to run on desktop and notebook computers. Adobe says that many apps using Flash Builder and Flex have already been published to the Android Market, App Store, and to other app markets for various platforms. |
| Grab Motorola XOOM Accessories for Half Off by Registering your Tablet by June 26th Posted: 20 Jun 2011 08:26 AM PDT The group that brought you the very first Android 3.0 Honeycomb device, Motorola, is currently running a promotion for owners of that device, allowing them to exchange a relatively quick registration process for the ability to purchase official accessories for 50% off their original list price. Motorola is promoting this offer through several sources including their official Facebook Page where they remind users that they’ve got until Noon ET to take advantage of this special offer. This offer also comes on top of a similar Buy a Motorola Xoom Wifi and get a Bluetooth Keyboard Free offer, leading us to believe that they’ve got a surplus of accessories waiting in the wings.
User can also take advantage of the excellent Motorola XOOM Keyboard Folio Case for $85 and free 2-day shipping or grab a Camera Connection Kit if you’re lucky enough to be in one of the Verizon locations carrying such an oddity. For everyone else, there’s a big 15% off sale going on online at Verizon Wireless, this including every single XOOM accessory they’ve got in stock. This selection is missing, notably, the camera connection kit just mentioned, and has the keyboard folio case for a grand total of $84.99, nearly 1/6 the cost of the unit itself.
To learn more about the Motorola XOOM if you’re thinking about purchasing one for it’s current Verizon price of $599, head over to our Gigantic Review and learn the truth! Once you’ve got the tablet, be sure to pick up the most excellent tablet-based app we’ve seen in recent weeks, that being News360 for Honeycomb, a news feed reader that’ll make you empirically joyous for having purchased an Android tablet. If you’re still skeptical of said XOOM purchase, head to our also giant Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet review, a tablet that’ll make you think twice before purchasing another Android tablet or even an iPad, believe it or not! Then of course there’s the G-Slate, making this a three-way battle you’ll never forget! You’ll also want to be picking up the fabulous beta build of Swype 3.0 for Honeycomb as it’ll change your touch-keyboard experience for the better forever. You won’t even need a folio case at all, I’m telling ya! You should also know what you’re getting into with this Honeycomb business with Google’s official presentation on the newest version Android 3.1 Honeycomb which will be featured on all XOOMs from here into the future as well as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 just mentioned a moment ago. And do not fret, for if you’ve still got a XOOM after all this, you can take comfort in knowing that it’s still one of the most powerful Android devices on the market, continuing to beat the competition on a regular basis! Oh and don’t forget about XOOM 4G! |
| MIUI for Galaxy S II 1.6.17 ROM available in alpha form Posted: 20 Jun 2011 07:34 AM PDT If you own a Samsung Galaxy S II and are a fan of MIUI interface custom ROMs for Android a new alpha version of the smartphone has now landed. The ROM is only in alpha stage now and the devs are very clear that you can’t expect a fully functional ROM right now. The devs do give a nice list of what is working and what isn’t working and the list of what’s not may keep all but the most ardent tinkerers away right now.
Right now the ROM will boot up, shows the screen, hardware keys, internal storage, and SD card as well as offering functioning Bluetooth. What isn't working and are still on the to-do list includes the boot logo, the ability to get a phone and data connection to make the phone actually work, and WiFi. Various sounds and other items are still missing as well. If you want to put the alpha ROM onto your S II, you can download the file needed on the XDA-developers forums and there are complete install instructions too. The install instructions include reboot to CWM, wipe the cache, data, system, and Dalvik cache and install the ROM form a SD card. You need to select MIUI-test.zip as well. When a fully functional ROM will be offered is unknown. You can see the boot process of an S II running the alpha ROM on the video below. [via XDA-Developers] |
| XPERIA X10 Android 2.3 Gingerbread update coming August [Video] Posted: 20 Jun 2011 07:18 AM PDT Sony Ericsson has announced that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the XPERIA X10 is on track for a roll-out from the beginning of August 2011. The company has also released a video demo of the upgrade in action – which you can see below – as well as confirming just what features have made it in – or been left out – of the new ROM.
After user requests, the original camera UI from the Eclair build has been left in the Gingebread update. The Facebook Inside XPERIA tweaks – which allow for sharing from the media player, browser and other apps – are present, as is most of the functionality from the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc.
However, Sony Ericsson will not be including DLNA support out of the box, due to the inherent delays in getting type approvals, though third-party apps are available in the Android Market. Generic trade versions of the X10 will get the update first, followed by some operator models. However, the company warns that – as said before – some operator-supplied models will not be eligible for the Gingerbread update. |
| PsiXpda Android MID could use Psion Series 5mx keyboard design Posted: 20 Jun 2011 05:09 AM PDT An innovative hinge design more than 14 years old could give Android MID enthusiasts a QWERTY keyboard worth typing on, if niche computing firm PsiXpda has its way. The company – which tested the UMPC waters in late 2009 with a Windows XP based unit, reviewed by SlashGear – intends to channel the design of the much-loved Psion Series 5mx in a new, Android-based model.
PsiXpda founder Paul Pinnock told Reghardware that while the original Atom-based UMPC was “not fast enough and not good enough” and failed to live up to the Psion comparisons made in promotions at the time, the new model will be altogether more interesting. The design will be based on the Psion Series 5mx, which used a clever folding-sliding hinge so as to fit a large QWERTY ‘board (with surprisingly decent key-travel) and a 5.6-inch touchscreen into a pocket-sized palmtop. We can’t argue with Pinnock’s decision to use Android, and a lot of us still have warm memories of Psion hardware and its under-appreciated OS. No word on when, exactly, the new PsiXpda model will hit the market, nor for how much, but we won’t argue with easier typing on something larger than the average smartphone slide-out thumbboard. | LG Optimus 3D hits June 27 in UK; pre-orders open now Posted: 20 Jun 2011 04:03 AM PDT It’s been a while since we reviewed the LG Optimus 3D, and the dual-core 3D-recording smartphone is finally showing up in stores. After the Optimus 3D got the official green flag last week, UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has confirmed that it is taking pre-orders for shipments expected from June 27, and ahead of an in-store release on July 7 2011.
The Optimus 3D is priced at £499.95 ($808) SIM-free, or from free with a new, two-year agreement. Your money gets you a glasses-free 4.3-inch 3D display, capable of showing 3D images without you needing to wear ridiculous specs, along with a twin 5-megapixel camera on the back for shooting photos and video in the third dimension. On the downside is the fact that, even as the number of Gingerbread smartphones proliferates, LG is still launching the Optimus 3D with Android 2.2. Still, your options for 3D cellphones in the UK are limited, and with the HTC EVO 3D – reviewed this weekend over at SlashGear – not expected in Europe for a while yet, the LG may be your best bet for the moment. |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 3G supporting AT&T bands hits FCC Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:58 AM PDT We have liked what we have seen in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 so far around here. If you have liked the WiFi version of the tablet, which is available around the country today, and wished there was a 3G version to get instead your wish may be coming soon. A new version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has turned up at the FCC. There isn’t a lot of detail on the device and we still have no confirmation by AT&T that the tablet will hit its network or what the thing will cost. What we do know is that the tablet has AT&T 3G frequencies inside.
The FCC data shows that the new version of the tablet will support the GSM 850 and 1900 frequencies and WCDMA bands II and V. The use of those bands would seemingly be a direct indication that the tablet is heading to AT&T. However, there is no official confirmation from AT&T on that. The model number for the new tablet is GT-P7500 and the FCC approvals are usually the last thing needed for the tablet to come to store shelves. Other than the 3G hardware inside, the tablets have the same features as the WiFi only Galaxy Tab 10.1 we already know all about. That means Android 3.1 Honeycomb for the operating system, a 10.1-inch screen with 1280 x 800 resolutions, and a GHz dual core processor. Pricing is unknown, but it would be a safe bet that you could add $100 to the price of the WiFi only 16GB and 32GB tablets and be at the 3G price. [SlashGear via Wireless Goodness] |
| Huawei MediaPad official: 7-inch dual-core Android 3.2 tablet Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:12 AM PDT Huawei has taken the wraps off of its MediaPad tablet, the first 7-inch slate to run Android 3.2 Honeycomb. According to Huawei, Android 3.2 basically fettles Honeycomb to suit the 7-inch slate, which also comes with HSPA+ 14.4Mbps connectivity, WiFi b/g/n, an IPS capacitive touchscreen display and HDMI Full HD 1080p output.
Inside there’s Qualcomm’s 1.2GHz dual-core processor – presumably the same chip as inside the HTC Sensation – along with an unspecified amount of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. There’s also Bluetooth, GPS and twin cameras: 5-megapixels on the back, with autofocus and HD video recording, and 1.3-megapixels upfront, for video calls. At 11.98mm thick and 390g it’s reasonably compact, and Huawei reckons the battery is good for up to 6hrs runtime. Facebook, Twitter, Let’s Golf and Documents To Go will be preloaded, and Flash Player 10.3 supported. No word on pricing at this stage, and Huawei apparently has no plans for a WiFi-only model. US availability is tipped for Q3 2011.

| T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G Slide Featured in Crystal Clear Leak Posted: 19 Jun 2011 08:05 PM PDT TmoNews has gotten their hands on some crystal clear images of the long rumored HTC myTouch 4G Slide. While the original myTouch 4G came out last November, rumors of this keyboard-bearing version have been swirling about since March. While we still don’t know when the phone might launch, these pictures came along with a few more bonus details about what to expect when it does.
The myTouch 4G Slide looks pretty similar to the original, but features a slide out keyboard. TMoNews’ tipster gave a quick comparison to HTC’s last keyboard bearing phone, the G2 (known as the Desire Z internationally). The tipster said that the keyboard feels similar in quality to the G2, but the phone itself is slightly heavier. The myTouch 4G has a slightly larger screen then the G2 did though, perhaps explaining the weight difference, but no number was given for this version. Software wise, the phone is said to be running Gingerbread, and according to the tipster “Sense much like the Sensation but with some specific myTouch features.” We imagine this references the “genius button” which has been featured on all of T-Mo’s “myTouch” devices thus far. By “much like the Sensation,” it seems safe to assume it is running Sense 3.0, the newest version featured on both the Sensation and the Evo 3D. The image shows a launcher which is much more similar to the original myTouch 4G’s then the Sense 3.0 launcher though, so we’ll have to wait and see if this is an aesthetic difference or if it is an older version of Sense. That is the extent of the specifics given, but the tipster mentions that the phone is “surprisingly fast.” Hopefully this hints at a dual-core processor, but for now all we can do is speculate for now. With a leak this blatant it hopefully won’t be long before some more concrete details emerge. myTouch and keyboard fans stay tuned if you’re looking to this as your next device. [via TmoNews] |
