| Xperia Play, Galaxy Tab 10.1 benchmarks, AR Drone upgrades: US Update Posted: 08 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT
The Xperia Play Experience Pack has just been announced by Sony Ericsson at E3. The pack includes the DK300 multimedia dock, a pocket USB cable, a music cable to connect the dock to your audio system and three games from Gameloft. Apparently the malware threats for Android are on the rise, at least according to Norton's presentation yesterday. The Anti-virus leader believes the Android malware threat will be experienced in several ways: premium billing rates, spyware, search engine poisoning, adware and pay-per installs. The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 has been benchmark by PhoneArena. Using the Quadrant and AnTutu benchmarks, the team delivered some surprising news — the retail version scored nearly 500 points lower than the prototype! Parrot has confirmed the AR Drone now supports Android, Symbian and Samsung's bada. The Drone creators unveiled AR race, a free app for creating custom circuits, and an international AR Drone flying competition, set to kick off later this month. Last up this morning is an announcement from Panasonic. The company has confirmed plans to use a dual-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 processor to power its TVs. Combined with its UniPhier processor, the next wave of TVs will be capable of two simultaneous TV broadcasts, Internet based content and applications in stunning HD. That wraps up the latest and greatest in this fine world of tech news. As always I'm Nick Marshall and I'll see you again tomorrow. Related posts:

| Next wave of Panasonic TVs will sport Cortex A9 dual-core 1.4 GHz processors Posted: 08 Jun 2011 09:30 AM PDT
Speed is one thing, but high-performance 3D graphics in full HD is what counts. The Cortex-A9 is no slouch in that department, capable of delivering up all the tasty digital goods your heart desires alongside a wide array of audio and video codec support. Panasonic is using the dual-core CPU in conjunction with its UniPhier processor which has a proven track record in high quality audio and video processing. In addition to the sheer speed, the new chips will consume 40 percent less power and provide the foundation necessary to support two simultaneous TV broadcasts, Internet based content and applications. It might be a bit premature to call, but the HTPC market may be on its way out. Sample shipments of Panasonic’s new UniPhier system LSI well begin later this month and with any luck we'll see the new TVs before year's end. Coming Soon | Panasonic | TBD Related posts:

| Parrot AR Drone lands Android support, international competition incoming! Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:46 AM PDT
Like an episode of Looney Tunes, that's not all folks. For the developers in attendance, Parrot has released a SDK to develop new applications for AR Drone across iOS, Android, bada and Symbian. In addition, Parrot announced AR Race, a race game which supports one to four pilots. AR race is more than a free app (available today in the App Store) for creating custom circuits to race your Drone. There's actually physical accessories (available at parrotshopping.com) for your courses such as pylons and donuts. The last leg to Parrot's big E3 announcement is the AR Drone Challenges which kick off on June 24th. After registering at ardrone.com participants will have three video challenges where they'll have to film their flying skills. The top 14 win a spot in the grand international final, set to take place in Paris on October 1, 2011. Out Now | Parrot | Free Related posts:

| Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 benchmarked, edges out Motorola Xoom Posted: 08 Jun 2011 07:45 AM PDT
The 1 GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor inside the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 scores marginally better than its predecessor, the Motorola Xoom. In the AnTutu Benchmark, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 scored a 3,729 — edging out both the Motorola Xoom and LG Optimus 2x. Considering all three devices sport the same chipset, this was a bit of a surprise.
Overall the user experience will dictate whether the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is right for you. Benchmarks are like spec sheets — looking good on paper (or in this case a Benchmark) is only have the story. A responsive UI and for Android, timely updates, lead to the best real world performance. The battle for our Android Honeycomb dollar will likely be won by the tablet which manages to be first on Google's update list. via PhoneArena Related posts:

| Norton: Android security threats just beginning Posted: 08 Jun 2011 07:12 AM PDT
The company believes Android is an attractive target because of the following pre-requisites: "it's open, ubiquitous and monetizable". The Android malware threat will be experienced in several ways: premium billing rates, spyware, search engine poisoning, adware and pay-per installs.
With the openness of Android, 'trojanizing' an app is rather simple. Save the app to your computer, decompile it, tack on some malicious code, adjust the manifest and recompile. Without a governing body overseeing app submissions, an infected app can easily be submitted into the Android Market. It's worth mentioning that compared to desktop malware, the threat is minor. There's a mere 22 families of threats, most of which come from China which nest in its third-party app stores. The threat of Android malware is in its infancy stage — that is until the attacks start generating significant revenue. Once that happens, expect a full-fledged war. via IntoMobile Related posts:

| Nintendo Wii U UK price and launch date: Zavvi plucks them out of the air Posted: 08 Jun 2011 06:21 AM PDT
Still, if you’re after a Nintendo Wii U you can actually pre-order one now for a hefty £399.85, with expected delivery on 20 July next year. Hmm.
At its E3 keynote yesterday, Nintendo made no mention of a price, and only committed to a launch sometime between April and December 2012. Today, Japanese publication Nikkei Newspaper quotes Nintendo president Satoru Iwata as stating “I don’t think we can charge the same price as we currently do for the Wii.” The Wii now sells for as little as £99 in the UK, and originally went on sale ate £179.99 back in 2006. From what we’ve seen so far, the Nintendo Wii U and its insane screen sharing controller ought to cost a fair bit more – hopefully not four hundred quid though. Related posts:

| Xperia Play Experience Pack: the new killer accessory bundle? Posted: 08 Jun 2011 05:42 AM PDT
As the first PlayStation Certified Android smartphone, the Xperia Play has a long way to go before transforming Android gaming like we had hoped. However, the Xperia Play Experience Pack is a step in the right direction, offering your choice of any three titles from the following list:
Assassin's Creed – Altair's Chronicles, Uno, Real Football 2011, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Let's Golf! 2, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction, Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front, N.O.V.A. 2 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance or Eternal Legacy. The game will be dowloaded using the QR-code included within the packaging or by using the url listed on the voucher along with an activation code. If you haven't picked up the DK300 multimedia dock yet, this could be the perfect opportunity — let's just hope the price is right. Release date and pricing information have yet to be announced. | The best upcycled gadget accessories Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:53 AM PDT Upcycling is like recycling, but even better for the environment. It involves making products from leftover materials, so in other words finding a new use for something that otherwise would've gone to waste. Unlike recycling, nothing is wasted at all. And while you’re at it, you'll see the most innovative use ever for your old plastic bags.
This stylish iPad case is made from excess wetsuit material that otherwise would've been discarded. Not only does it help the environment, it'll keep your 'Pad nice and safe too. It also has small zippered pockets holding loose change, business cards, and anything else you want to take with you. $26 (£15) These lamps look like some kind of trendy industrial design, but take a closer look and you'll see they're actually used ink cartridges from an Epson printer. Each is made from four stuck together, and you can customise by choosing whichever colours you want. They were sold through Etsy, but aren't on the site at the moment – here's hoping they rectify that pretty soon. $45 (£27) Make your own laptop case from plastic bags Don't let the irritating intro put you off, this is the coolest use of plastic bags we've ever seen. First up, let’s talk gaming. E3 is still ongoing, and with it comes the fallout from the two big announcements. Firstly, we now know that Sony will sell the PlayStation Vita portable at a loss, while on the Nintendo side of things, it appears that game footage for big blockbuster titles headed to the Wii U was actually culled form rival consoles. Closer to home meanwhile, Auntie announced its plans to broadcast Wimbledon matches in 3D, while Sony showed off a brand new NEX camera to take on the Micro Four Thirds shooters of rivals. Finally, we set loose our full review of the HTC Salsa Android phone. Has the Facebook button been worth waiting for? Still want more news?
