Top three reasons Nokia should reconsider a future with Android

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 12:50 PM PDT

Top three reasons Nokia should reconsider a future with AndroidIt's safe to say Symbian innovation failed to compete with either iOS or Android over the past 12 to 18 months. Realizing the downward spiral in its high-end smartphone sales, Nokia made a wise move and began searching for a new software partner. Though the decision has been made, Stephen Elop mentioned Nokia considered Android prior to accepting Microsoft's offer. Here's three reasons why Mr. Elop should reconsider.

1. Apps / Developers
The quickest way to sink great hardware in today's mobile market is to release a smartphone without overwhelming developer support. Don't believe us? Just ask the folks behind webOS. Despite having an amazing OS and quality hardware, webOS failed to build out a sizable application library. To this day its biggest hurdle, even for the soon-to-be released HP TouchPad, will be apps.

Android has hundreds of thousands of apps with developers lining up in droves to be the next app millionaire. Anyway you shake it, there's two contenders fighting for the title of app store king — iOS and Android. Nokia hardware with Android software is not a guarantee for success, but it certainly increases the odds.

2. Growth
Before the iPhone, manufacturers laughed at the idea of an Apple-dominated smartphone market. A year later Google released Android to a similar tune. Today, the combination of these operating systems represents more than 57 percent of the worldwide smartphone market. By 2012 Android will command 50 percent of the market on its own accord. For comparison Microsoft maintains 5.6 percent.

Without diving into statistics and probability, common sense tells us that shipping hardware running an OS used by nearly half the worldwide smartphone market is a great opportunity. Granted, there's more competition among hardware vendors using Android, but Microsoft controls the hardware specifications of Windows Phone making it difficult to differentiate. Compared to the dozens of Android smartphones on the market, Nokia hardware and optics remain unmatched. This competitive advantage is exactly what both Android and Nokia need.

3. Tablets
Neither Microsoft nor Google has enjoyed a very successful tablet existence. Microsoft has toyed with the concept for years, but failed to gain traction. In the four months since Android Honeycomb launched, the Mountain View team has proven it has the resources necessary to deliver timely updates. The only thing missing is Nokia hardware.

Three months is an eternity in the world of mobile and in some cases, almost impossible to overcome. Windows 8 may represent the future for Microsoft-powered tablets, but Android Honeycomb is readily available today. In a month or two when Windows 8 enters the market, Google will be even further ahead. It's only a matter of time before Gingerbread developers make the jump to Honeycomb. Without developers and a refined tablet OS, Nokia will enjoy a view from the sidelines in the tablet war.

iOS 5 third party notification center widgets headed to an iPhone near you

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 08:30 AM PDT

iOS 5 third party notification center widgets headed to an iPhone near youThe pull down notification center is only second to the lock screen as the most useful addition in iOS 5. Though still in beta, iOS 5 looks to have a new hidden feature, "widget creator module", which allows developers to add third party widgets to the notification center. The drop down never looked so good.

Yesterday we reported on the capacitive multi-touch patent awarded to Apple. Packed within this filing was mention of "user-created widget(s)" and the "widget creator module". When you consider both of these elements, the logical conclusion is that iOS 5 will allow both the creation and installation of third party widgets in the notification center.

Technically speaking third party widgets are feasible. We've seen demonstrations by developers and similar customization by the jailbreaking community. While not confirmed, the evidence appears to support the possibility third party widgets will find their way to the notification center. Let's just hope Apple carries over this functionality in the final iOS 5 release later this year.

Nokia N9 Sea Ray eyes Android following Windows Phone 7 demo

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Nokia N9 eyes Android following Windows Phone 7 demoYesterday when Stephen Elop showed off what looked to be a Nokia N9 running Windows Phone 7 Mango we had our doubts over the authenticity of the video. Today that same device, codenamed "Sea Ray", is running Android Gingerbread. Is it just me or is the N9 going through a bit of an identity crisis?

First spotted by Vlad Savov from Engadget, the Android-powered N9 "Sea Ray" was confirmed by the same Chinese source who leaked images of Nokia's first Windows Phone handset in May. As we now know, those images correspond to the N9 "Sea Ray", leading us to believe today's leak is also in fact true.

Android running on the N9 "Sea Ray" is not the wildest port we could imagine. Honestly, we'd been hoping all along Nokia would re-consider a partnership with Google so we could have the best-in-class optics with our favorite OS. Today it appears we might be one step closer in reaching that goal.

Based on the images leaked by the Chinese source, the Gingerbread port to the N9 "Sea Ray" looks to be a work in progress. Let's just hope it sees a life outside of the cutting room floor. Anyone else dreaming of an Android-powered Nokia N9?

Explore applications on the HP TouchPad with webOS Pivot

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:05 AM PDT

Explore applications on the HP TouchPad with webOS PivotOn July 15th when the HP TouchPad launches in the UK, the company will also launch HP webOS Pivot. Described as "an entertaining and informative editorial resource for discovering webOS 3.0 applications", Pivot promises to be your one-stop shop for finding the latest on TouchPad content. If you're planning or currently develop for webOS, Pivot is just one of the new ways HP is helping to market your apps.

HP webOS Pivot is not your average app store. In fact it's nothing like you've seen before. Pivot is driven by original content by journalists and photographers affiliated with leading publications with a focus of applications. Content will be catered to the specific interests and requirements of a given region, appealing to a wide range of international customers.

In short, HP webOS Pivot is the first of many commitments by HP to help its developers reach success. Rather than simply browsing an app store and reading user submitted reviews, Pivot focuses on professional writers whose job it is to sift through applications on a daily basis. The mixture of editorials and reviews is an interesting twist, but will it pay off?

For anyone planning on picking up the HP TouchPad next month, what do you think about the idea of using webOS Pivot to discover new webOS 3.0 content?

Team Fortress 2 is now free to play on PC and Mac via Steam

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 06:23 AM PDT

Team Fortress 2 is now free to play on PC and Mac via SteamOne of the most popular online action games, Team Fortress 2, is now free on both PC and Mac. The new "free to play" promotion carries a few limitations compared to a premium account, but we're inclined to download now and ask questions later. Here's a quick account comparison to get you up to speed.

Team Fortress 2 free accounts feature 50 backpack slots versus 300 slots for premium accounts (expandable to 1000). Items are limited to standard, you'll have access to limited blueprints, and items and gifts can only be received, not sent.

To join in the fun you'll need either a PC or Mac and Steam installed. If you decide you'd like to switch over to a premium account, simply make a purchase of any amount in the in-game Mann Co. store. Alternatively if you purchase a retail copy of TF2 your account will automatically be upgraded.

HTC Honeycomb Android tablet: Five ways it can beat the competition

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 05:18 AM PDT

HTC is still rumoured to be launching a new Android tablet running Honeycomb. Here are five ways it can beat the competition and come out on top in the tablet wars.

Movie streaming

Google Movies still isn’t out in the UK but HTC has its own movies on demand service – HTC Watch – which will provide streaming or downloadable movies straight to the device.

Stylus included

Steve Jobs famously said of the in-development iPad, “If you see a stylus, they blew it.” but we actually rather like the stylus that HTC recommends for the HTC Flyer. It isnt compulsory but it does make certain things easier and we are glad to have the option.

Cloudy outlook

iCloud is Apple’s big new idea, but HTC Sense has had cloud services since last year. Backing up over the air to the HTC cloud seems like a no-brainer.

Usable speakers

Most tablet speakers leave a lot to be desired and can make multimedia use a chore. If HTC throws in something a little more powerful than usual the new slab could be a great movie viewing platform.

Facebook button

The HTC Cha Cha’s built-in Facebook button seemed like a silly gimmick when we first saw it but it turns out it is really useful. Go on, HTC, give us a button. We’ll ‘Like’ it.

PlayStation Network hack: Did Sony cut security staff first?

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 04:58 AM PDT

Sony’s PR disaster regarding the Playstation Network hack may have taken another dive – a new lawsuit alleges that Sony fired several internet security staff right before the hack took place.

As the saying goes, Hindsight is 20/20. Sadly, if these new claims are true Sony exec’s vision might be impaired by the palms in front of their faces.

The PlayStation Network hack has cost Sony dearly in terms of damage to its reputation alone but could the attack have been prevented? A series of lawsuits filed against the company allege that it could and that Sony is partly to blame for the security disaster.

In particular, a lawsuit filed this week alleges that Sony fired “a substantial percentage” of staff from its Network Operations Centre – many of whom would have been responsible for fighting off hacking attempts such as those that breached the PSN security and spilled user account details all over the web.

The PlayStation Network has only returned to active duty in Europe recently after being shut down for several weeks. The Japanese PlayStation Network is still down, pending a Government review.

Play Minecraft Zelda now!

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 04:15 AM PDT

Minecraft mods just keep getting more and more impressive. One brick-wielding wizard has knocked up a tribute to the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time using Minecraft’s toolkit. Find out how you can play Zelda Adventure right now.

Zelda Adventure is a fully-working ‘tribute’ to the classic Zelda games – particularly Ocarina of Time, all written using the amazingly tweakable Minecraft.

Minecraft modder Gary520 has released a trailer for what he plans to be a 10-hour quest, recreating many of the elements from the console games including 8 dungeons to explore, 20 unique weapons, collectable items and numerous NPCs to interact with.

If you want to try it out a demo version is available from the Minecraft Forum. You might want to act fast, though – Nintendo is famously twitchy about unauthorised tributes and this could get yanked at a moment’s notice.

PS3 price drop due August: How will Xbox respond?

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 03:42 AM PDT

There are rumours that Sony plans to slash the price of the PS3 to around £199, with some retailers likely to offer the console as low as £179. Can the Xbox 360 compete?

With all that Playstation Network hacking nastiness, PS3 fans have had their noses put out of joint by the security problems that kept them off PSN for weeks. Some good new might be on the way, however, as industry sources are reporting that Sony will cut the price of the PS3 – meaning you could soon snap one up for less than £200.

Since the PS3 launched the rival Xbox 360 has had price as a trump card but soon the top-end Xbox is going to be the same price as a PS3 – and it doesn’t have Blu-Ray to tempt you into buying.

Although there are rumours of a new Xbox console next year, nothing has been confirmed and Microsoft might have to get creative to stay competitive. Hopefully this will mean more price cuts but we expect to see better Kinect bundles and other goodies to entice gamers to the 360 side of the fence. Either way, there could be some real bargains on the way.
