Posted: 02 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT In Nordic countries, the need for transportation is simple but demanding. The driving distances vary from long to short and the seasons vary greatly. The vehicle should be as comfortable as a luxury sedan but also as compact as a hatchback, offering an ecological option with enough space for a medium sized family. Tah da! The Michelin Active Wheel concept – Maininki. Combined with the changeable chassis length, the concept is extremely well suited for the demands of Nordic climates. Designer: Antti Eskeli ---------- |
Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:58 AM PDT Gadgets rule me! I am one of those people who get all gooey-eyed at the sight of slick concepts and the possibilities of a future where technology is so advanced that nothing is impossible; and of course robots can cry! This brings me to the near future where Tablets have evolved as the Lifebook Concept by Alan Donnelly. I’m already salivating at the specs! Hit jump to know more… Tech Specs

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:58 AM PDT Integral Studio Vinaccia had two issues to address when designing a Ski Helmet for the IDI brand: 1 – Feeling of heat and sweating; 2 – Ski Goggles that didn't look so dorky and typical. To solve the problem they did a combination of retro and futuristic design with a wire mesh shell and integrated lens system. The result was the Zero5! The first problem was solved with use of wire mesh, closed internally by a gorotex fabric, which allows the steam to go out, but not leave in the water. The second, with a smoke visor with anti-fog treatment, derived from the motorcycle world. The IDI Zero5 Helmet comes with integrated lens, and a Cordura neck protector and is available in four colors: gold, silver, pearl, black. Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:57 AM PDT Unexpected experiences and surprises wait deep down on the ocean floor. Inspired by a creature more alien than anything science fiction can come up with. The CIRRATA is a thesis project consisting of a series of lamps for public indoor environments by Markus Johansson, graduate student from the School of Design and crafts College of Design at the University of Gothenburg. Made of Corian, the result are lamps that challenge all preconceptions about what is possible to achieve with the material. It’s beautiful and looks almost weightless with just the tips of its legs touching the floor. Designer: Markus Johansson ---------- |
Rocking Horse Raises Awareness Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:03 AM PDT As we begin to see more products focus on renewable energy and sustainable design it becomes apparent that we can also expect to see a cultivation of this newfound awareness in children starting at a very young age. The Calidu rocking horse is one design that aims to reinforce this idea by producing just enough power to light it’s OLED lights simply by rocking or collecting sunlight. The sturdy, tip-resistant horse is made of stainless steel, solid oak, an herbal oil finish, and leather fringe tail. Designer: Günther Schunn ---------- |
Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:02 AM PDT Designer Simone Savini is known for creating eye-catching, conversation-starting pieces, and this one has got to be my favorite so far. Touch, defined by sharp lines and continuous movement, is coated in a simple heat-sensitive resin coating that fades from black to white, leaving a temporary trace of the last touch or hot object. As the warmth fades the table returns to its original color ensuring a clean slate every time. Say goodbye to boring dinners! Designer: Simone Savini ---------- |
Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:01 AM PDT Growing up I could be occupied for hours playing with my little trucks and cars, one of my favorites being my cement-mixer truck. This minimal twist on the toy truck isn’t really anything like my cement-mixer, but it is made from cement! Designer Nimrod Or’s goal was to incorporate the familiar material into the design as a reminder of its importance in his native Israel. The pigmented cement might be a little heavy for the really little guys but it’s undoubtedly cute. Designer: Nimrod Or ---------- |
