For all you architecture buffs, there’s this wonderful iPad app called Edition29 ARCHITECTURE. It’s a visual showcase of stunning, minimal and modern homes from all over the world with audio interviews with many of the architects themselves. The current issue (006) features the work of Ben Van Berkel’s VILA NM in upstate New York. This classic example of a modern glass house led to an era of sculptural modernism.

Wrench Open The Door

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 08:35 AM PDT

What do you do when your door handle gives way? Grab a wrench and try and open the door using it? Bingo! The same idea is being applied to the Wrench Handle; the only difference is that it's a gilded, up-scaled version rather than a makeshift quick-fix.

Your Next Charger Could Be A Ball of Yarn

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 08:21 AM PDT

Not a real ball of yarn but close enough to elicit “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” from neighborhood cats. Seriously, spools of yarn are like kitty crack to them. The Wool Ball Charger is an ultra long charging cable disguised as a ball of yarn. You get the length when you need it all in a tight little and dare I say… cute package.

Between The Lines

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:50 AM PDT

Inspired by the emotional connection between object and user, designer Camilla Fucili has created Between The Lines, a collection of dining objects that aim to inspire a sense of play and storytelling at the dining table. The collection includes common dining objects such as plates, utensils, glasses, and a tablecloth, but each presents a unique and articulate twist on the familiar.

01. Romeo&Juliet - A set of plates with a story that goes beyond form and function to talk about people: two halves that function perfectly alone, but become something else when combined together. The inspiration comes from the observation of a woman in the act of covering the food for her partner that was late for dinner.

02. Stretch- A playful utensil inspired by the observation of friends at the table in the act of reaching out to other people’s plates. It recalls the shape of our hands as an invite to be used in a spontaneous and playful way, as if you were using your hands. It functions as an extension of your body and can be used to reach out to other people’s plates or serving plates, to fight, to poke each other, or to feed each other.

03. Allure-  In Asia dining is considered a communal activity and it's part of their culture to eat together and share food. Inspired by this ritual of sharing, this set of plates reflects this cultural behavior. The plates link to each other to create a visual and material connection between people across the table. Their magnetic edges connect them together allowing different setups.

04. Speech- A tablecloth that celebrates and visualizes communication at the table. Dining is a social moment that brings people together to share food, thoughts, laughs, and stories. This tablecloth recalls spoken words without telling them, freezing past conversations in time and allowing new conversations to happen.

05. Cin Cin-  A glass for couples inspired by the intimacy of the act of toasting. To translate this intimacy into the object, it was made out of two parts connected to each other through a joint that allows rotation in both directions. It brings the people's faces very close to each other, reinforcing the intimacy of the moment. The sculptural form of this object goes beyond its usual function and tells a story.

Customize Your Flush!

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:01 AM PDT

Ladies & gents, let’s be totally candid for a sec & talk about… you guessed it, potty-time! Did you know that the standard toilet uses 15x more drinking water per day than a human does? Sure, low-flush toilets & dry urinals help reduce consumption, but what else can be done to conserve water? Considering that different types of waste require different amounts of water, designer Jose Genovés developed Natura, a toilet that adapts to male urination, female urination, & defecation, reducing water consumption by up to 60%!

For male urination, Natura provides a male urinal totally integrated into the toilet design. The urinal is a reclining element placed in the back part of the toilet and lowers toward the user with a simple “push to open” system. The urinal will dispose the urine with only a half liter of water, saving 30% of the water used by conventional toilets for the same purpose.

For female urination, the urine is disposed through an extra eco-siphon which requires only a half liter of water. As in any separating toilet, it is required to dispose of toilet paper without being flushed, otherwise no water is saved. Natura has a lower water level at the bottom of the bowl, keeping paper out of the users sight and preparing it for flush during the next cycle.

For defecation, Natura increases the water consumption from 4.5 liters to 6 to flush away any stored toilet paper. Even with the additional water consumption for this process, the toilet still reduces overall consumption by up to 60% with the reductions made during the urination process.
