HTC EVO 3D and Sensation 4G Temp-Root Available

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 02:07 PM PDT

Those developers over at XDA and other popular development communities are at it again working hard to bring us the things we need, things like temp-root for the HTC EVO 3D and the Sensation 4G. Earlier the group TeamWin found an exploit and were able to achieve root access. Now those nice guys are letting everyone else join in on the fun while they keep working.

Agrabren is the man behind much of the work that has been accomplished over the last few days to get temp-root and now he has posted a little user guide for those that would like to do the same. This is only temp-root so the device will not stay rooted for long, after a random amount of time or a reboot you will lose root. They are still working to get this all figured out but for now it is a work in progress.

They have a small root utility they are calling Fre3vo to help you out and you can download that by clicking here. This is not the easiest task and for those new to adb or to rooting devices you should probably wait for an easier and full root method before trying anything crazy. I know some out there are excited to try so I figured I’d share the news anyways.

Instructions:

Download Fre3vo

1. You must be able to push files via adb to your device.
2. You must know what a shell is.

then

1. Download the fre3vo binary
2. Push the binary via ‘adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp’
3. Change the permissions via ‘adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo’
4. Run the binary via ‘adb shell /data/local/tmp/fre3vo’

If all goes well, you’ll be told that adbd has been killed.

run ‘adb shell’ and you should have a ‘#’ prompt instead of ‘%’.

Again, this is only temporary root and if you reboot the device you will lose root access. They are also reporting it randomly losing root as well without a reboot so this is still very new and under developement. Try if you would like but take extreme caution and remember you are responsible for what you do, and not anyone else. Users at XDA are reporting apps like Titanium Backup are not working at first but with some tweaking they are able to run fine. When more details emerge or a better root tool we will update accordingly. Hopefully S-OFF is coming soon and enjoy your Holiday weekend everyone.
