Samsung Nexus S Available on Cincinnati Bell for $149

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 11:13 AM PDT

The Google experience device known as the Samsung Nexus S is now available on your favorite regional carrier, Cincinnati Bell. According to their website you can now get the Nexus S for the low low price of just $149 (with a new 2-year contract) or you can even get the Nexus S outright for only $349 but both prices require those fun mail in rebates we all love.

It’s worth mentioning that this is not the 4G version found in those T-Mobile stores and will only be a 3G device. The Nexus S is still no slouch though, packing that beautiful Super AMOLED display and a 1 Ghz processor. The Nexus S is a pure Google device running on Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. Check out our Nexus S Review for more details on the hardware.

The Nexus S has a huge developer community and I mean huge. Check out these benchmarks with it running a custom kernel and CM7. It is a fun device and being offered for the low price of just $149 from Cincinnati Bell is a great deal for those in the region. They are offering free-shipping and a web only special where they are waiving activation fee’s so head over to CB and buy that Nexus S.

DoCoMo SC-02C Hands-On [Galaxy S II with an Antenna!]

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 11:04 AM PDT

Well wouldn’t you know it, our man in Japan mister Ewdison Then has for us a brief look at the DoCoMo (Japan) version of the most epic handset on the market: the Samsung Galaxy S II! This version of the device is called the DoCoMo SC-02C and it’s got several differences that make it unique to the country and the carrier. Can you see the first big difference? It’s the biggest antenna in the entire world, the entire world completely.

The gigantic antenna enhances and makes possible One Seg TV (aka 1seg.) While pulling out the antenna does help reception, it’s not always necessary to pull it out to watch. The battery, as you can imagine, does not hold up especially well if you’re watching 1seg TV, lasting right around 4 hours at a time, but Ewdi lets us know that it’s awesome nonetheless! Direct TV to your handset – seem like something you’ll want to try out in the future? Maybe watch some History Channel, see what they did before mobile?

Next, there’s a new launcher. Instead of this device coming out with Samsung’s newest TouchWiz like it’s set to do here in the USA (someday, eventually,) this device comes with a launcher by the name of DoCoMo Palette UI. You can get a full-fledged peek at this launcher in the video below – wish we could run that here!

Beyond that, there a few more cosmetic differences between this and the Euro edition of the device, one being that the MicroSD slot is under the Sim Card slot, another being that the battery cover is different. The battery cover in his DoCoMo edition is thicker and is not compatible with the EU battery backplate. Furthermore, video calling is completely de-activated, in more ways than one.

DoCoMo, the same company that uses Darth Vader to sell the Galaxy S machines in the past – now with some sweet S2 action. Get into it!

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro Hits the FCC

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 10:50 AM PDT

A powerful phone in a small package is what Sony Ericsson is doing with the Xperia Mini Pro. This little phone has almost all the features you’d want in a quality smartphone yet it is small and even has a QWERTY keyboard. It has a 2.8″ screen, a front facing camera and even a 1 Ghz CPU yet the entire phone is still tiny. It just hit the FCC so it shouldn’t be long now.

For more info on this little beast check out our Xperia Mini and Mini Pro hands-on post. Like many Sony phones the radios suggest it will be for the European markets. This little phone is still expected to hit the market sometime in Q3 and it seems to be on track with this latest FCC filing.

Sony Ericsson has been pushing a few devices through the FCC lately and for the entire world to see, just like the Xperia Ray. With low numbers in the mobile department Sony looks to be trying to shake things up and get some handsets selling or at least some hype. I still want that beautifully thin Xperia Arc but I’m not ready to pay the price tag. Stay tuned for more information on the Xperia Mini Pro and feel free to check out our hands-on video below.

Dropbox Gets An Update, Adds Thumbnails and Folder Deletion

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 10:23 AM PDT

I’m going to start by saying if you haven’t used Dropbox you should probably go and download it like right now, Talk about convenient. Dropbox lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos everywhere you go. My favorite is I use it as a APK manager and I have all my apps right at my fingertips everywhere I go, among other things of course. They just updated on the market and added some needed features.

You install Dropbox on all your computers and Android phones and you have access to everything you put in your Dropbox “cloud” anywhere you go. Right on your phone, or from your girlfriends parents house (or in-laws) right on the computer. Basically you can access any file you need from wherever. It is one of those tools available in the 21st digital century that you might as well use because you can.

Today they added some new features that I’m excited to finally have. Things like thumbnails in the file browser, folder deletion and tons of security improvements for those that use it for business documents. I use dropbox daily and if you are still carrying around that 16GB “thumb drive” you should should probably head to dropbox.com and sign up. Head over to the market for the Android app.

MIUI ROM Getting UI Enhancements, Real MIUI Phone Gets Pictured

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 09:58 AM PDT

Are you guys ready for some delicious looking user interface and lockscreens for your Android? Because the team over at MIUI have released some pictured and screens of their next UI changes and they sure look good. What you are seeing below will land some time extremely soon and is the newest addition to their already popular UI. As always things are polished and run stable as can be over in MIUI town so have no fear.

Looks good right? MIUI ROM’s have been hacked up and pieced apart by tons of developers because so many people love their clock widget, or the beautiful music widget and more, and things look to be only getting better. You can get a custom MIUI clock widget from this thread just to name one.

Widgets… Everyone loves widgets! Check out what is coming soon from MIUI regarding widgets.

Now you may be wondering and thinking to yourself, I just wish MIUI would release a phone with that custom UI out of the box. Guess what? You just might be in luck because they announced exactly that earlier this week. With the help of Xiaomi they plan to release the Xiaomi M1 and it will be packing a dual-core Qualcomm processor at 1.2 Ghz and tons of amazing specs that most will drool over. We covered this story a few days ago and now it appears the real M1 phone is being pictured on the MIUI site, the original one was clearly a fake and looked too much like an iPhone. Here is the real M1 below.

From what I am seeing MIUI has no plans of slowing down anytime soon and are only getting bigger. Hopefully that phone manages to find its way past China and over here in the U.S. but that might be asking too much. We will see. Would you guys import a custom phone like this and pay a little extra to not have to worry about bootloaders and such?

Zinio lands for all Android devices

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 08:02 AM PDT

A few weeks ago, we mentioned that NVIDIA had optimized the Zinio reader for Honeycomb tablets. If you are an Android smartphone user that wants the Zinio reader as well the good news is that the app is now available for any Android device on Android 2.2 or higher. The app allows the user to browse full color magazines complete with ads and all the content from the printed versions.

Using the app, you can purchase single digital issues or buy subscriptions to the titles you like. You can also read the mags in text only mode if you are on a slow connection. To celebrate the official launch of the Zinio app on Android, Zinio is giving access to full issues from 12 different magazines. The mags include BlackBook, Bike, ESPN The Magazine, House Beautiful and more.

I have used Zinio before on iOS devices and the app is really nice. The publications look just like a print magazine, only when your battery runs down on your smartphone or tablet your reading is over. If you are on T-Mobile, you can get five more free titles to check out. I still prefer my mags in print, but many folks like digital.

Nosh helps you pick the yummy stuff when you are out to eat

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:46 AM PDT

If you are the sort that likes to eat out, but you want an idea what is best on the menu at an unfamiliar place Nosh is for you. This app is offered on Android and iOS platforms and comes by way of Firespotter. Firespotter was started by Craig Walker, the same geek that came up with Grand Central. Walker sold to Google and the service became Google Voice.

The app is basically a recommendation service that lets you check restaurants that are in the database and then see what friends and others that have been there are and if they liked it or not. The app has the ability to find friends via Twitter and Facebook. The database of restaurants is being built up right now.

Once the database is packed with places to eat, Nosh would be a great app for those traveling and wanting something particularly good to eat. If you hate to order from a menu, wait for the food to get done, and then realize you don’t like the food give Nosh a shot.

LG unveils new Android Optimus Pro LG-C660 and Optimus Net LG-P690

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 04:31 AM PDT

LG has announced a pair of new Android smartphones today with the unveiling of the new Optimus Pro and Optimus Net devices. The Pro is model number LG-C660 and the new Net is LG-P690. Both of the smartphones are running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The Optimus Pro is notable for having both a QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen.

It has a 2.8-inch screen with a Blackberry-style QWERTY keyboard underneath the screen. It has hotkeys that link the user directly to email and scheduler functions. It will come in white, titan and black colors. I have no idea what color titan actually is. The LG Optimus Net is more focused on social networking than the Pro. The Optimus Net has LG Social+ to put all the social networking portals into pone home page widget for easy access.

The device lets users change back and forth between Facebook and Twitter as needed. The widget also allows for integrated photo sharing and more. The device has a 3.2-inch 320 x 480 display with clearer images and can share with DLNA-friendly devices. Some of the specs on the smartphone will vary depending on market with some of the European phones offering NFC. In the US the phone will include a QWERTY keyboard and in Brazil, China, and the CIS regions it will be dual SIM compatible. Both of the smartphones have 800Mhz CPUs and 1500mAh batteries. Pricing is unknown and both will launch this summer.

Dude builds his own RC Android mascot out of a trash can

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 03:27 AM PDT

I love geeky DIY projects and when they are robotic in nature I like them even more. This one is particularly cool because it’s both a robot and a RC device and it happens to look like our pal the green Android mascot. The robot started out as a small trashcan that the builder painted green. You can see some photos of the build process in the gallery below and hit the source for a few more shots.

It looks like getting the head ready was the hardest part. He had to glue the flip-style opening section of the trashcan onto the lid and then caulk it up and sand it smooth. Inside the robot is all the gear that makes the RC controls work. The arms can move around and I am pretty sure those are Icee lids on the back of the robots arms.

The glowing eyes are made from 10mm green LED bulbs. The robot is rechargeable using a USB port and later versions have a rusty effect painted on the bots body. The bot even has its own little LCD screen on the bottom to deliver messages. The design uses Arduino tech in the build. Check out the videos to see the Android RC bot in action.

HTC Status Hands-On and Unboxing

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 05:27 PM PDT

It’s Facebook time again! We’ve got our hands on the HTC Status, aka the HTC ChaCha, aka one of two Facebook phones as released on AT&T for the greater good of Facebook fun in the USA. This device is one announced with a slew of ultra-fantastic HTC devices back at Mobile World Congress 2011, this again one of several that were not allowed to be touched at the time. We’ve got mega hands-on action coming at you now though, all if it personal and in-tune! The following is the initial look at this device, simple and smooth, then it’s time for you to ask all the questions and we’ll let loose – ANSWERS GALORE!

This device is one that’s not going to win any giant screen contests, sure not going to win the processor war, beat any more than a few devices in benchmark contests, and it’s not the fastest gun in the west (or the East, for that matter,) but guess what: it’s beautiful. It feels absolutely lovely sitting in your hand, and the smoothness of the plastic, the curves, and the well-crafted metal will make you say : “oh my goodness, this was a good decision that I made. I think I’ll buy myself an ice cream.” That said, you probably won’t be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on this device, but you wont want it anyway!

This is certainly one unique device. You’ll not truly be able to compare it with any other phone of its caliber, be it BlackBerry, odd Android, or scientific calculator. Think about THAT one, wont you? Now here comes a device that’s like a hockey puck chopped in half and formed with an official HTC “lip” on the bottom. Well played, all around in the cuteness of the form AND in the feel of the materials. Then we’ve got the display, that magical, fantastic display. We’ll talk a bit more about it when we get to the actual full review, but lets just say now: it’s bright, it’s sharp, and it’s nice to behold.

Then there’s the keyboard – a bunch of chicklets sitting in a tray, just begging to get tapped to status goodness. This is, as our good pal Chris Davies said when he looked at the device, one of the nicer QWERTY keyboards on a handset in recent memory, and for that this smartphone gets big props. Will this board be enough to alleviate the fact that the display is smaller than some lower-range devices on a good day? We shall see.

For now though, courage, and awaiting the true Facebook style – this is it!

Android Community Daily News Round-Up

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 04:29 PM PDT

Today has been a busy one in the world of Android but I know you don’t all have time to look through all the posts and forums so this is a little round-up just for you. I’ll mention a few articles and link to them for your convenience. Lets start with SwiftKey X as it just launched on the market today and is available for both phones and tablets (not just Honeycomb either). They are offering both versions for a discount and only $1.99 til Saturday so hurry and get it while its hot (and cheap).

While I’m mentioning things just launching today, Spotify also was released to the public this morning and is currently in beta here in the U.S.. Amazon is back in the tablet news and sources are now claiming Foxconn will build Amazon’s 10″ Android Tablet. Foxconn as you know is the premiere builder for the iPad so this could be good news. Speaking of tablets ViewSonic has the VB730 they plan to sell for $229 if you need a cheap 7″ tablet.

Virgin Mobile plans to throttle data starting in October, while the Google + Android app received an update today so now I can ignore circles I don’t want to talk to. The Motorola Droid 3 went on sale today in-store so head over and get one, We already did and you can watch our Droid 3 unboxing by clicking here. Oh and while we are mentioning DROIDS the original Moto Droid has a new Android 2.3.4 ROM as well as tons of kernels available.

Am I going to fast for anyone? Because that is the point!

The Motorola Atrix bootloader is now unlocked for the entire world to enjoy, and lets talk about leaks, yes leaks. The Samsung Admire with Android 2.3 was leaked for MetroPCS, we saw the LG Bryce (aka Revolution) packing 4G and also headed to MetroPCS today.

Google announced their Q2 Earnings and lets just say they have WAY too much money and I’d love like 1% of it — that is still like 10 billion dollars (not really but close). While Google was bragging they also let us all know the Market now has over 250,000 applications for download — a number they’ve been aiming for since Apple hit it last year. Don’t worry that’s not all as Google loves the news, Android is now activating over 550,000 phones every single day. That explains why they are making so much darn money.

Lets end this on a short note. Motorola is giving away 10,000 Spotify invites so you’ll probably want to click here. Canada will be getting the Droid 3 later this summer. Last but not least and speaking of Spotify, I’ve done a full Spotify Premium App Review that you don’t want to miss. More news will keep flowing today but that is all that really mattered to me today, so enjoy!

Oh yea, Qualcomm released a new browser benchmark app for mobile phones. It’s worth a look or two but it takes forever to finish a single test so you better have a few minutes to spare.

Have a nice night!

Motorola Droid 3 Headed to Canada as Motorola XT860 4G

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 03:43 PM PDT

The Motorola Droid 3 is finally available in stores starting today. The MOTODEV site also announced today that it will also be headed to Canada, known as the XT860 4G. Don’t let the 4G term in there make you all that angry, it wont be the same 4G LTE as many Verizon phones but it will have 4G HSPA+ while the Verizon Droid 3 only has 3G, but that is another story altogether.

We aren’t sure why Motorola has removed the Milestone name we have previously known, or if XT860 is just an internal name. We do know that it will feature the same specs with that TI OMAP 4 dual-core processor, 4″ qHD 540×960 res display and that gnarly 5 row QWERTY keyboard.

For more details you can read all our info in the Droid 3 Portal. We also got the Verizon Droid 3 in today and have done a hands-on and unbox for you all to enjoy. More details have yet to emerge but it will run with Android 2.3 and be headed to Bell Canada sometime this summer and possibly others.

Android Market Now Offers over 250,000 Apps

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 02:56 PM PDT

We are getting tons of news rolling in over this Google Q2 earning report they posted this morning. Tips keep coming in as everyone reads over the fact sheet and breaks down the huge numbers posted. Things are really looking up for Google, with over 550,000 activations daily to huge revenue profits they are happy campers so far in 2011. It appears the Android Market has also seen huge growth and they are revealing new numbers for that too.

Just 48 hours ago Google unleashed the new Market to the world, and today they are talking numbers again. Susan Wojcicki, Senior VP of Advertising, today announced in the second-quarter earnings call that the Android Market now has more than 250,000 applications, with more than 6 billion downloads.

This is another huge number as they have now passed a quarter of a million applications (but still only have 12 for Honeycomb). Just to give you an idea on the market growth, a few Google employees tweeted back in October 2010 that the market had passed 100,000 applications. So in less than a year those numbers too have more than doubled just like the amount of activations has.

In case you don’t recognize the market shown in the picture above — that is the new Android Market and you can download it here. We also did a Market Hands-On and Review of the newest version and you should read that too if you have any questions.

Android Now Seeing 550,000 Activations Daily says Larry Page

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 02:23 PM PDT

Fresh off the Google Q2 2011 Earnings call we just recently posted, Larry Page has shared a few details about what we all here at Android Community call the Android Army. Larry mentioned that Android is now seeing huge numbers and is getting around 550,000 activations daily — daily!

Just a few weeks ago Andy Rubin tweeted they were seeing around 500k daily, so in just 1 short month they are seeing a stable and fast increase. That was only 16 days ago and now they are already passing 550,000, all I can say is wow. That is like 3.8 million phones every week being activated — That is a lot of phones.

To put all of this into a bit more perspective for you, back in Q1 2011 that number was around 350,000 then at Google I/O in May they posted on the big screen they were activating over 400,000 a day. If you really want me to dig deep in Q1 2010 just over a year ago these numbers were said to be 160,000 activations every single day. So in 1 short year they have almost tripled. By Q3 these numbers could be up in the 650k range. The news is still coming in as I read over this huge Q2 earning report so stay tuned.

Google Announces Q2 Revenue up 32% Over Last Year

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 02:09 PM PDT

I know you guys don’t want to hear it or even see it, but I know some care to read about the outrageously huge amounts of money Google makes. They have just released the second quarter 2011 financial results and they are pretty impressive to say the least. Guess what — to no ones surprise they are up a whopping 32% from this time last year. I expected these sorts of numbers so I wont say this comes as a shocker, because it doesn’t.

Reports suggest revenues of $9.03 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, an increase of 32% compared to the second quarter of 2010. I pretty large increase over the $6.82 billion earned for the second three months of 2010. GAAP net income was $2.51 billion, up from $1.84 billion in Q2 2010 and the numbers are increasing this way basically across the board. Things are good over at Googleville.

Google-owned sites generated huge revenues of $6.23 billion, or 69% of total revenues, in the second quarter of 2011. This represents a 39% increase over second quarter 2010 revenues of $4.50 billion.

Showing that Google-owned sites accumulate around 70% of the total revenues, I guess this is why they want everyone clicking on ads, and hitting that +1 button for Google+ these days. I wont get down to all the details because you can check out the earning via the source link below if you want to be jealous. They do mention that their Cash and cash equivalents adds up to over $39 billion, yes I said billion. Google has also been pretty busy and hired a few more employees this last few months too, number of employees rose to 28,768 as of June 30, 2011, up from 26,316 as of March 31, 2011, More details below.

LG Bryce aka MS910 Clears the FCC, Headed to MetroPCS with 4G LTE

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 01:50 PM PDT

MetroPCS looks to be stepping up in the world of Android and we have heard a lot of news regarding them in the past few days, call it a revolution. Just a few days ago we first got wind of a LG Revolution looking phone called the LG Bryce and according to our sources it has just passed the FCC with 4G LTE and all on board.

Looking just like its brother the LG Revolution the LG Bryce is packing all the same features, as well as that blazing fast 4G LTE. It cuts down a few things like the internal storage from 16GB to only 4GB but you can still throw a 32GB MicroSD card if you need more space. Other than that the specs are about the same.

Users on MetroPCS will get the same 4.3″ display, 1 Ghz CPU, 5MP camera as well as HDMI-out and everything else the Revolution we linked to above has. This will be a great offering over on MetroPCS and I’m sure a few of you are excited for its release. We are hearing an October release date but hopefully they get it to market sooner than that. It will however come with Android 2.3.4 updated from the 2.2 on the Revolution.

Motorola Droid 3 in Verizon Stores Today

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 01:39 PM PDT

Just a courtesy reminder for all you big red users the Motorola Droid 3 is up for sale officially starting today July 14th and available in-store for your immediate pickup. If you’ve been waiting for a beastly dual-core device with a sweet keyboard this is the phone for you. Unless you were part of the lucky few that received the Droid 3 early.

We just received the Droid 3 in our labs and did a quick Droid 3 Hands-on and unboxing you wont want to miss thanks to our man Chris Burns, he is a machine and reviewed the MyTouch 4G Slide yesterday if you want to compare the two. The Droid 3 features that new OMAP 4 dual-core chip rather than the Qualcomm in the myTouch 4G Slide, and it isn’t a Tegra 2 either so we are excited to see the full power this phone offers.

For all things Droid 3 we also covered the accessories and wireless charging, posting a full Droid 3 system dump as well as a few other things. Enough talking for now because I bet you are ready to buy the Droid 3, and if you are feel free to head over to the Verizon Wireless Store. Let us know if you pick one up and what you think in the comment section below.

Motorola Droid gets Gingerbread 2.3.4 Update

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 01:34 PM PDT

The Motorola Droid, hardly needs any introduction, and while it was the very first Android 2.0 device, it never got official support for Gingerbread. Developer Peter Alfonso has been working to continue bringing stock ROMs and improved kernels to the OG Droid. Yesterday he released his latest ROM, GPA16, brings 2.3.4, Google Talk with Video and all.

The GPA16 ROM is meant to emmulate what would have been an official update from Motorola. It features a stock Gingerbread UI and look, with several “under the hood enhancements,” As Alfonso puts it. These include a custom Kernel of his design, a reboot option and 180 degree screen rotation.

If you’ll excuse my harping on the topic a second post in a row, this great work by Peter is a direct result of the Droid’s unlocked bootloader. There is already a Droid 3 out, but the original hasn’t even been out a full two years yet (November 6th will be its 2nd birthday). This means people who bought the original droid on contract aren’t even eligible for an upgrade yet. With a lack of official updates, not to mention the delay when they do come, from manufacturers developer work is the only hope many phones have to stay relevant.

I know this isn’t a huge concern for manufacturers, if people upgrade that much sooner, more money for them, but for many, getting a new phone off contract isn’t an option, and these sorts of updates can be vital in their phone lasting them through their contract. Its practically unpaid work if you just let the devs do their thing Moto! I’ll stop my rant now, but if you were wondering why you should care about unlocked bootloaders, here you go.
