HTC Puccini 10″ Tablet Hits the FCC, Packing AT&T 4G LTE

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 11:20 AM PDT

We have been waiting for a 10″ Android Honeycomb tablet made by HTC for a long time now, or I have at least. The long rumored HTC Puccini just hit the FCC to get everyone excited. We first heard reports on this tablet back in May, then it was leaked a few weeks later. This latest news is a good sign that is for sure.

Last we heard it was going to start getting mass production in June so for it to be now hitting the FCC lines up quite nicely with previous reports. The report suggests this tablet will come with AT&T 3G support, but also also supports the carrier's brand new LTE network on both the 700 and 1700MHz bands. AT&T’s 4G LTE network is still a work in progress so this could explain the possibly delays or why we haven’t heard much regarding the Puccini until now.

The HTC Puccini will indeed have a name change come release (I hope so at least) and if its anything like the smaller HTC Flyer the build quality will be great. Most likely it will feature the same specs we have been seeing for Honeycomb tablets such as a 1280×800 screen resolution. It is believed this will be rocking the Qualcomm dual-core 1.5 Ghz chip to speed things along and should be running Android 3.1 Honeycomb out of the box, or hopefully Android 3.2 that was just released.

I can’t wait to hear and see more on this tablet as I’ve been waiting to see what HTC would do with the 10″ form factor, hopefully some pictures and videos of this leak soon because that would be awesome. Stay tuned for more information because it should be coming now that its hit the FCC.

Samsung Galaxy S II CyanogenMod 7 Nightly Builds Coming Soon

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 10:55 AM PDT

Samsung users have been receiving a lot of love lately in the form of CyanogenMod. Recently the Fascinate started getting its own CM7 nightly builds as well as a few other Samsung phones and now it looks like team CM will be adding the top dog, the Galaxy S II to the list.

Back in June Samsung made a smart move and sent 4 Galaxy S II phones to some lucky developers of CyanogenMod and it is now paying off because the SGSII is next in line for nightly builds and I’m sure that makes plenty of users happy. Here is the news from a recent post by CM developer Atin M mentioning a few details and remember guys, no bug reports on nightly builds.

Another developer of CyanogenMod was nice enough to throw together a little video showing just how amazingly fast and smooth everything is running on the Galaxy S II. Make sure you check that out below so you know what you are getting into. It sure looks fast and stable, but being in beginning stages they are still working out all the issues.

With additional features like native screenshots in Cyanogenmod as well as all the other features and enhancements they provide, things are looking better than ever for team Cyan. Now I’m just waiting for my Sensation 4G to get unlocked so I can get CM7 on this beast too.

Motorola Triumph Selling Early at Best Buy

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 10:11 AM PDT

Remember the Motorola Triumph headed for Virgin Mobile in a few days? We had it over for a hands-on and unboxing just this week and it will be available from Virgin Mobile on July 20th. Well some reports of this off-contract 4.1″ Vanilla Android 2.2 phone is actually selling early over at big blue — yea that would be Best Buy.

The last thing we heard from Best Buy regarding this phone was they were going to start taking pre-orders back near the end of June. With multiple reports coming out of Reddit today saying they have already bought the phone and been using it all day.

Again the Triumph is a 4.1″ display phone with vanilla Android 2.2 (so no Moto Blur) packing a 1 Ghz processor. All able to be used for pay as you go and bought off contract for only $300. It might not be a beastly dual-core but it sure is a heck of a deal anyways. Reports are saying that some buyers were able to activate and others were not but the thread is ongoing. Keep trying to activate as they are slowly coming online and will officially be released by Virgin Mobile come Wednesday.

IntelliVocab App for SAT, GRE, and GMAT Now for Android!

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 09:31 AM PDT

All you students out there, you studiers, you hard workers, and you owners of Android devices – today is your day. A batch of industrious students at MIT made an app a while ago that, sadly enough, was only available for iOS until now. This app is made to help students pass various exams such as the SAT, the GRE, and the GMAT through a series of questions in a simple to use interface on your mobile device. This app is now, you guessed it, available on Android and it’s totally free! Now you’ve got NOT EXCUSE why you can’t study for such terrifying tests of your maddeningly awesome intelligence.

This app uses vocabulary words and centers around the way they’re written and the way they sound – something I’m SURE you love to think about on a daily basis outside of studying for a test such as this. This app uses machine learning algorithms to determine your level, be it Expert or Commitment, and helps build stamina by modeling each practice session based on this level. Your training will be based on both self-study as well as learning through interaction – tap away!

Of course there’s a full set of features here, including a regular progress report showing how well you’re doing, how many questions you’ve answered correctly, and if you’re going to FAIL or not – the final result of course still depending on you, the test taker. This app has been lauded as a fantastic way to get to know yourself as you’ll appear on the tests you’re about to take and has been the app of the day on several sites as it appeared in its iOS form.

We’ve taken a look at the app briefly, and it looks like it’s certainly what it says it is, made with extremely simple graphics and a user interface straight out of a science professor’s handbook – great to keep on point! Go grab it right now from the Android Market] and tell em we told ya!

Thanks for the tip, Lana!

Samsung Galaxy Q phone/tablet hybrid details leak ahead of IFA

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 05:32 AM PDT

The big IFA show in Berlin will be here before you know it. The show kicks off in Berlin the first week of September and SlashGear will be on hand at the show doing our thing. Ahead of the show, some leaked details claim Samsung will be showing off a new device that skirts the gap between a traditional smartphone and a tablet. The leaked details are rather vague and confusing and come from Yahoo Korea.

The catch with the leak is that the Korean translation is sketchy and there is no official confirmation from Samsung on the device. What we can gather from the details of the leak is that the device will be called the Galaxy Q phone. It will pack in a 5.3-inch screen apparently of the Super AMOLED Plus variety from Samsung Mobile display. The 5.3-inch screen will make the Q the largest smartphone (assuming it has voice capability) Samsung has offered. The Infuse 4G (pictured) with its 4.5-inch screen is currently the largest smartphone Samsung has.

Samsung is said to be placing the Galaxy Q as a stepping stone between the smartphone and a tablet. The larger screen will make it easier for people that use their smartphone for navigation, gaming, and viewing video easier for sure. We aren't convinced in the face of minimal details that the Q has true voice capability at this point. We will learn more at IFA in a few weeks and hopefully will know all about the Galaxy Q then.

Archos G9 tablet gets price and ship date

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 04:42 AM PDT

Back in late June, we spent a bit of time with the Archos G9 tablet. At the time, we knew all there was to know about the Archos G9 and its sibling with a vague launch date of “this fall” and a price pegged at $279. We know for instance that the G9 will run Android 3.1 and will be offered with up to 250GB of storage. The tablets also both have the option of a 3G USB dongle to get mobile broadband on the go.

The tablet uses a dual-core TI OMAP 4 processor that we found to be slow compared to the Tegra 2. That TI processor under the Archos G9′s hood runs at 1.5GHz. The devices we played with were prototypes so we are hoping the performance is better in the final versions. At the time, the price was pegged to start at $279 with the base 8GB of storage. The tablet has gone up now that it has a September launch date. The G9 80 with the 8-inch screen will start at $299.99.

The G9 101 with the 10-inch screen will start at $369.99. There is no word on what the version with 250GB of storage will sell for. With the higher prices and no corresponding bump in features, I wonder if the G9 tablets will be as appealing to consumers on the hunt for a new tablet. What do you think? Are these tablets worth the bump in price?

Clove pins a price and launch date for UK to ZTE Skate Android smartphone

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:47 AM PDT

If you are an Android fan in the UK, hoping to get a smartphone with decent specs at a good price the ZTE Skate might be the smartphone for you. The phone is sized similarly to the HTC Desire HD, but will be much cheaper than that HTC offering. The Skate uses Android 2.3 and has a giant 4.3-inch touchscreen. According to one UK retailer the Skate will be coming soon and will sell for a great price.

Clove reports that the ship date for the Skate is September 19 and the phone is up for pre-order at £250. That makes the Skate a good £200 cheaper than some of its rivals. The Skate will hit Orange on the pay as you go plan where it is though the price might be even lower than the £250. ZTE hasn't confirmed that Clove has the price correctly so this side of a major price error on the Clove website the Skate looks to be one of the better bangs for your Android bucks out there.

The smartphone has a 800MHz processor, a microSD card supporting up to 32GB cards, and 256MB of RAM. It also has 512MB of ROM and a scant 150MB of internal storage. The native resolution of that big 4.3-inch screen is 800 x 400 and the device operates on GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and 3G/HSPA 900/1200 networks. The device has Bluetooth and WiFi as well.

BBC News to survey mobile broadband speeds around Britain

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:51 AM PDT

Anyone that has a mobile phone knows that the speeds and coverage that the carrier promises in their marketing and the reality of the network are rarely the same. Consumers on the UK will soon have a better idea of what carrier has the best coverage and data speeds across the country and what those speeds actually are. BBC is working on a major survey that will look into phone coverage in the UK.

The survey will happen over the next month and will try to chart the availability of 3G and 2G coverage around the country. The goal is to provide an independent coverage map it to along with what the carriers offer. The survey will be made using Android handsets and a network analysis app developed by Epitiro. After the testing is complete, BBC will offer the results in the form of a clickable map.

This survey will provide the details that people need to choose a carrier in the UK. Ofcom says there are about 12 million smartphones in the UK today. The regulator estimates that 91% of the UK has 2G coverage and 76% has 3G coverage. The survey will help put more accurate numbers on coverage.

Toshiba Thrive users reporting issues with waking tablets up

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:20 AM PDT

Earlier this month the Toshiba Thrive tablet landed for fans of the Honeycomb device to grab up at Newegg, Best Buy and several other retailers. Things seemed fine with the tablet at the start and now there is a bunch of users having a bothersome issue with the tablet. Over on the Toshiba Forums there are multiple pages of users reporting that the tablet won’t wake from sleep mode and that a reboot is required.

The first user to report the problem says that when the tablet is in standby mode and the button is pushed to wake the tablet nothing happens. The tablet requires a reboot to get it to come on. A fix having to do with a battery swap is reported by one user to bring the tablet out of sleep mode, but the same user reports that he can't login after that and still has to reboot. Several other users have also reported that the battery removal work around doesn’t fix the issue.

Another user also reports that factory reset doesn’t fix the issue either. The issue seems to be happening on all versions of the Thrive. Toshiba is gathering information from the users that are having the issue and says that it is working on the problem. Are any of you using the Thrive having this same issue?

AT&T HTC Status on sale for $50

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 12:55 AM PDT

The HTC Status has officially gone on sale at AT&T, the carrier’s branded version of the HTC ChaCha. The QWERTY-toting Facebook phone has a compact touchscreen, runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a custom version of HTC Sense on top, and has a dedicated Facebook button for sharing photos and other updates to the wildly-popular social network.

In addition, there’s a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and a flash, a front-facing webcam for video calls, and 3G connectivity. Elsewhere there’s WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth and GPS, together with a microSD card slot that comes with a 2GB card pre-loaded (but which can support up to 32GB).

AT&T is asking $50 for the Status, which makes it one of the cheaper Android devices around; obviously you’ll also need a new, two-year agreement with mandatory data plan. More details on the Status in our hands-on and unboxing; we’ll have a full review very soon!

It’s a great time to be a fan of Android Community! We’ve got a gigantic tablet giveaway going on here by the name of Tabletpalooza, and the winners of the first three of five are listed right here in this post! This is a contest of epic proportions, where you the user have the chance to win a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor toting Android tablet, and we’ve got several! It’s been two weeks, and since we’re doing this contest with SlashGear, we’ve got several tablets ready to be assigned to winners already! Could it be you? Check below!

Each of these entries were made either on Facebook or Google+, where the entering party had to have had both in place to have earned a chance to be pulled for the contest. If you made a post on Facebook and submitted your name and email to get an invite to Google+, you’re in the contest as well, no worries! We picked all winners at random, made sure they were attached to the week and site they entered for, then went back and found our favorite comment (of the two they made) and pasted them here.

NOTE all ye contestants listed below, if you do not respond to us at Giveaway @ slashgear.com within 24 hours, your prize will be recycled into a week later on in the contest. If we’re already in contact about this winning entry and we’ve exchanged information, you’re good to go! Now without further ado, the winners!

First is Hampton Lepig (whose name, actually Hampton, has been veiled by us upon his request,) and a fine fellow he is! He’s the proud winner of a brand spanking new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, a tablet of some note! Check out what he submitted as his Facebook entry right here, and wish him luck in his tabbing adventures!

Next there’s Paul Hammond, a fellow who may or may not be a weapon nut who also has an Android fetish, and certainly enjoys the occasional hot sauce and Guns N Roses party. This wild and wacky entrant won himself a lovely Asus Eee Pad Transformer and will be sitting pretty soon!

Finally there’s Alex Hernandez, a user who entered for the newest contest on SlashGear, that being for the G-Slate. Alex will be using the tablet to find a brand new pair of pants, ordering them from the internet on this 3D tablet with all sorts of red and blue visions for the future. Good times!

Remember now, this is only a roundup of the winners we’ve got already. We still have a couple of tablets to give away due to a complication with our first contest, that being for the Acer Iconia Tab A500. Because of this, the tablet will be the final prize offered by SlashGear, while here on Android Community we’re giving away our first Galaxy Tab 10.1. What an awesome way to finish up such a fantastic giveaway! Get to entering and remember – one per site!
