| Motorola Droid X2 Gets a Custom ROM, Looks Nice in Black Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:36 AM PDT Today a custom ROM for the Droid X2 was made available. It’s still in beta but this is the first ROM for the phone. I say beta but from initial reports almost everything seems to be working great and it appears to be a pretty stable and well put together ROM. It has a pretty all black theme that looks nice without being overdone.
They’ve removed bloatware and added tons of performance enhancements to keep things moving along plenty fast for most users, as well as other improvements. I’m really liking the simple black UI enhancements too. This may not be CM7 but Droid X2 users should be plenty happy to give this a try. All the details are in the XDA thread. Download: MinX ROM Beta This is not for the light at heart or those that don’t know what they are doing. Getting custom ROM’s and root on Motorola devices is no easy task. You can root the phone using Gingerbreak. You can find bootstrap and clockwork recovery details here. From there you should know the rest of the way. As always use caution when doing anything like this, and my number one rule — always do a Nandroid. I always have a Nandroid so I can get back to where I started. For more details check out the full thread via the source at XDA. [via XDA Forums] ) |
| Lenovo IdeaPad K1 Tablet with Android Photos Leak Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:25 AM PDT It’s a morning full of wonder here in the Android world, where Lenovo has decided to release some mysterious but awesome images of tablets with Android, two of them, through their Picasa account, photos galore! What we can tell from the images we’re seeing is that there’s an IdeaPad K1 Tablet and a ThinkPad Tablet, the latter being for butanes and the former being, it appears, for entertainment. The IdeaPad K1 is rather rounded edges, several choices for casing colors, and a slew of docking and protection options in BRIGHT colors on top!
This device is the second of two tablets we’ve been treated to this morning by Lenovo, the first being the business oriented ThinkPad Tablet. This IdeaPad K1 shares several features with the ThinkPad including what appears to be either a special lockscreen or a whole new look at Honeycomb – the same image appearing on most of the press photos we’re seeing here. Beyond that we can clean that there’s certainly not an abundance of ports on this device, that it’s rather simple looking so that it might appeal to the masses, and that it’s pretty. We’ve of course seen what appear to essentially be this same tablet several months ago in a listing for the IdeaPad K1, the exact same photos in tow. Of course you might also recognize this tablet as resembling what’s known as the Lenovo LePad, a device that’s already on its second generation. This new version appears to have a keyboard dock, a rather fun looking fold-over cover flap, and a dock that’ll turn it into a desktop computer. Neato! Which tablet looks more appealing to you, this or the ThinkPad Tablet? Thanks for the tip Riccardo P! ) |
| Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet with Android Photos Leak Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:10 AM PDT Well would you look at that, Lenovo has given us all a treat through their Picasa albums in the form of a couple of Android tablets, one of them by the name of Lenovo IdeaPad K1 and the other by the name of ThinkPad Tablet. The IdeaPad K1 appears to be more of an entertainment device, what with its several color choices in the casing and smooth rounded features, while the ThinkPad Tablet appears to be made for exactly what the ThinkPad notebooks have always been about: business.
The ThinkPad Tablet appears to be a 10-inch tablet running Android 3.0 or 3.1 Honeycomb with a special Lenovo user interface over the top. There appears to four dedicated physical buttons along the bottom, with a proprietary connector, a miniUSB port, mini HDMI, and two cameras, one on back and one up front. There’s a door that more than likely has an SD card hidden behind it, and there’s one docking solution plus a pen with the classic red nib at the end of it. This is one of two tablets that will be release by Lenovo soon we’re thinking, and with such a simple look and a dedicated fan base already out there in the wild, this may be a winner right out of the box. And what about that user interface? Is it a fully adjusted look at Honeycomb, or is it just a single lockscreen situation? Looks pretty, either way. Stay tuned for the IdeaPad K1 leak pics! Meanwhile – this look like the Android tablet for you? Thanks for the tip Riccardo P! ) |
| Eric Schmidt Comments on the Apple Lawsuits Posted: 19 Jul 2011 10:10 AM PDT The big man at Google known as Eric Schmidt looks to be stepping in to share a few comments regarding the current lawsuits we have been reading about. Not only is HTC getting hit but Apple and their army of lawyers have been going after Samsung too. At a Google mobile conference in Tokyo, Schmidt was pretty confident it talking about not only Apple lawsuits but also the issue with Microsoft as of late.
While talking at the mobile conference Eric Schmidt basically boils it down to the success of Android stating that the competition is just jealous of their success. Here is what Schmidt had to say in his few choice words.
This not only goes for Apple but also Microsoft who have been banking $5 on every HTC phone sold. That isn’t all either, Microsoft is going after multiple Android OEMs for similar agreements that are making them more money than their own Windows Phone 7 currently is. This is exactly what Schmidt is talking about, Microsoft is going after the success of Android while they are still late for the smartphone party. Schmidt also went on to say that Google would support HTC if needed. When asked if they would offer support to HTC if they lose his response was, “We will make sure they don’t lose, then.” He declined to comment more on how or what they would do to support makers like HTC and other possible targets but at least it’s a bit of reassurance for everyone. Google backing and potentially providing aid to their partners is a great move and I guess this goes along nicely with the Google motto “Don’t Be Evil”. It is getting pretty hot in the patent and lawsuit areas of Android and things keep taking a turn for worse. HTC recently purchased S3 Graphics to have a wide portfolio of their own patents to help fend off the likes of Apple so it might get even more interesting. These things take lots of time but we will be following along for more details. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Disney offers Pooh Bear Android app Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:43 AM PDT
The app title is “What’s a Bear to Do” and it has different reading modes, puzzles, animated sequences for the stories, and matching games among other features. The game supports multiple languages including English and Spanish. This is one of the first Disney apps that has landed for Android, though they have been on iOS devices for a while. The app follows Pooh on his quest for more honey. It is aimed at early readers 3-7 years old and is on the Android market now. The app sells for $2.99 and should be a lot of fun for the kids out there. [via Orlando Setinel] ) |
| GameTanium subscription gaming service hits Android Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:32 AM PDT Of all the apps that you can get on the Android platform, games are the most popular and the most likely to be paid for. A company called Exent is bringing a new subscription mobile gaming service to the Android platform called GameTanium Mobile. The service will have a monthly fee of $4.99 for access. That monthly fee will give players access to every game they want that the service offers.
There are 75 games on the service at launch. Exent already powers mobile gaming services for Verizon, T-Mobile and Qwest. The GameTanium service will have editors that keep an ongoing list of games that are expected to be popular with the subscribers. By the end of the year, there will be more than 200 games on the service. The game publishers signed up to participate are big names too with PopCap, Ubisoft, and others. The game service will live or die by the quality of the games. If the games suck, the service will die. However, if the service offers good games the $4.99 monthly fee isn't that expensive. | Autodesk launches SketchBook Pro for Android tablets Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:16 AM PDT Back in December of 2010, I mentioned that Autodesk had launched the SketchBook drawing app for Android smartphones. The catch is that the smartphone screen is generally too small for any intense drawing sessions. SketchPad Pro has been on the iPad for a while now allowing artists to draw using the larger iPad screen.
Autodesk has now finally rolled out a tablet version of SketchBook Pro to Android tablet users too. The app is a brush set that allows you to draw on a digital canvas and use your fingers as well as a stylus to create all sorts of drawings. The app has more than 60 brush tools and the user can create up to six different layers as one file and can export the files to Photoshop. This is the first version of the app optimized for honeycomb tablets. The software caters to amateurs and established pros in the design industry as well. This sounds like a cool app for anyone that likes to draw and doodle on the road. The app is available now for $5 and works with Android 3.0 and up. [via Wired] ) |
| Motorola Droid 3 gets teardown treatment, has 3G chip from iPhone 4 inside Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:26 AM PDT If you have a hankering to see the new Droid 3 all nakey, iFixit has done its thing with the smartphone and gutted it for your perusal. We went hands on with the Droid 3 not long ago and if this is the Droid you are looking for, the teardown picas reveal some cool details on the phone. It looks like the phone is surprisingly easy to rip apart too with the screwdriver only coming out to remove the back case and a few other parts.
It appears that much of the heavy lifting was done with a plastic opening tool and a few other things. Motorola put a neat little hole in the mainboard to allow sound to transfer better from the speaker to the outside of the smartphone. The chip inside is the Qualcomm MDM6600 and the storage is SanDisk SDIN4C2 16GB NAND. The photo of the mainboard of the smartphone shows all the chips and sensors that the phone uses. It’s cool to see the works behind the keyboard surface when pried apart. The display has Gorilla Glass over the tip and is an Atmel MXT224E unit. The gang at iFixit gives the Droid 3 a repairability score of 6 out of ten thanks to no security screws and the battery not being soldered to anything among other things. [via SlashGear] ) |
| KDDI creates Android app that measures user’s brainwaves with a headset Posted: 19 Jul 2011 03:20 AM PDT KDDI R&D laboratories in Japan has created integration between an Android smartphone and neural science that uses a headband with sensors to monitor brainwaves. The idea is that the app will allow the user to measure their concentration during things like gaming and meditation. The headband has small sensors inside that detect brain neural activity.
A clip attaches to the ear to detect the users pulse. The headset you see in the photo here is combined with an Android phone. Three games in the app encourage the wearer to concentrate and play for 30 seconds. After that 30-second time frame the app creates a chart that graphs concentration and meditation. Concentration is a measurement of the focused state of the user and mediation is the relaxed state of the user. The app also offers a diagram to show what parts of the brain were used during the time span. The system is in the concept stage at this time, but the tech may eventually make its way to the consumer market. There is a similar system for the iPhone that measures brainwaves to control games within a special app on the market already in the US. [via Japantrends] ) |
| Samsung disowns Anymode Galaxy Tab Smart Case, gets product pulled Posted: 19 Jul 2011 01:25 AM PDT Samsung has had the Anymode Smart Case for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 pulled from the accessory retailer’s site, insisting that the product was not, in fact, granted “Designed for Samsung Mobile” certification. According to Samsung – which was roundly criticized after design similarities between the Anymode case and Apple’s Smart Covers for the iPad 2 were noted – Anymode did not go through the official process of having the accessory approved before listing it.
“As a general practice, Samsung Electronics reviews and approves all accessories produced by partners before they are given the “Designed for Samsung Mobile” mark” the company insists. “In this case, approval was not given to Anymode for the accessory to feature this official designation.” Apple’s own design inspiration for the Smart Covers has come under fire in previous months, over similarities between the official accessory and the InCase Magazine Jacket released for the first-gen iPad. Neither the Anymode nor the InCase versions can control the tablets’ standby feature, however, unlike Apple’s official Smart Cover. “We are working with Anymode to address this oversight and the product has already been removed from the Anymode sales website” Samsung concludes, pointing out that “the product has not been sold.” [via SlashGear] ) |
| Sony S1/S2 tablets teaser three released: Movies, Ereading, Gaming Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:30 AM PDT Sony’s teaser campaign for the S1 and S2 tablets continues, despite the slates having shown up in the wild on several occasions now. After parts one and two comes video three, sticking with the Rube Goldberg theme and now focusing on entertainment uses for the Android pair.
As well as audio and video, with the single-screen S1 shown playing back The Green Hornet as well as offering various music tracks, an ereader app is briefly demonstrated. The S2 is shown displaying two pages at once – doing a decent job of resembling a traditional book, in fact – and then there’s a brief glimpse of PlayStation gaming. “To be continued” the teaser concludes, which certainly implies we have at least one more segment to go until Sony hopefully decides to tell us something concrete. Still up in the air are the tablets’ official names, their prices and their release dates, though recent rumors have suggested that the S1 at least will hit pre-order in September. [via Twitter] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy R Dual-core Phone Headed to UK in the Coming Weeks Posted: 18 Jul 2011 09:06 PM PDT When you first look at the Samsung Galaxy R you would probably think it was the Galaxy S II just by looking at it, but then once you look a little closer you’d notice a few very small changes. This is the Samsung Galaxy R and it’s basically a Galaxy S 1.5 or even a 1.9 because it is as close to the SGSII as you can get, without actually being it.
While we are still waiting for the SGSII here in the U.S. other countries are already enjoying it and are about to get the next best thing, its little brother. We are getting left behind in terms of Samsung phones. Recent reports suggest carriers aren’t interested but I know all my friends and I are, so get with it T-Mobile and Verizon. Back to the Galaxy R this phone is very similar to its bigger brother with a few minor changes that should lower the cost. It features a 4.2″ SLCD display (.1″ smaller than the SGSII) a 1 Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU (big brother has a 1.2 Ghz Samsung Exynos) and the camera around back was lowered from an 8MP camera to a 5 MP 720p shooter. So basically the Galaxy R is still comparable if not better than almost all the other options available. Samsung neatly shaved a few small areas off to get a better price point, while staying extremely competitive. Pricing and official release date have yet to be announced but it should be released around the end of July, early August. It will be interesting to see where it is priced compared to the Galaxy S II and other similar offerings like the Sensation 4G. We should be hearing more if it does launch in July so keep yours eyes on Android Community. [via Cnet] ) |
| HTC Releases Source Code for Desire Z, Incredible S, and the Flyer Tablet Posted: 18 Jul 2011 05:57 PM PDT Lately HTC has been getting some more grief from the development and Facebook communities and another campaign was recently launched demanding they release the source code for many of their popular devices. The main ones being asked for in this online stampede over on Facebook were for newer devices like the EVO 3D or the Sensation and even the EVO 4G just to name a few but that didn’t happen. Instead HTC released the source code for a few other not as popular devices to at least show progress.
They have released a lot of things over at the HTC Developer Center, but source codes for the big devices are still hard to come by. The original EVO 4G is one of those still yet to be released. EVO 4G updates are listed, but not kernel source codes. Open GPL requirements say they need to release these but most OEM’s are very slow to actually do it. This doesn’t mean much for the average user, but for kernel and ROM builders this is exactly what they need. It’s like their TrueBlood, once they have it they are good to go. Having the kernel source code allows developers to enhance performance, build great overclocking kernels, ROMs and more. It can also help them port something like the HTC Flyer ROM over to other tablets like the G-Tablet or even a NOOKcolor. Most of our HTC bootloaders are still locked but at least HTC is starting to release more of the kernel source codes. Lets just hope they don’t take as long on their recent devices as they have on the EVO 4G because its devs are still waiting on HTC regarding that. For all the details and the downloads head over to the source link below. [via HTC Developer Center] ) |
| Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper, Watch for Rain Posted: 18 Jul 2011 05:42 PM PDT We all love our android Live Wallpapers right? It is just one of those features that adds that extra touch of personality to your smartphone. Last week we featured the Pixel Rain LWP and so many people liked it that I figured I’d find another one of my favorites for everyone. Today I present you with Thunderstorm LWP, made by one of the best wallpaper developers around.
Originally this was only for phones and I ran it for months on my old myTouch 4G and it truly is an awesome live wallpaper. Since honeycomb and the Xoom were released the developers have made some huge improvements to resolution, graphics and overall smoothness of most of their LWP’s on the market and this is still one of my favorites. It may not seem that cool but once you install it you’ll realize how cool it actually is, the occasional lightning bolts and pouring rain make it that much better.
This wallpaper is NOT a movie and it doesn’t just loop. You can change the lightning bolt frequency as well as color (for you DROID fans wanting red) as well as the light flashes and more. It truly has tons of options and it’s one of those wallpapers I show friends and family on my Xoom. You can even change the ambient light color then make the lightning black and it will feel like the world is ending. Check out the video below for a better idea of the different options available. After watching that video you know you want to download and show off this wallpaper. I know I did. It is available in the Android Market. They offer donate versions for those wanting to show your appreciation and help these developers continue to create amazing wallpapers. Here is the QR code to make things a bit easier. ) |
| Samsung Selling iPad Smart Cover Knockoff, Doesn’t Appear to be Afraid of Apple Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:55 PM PDT Samsung and Apple have been going at it as of late regarding patents and product copying. Apple outright claimed that Samsung copied them for devices like the Galaxy S line and even the Galaxy Tab. Apple is currently trying to sue Samsung over these issues. A few days later Samsung counter-sued and this entire thing was already starting to get out of control.
From the latest bit of news coming out I think it is safe to say either Samsung doesn’t care, or they aren’t all that afraid of Apple. It appears they are now blatantly copying the Smart Cover design that Apple uses on the iPad2 case. They now have a full line with the same design and all the fancy colors the Apple version comes in. Is this a sign of things to come, or is Samsung just playing tough.
A company named Anymode who is not only an official partner of Samsung, but also a lead supplier in Samsung accessories is who is technically behind the amazing and magical new case they are ingeniously calling the “Smart Case”. They are showing up all across Korea (Samsung’s Home Turf) and the new Smart Case is also in Samsung shops and stores country wide all across Korea as an official accessory. Sounds like they are playing hardball to me, it’s your move Apple! [via Anymode] ) |
| AT&T Free For A Year Sweepstakes! Sign Up Now Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:32 PM PDT Live free with AT&T is the slogan they are throwing around. Apparently AT&T would like to give 15 lucky subscribers a deal that is too good to pass up. They have just started their Live Free Sweepstakes and they will be paying your entire AT&T bill for an entire YEAR — I’m liking the sound of this already. All you must do is head over to the sign up page and fill her out and you are all set.
I haven’t seen much advertisement regarding this sweepstakes but it starts on July 26th, and from what I’m reading they will be giving out 15 grand prizes. That grand prize is they will pay your AT&T bills for an entire year. Sounds pretty awesome right? It looks like the limit is $300 a month so if you have a large family they will only be helping with the bills, not paying them completely. Each week they will choose a winner. They are also giving away 15 gift cards in the amount of $100 dollars for people that share this sweepstakes with more than 5 friends on Facebook and or Twitter. Make sure you look over the Official Rules so you don’t get anything wrong. I have T-Mobile and somehow I doubt I’d be able to talk them into paying my bills for a year, even though they are supposed to be buying T-Mobile here soon. But hey it’s worth a shot right? I’ll go ahead and enter anyways. [via AT&T] ) |
| HTC EVO 3D Bootloader will be Unlocked At Launch Says Rogers Canada Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:16 PM PDT Exciting news coming from Rogers Canada today. They have just said that the EVO 3D will be launching soon and it will in fact have an unlocked bootloader already. You will not have to wait for the HTC update we are all waiting for. HTC recently announced they will be working on unlocking the bootloader for the current HTC Sensation and the EVO 3D and more to follow. It looks like you Canadians wont have to wait for such an update.
I guess for us in the States we will have to just keep waiting for that update but it isn’t to far off so that is good news I guess. Our friends over at MobileSyrup heard the news on the Rogers EVO 3D and it is pretty interesting to say the least. Although after looking over it I see that a support rep said yes the bootloader will be unlocked, but I don’t see him mention “at launch” so this story might be a bit early but I figured you’d all want to hear either way. Support reps saying the bootloader will be unlocked might just be because they know the update is coming from HTC. Whether it will launch unlocked I’m still not fully sure but I’ll keep digging. For more information about Rogers 3D goods click here. Now that this story is starting to break most likely over the next day or so we should get some clarification from either Rogers or HTC or both so stay tuned as this story unfolds. | Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE Gets Micro SIM on Verizon Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:54 PM PDT We haven’t heard much about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE headed to Verizon lately other than when it went up for pre-order. You can also see the official press release if you’d like. We have just been tipped that the upcoming 4G LTE Tablet will be using a new Micro SIM card for the 4G LTE speeds from Verizon.
The 4G SIM cards currently used on the Thunderbolt, and Samsung Droid Charge are pretty large just like most SIM cards used by other carriers. They look to be using a similar sized SIM card to what is being used in the iPhone 4. This doesn’t really mean much other than you wont be able to swap them if you need. If I was a Thunderbolt user it would be nice to be able to throw my 4G LTE SIM into my new Galaxy Tab when I happen to leave the house, but that wont be happening.
Verizon should announce the 4G Micro SIM cards later this month but we still don’t have a release date for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE, just the pre-orders. This makes me wonder if future devices will use the Micro SIM cards as well. Hopefully when the DROID Bionic launches we will see what it uses for a SIM card. It may be the first Micro SIM with 4G LTE but we wont know until further details emerge. If they do start shipping all LTE devices with Micro SIM cards then we will be able to swap the cards, hopefully this is the case. Stay tuned! ) |
| Verizon Offering Back to School BOGO Sales on Droid 3 and X2, Amazon’s Deals Still Better Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:19 PM PDT Verizon must be feeling pretty generous today. We just reported that Amazon is offering up some tasty prices to anyone willing to sign on to one of Verizon’s new tiered data plans. Not to be outdone, Verizon is offering a buy-one-get-one deal on its two latest Droid phones, the Droid 3 and Droid X2.
Well leave it to marketing to ruin my summer. Its not even August, and the “back to school” sales are starting. While it may be sad for myself and students everywhere, for you it means some pretty good deals on phones. If you and a friend or family member are looking to upgrade, this summer the Droid 3 and Droid X2 are both available buy-one-get-one for an effective price of $99.98 each. Is it worth going through the trouble of getting two phones when Amazon has both phones for cheaper though? The short answer, no. Like Amazon’s deals on these phones, you will need a new contract to get the price, meaning you have to be leaving another carrier, or giving up your unlimited data. The difference between the two (aside from needing to buy two) is that the Amazon deals are $30 less for the Droid 3 and $40 less for the Droid X2. A deal’s a deal, but so is a better one. If you are looking for a new Verizon smartphone contract, hop on over to Amazon and check out the deals we reported here. ) |
| Verizon Wireless Upgrading 28 Locations to 4G LTE This Week Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:07 PM PDT Verizon 4G LTE is blazing fast in case anyone didn’t know and they are continuing the rollout and this week they will be adding an addition 28 locations to the ever growing list of 4G LTE cities. They are adding a few large cities that were since lacking behind and bringing them up to speed — literally. Verizon has stated the additions should start seeing full access starting Thursday if all goes well.
Reports are coming in saying that a few are already getting access to the 4G speeds so that is good news. With the Motorola Droid Bionic coming soon these new cities are getting 4G just in time to enjoy those speeds on their new dual-core Bionic. Verizon recently came out and said the 4G LTE network will not be compatible with or let AT&T users roam but that was to be expected. With more than 100 markets now having 4G LTE speeds Verizon is quickly approaching their goals for the 2011 rollout. Maybe soon we will see more of their upcoming video chat on 4G app. Hopefully adding new markets wont cause instability but then that is why they are pushing LTE out in stages. The Verizon press release was massive so I wont bore you with the little details. Basically the special part is that they are now up to speed in over 100 markets nationwide and they are adding more as fast as they can. Here is a list of the 28 markets that should see 4G LTE this week. ) |

Winnie the Pooh has been around for much longer than I have. I would bet we are all familiar with the little yellow bear and his pals. My kids are hearing about Pooh for the first time with the new flick in theaters now. To tie in with that flick Disney has now unveiled a new Pooh app for Android users. The app is an interactive story, not so much a game.
