| Samsung Galaxy S II Finally Receives CyanogenMod Posted: 21 Jul 2011 10:35 AM PDT Who wants some Bacon! The Samsung Galaxy S II now has CyanogenMod 7. The first nightly has finally hit the download mirrors and is available now. Back in June Samsung sent a few lucky developers of CM the super phone Galaxy S II and basically invited them to hack it up and get CM7 running on it. The team did just that and as a result we all benefit.
We knew nightly builds were coming soon and the group called teamhacksung have been talking about it plenty on Twitter and Google+ but now it is finally here. They posted a video showing its speed and I’ll add that below just to be nice. As always you are flashing a custom ROM and therefore are responsible for any problems that may arise, that includes if the phone starts on fire (it wont). Basically know what you are doing, and have fun. For all the info, links, and full details hit up the XDA thread. The rules are simple as you need to be rooted and just flash the latest nightly like any other ROM. It is recommended that you wipe and clear data/cache if coming from a different ROM. Again here is the direct download page for CM7 on the SGSII. [via XDA Forums] ) |
| T-Mobile HTC G2 Official Gingerbread Leaked At Support Forum Posted: 21 Jul 2011 10:14 AM PDT The HTC G2 is ready for some tasty Gingerbread this morning too. Its bigger brother the G2x saw Gingerbread leak just this morning and now the G2 wants in on the party. If you don’t want to wait for an official over the air update it is available now over on T-Mobile support forums.
With this also officially hitting support forums the OTA update is most likely headed to handsets very soon, but we know plenty of you wont want to wait. Last we heard multiple G2 warranty replacement phones were shipped with 2.3 Gingerbread and my sources are indeed saying this is the same build so most likely this is the official real deal. As to be expected you WILL lose root, we are not sure how hard root will be to get back given how long the G2 originally took to be rooted so if you’d rather wait for the development community to check it out that isn’t a bad idea for those in need. We are also hearing reports of the phone randomly vibrating as well as some issues with the backlights on the hardware keyboard. Feel free to reply in the comment section below with any issues if you give this a try. If you like living on the edge and want to update yourself here is the link: T-Mobile G2 Support Forum [via Android Police] ) |
| T-Mobile LG G2x Gingerbread Update Available Now, Just Not OTA Posted: 21 Jul 2011 09:45 AM PDT Reports are starting to stream in this morning that the G2x update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread appears to been leaked by LG. We are still not completely sure if this is the official version that will be rolling out OTA (over the air) in the next few days or if this was simply an accident. Over on the LG support forums an announcement for Gingerbread was made saying the update was available via LG’s proprietary Mobile Software Update Tool.
Over on XDA users are jumping for joy because they’ve been waiting for this update all summer. From initial reports the update is 178MB and brings us to build GRI40, or Android 2.3.3. Although some users mentioned the nifty LG camera app was removed and now they have the stock gingerbread camera we are still fishing through the information and will flash our own G2x shortly. Obviously this is more of an official release so you will lose root. The update tool linked to below will inform users they will lose all data but many at the XDA forums are reporting all apps still intact after the update completes. It’s actually really easy and you need to be running an Android 2.2 ROM for the updater to recognize you need the update, preferably running the stock build then you just follow the instructions. Download: LG Update Tool Now if you need a nandroid backup of the stock ROM check here That’s it folk, easy as can be but as always do this at your own risk. [via XDA Forums] ) |
| HTC Wildfire S Announced for T-Mobile Posted: 21 Jul 2011 09:32 AM PDT Today the team at T-Mobile will be announcing the availability of the HTC Wildfire S, a lovely little HTC device made to compete against the mid-tier onslaught we’ve been witnessing from Samsung, LG, and the lot. This device will be available on August 3rd, 2011, for $79.99 after a cool $50 mail-in rebate and tied to a 2-year agreement with qualifying “Classic” voice and data plan. This device will be running Android 2.3.x Gingerbread and will of course have a new version of HTC Sense for your ease of use.
Whether or not that means it’ll be working with T-Mobile’s new unlimited tiered system is a question we’ve posed to T-Mobile and are still waiting on a reply about. Check out the Tiered-Unlimited plans and let us know what you think. THis device will have a cool 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen display and will have at least one camera (on the back) at 5-megapixels large. You’ll be able to grab this device in a lovely white color finish at T-Mobile stores nationwide as well as at their online stores. There’ll also be a special black color finish edition available at Walmart, Sam’s Club, and again, at T-Mobile’s online store at http://ww.t-mobile.com/. Which one shall you choose? This device is almost certainly going to be able to compete against – and very likely win if the chassis are built right like HTC always does – the rest of the mid-range Android devices on T-Mobile. We’ve recently done a few reviews of the Samsung trio of mid-range devices on T-Mobile, check em out, and get ready for the Wildfire because it’s gonna be a fireball. | Lenovo IdeaPad K1 On Sale Now for $500 USD Posted: 21 Jul 2011 09:02 AM PDT With shipments going out on August 1st, Lenovo’s newest effort in a rather rounded Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet will be going on sale today. This device has several different models coming down the pipeline while only the 32GB model is available for sale right this moment. That said, you’ve got a couple color options available as well in the basic pack, that being white and silver or red and silver – this is amongst a few other color combinations that’ll be available down the line, each of these combinations with a slightly different tactile feel for your fingers on the back of the device.
Each of these tablets totes an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB or RAM and a camera on the back and a camera on the front. You can get the most basic package, that being just the device itself in either white or red for $499.99 USD. On the other hand, if you want to upgrade to a slightly cooler version of the tablet (with the same guts, mind you,) you can pay $519.99 and get the black and silver variant complete with a leather cover. All of these tablet variants have 1GB of RAM, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 glossy-finish touchscreen display. You’ve got a 2-megapixel camera up front, a 5-megapixel camera on the back, and ports galore. There’s a USB 2.0 port, a headphone jack, and a microSD card slot. There’s also a mini HDMI port for all of your futuristic Netflix on tablet playing (as it’ll be available at launch) and the whole package comes in that lovely bigtime fine on the hands feel. Also you should note that this tablet isn’t trying to win the contest for thinnest by any means, coming in at 13.3mm while, for example, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes in at 8.6mm. If you’d like to get a much better idea of what it means to hold this cool new slate, head back to our full hands-on report from earlier this week. We’ve got to let you know! [via SlashGear] ) |
| Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:21 AM PDT If you are on AT&T and have been lusting after the Samsung Nexus S Android smartphone the device is coming to AT&T. The smartphone packs in the specifications that we are already familiar with from when the smartphone hit other carriers like Cincinnati Bell. The smartphone will hit Best Buy Mobile stores on July 24 and the pre-ordering begins today.
The smartphone runs Android 2.3 and has a Samsung Super AMOLED screen with touch capability. That screen is 4-inches wide and the smartphone operates on the AT&T 3G network. The processor inside the device runs at 1GHz and the phone has full web support. It also supports gestures with pinch to zoom and more. The front camera is a VGA resolution unit with the rear having 5MP resolution. The rear camera can also record video. The device also features Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, 3D motion for gaming, tethering support and NFC. The screen resolution is 480 x 800 and the battery promises to last up to 6.5 hours with talk and up to 450 on standby. ) |
| Cute Cut the Rope star Om Nom goes plush and gets a comic Posted: 21 Jul 2011 07:49 AM PDT When it comes to game apps there are a bunch of them installed on my phone and tablet but I only ever play two of them – Angry Birds and Cut the Rope. My kids like Cut the Rope better and I always know when my daughter has the tablet because I hear her say, “AHHHHH! Eat it stupid monster!” everytime she misses. Om Nom, the green candy fiend from the game is going plush in September.
The plush toys are going to be offered in different sizes and styles at an undisclosed price. Angry Birds went down the same merchandising path when it decided to cash in on the popularity of the game. Om Nom is also heading to another medium with a big announcement at Comic-Con. The developer of the game, ZeptoLab, has signed with Ape Entertainment to develop a comic series based on the character. The comics will be of the digital sort and will be based on the game. It will allow fans to explore the untold back story of Om Nom. Perhaps we will find how he came to be crammed in that box and how his teeth stay white and healthy with all the candy he eats. The comics will hit the iPhone in late August and hopefully the comics will come to other platforms thereafter. ) |
| SwiftKey X app is free on Amazon Appstore for Android today Posted: 21 Jul 2011 04:15 AM PDT A week ago, today we tossed up our hands-on impression of the SwiftKey X app that aims to make your on screen typing easier. Cory liked the app a lot and went so far as to say it was the best typing experience he has had on a tablet. If you liked the idea of the app and thought it would be cool to try, but you are the sort that doesn’t like paying for apps here is your chance to get SwiftKey X for free.
The app is on the Amazon Appstore for Android at no cost right now. This is the full app, not a cut down free or trial version. The app has a bunch of features that make it very functional. The app uses a split key arrangement locating the keys closer to your thumbs. The number pad is in the middle of the letter keys. It features auto correction and supports nine different languages along with multi-touch and voice-to-text dictation. The app also has a strong fluency prediction engine and the user can personalize the typing with cloud-based personalization. This app is normally $3.99 and will only be free today so grab it while you can. [via Amazon] ) |
| Motorola DROID Bionic Landing Page Leak Fabricated Posted: 20 Jul 2011 10:17 PM PDT There’s a DroidDoes graphic page floating around out there and it’s got everyone’s favorite upcoming device right at the forefront: the DROID Bionic, aka a dual-core LTE connected device from Motorola and busting out on Verizon more than likely on August 4th. It’s nothing to scoff at with a 4.3-inch qHD Pentile Matrix display, 8 megapixel camera on the back, and that fat dual-core processor from out good friends at Texas Instruments. That’s right, the TI's OMAP 4430 1GHz dual-core processor busting out on the nation’s fastest network – Verizon’s 4G LTE. Win! But wait – there’s a mystery afoot – we see some misplaced pixels, and you know what that means – investigation time!
The thing with this listing is that while it may certainly seem like the real deal, awesome and amazing, it’s actually quite photoshopped. That’s not to say that we’ve not got a new spec with $300 as the price for this new leader of men, but the image you see above is constructed by someone with the ability to copy squares of color and paste them ever so lightly. Let’s talk about how and where, and note that as we take this image apart, so too do we take apart the culture we live in where the fact that there’s a leak supersedes the fact that most leaks are fakes, and that just ain’t right. You can see the original image in the gallery at full yet sharp and blurry size in the gallery below if you wish. On with the evidence!
1) The first telling mistake is the DROID BIONIC logo. Where you’ll notice the craftsmanship on the Droid Incredible 2 and the Droid Charge are perfect, as per the lining up of the D and the E on Droid Charge and the D and the 2 on Droid Incredible 2, but the Droid Bionic does not. Do you really think the designers in charge of the DROID account would make such a basic graphic design mistake as this? Not a chance.
2) Another typography-related mistake is in the logo as it sits at the bottom of the page. See here that the DROID portion is suddenly much more bold than it is in the example in the upper left. Two different logos for the same product on the same page? I don’t think so, mister.
3) Unless Verizon plans on stopping production of the DROID X2, it’s missing from the list in this mocked-up design. Between the DROID 3 and the DROID Incredible 2 should be the DROID X2, but there’s nothing.
4) This new Bionic listing has an old version of MotoBlur – or whatever they’re calling it these days. The new version of the Bionic will almost certainly hold the same or a very similar version of Blur to what we’re seeing on the DROID 3 and in the landing page’s version of the Droid X2.
5) The UI in this image is blurry. It’s also got some sponging going on, the same pixels pasted several times. The reason for that is the image is cut from the original Bionic pics we saw back in March of this year, stretched, and pasted in a new chassis. More than likely the creator couldn’t find this clean look at the image and had to use the DROID LIFE image from eBay, needing to copy-paste out their original watermark. Furthermore, the time on the clock is even the same – 3:00. You know what that means? It’s time to get an education because you just got schooled. Take your amateur shop’ and reasoning skills and go back to Photo 101 – ya heard? ) |
| Android Community News Round-Up: July 20th, 2011 Posted: 20 Jul 2011 05:57 PM PDT I’m back today with another news round-up to keep things quick and simple for all of you that are busy these days. I’ll keep this short and sweet and give you all a few details and links to all the stories that mattered most today in the world of Android.
I’m going to start off with the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 Tablet. We were lucky enough to already have some hands-on time when they announced it today. The important thing that came from the release of this Android Honeycomb tablet is it came pre-loaded with Netflix. Until now Netflix was not supported on tablets. Shortly after that Netflix received an update in the Market adding a slew of devices to the supported list, Ideapad K1 tablet included. The IdeaPad K1 is a Tegra 2 platform tablet running on Honeycomb and if the new Netflix works on it, why not try it on other tablets. So we loaded it up on the Motorola Xoom and it worked — watching Daniel Tosh from my 10″ Xoom was a blast. You can read about that and download the new Netflix APK here. While I’m on the tablet subject don’t forget to enter the final week of our Tabletpalooza Giveaway. The myTouch 4G Gingerbread update started rolling out today while the new myTouch 4G Slide is now available for pre-order. The Samsung Galaxy S II is available this week from Virgin Mobile in Canada and while here in the states we still don’t have it we did get some updated information and should be seeing the Galaxy S II this August. The Motorola Triumph is available in the U.S. starting today from Virgin Mobile and feel free to read our full review of the Triumph. Staples is offering $100 off any Android tablet with this coupon. We got another look at the OliPad 110 tablet today and they have a 7″ tablet in the works too. Last but not least check out my latest favorite live wallpaper, and if you live near NYC go meet some other Android enthusiasts for the NYC Android Bar Crawl coming soon. That’s it folks, see ya next time! ) |
| Sparkling Particle 3D Live Wallpaper, It’s Awesome and Free Posted: 20 Jul 2011 04:28 PM PDT So I’ve got this new addiction to Live Wallpapers in case you readers haven’t noticed. I’ve been finding a few cool or unique LWP each day and posting them here for everyone else to love and enjoy, and today is no different. Today I found an awesome LWP that is also free. It might not look that great from the screenshots, but on the device it’s actually really nice and my new favorite.
I know many users don’t like live wallpapers because they might hinder performance, or lower battery life. This one is really simple and extremely smooth on the three devices I’ve tried it on. The developer gives plenty of options to help conserve battery life and performance. You can lower the frames per second if your phone can’t handle it (all mine are smooth at stock settings) you can completely customize and adjust the particle count. I added the full 250 and it was pretty crazy but I like it around 125. It works beautifully on my Xoom too.
They slowly spiral on screen and it almost feels like a screensaver but totally awesome to have as your wallpaper. You can change background to any color you prefer as well as even load your own background images. At first I passed this up but once you watch the video and see it in action you’ll go download it as quickly as I did. Like mentioned this one is completely free so run to the market and download it or just click here. I’ve been using it since about 7 AM this morning on my HTC Sensation and battery seems the same as any other day in case you were wondering about battery usage. Once again this is called Sparkling Particle 3D Live Wallpaper and it’s totally free. Below you can scan or click the QR code to easily download the app. Enjoy! – Thanks Paul Moody ) |
| Delta Airlines App Update Lets You Choose Your Seat Posted: 20 Jul 2011 02:59 PM PDT I know, Delta Airlines App, doesn’t sound exciting, but anything that lets you avoid lines is pretty awesome. Delta’s app was just bumped up to version 1.5. For frequent flyers out there who know the drill, and don’t feel like waiting in line, this update is pretty nice.
Fly Delta is Delta Airlines official Android app. It lets you check in for your flight, watch flight statuses, and even download a mobile boarding pass to your phone. But you could already do all that. This update’s big feature is the ability to choose your seat from a handy little map. Normally you have to choose your seat when you purchase your ticket, and if you want to try and change it at the airport (should someone have canceled or not shown up) you have to wait in line for a terminal to check availability. Now you can do it on your phone wherever you darn well please, except maybe while going through security. You can even check your upgrade eligibility. When it comes down to it isn’t the most mind blowing of programing at work here. What the Delta app is a great example of how much Android can do just to make the little things easier. I’m a little young to go on a “in my day!” rant, but lets face it smartphones have come a long way in the last few years. ) |

| Google Labs Closes, Nothing Changes Posted: 20 Jul 2011 02:26 PM PDT It was the worst day in the history of the world this Wedesday, today if you’re reading this post on the correct day, when Google announced that they’d be closing their Google Labs department. For some this was a sign of imminent doom because they’d been experimenting right alongside Google Labs since before GMail. But for others, no change would be happening. Which are you? Let’s have a talk and see, shall we?
In the post I’ve just posted over on our sister site SlashGear, you’ll find the truth to be sort of self-evident: Google Labs is much more of an idea than it is an actual department. While the team at Google Labs did create such gems as Google Goggles and Google Reader, they’re certainly not going to be fired as a unit now that the Google Labs name is being dissipated. Just the opposite, in fact, as Google Labs will now be rolled into different departments so the group can collectively become more focused on future projects. In the original post made by Bill Coughran, SVP for Research and Systems Infrastructure, notes that there are “extraordinary opportunities ahead” and that closing Google Labs is necessary for greater focus. He also notes that speed and innovation, the two driving forces behind Google Labs, will continue, as is evident in the thus far massive success of Google Plus. Whether or not this has anything to do with the fact that the Galaxy S II is getting closer to the USA by the day and they just couldn’t handle the immense power approaching is still to be seen. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy S II Now Available From Virgin Mobile Canada Posted: 20 Jul 2011 01:22 PM PDT You might not be able to get it like right this minute but at least you can place your order and have comfort know you’ll get the sweetest Android phone soon enough. We have mentioned the Galaxy S II heading to canada more than a few times and last we heard Virgin Mobile Canada would have it July 14th. The new Samsung Galaxy S II landing page should make you excited if you’ve been waiting.
If you head over to the Virgin Mobile Website you can get it ordered now for the low low price of just $169 (or $599 outright for the cool kids). If you don’t have Virgin Mobile up in Canada it should be headed to multiple carriers in the coming weeks. If you’d like to see more of it feel free to read over our initial hands-on as well as our Galaxy S II Review. Again we are still waiting for this phone to arrive for the U.S. but we did get some good news this morning and we should be seeing it here sometime in August. Better late than never right? | Olivetti Olipad 110 Shows Up Again with 7 Inch Little Brother Posted: 20 Jul 2011 01:09 PM PDT The Olivetti Olipad 110 popped up last month sporting the same specs we’ve seen on just about every Honeycomb tablet. The Olipad 110 was spotted recently in Brazil, and with it the Olipad 70. With plenty of other tablets around in both size factors with similar specs we’ll have to see if these new-comers have anything to offer over the other tablets from bigger manufacturers.
The Olipad 110 is a 10.1″ Honeycomb 3.1 tablet with, you guessed it, a Tegra 2 processor, 1280×800 screen, and 1 GB of RAM. With a rumored price of $550 for the version packing 16 GB of memory I personally don’t see this tablet bringing much that isn’t already around. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thinner, the XOOM is better supported, and the Transformer offers more connectivity. The Olipad 70 enters a less crowded market. We also don’t know much about the specs it will have. What we do know is that it will be a WiFi model, and runs Gingerbread. This puts it in the running against the HTC Flyer and original Samsung Galaxy Tab. Click here to view the embedded video. The tablets were displayed at Eletrolarshow in Brazil (as seen in the video above). Unfortunately Google Translate doesn’t work on entire Youtube clips yet, but as of now we don’t know a release date. Are any of you looking forward to this tablet? It seems like Olivetti’s entering the game this late with the same rough price point and no killer features. [via Bondfaro] ) |
| Netflix Update Works on Honeycomb Tablets, Download It Here Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:55 PM PDT This is excellent news and something I’ve been waiting to get on my Tablet. For all you Honeycomb users you can now play and stream Netflix right on your tablet. I’ve been testing it and can confirm it works great on my Motorola Xoom. Netflix received an update this morning making 24 devices officially supported and in that list was the new Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet running Android Honeycomb.
We have also tested the recently updated APK on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it works perfect. Streaming movies works great on these tablets and I’m sure more devices will most likely work. This is fresh off the market so we will look deeper into this and report any and all findings. For now we wont keep you waiting, just download the new Netflix v1.3 APK and install it like any other application and you’re all set. Download: Netflix_1.3.apk Once we heard the new Lenovo tablets would be coming pre-installed with Netflix we started to wonder and when the update hit the market earlier today I was rushing to get the APK and give it a try. Hopefully we hear something official from NVIDIA or Netflix soon. [via Droid-Life] ) |
| Netflix for Android Updated, Now Supports More Devices and a Tablet Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:20 PM PDT The Netflix for Android app received some updated information this morning as well as posted a huge list with 20+ supported devices, somehow they managed to update the info but they never hit the green button to push the update. It is however now available in the Android Market and you can get it now and try it on your own device.
Currently Netflix official playback is limited to just the list provided below, but as always some users are reporting it works on their phone by installing the APK manually. I’ll get right into the updated list so you can see if your phone is officially supported or not. • Casio G’zOne Commando C771 with Android 2.2 Two important parts I want to mention. First being the Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet that was just announced this morning as it runs Honeycomb and is showing as being supported. That would be the first Honeycomb tablet to get Netflix. We also see the Droid Bionic on the list but we already know its coming soon, more clarification the better though right? Either way head to the market and give it a try, I’ll be testing out that new APK on my Xoom soon and see if it works but I have my doubts. [via Android Market] ) |

None other than our main main Simms22 will be at this bar crawl, and if you go, you’re REQUIRED to purchase him a drink. No exceptions!
