| UK movie piracy scorecard: Hollywood 1, BT 0 Posted: 28 Jul 2011 09:09 AM PDT
Today's winners include Paramount Pictures and Disney Enterprises, but even more important is the case. According to IBTimes, this is the first case in the UK in which an internet provider has been forced to block access to a website under the 1988 Copyright, Design and Patents Acts. Even more shocking is that BT told Reuters the company thinks the ruling is "helpful" and is not going to appeal against the decision. It looks like Newzbin2 and its 700,000 members will need to find a new site to download movies. I'm sure there's more than a few torrent sites on the net willing to step up and fill the void, but at least Hollywood managed to walk away with a win for once. The never-ending fight against piracy continues. via IBTimes Related posts:

| RIM unveils BlackBerry Messenger 6: BBM goes social with new connected apps Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:47 AM PDT
BBM 6 does not live and breath entirely within the application. Instead it includes status updates on your BBM profile when you use BBM connected apps. There's a custom area within your BBM profile where BBM connected pas can insert status updates — things like high scores, trophies, achievements, etc. A good example of the integration is allowing your BBM friends to see your recently earned foursquare badges. Since BBM 6 is "socially-enabled", you'll see BBM integrated in many of your favorite apps. You can select BBM contacts right from within the app and invite them to download the app or join in. Additionally you can have a BBM chat from within the app. No more switching between BBM and apps when you want to chat with your friends. Here's a quick rundown of the apps which are now "BBM connected" in the BlackBerry App World: News and Sports: ScoreMobile, Navita Sports, Goal Mobile, Placar UOL, Huffington Post. Location and Travel: Poynt, foursquare, Navigator, Celebrate with Mobiesta – A Fun App for India, askaila Streetsmart, Navita Translator. Music: Nobex Radio. Games and Entertainment: Jingu, Backgammon King, Forces of War, Pocket Ants, Photo Boot, Battles on BBM, Dark Galaxy, Villians. E-commerce: Mercado Livre. Productivity and Collaboration: PowWow Premium. Stay tuned as more apps incorporate BBM. You can also check for the new BBM connected app icon in the App World. | London underground goes live via Google Maps Transit Navigation Posted: 28 Jul 2011 08:14 AM PDT
As with most things Google, the public transportation directions for London come by way of Transit Navigation (Beta). Just search for your destination, select it on the map and choose the "Directions" option. The suggested trips will be based on your location by default and provide you multiple alternative whenever possible. I can't speak to the accuracy of the public transpiration directions in London, but here in Los Angeles I've used the feature to travel by bus and train with great success. Bus times were accurate and easy, even for a first time rider. So give Transit Navigation (Beta) a go and let us know how the directions work out. Out Now | Google | Free Related posts:

| 250 Canon DSLRs and Arduino help create an amazing flash-powered display Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:54 AM PDT
Amazing, right? Using 250 flash-equipped Canon DSLRs, the cameras were strapped to a frame wall and connected together. The team then programmed the cameras to fire at controlled intervals by harnessing the power of Arduino. Add up the cost of 250 Canon 60Ds with external flash and we might be looking at the world's most expensive five minute light show. via Geeky-Gadgets Related posts:

| Sony slashes PlayStation Vita RAM from 512MB to 256MB? Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:23 AM PDT
Although the alleged RAM cut sounds bad on paper, the reality is the PlayStation Vita still offers eight times the memory of the PSP. If the current crop of PlayStation portable gaming titles can achieve such impressive results with 32MB of RAM, 256MB should be more than enough for the next-gen console. Official word from Sony remains to be seen, but today's news corroborates rumors from IndustryGamers which started back in May. Let's just hope that Sony passes on the savings to the customer — 256MB less memory has to be worth a discount at the register, don't you think? Related posts:

| MSI unveils new GE620DX Core i7 gaming laptop with THX surround sound Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:02 AM PDT
Just like a MacBook Pro, the MSI GE620DX automatically switches between its discrete graphics and integrated graphics chip — the only difference is MSI calls the technology "GPU Boost". As the headline suggests, MSI's Premium Sound technology is complimented by THX TruStudio Pro to deliver "cinema-quality" surround sound through its internal speakers. MSI says, "they help to reproduce music faithfully." Other highlights to the GE620DX include DDR3 memory (up to 8GB), a 15.6 HD LED backlit display, a Blu-ray/DVD super multi drive, USB 3.0 support, a HD webcam (720p), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR. There's been no word on a release date or price for the MSI GE620DX. Coming Soon | MSI | TBD Related posts:

| White Samsung Galaxy S II heads to Europe on August 15th Posted: 28 Jul 2011 06:48 AM PDT
A change as subtle as switching a phone's casing from black to white has proven a considerable challenge in the past — just ask Apple. Unlike the white iPhone 4 debacle, the white Galaxy S II will come to market roughly four months after the original. Expect the S 2 to climb to the top of more European sales charts and a higher Korean mobile phone market share next quarter. How long will it take Samsung to reach 10 million units sold now that a white Galaxy S II is headed to Europe and a US launch is nearing? via Android and Me Related posts:

| Gmail Intervention: annoy friends with ageing email addresses Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:36 AM PDT If you’ve got friends still plugging away with an ancient aol.com address or a once hilariously named Hotmail account they created when they were fifteen, Google has created a new service to encourage you to irritate them into using Gmail. The Gmail Email Intervention site suggests some email addresses are so “embarassingly out of date” they should be consigned to the dustbin of history like floppy disks, portable CD players and scrunchies. The Gmail Intervention site gives you the option of sending one of three email templates to friends who aren’t yet using Gmail – Straightforward: I’m here to help, Concerned: I’m worried about you and Outraged: You’re embarrassing me. There’s a YouTube video starring Dr. Richard Muscat, an invented "intervention expert", to help your intervention along or you can record your own clip. While we know Google is just being light-hearted in its attempt to outdo rival webmail services, there’s something a little bit too smug about the Intervention campaign. And we’re not too sure that spamming your friends is the best way to persuade them your choice of email service is the best. Click through to see the Gmail Intervention video and let us know what you make of it in the comments.

| Amazon Android tablets: 4 million to ship by Christmas Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:03 AM PDT
Previous reports claimed Amazon will launch a 7in tablet – codenamed Coyote – with a Tegra 2 processor and a 10in model nicknamed Hollywood rocking the new quadcore NVIDIA Kal-El chipset. While Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos, has only hinted about tablet plans in the past the number of details floating around suggests we’ll see something soon. And if that figure of 4 million tablets headed for production is true, it means Amazon has iPad-scale ambitions. Out TBC | £TBC | Amazon (via DigiTimes) Related posts:
