iPhone Air concept: the smartphone Apple needs to develop

iPhone Air concept: the smartphone Apple needs to developThe fifth generation iPhone, the iPhone 4S or 5, is due out late August or early September. As we patiently await its arrival, it's time to open the door for design concepts of the sixth generation iPhone — the iPhone Air. The design concept mixes the side profile of the MacBook Air and a beautiful edgeless display. This is the iPhone Apple should develop.

Words can't describe the beauty that is the iPhone Air. The 3.7 to 4.0-inch display and teardrop shape pair perfectly. The design improves on an earlier iPhone 5 concept we uncovered by our friends at thisismynext.com, but honestly we love them both. With any luck Apple will take note of these quality designs and incorporate them into future generation iPhones.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 does exist, launch scheduled for ‘early August’

Acer Iconia Tab A100 does exist, launch scheduled for 'early August'The HTC Flyer will finally have a competitor next month when the Acer Iconia Tab A100 is officially released. We had our doubts as to whether the tablet would see a release, but alas Acer has gone official with an announcement. The A100 will be released in 'early August' and the company promises the delays are in the past.

As the younger brother to the 10-inch Acer A500, we began to wonder what happened to the A100 when a 4G version of the A500 (the A501) randomly showed up on Amazon for pre-order. So what took the A100 so long to arrive? According to Engadget, Acer A100 was delayed because of Honeycomb's restrictions on 7-inch displays.

Just a refresher, the A100 features a 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB internal storage and a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. There's no telling how well the A100 will fare against the similarly equipped HTC Flyer, but we welcome competition. The Acer A100 carries a suggested retail price of $300.

HTC rides money train through second quarter, revenues up 104 percent on the year

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 07:45 AM PDT

HTC rides money train through second quarter, revenues up 104 percent on the yearAll aboard, the HTC money train is now leaving the station. The Taiwanese giant announced net profits of NT$17.51 billion for the second quarter, up 18 percent from last quarter and 103 percent on the year. HTC shipped 12.1 million units in the quarter, up 25 percent over last and 124 percent on the year.

If you thought the second quarter was huge, wait until you hear HTC's third quarter forecasts. The company projects its revenues to top NT$137 billion for an increase of 10 percent over the second quarter and 80 percent on the year. Total smartphone shipments will grow 98 percent on the year to 13.5 million and gross margin will range between 27.5 and 28.5 percent.

Overall, HTC is looking strong across the board. Let's just hope investors can find at least something to like in the second quarter financials and their quarter forecast. Maybe a glimpse of the HTC Puccini will do the trick.

Motorola shipped 440,000 tablets and 4.4M smartphones in the second quarter

Motorola shipped 440,000 tablets and 4.4M smartphones in the second quarterMotorola Mobility came up big with an increase in handset, smartphone and tablet sales in the second quarter, but still managed to post a net loss. The company shipped 11 million handsets, including 4.4 million smartphones compared to 9.3 million handsets and 4.1 million smartphones in the first quarter. Motorola Xoom shipments nearly doubled, up from 250,000 in the first quarter to 440,000.

With an increase is handset shipments and sales across the board you would think that Motorola would be able to stay out of the red — this was not the case. The company posted a net loss of $56 million in the quarter, down from a net profit of $80 million in the year-ago period. Not all was bad, however, revenue was up 41 percent from the year-ago quarter ($2.4 billion from $1.7 billion).

During the today's earnings call, Motorola's CEO promised to release another 4G LTE smartphone and two new 4G LTE tablets by year's end. A mysterious photo of an unnamed Motorola handset leaked onto the internet yesterday which looks very similar to the Motorola Atrix, but with a larger 4.3-inch display. This unnamed handset and the Droid Bionic appear to be the only 4G LTE handsets planned for the remainder of 2011. Will this be enough to turn the company around before the end of the year?

Sony Ericsson is planning a massive 4.7-inch glasses-free 3D smartphone

Sony Ericsson is planning a massive 4.7-inch glasses-free 3D smartphonSony Ericsson is prepared to blur the line between tablet and smartphone with its upcoming 4.7-inch 3D display. The massive display will be featured on the company's first 3D phone, a device many believe will arrive early next year. Unfortunately mystery phone lacks a name, but we have confirmed it will support glasses-free 3D technology and runs at HD 1280×720 pixel resolution. Do we really need another 3D smartphone?

Sony Ericsson's first 3D smartphone shares a lot in common with the rumors Samsung Galaxy Q. Both devices offer larger-than-life displays (5.3-inches vs 4.7-inches) and neither will fit in a pair of skinny jeans. The only difference, at least as far as we can tell, is that the Galaxy Q might be marketed as a tablet instead of a phone.

Currently we have the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC EVO 3D. In addition, Samsung has been rumored to be working on a Galaxy 3D according to Korean news outlet ETNews. With three of the major smartphone players launching a 3D phone, it seems only fitting that Sony Ericsson would launch a device of its own.

Whether or not the world needs another 3D smartphones is open for discussion (or debate). Personally, I'd prefer Sony Ericsson focus its talents towards developing better 2D smartphones and increased availability in North America. They stepped up the game at this year's CES convention, but lately they've fallen off the radar — at least to this smartphone enthusiast. Now we ask you: should Sony Ericsson release a 3D smartphone?

Olympus E-PL3 launching this September with your choice of a zoom or pancake lensA release date has been set for the Olympus E-PL3, a more compact and modern looking mid-range spin off of the PEN E-P3. As the latest addition to the Olympus PEN lineup, the E-PL3 will launch alongside the new VF-3 electronic viewfinder this September. With four color choices (black, white, red, silver) and two camera bundles to choose from, the micro four thirds game now has a new challenger.

We first heard about the Olympus E-PL3 in June when the camera became official. Today, the manufacturer has confirmed a September launch and two equally priced kits which include the FL-LM1 clip-on flash. The first kit comes with a wide-angle zoom M. Zuiko 14-42 lens with fast autofocus and silent AF operation. The second kit includes the M. Zuiko 17mm ultra-compact and portable wide-angle pancake lens. Both kits will be priced at £430 ($699) when released this September.

In addition to the camera kits, Olympus will introduce the VF-3 electronic viewfinder. The VF-3 can be rotated up to 90-degrees for obscure shooting angles and allows tweaking of both brightness and color temperature.

Apple replaces Nokia as the world’s biggest smartphone maker

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 03:35 AM PDT

Bad news for Nokia. According to new figures, iPhone growth has enabled Apple to pass it and take the top spot as the world’s biggest smartphone maker with Samsung shoving its way into second place. The report from Strategy Analytics says Apple shipped the most smartphones of any manufacturer in the second quarter of 2011 with 20.3 million handsets pumped out into the wild. Apple also comes out top on marketshare with 18% of the market.

Samsung’s achievement is even more impressive. It shipped just 3.1 million phones in the same quarter last year but this year the number has jumped to 19.2 million (an increase of 520%) on the back of the success of the Samsung Galaxy S2. Nokia will hope that moving to Windows Phone 7 later this year will revive its fortunes. Its smartphone shipments dropped by 7.1 million handsets from this time last year.

Microsoft awkwardly mocks Google: meet Gmail Man!

Posted: 29 Jul 2011 03:05 AM PDT

While Google openly made light of Hotmail with its Gmail Intervention campaign this week, it seems Microsoft has been mocking Gmail in private. A video, allegedly shown at its annual Microsoft Global Exchange sales conference, introduces a brand new character – Gmail Man! The nosy character rifles through your mail to find keywords and serve you ads.

Google obviously wouldn’t agree that its contextual Gmail ads, which are generated by algorithms, count as snooping but the video is designed to promote Office 365, Microsoft’s suite of apps which competes with Gmail.

The Gmail Man video was leaked to ZD Net’s Mary-Jo Foley and while Microsoft won’t comment on whether it really is official, there is a big clue. The office Gmail Man visits belongs to Contoso Ltd, one of Microsoft’s favourite fake company names which crops up in lots of other videos and demos.

Whether you agree with the points made by the clip or not, it’s one of the most awkward Microsoft videos we’ve ever seen, up there with Rick Gervais training Microsoft staff and Steve Balmer and Bill Gates’ road trip. Click through to see Gmail Man for yourself…
