Motorola Droid Bionic Picture Gallery Surfaces, 4.5″ Screen and All

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 11:00 AM PDT

I feel like we’ve been beating this entire story and name with a stick, but the Droid Bionic is at it again with an entire gallery of leaked photos giving us a much better look at that pretty front bezel and the rest of the device at the same time. A few photos leaked yesterday but today the gallery is much larger. Latest reports are also suggesting this bad boy will have a 4.5″ screen rather than 4.3″ like originally suggested but we’ve known that for a while.

The Droid Bionic was originally leaked in these photos with what was being reported as a 4.5″ qHD display and we have since seen plenty of pictures suggesting just that. This latest image tweaked to see just the screens by androidandme shows the screen clear as day as being bigger than the Samsung Droid Charge and its 4.3″ screen.

I think it is safe to say for sure that the Motorola Droid Bionic will be rocking an awesome qHD 4.5″ display along with that dual-core and 4G LTE. Sadly we are all still patiently waiting for it to see the light of day for the rest of the world while these images just tease us for now.

The official word is the Bionic will be here this September, and this recent leak claims the 8th so be sure to mark the date in your calender and start saving those pennies. With all these delays Samsung aims to beat Motorola to the market with the first 4G LTE dual-core phone on Verizon. Things are heating up to end the summer and it will be interesting to watch it all unfold. More pictures at the via below.

Samsung Hercules Spotted in the Wild?

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 10:24 AM PDT

We have heard the name Samsung Hercules more than a few times. Original reports suggest the Hercules will be the Galaxy S II variant for T-Mobile with a large 4.5″ screen. It appears to have been spotted in the wild running on TELUS and from first glance the hardware looks stellar and I want it already.

We did see a Samsung device recently clear the FCC that might be the Hercules so it might be coming sooner than we expect, with photos like the above starting to appear that is only a good sign. Mobile Syrup caught the device running around with its 4.5″ screen and 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor so things are adding up nicely with previous reports.

They mention the hardware is great and it looks like a mix between a Samsung Galaxy S II and the Nexus S, that combination sounds awesome to me and with that 4.5″ screen you can’t forget the Infuse 4G either. Our sources do mention the stock 480×800 resolution on board but we are hoping their eyes are deceiving them, I’d hope for a higher resolution on that big of a display.

HTC Puccini Screenshots Appear, Custom UI and Bloatware Included

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 10:02 AM PDT

The HTC Puccini is the code name for what will be the first Android Honeycomb tablet for HTC and it’s headed for AT&T with 4G LTE. We first saw some leaked pictures a few weeks ago you can see here, but now we are seeing actual screenshots of the device running some heavy customizations as well as that wonderful stuff we call bloatware.

This isn’t really all that surprising as HTC is the king of custom user interfaces with the highly popular HTC Sense UI. I personally love stock vanilla Android on both Gingerbread and Honeycomb myself. We can expect to see some sort of HTC Sense on the Puccini that is for sure, but we are also seeing loads of AT&T bloatware. As long as they don’t pre-load this thing with Bing I’ll be okay.

We do have the split keyboard layout we have been seeing as of late and I like the look. The new Wifi icon and menu button on screen in the image above are a little odd though.

We wont show you all of the bloatware but you can see plenty of AT&T branded apps pre-installed above. I counted like 5 straight off the back and then gave up on looking for more. Pre-installed apps are to be expected so we just have to deal with the bloatware. The HTC custom UI should bring plenty of improvements and fancy designs but we wont know until we see more but here is a small preview of the settings pane.

HTC has been known for their colorful icons in settings menus etc on most Android handsets and we have no reason to believe differently for a tablet. Clearly we can see the similar UI idea’s in the above image.

We don’t know a lot about these screenshots or how close they are to being a final build, we will probably see more eventually that might shed more light on HTC’s upcoming tablet and Honeycomb UI. Interesting shots and I can’t wait to see more.

VIN Viper makes appraising a car a snap

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 07:51 AM PDT

A new app is now on the Android Market that is free to download called VIN Viper. The app is aimed at the car dealer that wants to be able to figure out a rough price that a vehicle is worth quickly right from their Android smartphone. The app uses the smartphone camera to take a photo of the VIN number. The app then decodes the VIN of the car and shows the value.

Some of the features of the app aren't free and require an account. It will interface with a Carfax account and allows the user to take photos. The app will interface with a back end at the dealer so that mangers can see the cars they are talking about in real time. The app also interfaces with Facebook. The integration allows the dealer to advertise cars right away.

The app offers access to all the major valuation guides like Black Book, NADA, and Kelly Blue Book. If a dealer has an auction account, they can integrate the app with it as well. I would think that an individual looking for a used car would be able to use the free features to make figuring out if the vehicle is a good deal easier too.

Supermarket Management game hits Android Aug 11

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 07:39 AM PDT

I have never envisioned myself as a manager at a grocery store, but a new game that was popular on other platforms is now on Android that puts you in the shoes of a manager at a supermarket. The game is called Supermarket Management and it puts the player in the shoes of Kate who lands a job at a supermakret after impressing the chain CEO.

The game lets the player fill the counters with products and provide shopping carts. You also have to direct the customers to the products and collect the money at checkout. The goal is to earn credit coins for having satisfied shoppers and earning profits. Those coins can then be traded to purchase upgrades and hire assistants.

Other coins can be purchased in the game. You will be able to but the app on the Android Market on August 11. It has four different shops and 49 levels of game play. There are also nine mini-games that the player must face.

Samsung Conquer 4G offers WiMAX for under $100

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 07:24 AM PDT

Samsung has outed its latest 4G smartphone, the CDMA/WiMAX Samsung Conquer 4G, and the first to land at under $100 from the get-go. Built around Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 3.5-inch 320 x 480 touchscreen and a 1GHz MSM8655 Snapdragon processor, the Conquer 4G will be $99.99 with a new, two-year agreement.

As the display might suggest, the rest of the Conquer 4G’s specs don’t exactly live up to flagship WiMAX smartphones we’ve seen before. There’s a 3.2-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video calls, WiFi b/g/n and GPS, along with a microSD card slot with a 2GB card pre-loaded. Mobile Hotspot functionality is supported, for up to five simultaneous clients, and the whole thing measures in at 4.57 x 2.38 x 0.46 inches and weighs 4.1 oz.

Samsung reckons the Conquer 4G will run for up to six hours of talktime on a single charge of the standard 1,500 mAh battery, which is decent enough. We’re not entirely impressed by the screen resolution, but otherwise you’re getting a fair amount for your money when the Conquer 4G arrives on August 21.

Microsoft makes three times more off patent licensing than its own mobile OS

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 07:21 AM PDT

Microsoft is really putting the screws to many companies in the Android realm with patent licensing deals that have turned out to b every lucrative. Microsoft holds several key patents and most of the key Android players are now paying Microsoft to license those patents. With the popularity of Android and the lack of popularity of Windows Phone 7, this may come as no surprise.

Microsoft makes more money off licensing its patents than it does off WP7. Not just a little more money either, Microsoft reportedly makes three times as much off licensing patents as it does WP7. Analyst Horace Dediu from ASymco claims that Microsoft makes about $15 per license for WP7 to HTC.

At the same time, it licenses the patents for Android to HTC for $5 per device and that is only one carrier. Microsoft has landed a gaggle of phone makers that are all licensing those patents and some may be paying more than HTC. For Q2 2011 Microsoft made $21 million off WP7 licensing and about $60 million from patent licensing.

Pierre Cardin shows off a 7-inch designer Android tablet

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 06:36 AM PDT

I have seen my share of designer gadgets over the years. There were several designer smartphones on the market before. This is the first designer Android tablet I have seen though. The tablet comes to us by designer Pierre Cardin. I haven’t heard that name in ten years. The designer has a new tablet with a 7-inch screen that has just launched.

The tablet is called the Pierre Cardin PC-7006 and gets power from a Samsung Cortex A8 processor running at 1GHz. The tablet comes with 512MB of RAM and has 4GB of internal storage. The tablet also has a microSD card slot for memory expansion with up to 16GB of more storage space. The PC-7006 will support 3G and WiFi as well.

To get the 3G support you do have to buy a separate 3G dongle. Other features include a 1.3MP camera, mini USB port, and a HDMI output. The little tablet measures 195 x 123 x 14mm and weighs 520g. The tablet also comes with a branded case and a gift box. The screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 and the OS the tablet runs Android 2.2. The battery is a 4400mAh unit.

Motorola KORE tipped in domain buying spree: XOOM successor?

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 02:32 AM PDT

Could Motorola’s next tablet be the KORE? That’s certainly one possibility, after the company was spotted going on a domain-buying spree earlier this week. Fusible caught five domains - MotorolaKore.comKoreMotorola.com,  Moto-Kore.comMotoKore.com and Motorola-Kore.com - each using a variant of the same KORE name.

The five purchases were only made on Wednesday this week, and so far none of the URLs link to any existing Motorola pages. While a tablet is one possibility – perhaps using Ice Cream Sandwich, which is set to debut later in 2011 – the KORE could also be a new Motorola phone, of course.

Motorola’s original Android tablet, the XOOM, got off to an early start as the first Honeycomb model to hit shelves, but has since been superseded by rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. Early criticism suggested the XOOM – and indeed Android 3.0 – had been released half-baked, with a patchy OS and missing hardware support (such as for the memory card slot). Even now, the promised Verizon LTE 4G upgrade is still yet to appear.

PowerSkin case lands for Nexus S 4G smartphone

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 02:22 AM PDT

There are a few things in life that you can never have enough of. One is money to buy all the cool gadgets you want and another thing you can never have enough of is power for your smartphone. If you have a Samsung Nexus S 4G Android smartphone and you want to get more runtime for the device PowerSkin has a new case for you to check out.

The case is in the PowerSkin series that we are familiar with that have been around for various Android smartphones for a while now. The Nexus S 4G case is a slim fitting soft silicone case that has a battery inside and plugs into the charge port of your smartphone to deliver its power. The case will fit the Nexus S 4G no matter what carrier you are on and has a 1500mAh battery inside.

That battery will add 340 more minutes of talk time. The case has a charger port on it and when you plug the phone into the outlet to charge up the battery inside the smartphone is charged first and then the battery inside the case gets its charge. When you are using the phone the battery inside the case is drained first and then the battery in the phone. This might be the perfect thing for those that use their smartphone as a hotspot frequently. The case is available right now for $59.99.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 update going OTA now

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Samsung’s OTA update for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has gone live, with the 188MB software now being offered to users of the Honeycomb slate. The new firmware brings with it Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI for tablets, upgrading the home screen with various new panes and a compact task-launcher for common apps.

There’s also a version of Swype for tablets along for the ride, together with mobile printing and several enterprise features to try to encourage businesses to consider the Tab 10.1 too. Full details of what’s in the update are here.

It’s worth noting, however, that once you’ve installed the update you won’t be able to remove it. Samsung has confirmed that it’s a permanent thing, with no roll-back option, so if you’re not sure whether you’d prefer to keep the stock Honeycomb UI – or are wary of potential bugs – then you might want to hold off until the first bug reports come in. Everyone else, hit that Update button in the Galaxy Tab 10.1′s settings page to get the new firmware.

Motorola Droid Bionic Pictures Leak Again, Looking Good On Camera

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 03:22 PM PDT

Some brand new photos of the Motorola Droid Bionic were leaked today and we are finally seeing real images of the rear of the device rather than just leaked renders or press shots. Recently Amazon gave us some good views but these shots are hands-on images. Now we get to see what some of you may actually be buying in another month or so.

While this device has leaked time and time again here is some more photos and specs. We even saw the back of the device in these leaked pictures looking different from what we see now, it appears the overall design has underwent at least 3 huge changes or more especially regarding the rear of the device.

These new photos you can see the hump on the rear starts much sooner than the Droid X and rather than be a steep incline this is more gradual and smooth. I like the design change and think it will feel better in the hands with this style versus the last. They had to make room for a fat battery, that 8MP camera as well as 4G LTE so we wont complain about the hump too much.

In cased you missed the latest news, we wont be seeing the Droid Bionic on store shelves til sometime in September. We have good reason to believe it will be September 8th to be specific. Stay tuned as I’m sure more will be coming over the next few weeks as the launch date approaches.

PSA: Galaxy Tab 10.1 Samsung UX Upgrade Will Not Be Reversible

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 02:20 PM PDT

As a reminder the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi will be receiving the new Galaxy Tab Touch Wiz UX update starting tomorrow. Users will be upgraded to a new user interface bringing tons of changes and options to the user interface of Android 3.1 Honeycomb. We have some news regarding this update and thought we’d share it with everyone as a PSA.

While the new Touch Wiz UX brings plenty of new features, users might like to know that the upgrade will be permanent. The update will come OTA starting tomorrow and users will be able to quickly update and try out the new features. The bad part here is if you don’t like the new changes you will NOT be able to reverse or disable the new user interface. Once you update you are stuck with it. Now we aren’t saying you wont like it, because it brings some awesome new things to the Tab but it may not be for everyone.

Users, who will receive the over-the-air download for their WiFi devices beginning Friday, won’t be able to remove the Samsung features even if they desire to return to the standard Android platform, Mr. Kim said.

Samsung does mention they only improved and changed things which they know users would want such as ease of use, visual appeal, and entertainment. It is not designed to be intrusive, rather it should be something users enjoy and appreciate. We got an early look a few months back and you can see that here, although this was while it was still in beta form and the final version is much smoother.

Here is the official Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Demo right from Samsung Mobile for those interested

While having unlocked and rooted devices like the Galaxy Tab nothing is actually “permanent” because advanced users can always root and flash back to stock if they choose, but for the average person this might not be a solution and that is why we felt like sharing this little PSA that the upgrade will not be removable if users want to do so. I personally plan to accept the update coming tomorrow and will be hitting update all morning til I receive it over the air.

AT&T Says it will Move Unlimited Data Customers Who are Tethering to a Tiered Plan

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 02:09 PM PDT

AT&T has said that starting as soon as August 11th, it will start moving those customers whom they’ve contacted about tethering without a specific tethering plan on to one. Those customers in question will be moved onto AT&T’s Data Pro plus Tehthering, giving them 4 GB of data to use for $45 a month.

Earlier this year AT&T sent out warnings to those illegally tethering, although the warnings did seem much more aimed at iPhone users. They threatened to move those users onto tethering plans, if they did not either stop tethering, or sign up for a plan themselves. Now AT&T has confirmed they will start making good on that threat this month.

The other big news here is that if you are on an unlimited data plan with AT&T still, you will lose it forever if they switch you. Capping your data is a hefty price to pay, so if you’ve been contacted by AT&T, better safe than sorry, stop tethering. Of course if the tethering is more important to you than the unlimited data, then its up to you to see how long you can risk it.

I for one have never been too happy with the fact wireless providers make you pay extra for tethering, but I do have to say that there is a case to be made for unlimited data, especially as we see wireless speeds approach those of our home networks.

On a tiered plan, I stick to my guns that its your data to use on whatever device you have, but the contracts over rule me. For unlimited data, there have been incidences where that top 5% have ruined the party for everyone by trying to do things as ridiculous as torrent movies through their 4G connections. I’ll end my rant there. Be warned, some Android users may not have received warnings since the campaign seems more iPhone oriented, but if you tether, do it with caution.

Google Responds to Microsoft Tweet Regarding Patents

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 01:38 PM PDT

Google has made an update to the blog post yesterday regarding the recent patent lawsuits aimed at Android and its OEM partners. This update is a response to a tweet from a Microsoft employee, calling out Google, saying that Microsoft invited Google to join their collective bid for patents recently. Google outlines their strategic reasons for turning it down.

Lets get straight to it. According to their official blog, Google would have been buying those patents as leverage to deter companies such as Microsoft and Apple from going after Android, and Google’s partners in the Open Handset Alliance. Since buying the patents collectively would have granted all the companies involved a license for the patents in question.

Basically, Google only wanted these patents if the others involved DIDN’T. That would allow them to threaten to sue the others if they sued Android device manufacturers. In other words, Google was looking to create a sort of “patent Cold War.” Hardly the high road, but it IS pretty standard practice these days.

Google claims that Microsoft’s invitation was merely a trick which would have let Google help foot the bill, while neutering the patents as a defense for Android. Its good to see Google speaking out in defense of its partners with Android, but whether it will do any good is yet to be seen.

Motorola Droid X2 Gingerbread SBF Leaks

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:45 PM PDT

With the Motorola Droid X2 recently being updated to Gingerbread users might be a little cautious with flashing custom ROM’s or anything else that may potentially cause issues for the phone. In case you don’t know SBF files will save your handset and bring it back to stock life if you mess it up while tweaking or hacking it.

Thanks to a man over at XDA the SBF files for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread build on the Droid X2 are now available. You might not need this now, but I’d download it in case you need to restore or save your device in the future. You never know when that CM7 build you just flashed was accidentally something else and jacks up your phone and will need the SBF files to save it.

So next time you need to bring your Droid X2 running Gingerbread back to its factory state you’ll be able to using these files. As always make sure to use caution when flashing anything especially on recent Motorola phones. For more details on how to actually use SBF files make sure you check out XDA and ask any questions should you need to.

Verizon LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is Rooted and Hacked to Run Netflix

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:40 PM PDT

This isn’t much of a surprise, since we’ve already seen root for the Google IO and retail WiFi versions of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but happy news none-the-less. Verizon’s new LTE-toting version of the world’s slimmest Android tablet is officially rooted thanks to the fellows at XDA. With root comes all your favorite hacks and mods, including the ability to stream your Netflix movies, over that screaming fast LTE.

Rooting, gives you superuser access to your phone, something many won’t have a use for, but for the more hack-inclined, it can be critical. Getting root can vary in difficulty, but luckily this one is fairly straightforward. All you have to do is download the exploit .zip file, move it to the internal storage, reboot into recovery, and flash it.

Using your new found root access, you can hit up XDA’s forums to find different hacks and mods for your enjoyment. Among these is the ability to run Netflix. Once again you just flash a .zip in recovery, and install a supplied apk, and voila! movies!

All the downloads, details, and instructions are available over at XDA. As always, make sure you backup important files when messing around with recovery or root. Be sure to read through all the instructions and make sure you understand what to do before you take the plunge. Once you are all prepped, dive in and revel in your freedom!

LG Gelato Spotted for T-Mobile

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 12:16 PM PDT

What you’re going to see in the gallery below is a rather tiny image of the device you see directly below, save for one rather important marking: a T-mobile logo near the top on the front. This again may seem sort of unimportant since this device is set to replace the LG Optimus One, both of them being entry-level devices, save another rather important factoid: this device will be rolling out with NFC equipped. This will make the device one of only a few smartphone devices on the market today with NFC abilities, this aside the Samsung Nexus S and the T-Mobile Nokia C7 – a meeGo device.

The same source that brings you the small image below notes that this device will likely be heading to AT&T as well, this all happening inside August of 2011. Users will then have to decide if they want this entry-level device for its NFC abilities and its Gingerbread out of the box or if they’ll want to go with such devices as the LG THRILL 4G with its 3D abilities, the LG Revolution on Verizon for its 4G LTE capabilities, LG Optimus 3D for it’s off-carrier 3D abilities, LG G2x for its dual-core power along with sweet glass front and sleek design, or the LG G-Slate of course if they’d like a tablet.

Which device will you choose? Are you ready for the NFC revolution, or do you plan on skipping said technology in favor of on-screen deals and other non-physical interactions? Do you believe in the future of NFC? Do you think its enough of a draw for businesses that it makes sense to include said technology on devices such as these? Let us know!

HTC Wildfire S Review

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:46 AM PDT

Welcome to the smallest member of the HTC Android family, one that fits directly in the palm of your hand, comes in at least a couple of cool color combinations, and beats out the whole rest of the world in mid-range competition. This is the HTC Wildfire S, the newest in a lovely line of HTC devices announced back in February, plus more since, these being thus: myTouch 4G Slide, Sensation, Flyer (tablet), and Facebook phones – ChaCha (aka Status on AT&T) and Salsa. Will the HTC Wildfire S stand up with the impressive lineup HTC has already released this summer season? Let’s take a look!

Before we continue, let’s have a look at our hands-on video so you know how incredibly handheld this device is, how the UI is looking, and what’s under the boot. This video shows yours truly taking the device out of the box for the first time as well as starting it up and exploring the contents:

Hardware

This being the smallest HTC device on the block, one might think that it’s squished, tinier than it aught to be, too small for Android. While this may be true of the competition whose devices are essentially the same size with basically have the pixel resolution in the display, here the HTC crew have provided a start screen for such a small device on a TFT display that looks rather bright and nice. The only complaint I’ve got about interactivity is the small area in which now the four Android menu buttons and the buttons at the bottom of the display (for apps, phonecalls, whatever you might put there.) This area has many different things now in very close proximity, a situation where a person with above-average sized fingers might find tapping to be rather inaccurate.

On the other hand, the rest of the display is just the right size for tiny computing. As this device is rolling out with a 600Mhz processor on a single-core chip, we won’t be using it for too many high-quality apps. On the other hand, its size and its ability to use music apps like Spotify and DoubleTwist (a shortcut for DoubleTwist is included on the device out of the box), this handset is perfect for day-to-day media interaction. The speaker is loud, the construction is creak-free, and the plastic making up most of the casing is not quite as nice as HTC usually comes out with, but isn’t the worst we’ve seen as far as quality goes either. Having the ability to get a different color combination in this device is a plus as well.

Software and Performance

In your apps drawer, you’ll find your usual set of Google-set items including the Android Market, FM radio, Camera and Camcorder, and easy to use apps such as Gallery, Calculator,Music, Phone, and Peep for your Twitter activity. You’ve also got Slacker radio built in for some streaming music action, HTC’s Weather app for some excellent and totally simple GPS-location-based weather reports, and “My Device” which will give you, the new-to-smartphones user a full guide on how to get acquainted with your new device.

You’ll find that you’re able to run the simplest apps plus a few slightly-higher-functioning apps like Angry Birds without a hitch. Unfortunately the internal storage on this device is relatively low, and it’s not immediately apparent to brand NEW to Android users how to push their content over to their external memory, that being the 2GB microSD card that comes with the device. Once they DO figure out such a thing, then do the smart thing and upgrade to a much larger 32GB card, they’ll be doing just fine from that point forward.

As far as performance goes, you’ll not find the Wildfire S winning any contests, but the results are certainly OK for a 600Mhz single-core, that’s for sure.

Camera and Battery

The camera quality is OK, certainly no competition for the higher-range 8 megapixel cameras we’ve seen come out over the past few months. A 5-megapixel camera on the back of the device takes decent photos and 640×480 video at 24fps. Made for sharing, looks pretty good for day to day activities, not made for professional capture, if you know what I mean. Have look here:

Wrap-Up

This is THE perfect phone for a new Android user. Not only will they be treated to an easy to use interface with the fun extra bits HTC offers (such as the world-renowned weather widget, of course,) they’ll have a tiny screen with bright colors and relatively sharp picture to do it with. This device will both impress a new-to-smartphone user and make them wanting more Android in the future. Not only that, they’ll want to stick with HTC because of the ease in using that one single big time draw: the weather widget again! Customization is tuned directly to new users, and with such a compact device that’s not much bigger (and in some cases smaller) than feature phones on the market today, they’ll want to continue sizing up.

In addition, those who’ve used Android in the past and want to down-size for one reason or another would be wise to take a peek at the Wildfire S. Because I’ve got more than one Android device sitting around here for testing, i plan on using this little beast for short trips and those that I don’t plan on being out of the house for more than a couple hours. Email, Twitter, Google+, Facebook, photos, video, and all the rest of my basic communications work on here just fine, leaving only big-screen interactions like video chat (this device doesn’t have a front-facing camera) and video viewing for the bigger guns. Well done, HTC, what a cutie!

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY Root and Unlocked Bootloader Coming Soon

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:43 AM PDT

We aren’t sure how active the entire Xperia Play development community is but we did hear it will be getting CyanogenMod 7 soon so that is a start. Some new breakthroughs over on XDA are showing that users soon might be able to root and unlock the bootloader on the gaming phone.

The Xperia Play hasn’t received a lot of love since it first launched but you can read out full review here. Our man Chris Davies also reviewed it for SlashGear. If you look at the image above it appears the dev community has been able to unlock the bootloader, a good sign indeed.

Then the image above shows that all important superuser app, as well as the highly popular Titanium backup. Soon Xperia Play users can backup all that game save data and flash custom roms and Cyanogenmod 7 all while being able to restore their precious gaming sessions. Sony did provide an unlock tool for many of their devices but the Verizon and other Xperia Play’s did not get the join that party so now its up to the developers. For all the details make sure to follow along at the XDA thread in the via below.
