| Motorola Droid Bionic Teasing Speedtest Results on 4G LTE? Posted: 09 Aug 2011 11:24 AM PDT I know we have seen our share of Droid Bionic pictures as of late, but this most recent photo might just reveal something even better. What we are seeing is a photo of the Droid Bionic running a speedtest.net benchmark and scoring pretty amazing results. While the image is cut off and we can’t prove if this is 4G LTE or Wi-Fi — don’t forget that the Bionic is the first 4G LTE device to also have a dual-core processor and that might be helping out speeds tremendously.
Before you all start getting super excited I do want to mention that my Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a Verizon 4G LTE dual-core device and I don’t get anywhere near those speeds. So either the Bionic is rocking some magical 4G powers or this might in fact be a teaser and running on Wi-Fi rather than 4G. The leaker (yoda) also mentions upwards of 15 hours of battery life and that is great to hear considering other LTE devices were struggling in that department. Pictures of this device continue to leak and with this mornings news of a 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy S II spotted I have a feeling many of you might be up in the air as to which device you should purchase, it’s a hard choice I know. While I don’t want to immediately say this picture is a fake I’m just not seeing those speeds on my 4G LTE tablet so I’m a little unsure on what I think. Either way the Droid Bionic will still be a blazing fast device so don’t let a few speedtest results sway your choice too much. [via Phandroid] ) |
| YouTube for Android Updated with some new features Posted: 09 Aug 2011 10:57 AM PDT That little application and website a few of you just might know called YouTube was updated yesterday night for the first time in a while. The initial update notification hit users phones but no update was actually available but it appears that is because a few different versions were all updated. I didn’t get any updates on my Tablet but a few phones all got the new YouTube so that could be part of the confusion.
The new version of YouTube is v2.2.14 and brings with it some much needed changes and enhancements I think everyone can appreciate. You can now edit the title, description, and privacy info right on your mobile device. They have also fixed up the user interface for when users are uploading videos. One of the bigger improvements is we can now create/edit/delete playlists on the go right from the app. As always the what’s new tab also suggests some performance enhancements and bug fixes so hopefully those that were having problems in the past can be good to go with the new YouTube. Yesterday Google also suggested they are updating the voice search application but Google’s own blog on that update was quickly removed, hopefully we see that update coming soon too. | ASUS Transformer Accessories and Dock Appear on Amazon [New] Posted: 09 Aug 2011 10:30 AM PDT Some new accessories and docks for the highly popular ASUS Eee Pad Transformer have been spotted on Amazon Germany. What apears to be a nice desk dock with added USB ports, as well as some HDMI adapters and more. This is most likely a move to provide accessories to those that don’t want to buy the expensive keyboard dock but would still like options.
You can see our review of the Transformer here where we go over the transformation into a laptop via the accessory keyboard dock for a better idea. If that isn’t something you’ve been wanting to buy then maybe these new leaked photos show something you’ll want.
Adding two additional USB ports, the proprietary jack, and a 3.5mm headphone jack the dock gives users more options, they didn’t add a HDMI as the tablet already has that. Most likely using your own keyboards and mice will work great with this new dock and it should come in around $40 dollars according to sources. Other accessories are also listed that will provide an additional USB port or micro SD for those in need of even more accessibility options. Device Info

| Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Sales Blocked in Europe Thanks to Apple Posted: 09 Aug 2011 10:01 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which launched in Britain and other parts of Europe last week might be seeing itself pulled from the shelves soon, and not from buyers. Recent court rulings from a German court granted Apple a preliminary injunction against Samsung and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stopping sales and marketing both. The Tab 10.1 was the best selling tablet ever in Europe when it launched compared to every other tablet except for the iPad 2.
This entire thing was started back when Samsung was sued by Apple over the look and feel of the Galaxy S products, then Samsung quickly started fighting back and the entire thing has continued to spiral out of control. While Apple might not be winning completely here in the US things are looking a bit better in other countries and parts of the world with even sales being somewhat halted in Australia. This story is still developing this morning but initial reports are suggesting that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 distribution and marketing will be completely halted across the entire European Union except for the Netherlands, and Apple has a separate lawsuit that is ongoing there as we speak. It is worth noting that while Samsung can appeal the judgement, the injunction and stoppage of sales will continue in the meantime. For now things aren’t looking to good over in the EU for Samsung. An appeal could and most likely will take an upwards of 4 weeks or more, and will be seen by the same judge. While this entire story is still developing feel free to check back shortly, we are reaching out to Samsung and should have more details shortly. For now see what Google has to say about all these lawsuits. [via Telepgraph] ) |
| T-Mobile Aims Android Tablet Rentals at Angel Stadium Posted: 09 Aug 2011 09:35 AM PDT This summer T-Mobile has begun offering tablet rentals at the Los Angeles Angels home stadium for an “enhanced experience” for baseball fans across the board. Fans can rent one of two tablets at one of two locations in the stadium, one of these locations being an actual fully-functional T-Mobile mobile store, their tablet choices being the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 7-inch or the newer LG G-Slate with 3D capabilities and a dual-core processor from NVIDIA. I think you know which one we’d choose. Both tablets are available for rent for the whole baseball game for $10.
As you’ll soon see the T-Mobile spokesperson note, these tablets play host to a set of pre-loaded apps that include interactive apps that work with the game itself, like a speed test for pitches, stat apps for players, and of course a full program which you’d otherwise be paying $4 for in its paper form. Of course then you’ll not be able to keep said program, but what do you do with it anyways once you get home? It’ll end up in the trash, man, littering! Of course with either tablet, you’ve got the ability to download apps from the Android Market using your own account which you can log in with once you’ve got the tablet in hand AND you’ve got a full speed connection to T-Mobile’s mobile network inside the park which we hope very much would be working at full speed for said promotion. The original Galaxy Tab will only be able to enjoy a basic range of apps made for single-core devices while the G-Slate will of course get full access to the NVIDIA Tegra Zone selection of apps as well. Whether or not fans will be wanting to play Pinball HD during the game or not is up to them – maybe for the kids bored by the third inning? [via AllThingsD] ) |
| Android Tablet Coming Soon from Tribune Co Posted: 09 Aug 2011 09:09 AM PDT It appears that while baseball stadiums may be adopting the tablet situation for an “enhanced experience,” newspaper groups may want to get in on the party as well. Chicago-owned Tribune Co. is reportedly working on a touchscreen tablet that it aims to market to its newspaper subscribers, a tablet which will feature a modified version of Google’s mobile operating system Android. This tablet will also of course feature custom applications made by and for each hometown newspaper it will be targeted to.
Tribune Co owns several daily newspapers including the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun, and the Los Angeles Times, amongst 23 television stations as well. According to CNN, “more than half a dozen” current and former Tribune employees have interviewed with the news giant about the tablet and have requested anonymity for fear of losing their jobs or souring relations with their former employer. Apparently this new tablet will be offered for free OR at a highly subsidized price for those who sign up for an extended subscription to one of their newspapers AND a wireless data plan with a carrier who would be partnering with the paper. The national media company has been in talks with Samsung Electronics “and others” to build the tablets, and hopes to use the initiative to bring themselves out of bankruptcy. Spokespersons from Samsung as well as the Tribune have declined to comment. At the moment, several Tribune newspapers have iOS-specific apps out on the market, but few to none of them are working for Android. Those “familiar with the project” have said that this project is “Eddy’s baby,” referring to Eddy Hartenstein, Tribune Co’s chief executive, founder of DirecTV, board member of Sirius XM Radio, SanDisk, and semiconductor group Broadcom. Hartenstein is also of course the CEO of the LA Times, this leading us to believe that an LA Times tablet might be in the works. In similar news, the Philadelphia Media Network also has plans to sell “deeply discounted” Android tablets featuring apps for its Daily News and Inquirer newspapers. Spokesman Mark Block says they’ll be starting this initiative by selling 2,000 as early as next month. [via CNN] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy S II LTE rears shiny head in Korea with Celox codename Posted: 09 Aug 2011 07:53 AM PDT A new rumor has popped up surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S II that hails from South Korea. Apparently, the image you see here is the LTE version of the smartphone and it is said to be going by the codename Celox. Along with the photos, we also have some specs for the smartphone to peruse as well. It is said to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor.
The smartphone also has a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with WVGA resolution. The handset offers 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot supporting up to 32GB more storage. The smartphone rocks Android Gingerbread and a 1750mAh battery. The key feature here though is that the smartphone has support for 800MHz LTE with up to 100Mbps downloads. Celox sports an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera as well. Sadly, with the tip showing 800MHz LTE and AT&T and Verizon using 700MHz LTE the chance of this heading stateside are slim. We can hope that a version with 700MHz support shows up later, this would be a fantastic smartphone for fans in the US that want a 4G device. [via Engadget] ) |
| Verizon moves to kill illegal tethering on hacked phones Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:12 AM PDT Verizon is following in the footsteps of AT&T and has announced that tethering on hacked smartphones will not be tolerated anymore. Verizon is out to stop the people that are tethering their smartphones using unofficial apps like MyWi from consuming more data than Verizon thinks is fair. The carrier wants the illegal tethering users to fork over more loot for official tethering support.
The good news if you are one of the Verizon users enjoying unofficial tethering is that Verizon is much cheaper than AT&T. Whereas AT&T is forcing users that illegally tethered to pay $45 monthly Verizon users can get official tethering for $20 monthly. When the user tries to use the unofficial tethering app on their smartphone, they will be redirected to another webpage. The page the users will land on is a Verizon site that offers the $20 tethering plan. I don’t think this is any surprise, once one major wireless carrier tries something others generally follow. What do you think, will this make you pay for tethering or will you just continue to use unofficial apps? [via Forbes] ) |
| My Vodafone app for Android released: Track use, WiFi hotspots & roaming Posted: 09 Aug 2011 01:24 AM PDT Vodafone UK has released a new Android app, allowing subscribers to not only keep track of their accounts without ringing through to customer care, but also locate the nearest free WiFi hotspot. The My Vodafone app shows your current usage of minutes, messaging and data, and how close to your tariff limits you are.
There’s also information on the tariff itself, including contract end date, when you can expect the bill to arrive, and for roughly how much it will be. Those using their phone abroad can also keep an eye on any roaming charges they might be racking up. Finally, there’s a map to show any nearby BT Openzone WiFi hotspots, access to which is bundled with many of Vodafone’s plans. You’ll need an Android 1.6 device or higher to run the app, and it’s worth noting that the data isn’t updated in real-time so what it says on-screen may not be the exact state of your bill. You can download My Vodafone from the Android Market. ) |
| Motorola Admiral, Samsung Epic 4G Touch, and HTC EVO Design 4G Leaked Posted: 08 Aug 2011 11:06 PM PDT It’s that time again ladies and gentlemen, time to trust the word of a dude with a single black and white graphic. This particular graphic was passed to Engadget sometime in the night on August 8th, 2011, and points toward three new devices to be released on WiMAX in the very near future. The first of these is a very obvious version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, that being the Epic 4G Touch, the next being a next-gen HTC device by the name of HTC EVO Design 4G, the last being the only one of three to not tote the 4G tag, this one being the Motorola Admiral – a mystery device to be sure.
First we’ve got the Samsung Galaxy S II variant which is very likely to be sitting right beside the Samsung Epic 2, a QWERTY slider version of the Galaxy S II. The Samsung Within, as it’s been tipped, will likely be replaced by the name Epic 4G Touch, this being the device closely related to the Galaxy S II we already know and love. Our original Epic 4G review can be found over on SlashGear while our sister-site SlashGear strikes again with a full review of the Samsung Galaxy S II as it stands abroad today. Next is the HTC EVO Design 4G, a device that is more than likely a slightly less-expensive version of the HTC EVO 3D, a device which, of course, has the ability to capture and display 3D media without the assistance of 3D glasses. The HTC EVO 3D review we’ve got will show you how neat the 3D action really is: check it out and note that the HTC EVO Design 4G we’re pretty sure is aka the HTC Kingdom, a device we now believe to be essentially the same as the HTC EVO 3D save two big differences. These differences include a complete lack of a 3D camera, (aka there’s only ONE lens on the back and it’s 5-megapixels strong,) and there’s only a single-core Qualcomm processor clocked at 1.2GHz. Of course you can also see this device being called the HTC Hero 4G, so who knows? Finally there’s the Motorola Admiral, a device which we’ve got essentially no information about at all. One might guess, on the other hand, that given recent releases by Motorola, this will be a dual-core processor-toting device with a full QWERTY keyboard, something rather similar to what we’ve just seen in the DROID 3. What do you think? This all seem reasonable to you? [via Engadget] ) |
| T-Mobile LG G-Slate Android 3.1 Update Rolling out Today Posted: 08 Aug 2011 03:26 PM PDT We haven’t heard much from LG and their G-Slate since it was launched back in April but the 8.9″ 3D capable device is still chugging along. In case users and owners were wondering about future upgrades I’m happy to report that the LG G-Slate should start seeing the OTA update to Android 3.1 Honeycomb today, or early tomorrow. Basically I’d just start hitting “check for updates” right now if I owned one.
For such an awesome device it hasn’t been seen in the news as of late. The G-Slate is a 8.9″ NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core tablet with dual cameras on the rear for 3D. I guess the complaint is the 3D requires glasses for viewing on the device unless the recently seen LG Optimus 3D. We were able to get plenty hands-on time with the G-slate so check out our full review.
Back to the update, clearly stated above in yellow the G-Slate should start seeing this any time now but we’ve yet to hear any reports of users actually receiving the update. According to the LG Forums it will be today or sometime tomorrow so I guess we will have to wait and see. Now my first question would be when will it get the Android 3.2 update that brings zoom and a few other helpful features? As many tablets already have been updated to that like a few weeks ago. The G-Slate is a little behind the times but hopefully gets caught up soon. Device Info

| LG Flip II Dual-screen Android Phone Spotted Again Posted: 08 Aug 2011 03:07 PM PDT Recently a few more pictures have leaked out for the LG Flip II or so we are calling it. This is a dual-screen slider headed to T-Mobile by LG that not only has dual screens but also a hardware keyboard. It’s a different take on design that is for sure, but I could see developers cooking up some cool and unique features for that extra screen real estate.
While many are mentioning this device for the first time we got wind of it (and better pictures) back in June and you can see those here. While we still don’t have many details about the phone the picture above and below reveals plenty about the device. The QWERTY keyboard looks nice at decently spaced given the lack of room with that screen down below.
Looking at that last image it may be running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread but we don’t know for sure, and have a 3.5″ display with what looks like a 1 or 1.5″ display for the other. I sort of like the idea of having my most used applications neatly on the screen below, or maybe some other crazy cool uses once developers get cracking with the extra screen space. The LG Flip II is still a mystery so until we hear more you’ll have to just enjoy the photos. [via PocketNow] ) |

| Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Makes a Stop at the FCC Posted: 08 Aug 2011 01:49 PM PDT Back in June we heard Lenovo was planning two Android tablets and since then we’ve seen the both a few times. One being the Lenovo K1 Tablet already released and reviewed here, and the other is the ThinkPad Tablet aimed more at business users. Today the Lenovo ThinkPad tablet hit the FCC and things appear right on track.
Back in July we were able to get some hands-on video of the ThinkPad and were pleasantly surprised. The device will come with Android 3.1 Honeycomb, a NVIDIA dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, as well as a bright and crisp 10.1″ IPS display and more. Lenovo is aiming this more for business users and will have docks and keyboard accessories to go along with it. The Lenovo ThinkPad should hit stores around August 23rd so seeing it clear the FCC today is the final step in the process and looks to be right on time with that late August release date. Lenovo has pre-installed tons of useful applications on their devices like Netflix and Documents-to-Go so they should be ready to roll right out of the box. Last we heard it should retail around $479 — Will you be considering this tablet or another offering in this huge market? [via Liliputing] ) |
| LG Thrill 3D Shows Up in Best Buy Ad Posted: 08 Aug 2011 12:19 PM PDT The LG Thrill 4G is their latest entry into the Android world headed for AT&T. The phone is a glasses-free 3D powerhouse much like the EVO 3D and I’ve always wondered why they didn’t include the term 3D in the title for the device. Although it was recently delayed til late August a new Best Buy ad showed up making us think it may end up launching sooner.
We recently reviewed the LG Thrill 4G and you can see that here. After looking at the recently leaked Best Buy ad pictured above you can clearly see it listed as the LG Thrill 3D. Are they changing the name at launch to better represent one of the devices main features — being 3D? Or is this just how Best Buy has it listed in their ads. Originally it was slated for an early August release and for just $99 but we haven’t heard anything since the delay. I’m hoping the delay was simply for something like this name change and not any hardware issues as no one wants to watch another LG G2x situation. This ad doesn’t tell us much but could be the reason for the delay, we should be hearing a release date and official pricing again soon. Device Info

| HTC Inspire 4G Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Available Now Posted: 08 Aug 2011 11:57 AM PDT After a bit of confusion regarding updates for a few HTC phones AT&T recently stated all 2011 Android phones would get Gingerbread and they even outlined the Inspire 4G starting soon. That was correct because the Inspire 4G OTA upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is available now for OTA download.
A few users are already reporting the update has hit their handsets and the update should only take around 10 minutes. Today HTC also updated the Infuse 4G Support page with links to download the update manually if users would like to head that direction as well. The update to Gingerbread is available now so go ahead and check for updates. If you’ve been considering the Infuse 4G here is our full review of the huge 4.5″ display packing Android phone. While it is recommended users just wait for the OTA update to hit their handset if you’d like to manually update yourself the download is available from HTC at the source link below.
