Google Videos App Hacked to allow root users to stream movies

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 11:19 AM PDT

This has been discussed more than a few times since we first found out the Google Videos App would not allow rooted users to watch rental movies on their devices. For more details on that you can check this story out. Just yesterday Google updated the video app to allow streaming and playback of rented movies on FroYo and Gingerbread devices too. We have good news for those rooted users though.

The developers over at SDX have been hard at work, we can now use a modded version of the app where they have removed the root check so all devices will be able to enjoy movie playback. This version should also work with all supported devices running Android 2.2 and above so those on older Android are also in luck.

As always make sure to backup or save the previous version just to be safe, otherwise uninstall and install the new modded APK and you are good to go. For the few not wanting to use the modded APK and have rooted devices and rented movies didn’t play, you can also go to the YouTube app and watch them through “rentals” in YouTube as Google has yet to implement the root check into it — just a tip! Head on to the source for more details.

Verizon Wireless Intros $20 Plan with 300MB Data for select regions

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:43 AM PDT

While a good deal is a good deal and not to be passed up this seems more like a gap between a real data plan and those feature phone plans. Today Verizon Wireless is launching a new back to school data plan for only $20 with 300mb of data connectivity when bundled with a new voice plan. The odd part is this is not widespread and only available starting in select Verizon regions, this may be a test run to start things off.

Starting tomorrow, the promotion will be available to subscribers in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and North Carolina from August 18th through September 30th. From the looks of things this applies to all available phones from the 4G enabled Android devices to even one of those i things some people opt to use instead.

While the regions that do or don’t qualify seem a little odd a lower priced data plan to bridge the gap from more expensive plans is a welcome change. This would be a great plan for younger students or first time smartphone buyers that are just getting into an Android device. Many light users stay under 300mb a month but I’d make sure I followed my usage so I didn’t get any fee’s.

For all current Android phones available on Verizon make sure to check out of device database at device.ac or to make things easier here is the Verizon Portal.

HTC Sensation OTA Update for 2.3.4 Gingerbread Hitting Europe

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:11 AM PDT

New reports this morning are suggesting the update to the late Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread is currently underway for the European model. The update hit a few unbranded Germany roaming HTC Sensation phones but should be rolling out to other carriers throughout the next week or so. As far as I know there hasn’t been any word regarding an update for the Sensation but this could be a good time to include some fixes and update to the latest OS version.

Folks that have received the update are saying it was around 41mb and was a fairly fast and easy process, as well as bringing the phone software version up to 1.45.401.2. We are still waiting more details but it appears to bring GTalk video chat to the device as a standard option instead of using things like Qik or other options.

As always with OTA updates you’ll find a few software tweaks, bug fixes and some performance enhancements so hopefully this update will start hitting other carriers soon. We haven’t heard from HTC regarding the update but most likely it should start rolling out to other carriers and possible other regions too. The T-Mobile Sensation 4G here in the states is still on 2.3.3 and I know I’ve had a few readers ask when it will receive 2.3.4 so hopefully this clears up things a little bit as its already started.

Devs claim payments from Google aren’t matching Amazon Market app sales

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 08:11 AM PDT

There are some Android developers that aren’t happy campers. Apparently, some of the devs have taken to the Google Market forums to complain that the payments they are receiving aren’t matching up with the sales of their apps. The issue isn’t widespread apparently with only a few complaining that their checks are short.

The difference between the reported sales of the apps and the amount of the checks is apparently large. One of the devs that has the issue said that less than half the apps that had actually sold during the period were paid out. A bit of digging turned up a possible reason for the light payments.

Apparently, all the devs that were affected has apps purchased on the web store for the Android Market. The thought is that the purchased made on the web store and then pushed to the devices aren't being tallied up on the checks. Google noted that it is aware of the issue and is working to fix it.

Millennial data shows Android had twice the number of ad impressions as iOS in Q2

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:59 AM PDT

According to the latest figures from Millennial Media, Android had twice as many ad impressions as iOS devices in Q2. Android alone generated 53% of all mobile add impressions for the quarter. Apple saw the impressions generated by iOS devices increase 4% from Q1 2011. The overall portion of the market that Apple has is 27%.

However, Millennial does note that with the launch of the iPhone 5 expected in Q3 it expects to see growth from Apple. When Millennial looks at the devices generating the most impressions Apple is the leader with 30.76% of all the ads viewed. Samsung is the second place with 14.94%.

For Q2 the most common ads served were retail and restaurant ads. However, there was noted to be a marked growth in ads for pharmaceuticals and finance as well as automotive and entertainment ads. Of the devices that generated ad impressions in Q2 2011, 60% of the devices were touchscreen enabled. Touch/QWERTY hybrids were 15% of the impressions and QWERTY only were 14%.

Samsung Galaxy S II official US launch on August 29

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:40 AM PDT

Samsung has scheduled a press event on August 29, 2011, in New York City, and judging by the conspicuous “II” on the invitation sent to Android Community, it looks like the Galaxy S II is finally ready to make its US debut. The “major product announcement” the invite promises is one that has been much-anticipated by US Android-lovers: the Galaxy S II has already set sales records for Samsung in Europe and Asia.

In fact, Samsung has had the Galaxy S II on sale outside the US for several months now – we reviewed the European version back in April - and it’s already on sale in Canada, too. You can still see the appeal: a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera with Full HD 1080p video recording still leaves the Galaxy S II at the top of its game.

We’ll be headed to New York for all the details on August 29, when hopefully Samsung will tell us exactly when the GSII will go on sale and for how much. Meanwhile, if you’re in the UK remember we’re giving away two Galaxy S II units courtesy of Vodafone!

Research firm claims Android Market is driven by very active developers

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Data from an app rating and discovery company called Mobilewalla has surfaced that digs into the Android Market and found some interesting details about developers for Android. According to the metrics firm, the Android market is led by a number of very prolific app markers. The company also found that the apps on Android also see more updates per app than apps on the App Store at Apple sees.

I am sure that has to do with the fact that developers on the Android Market can update and publish as they see fit whereas Apple forces all updates through an approval process. The data the company published shows that in May Android devs that have created more than 100 apps and are responsible for more than 53% of the apps on the Market.

On the App Store, by contrast developers that have more than 100 apps to their credit only represent 23% of all apps. The implication is that the fast growth of the Android market means that it is driven by a smaller set of developers that are pushing out lots of new apps.

Box.net updates Android cloud app with tablet support

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:16 AM PDT

The cloud storage choices are growing quickly out there and if you are a fan of the Box.net cloud platform that has been around for a while for sharing mobile data on the go using smartphones the app has been updated. The new version of the Box app has been updated and it now supports Android tablets. The app was only for Android phones before and this is the first time for tablet support.

The company said that its smartphone app for Android devices had been downloaded 100,000 times already. The service has a free trial offer and it guarantees 99.9% uptime. That means you won’t have to worry about the service being offline when you need it. Box offers contact management, the ability to share files securely, and the ability to sync files from the desktop.

The mobile access allows you to share documents with coworkers and friends on the go and it lets the user share folders and files with a simple tap. The app is available for iOS devices and the new update supports the Playbook tablet as well. It also has an online workspace for editing documents.

Samsung gets court date for attempt to overturn Galaxy Tab ban in Europe

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 05:07 AM PDT

It has been a few days now since German courts banned the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet in most of Europe. Samsung and Apple have been fighting a legal battle there over Apple’s allegations that Samsung is copying its design for the Galaxy Tab series. The courts in Germany set a date for Samsung’s appeal to try to get the ban overturned. The date is set for August 25 and a decision will likely come a few weeks after the court date.

Apple is also attempting to ban the import and sale of the Galaxy Tab tablets in other areas too. Apple filed an injunction with a court in The Hague reports Reuters that seeks to stop the Samsung gear from being sold in the Netherlands. That filing is also seeking to stop the import of the Samsung products into the EU via the Netherlands.

The judge in that case is going to deliver his ruling on September 15 and if he rules for Apple, the injunction would go into effect on October 13. The judge presiding over the case in the Netherlands is Edger Brinkman. Samsung has filed suits of its own against Apple.

Dell Streak 5 axed

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:09 AM PDT

Dell has quietly killed the Streak 5, its 5-inch Android tablet/smartphone hybrid. Confirmed on the company’s site - with the message “Goodbye, Streak 5. It’s been a great ride” – the decision follows various discounting drives on the tablet as well as stock shortages.

The Streak 5 was already over a year old, having been initially released in the UK on June 4 2010. It arrived with Android 1.6, which Dell had reskinned, but was later – and after some delays – upgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo. Despite vocal support from a minority subset of users, the Streak 5 failed to achieve mainstream success, perhaps because of its “tweener” scale – falling in-between a phone, the functionality of which it offered, and a tablet – and non-tablet-centric OS.

Dell still offers the Streak 7, it’s 7-inch slate, and is expected to release further Android tablets in the near future. They will likely run Honeycomb, Google’s tablet-specific OS, rather than the phone build that the Streak relied on.

Motorola DROID Bionic Spotted at Verizon Store

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:59 PM PDT

I know we have heard and seen plenty of the all might Motorola Droid Bionic the past few weeks but they just keep on coming. It recently cleared the FCC, and was even caught on camera running some 4G speedtests. Now the Bionic has been spotted at a Verizon store being held by a Motorola Rep and she even had a laptop dock for it too.

Tonight these pictures leaked over on Howard Forums from a Verizon employee stating a Motorola rep came to his stand welding the mysterious device in their hand. We can’t really call it mysterious because we’ve seen it a thousand times so maybe I’ll just say illusive as this device has been able to illude everyone for months on end and was recently delayed but that is nothing new.

The newbie in the photo above is the laptop dock accessory that was also being carried by the rep from Motorola. We have been expecting these types of accessories but this appears to be the first one we’ve seen unless its the same one the Atrix uses. I know everyone has been patiently waiting for the Bionic and all these leaks over and over are probably making a few of you impatient, but it will be here soon enough.

Is anyone sick of hearing about the Bionic yet? I’ll start preaching and waiting for the HTC Vigor as it has my full attention off of the Bionic for now.

News360 for Android Tablets 2.0 Update Hands-On [Video]

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 05:23 PM PDT

What we’re getting here today is the newest version of one of our favorite news apps, that being News360, one we called the App of the Week a few weeks ago, now in its second full version, version 2.0, one that introduces the social networking world into the tablet in a very large way for the iOS version and a soon to be large way for Android. The biggest change in the Android version of this application at the moment is the instant access to news videos. Right alongside tabs for your regular news feed at the awesome 360 view of images linking to news stories is a Videos tab that’ll allow you to check out the news in purely video form.

The interface for this application is fiddled with a bit, certainly no taking anything away from the amount of control you have over what News360 is calling their “reverse search” method of bringing content to the user. Much in the same way Google is attempting to connect people with the news in it’s “Sparks” interface in Google+, their new social networking site, News360 has you create your own categories in which they’ll supply you with news. Subject matter is all you really have to enter in if you like, and if you don’t want to do such a thing, you can follow the categories News360 already has prepared for you. All of this is prepared in several different ways, it being your choice in the end how you view the news through this diverse app for Android.

As far as the new web-based look at the app and the iOS version go, it’s a slightly different situation. Check out the images provided in the gallery below and you’ll see how social networking integration is just slightly above what it is in the Android app thus far. This slight advancement along with the fact that it’s still sort of rare to see a blog site such as Android Community in the mix are two updates we hope to see made in the next wave for Android tablets as well as handsets – Google Reader included!

ipad01 ipad02 ipad03 web01 web02 web03

Beyond that, this app is still a mightily magnificent vision for each of the main platforms, and yes, if you’ve got an HTML5-able web browser on any device (or so it seems,) you’re able to run the web-based version of News360, a force to be reckoned with all on its own. Check out our full review of the original edition of News360 for Tablets as well if you’d like to see a slightly older version of the app.

Finally, remember that this app is [totally free on the Android Market] right this moment. Go grab it.

Crazy Colors Live Wallpaper gives your Android some excitement

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 03:41 PM PDT

Make your Android phone or tablet come to life with this awesome live wallpaper I’ve found for you all. Today I’ll be featuring Crazy Colors LWP. This is another one of my recent favorites from the excellent developer maxelus.net and it really makes your phone or tablet almost come to life. The quick and crazy movements in color gives your device some excitement and you can control the colors with the touch of your finger.

It’s almost as if the colors are flying toward you then reversing away almost giving it a 3D type effect and it actually is really neat. I’ve tested this both on my 3.1 Tablet and my HTC Sensation and it works great on both. The colors are vibrant and sharp, as well as completely customizable for your convenience. Now I’m having a hard time deciding on my new favorite but it is still between this and Vortex Galaxy LWP but I’m leaning towards the latter.

You can also slide the colors around on your screen to watch them go crazy but soon enough you’ll want to let go and just let it do its own crazy thing. The colors do rotate from being fast and in your face being all lively to calming down and becoming smaller almost like it’s off in the distance and really makes for a good change-up. Here is a video for a better idea.

Crazy Colors LWP

While the video may give you an idea you just need to download it and try it yourself to see how awesome it really is. After all it is free so whats the concern right? As always I try to pick an awesome yet totally free LWP and today’s is no different just as I’ve said. It is free and available right now in the Android Market. Feel free to click or scan the QR Code below to instantly head to the market for download. Enjoy!

Google Contacts FCC Regarding Microsoft Leaking Confidential Android Source Code

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 03:09 PM PDT

It appears that Google has another knife to pull on Microsoft, this time regarding Android source code, Google this week asking a judge with the US International Trade Commission to block a Microsoft “expert witness” in a Motorola lawsuit because this witness had “highly confidential source code” leaked to him by Microsoft. It’s not the least confusing situation in these patent posts we’ve been posting these past few months, that’s for sure, and I’m certain we’ll go through it again by the end of this post.

The motion filed this week with the ITC, Google has requested that the court bar the so-called expert Dr Robert Stevenson from testifying on Microsoft’s behalf because Microsoft revealed TO Stevenson some source code Android and Microsoft had agreed to keep secret. Google’s statement noted the following set of sentences making the ruling clear:

"The protective order governing confidentiality in this investigation explicitly requires that Microsoft disclose to Google any consultant or expert seeking access to Google confidential business information or highly confidential source code before [Google's emphasis] allowing a consultant or expert to review such information so that Google has an opportunity to object prior to disclosure,"

NOTE: for further information on this and other patent cases surrounding it, see Google Speaks Out Against Patent Attacks on Android

Microsoft was to give “prior written notice” to Google about giving confidential information to Dr Stevenson for testimony in the case. The case, as it stands today, is between Microsoft and Motorola, Microsoft suing Motorola so that they might force them to pay patent royalties for patents Microsoft owns that are related to technology used in Android. This is part of the wave of patent cases unfolding over the past few months in which Microsoft is seeking royalties on every device produced with Android aboard.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich Screenshots Leaked?

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:22 PM PDT

What we have just seen is said to be first screenshots of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the next version of Google’s OS. While this entire thing is just breaking and we haven’t had the time to look ever them closely things are looking pretty tasty from here. These appear to be early beta builds of Android on the Google Nexus S. Some early reports from RootzWiki are claiming these are 100% legit and real screenshots but we will just let you decide.

The leakster claims this is a very early build that in not very stable and is still very much a work in progress. They even mention it wont be coming out this month or the next but we already have been planning on a November or Thanksgiving time frame. There is plenty of changes as well as a entire new color scheme. Gmail has been redesigned and more. We are now seeing pictures also leaked to Android Police looking very similar so this could indeed be the real deal.

According to the leak to WootzWiki there is plenty of new and exciting changes so I’m going to post them all below for you to see what they now know.

-Blue Themed
-Camera has built in panorama mode
-Will launch with Google Shopper and NFC Enabled devices will be able to utilize those features
-Gmail is all rethemed and updated
-Nexus Prime gets it first (expected) then other devices will follow after
-Not too many changes, just UI things, don’t think requirements are set too high for year old devices to run it
-The little icon in the bottom right, looks like a tray with multiple apps in it (Like Honeycomb app switching)
-Google search bar embedded on very top like Honeycomb
-Apps/Widgets launcher a lot like Honeycomb
-This release is still very early, notice the theming of the power tray

While we are excited to see all of this it does make us wonder. In the Wootzwiki picture everything has been rethemed even the icons up top and the colors are all blue, yet the power bar widget is still green, but that could just be not finished yet so who knows. I was hoping to see a Android 2.4 or maybe 3.5 in there so we knew what the next version would be. It appears this sneaky prankster or Google themselves have still not decided what they will be calling the next version of Android. We do see build number is IRK36B.

We know this isn’t a lot, but it’s better than nothing right? With so much of these photos being blacked out to protect the identity of the leak I’m starting to think it may in fact be the real deal. These are quite possibly the very first look on Android 2.4, 3.5, or 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or whatever they will call it. More pictures below.

Google Videos App Now Works on Gingerbread and Froyo Devices

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:10 PM PDT

Google’s Videos app was announced and released for the Motorola XOOM back at Google I/O in May, letting you rent and watch movies on the tablet, as well as on your computer. Watching it on your phone was promised, but the app wasn’t available. Until today that is. Videos has been updated in the Market and is now available for many Froyo and Gingerbread devices.

Google’s Videos app, released today for phones, lets you watch rented videos from the Android Market, as well as the videos you have on your phone. As you can see above the app is pretty sparse. There are two different screens, one displaying your rented movies and another showing the videos on your phone, with a link to the Movies section of the Android Market in the corner of both.

Renting works much the same as with tablets, and while we haven’t been able to confirm it, presumably downloading the movies will be prohibited on rooted phones as it was on rooted tablets. The work around for this has already been available on phones, which is to watch the movie on Youtube.

Watching, and sorting through your own videos in the app is a bit nicer than digging through the gallery where there are no labels though. Unfortunately, since I’m running the pre-beta version of CyanogenMod 7 for the Atrix, my videos aren’t playing with picture, but other than that the UI was a welcome improvement from the Gallery’s picture oriented design.

Whether the Movie renting feature is useful, we’ll leave up to you. The prices are a bit steep, especially with Netflix available now. If you aren’t up for renting movies, and don’t have another video playing app (outside the gallery), its a pretty handsome looking app without much else to get in the way of your video selection, but whether that’s worth the precious storage space on your phone is up to you.

Games for Google+: Angry Birds and more coming soon

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:36 PM PDT

Whoa, out of no where today Google has just announced Games for Google+ and already the first to tip the chart is the all mighty Angry Birds. This is one of the next big steps for Google to integrate another level of socialization into Google+ to better compete with the likes of Facebook. From Angry Birds, Decks of Cards, Diamand Dash and more. These will all be available soon for Google+.

Today Google is set to start the rollout of games to the popular Google+ Project. While I’m still not seeing anything on my own page this news was just barely released so it should be showing up shortly. The image above shows where to look as it will be there anytime now. Google is aiming to make games in G+ just as fun as during real life.

That means giving you control over when you see games, how you play them and with whom you share your experiences. Games in Google+ are there when you want them and gone when you don't.

I can see myself having a Gamers Circle any day now, right? We should be able to see game updates as well as invites and bragging all in our stream or selected circles. You’ll be able to easily share you high score, or how many times you’ve won. Bragging rights with who has the biggest farm coming soon to Google+ I can just imagine it already. I’ll be growing G+ farms and using Facebook for the soil. Google does mention for those not interested in games your streams will continue as usual and you wont be bothered so you can focus on what matters to you.

They have a decent list of games to start with from the developers that jumped aboard at the start and some of those include: Angry Birds, Bejeweled, Zynga Poker, Diamond Dash and a few mobsters type games like Crime City. This news just came out so be sure to keep checking here for updates as well as head over to Google+ to get started. I’m sure we will all be seeing plenty of invites over the next few weeks, that is for sure.

Update: A reader over at PCMag mentioned that in order to use Google+ Games the users must allow collection of some personal data by Google like G+ account information, email address, and even users in your circles. Here is the screenshot but we have no further details on that.

Gmail App Inverted with a Black Color Theme

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:15 PM PDT

In the world of Android we all love tweaking and hacking our devices so I figured I’d share this quick little theme with our readers. What we have here is another blacked out app theme but this time it’s for Gmail. What we have is the latest version 2.3.5 Gmail that has been inverted to be completely black and fits in nicely with the rest of Android, not to mention could help with battery life.

Last week I posted something very similar with the Google + App being treated with the same black theme and many users really enjoyed that. The developer does mention this should work for both rooted and non-rooted phones but I’d be careful if Gmail is your main email client as things could potentially have problems. Obviously doing a nandroid backup using something like Astro to backup Gmail and settings before continuing would probably be a good idea.

I have not tried this myself so I cannot guarantee how the process will go but from reading a few replies over at XDA most seem to be able to figure it out pretty easily and are enjoying their new Black Gmail client. I’d advise anyone wanting to try this to ask any questions in the forum first and make sure you know what you are doing and have any important settings or emails backed up just to be safe, but then you can always uninstall and just get the stock Gmail from the market if needed. Give it a try and feel free to report how it goes in the comment section below — Enjoy!

T-Mobile to Switch 200 MB Plan Overage Punishment from Throttling to Fees

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:55 PM PDT

It looks like T-Mobile may soon take a page out of AT&T’s book when it comes to data plans. A leaked image shows plans to move their 200 MB/month data plan off of throttling. Instead, T-Mo customers will start being charged overage fees should they exceed that 200 MB limit. For now, it only applies to the smaller plan, but is troubling news none the less.

T-Mobile has been pushing its smartphones with claims of the best values, and no overages as of late, but apparently it isn’t working out as well as they planned. Citing the need to “remain competitive,” T-Mobile has decided to take away “unlimited” data, from those currently on the plan that grants 200 MB of data before throttling kicks in.

Those who come close to their limit will receive a warning (at 180 MB), and going over will incur an overage fee of $0.10/MB ($10/GB). These overages will only be possible up to $30 a month for Classic plan customers, and $35 a month for Value plan customers. We would imagine existing customers will be grandfathered in, as other carriers have done, but the wording seems vague enough that we’re reluctant to say so.

There are several interesting things to note here though. First, the new plan will not throttle you until you’ve used 5 GB of data (which is technically unreachable with the overage limitations of $30 and $35). This means that customers will be able to squeeze out an extra GB or so of unthrottled data with this plan, if speed is more important than quantity.

Once again, this only applies to the 200 MB plan. T-Mobile’s 2GB/unlimited oxymoron plan will still give you as much data as you want, with a speed drop after 2GB of usage. With AT&T’s pending purchase of the pink provider, T-Mobile’s long term future is anything but certain, in the mean-time make sure you check with T-Mobile to confirm whether or not you’ll be grandfathered in to avoid overages.
