Samsung Hercules: a Samsung Galaxy S II with a massive 4.5-inch display

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Samsung Hercules: a Samsung Galaxy S II with a massive 4.5-inch displayLike the son of Zeus himself, the Samsung Hercules is a demigod of smartphones. This Galaxy S II variant is expected to debut in late September when it launches in North America. Beyond the larger-than-life 4.5-inch display is an eight-megapixel camera, Android 2.3 with TouchWiz 4.0, and four capacitive buttons.

According to PocketNow, the Samsung Hercules is powered by a Qualcomm processor clocked at 1.2 GHz (not Samsung's Exynos chip). In addition, 1 GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage come standard. At this point two carriers have been confirmed for delivery: T-Mobile USA and Telus in Canada. In fact, the phone was first spotted in the wild at a Samsung Mobile concert in Toronto.

MobileSyrup has come forward with several additional details from its time with the Hercules at a VIP event. The site believes this could be the first dual carrier 42 Mbps HSPA+ smartphone in Canada. The eight-megapixel camera is capable of capturing 1080p HD video and the front-facing camera is "possibly 2-megapixel". The site believes a Telus launch will arrive in the "back-to-school" time frame, but there's been no support evidence thus far.

DIY Android powered robot tank, complete with artillery

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 08:09 AM PDT

DIY Android powered robot tank, complete with artillery Prepare yourself for the future of Android-powered combat. Pictured to the right you'll see the world's first robot tank powered by an Android smartphone. According to the gadget's creator, Tamlyn, all you need is an Android smartphone and an IOIO board which connects the phone to the tank via USB.

As of late the craze in home-brewed gadgetry has been Arduino. Rather than following this route Tamlyn went with an IOIO board for several reasons: pure Java API, USB built-in, cheaper and more IO pins than necessary. If you're the current owner of a Nexus One or HTC Desire, the DIY Android powered tank reportedly works perfectly — success with other Android smartphones may vary.

Ready to see the BB-gun equipped robot tank in action? Have at it. If you're ready to build your own robot tank then hit the link below for the complete step-by-step tutorial compliments of Tamlyn.

Panasonic, Sony and Samsung inch closer to active 3D standard

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Panasonic, Sony and Samsung inch closer to active 3D standardThree major players in TVs are determined to create a new technology standard for 3D active glasses. In conjunction with active 3D glasses manufacturing company XPAND 3D, the manufacturers are hoping the new standard will fuel wider adoption of 3D sets in the home. One pair of glasses that works on Panasonic, Sony and Samsung TVs — where do we sign up?

Standardization of glasses among 3D TVs is currently non-existent. While Samsung uses Bluetooth to pair its glasses and TVs, Sony and Panasonic rely on infrared waves. The end result is a line of proprietary glasses for each vendor. The proposed active 3D standard would change the game.

Using multiple types of infrared protocols, including those proprietary to Samsung and Sony, the active 3D glasses will work seamlessly across all three manufacturers' sets. In addition, active 3D offers an improved viewing experience, lower cost and lighter weight glasses. According to Ars Technica, the license for the standard is targeted for release in September, with the universal glasses becoming available in 2012.

Apple iPad competition will grow 134 percent in 2012

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Apple iPad competition will grow 134 percent in 2012The Apple iPad has dominated the tablet race thus far. According to a report from DigiTimes, non-Apple tablets are expected to grow 134 percent in 2012. This is nearly three times the 55 percent growth expected for the iPad during the same period. Helping fuel the charge will be Google's launch of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, sending Android tablet shipments from 19-20 million in 2011 to 44-45 million in 2012.

The gap between shipments of iPads and Android tablets may be closing. In 2010 Apple shipped approximately 14-15 million iPads. This year that number is expected to reach 35-36 million followed by 54-55 million in 2012. With 44-45 million Android tablets shipped in 2012, the market will be fueled by stiff competition. Android Ice Cream Sandwich is not the only factor which will Google's position in the market.

Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm are expected to launch new chips later this year or in early 2012. The Tegra 3 should arrive by the end of September or early October and power the second-generation Asus Eee Pad Transformer. The quad-core chip will deliver five-times the 3D processing capabilities of Tegra 2 and support up to a 2560×1600 pixel resolution — the same resolution rumored to land on the iPad 3.

Android tablets will soon have the hardware and software necessary to outshine Apple. Whether or not developers stand behind the platform and tablets can launch before the iPad 3 next year remains to be seen. Will quad-core processors, higher resolution displays and Android Ice Cream Sandwich be enough to sway you away from purchasing the iPad 3 next year?

Sharp revives Elite brand with new 60 and 70-inch LED LCD TVs

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 06:56 AM PDT

Sharp revives Elite brand with new 60 and 70-inch LED LCD TVsLooking for the best in home theater entertainment? Sharp has announced the return of an iconic line of TVs with the relaunch of the Elite brand. The new Sharp Elite TVs will be LED LCDs instead of Plasma sets, capable of delivering the "highest caliber picture quality and technology available." There's two sizes, a 60 or 70 inch model and both units will be available later this month.

The departure from Pioneer to Sharp for the Elite line is a bold move. The two sets carry a premium price, the 60-inch (PRO-60X5FD) model is $6000 (£3666) and the 70-inch (PRO-70X5FD) models is $8500 (£5176). On a positive note, both units are THX-certified and come bundled with two sets of active-shutter 3D glasses.

Like your favorite Transformer, there's more than meets the eye to the Elite brand. The Sharp Elite TVs are 1080p sets with full-array LED backlights, delivering local dimming, "better-than-240Hz" technology, Internet access, streaming services and remote technical support for the TV's settings.

Engineers from Pioneer worked closely with Sharp through the developmental process and since Sharp is the largest shareholder of Pioneer, the influence runs deep. Using Sharp's Quattron color technology (RGB+Y), a yellow sub-pixel has been added to the standard RGB color palette providing a wider range of colors. Another key feature is "FluidMotion" which helps both sets achieve the equivalent of a 720HZ effect. By quadrupling 240Hz technology with a scanning backlight, the Sharp Elite TVs eliminate all motion blur.

Coming Soon | Sharp | £3666 and up

10 year old hacker reveals exploit to dominate iOS and Android farm-style games

10 year old hacker reveals exploit to dominate iOS and Android farm-style gamesTired of waiting hours for your crops to grow crops in Farmville? At DefCon this morning a 10 year old hacker by the name of CyFi has discovered an exploit affecting farm-style games on both Android and iOS. Read on to uncover the motivation behind her discovery.

Speaking to CNET, CyFi said, “It was hard to make progress in the game, because it took so long for things to grow. So I thought, ‘Why don’t I just change the time?’” By manually changing the a smartphone or tablets clock, CyFi was able to exploit the time-dependent factors — planting corn which usually took 10 hours could now be done in half the time.

CyFi will not reveal which games are affected until after she's disclosed the information to the games' vendors. Some games include security measures to prevent time manipulation, but CyFi has found that disconnecting a phone from Wi-Fi and incrementally adjusting time often circumvents these measures.

2011 is the first year of DefCon Kids programming at the conference. A $100 reward will be given to the young hacker how finds the most games with this exploit over the next 24 hours.

entry level iMacApple has quietly added a new 21.5-inch iMac (MC978LL/A) to its stable. The budget-friendly iMac has its sights set on the education sector with a starting price of $999 (£608.44). In order to purchase the education only 21.5-inch iMac you'll need to be placing an order on behalf of an institution. Students who enter the Apple Store as not able to view the new model — at least not yet. Here's a quick rundown of the changes between the base 2011 iMac and the education only iMac.

The processor has been lowered from the 2.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 to a 3.1 GHz Intel Core i3. RAM is now 2GB of DDR3, down from 4GB but still running at 1333 MHz. There's only two options to configure with the new model, RAM and AppleCare. RAM can be upgraded to 8GB, but doing so will set you back a $270 (£164.44). HTC Puccini leaks again: homescreens revealed!

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 02:45 AM PDT

The HTC Puccini, the 10in Android Honeycomb tablet that’s yet to make its way out of the Taiwanese tablet maker’s labs, has been unofficially previewed again. PocketNow has got hold of a series of screenshots purportedly from the device that show how HTC plans to take advantage of its 1280×800 resolution.

The HTC Puccini screens show a full size keyboard with a number pad and the pen icon is present and correct which seems to confirm previous suggestions that the Scribe stylus introduced with the HTC Flyer will make a return. PocketNow predicts that the HTC Puccini is two or three months away from launch in the US but we suspect it might arrive even sooner. Sadly there’s no news on a European incarnation yet.
