| Motorola Droid 2 Gingerbread Update Now Available Posted: 01 Sep 2011 10:36 AM PDT Hey folks, those of you with the Motorola Droid 2 can now go ahead and get updated to the latest and greatest, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Available right now the update should be hitting handsets any time now. While it has leaked in the past this is the real deal right from Motorola.
If you aren’t already running CyanogenMod 7 for the Droid 2 now would be a good time to go ahead and check for updates. If you don’t feel like waiting for the OTA you can pull the update manually as usual by going to Settings>About Phone>System Updates — Then hit OK for the Gingerbread cookies to start baking.
As always Verizon has provided some documentation and you can check that out above, or full-size below. Along with the 2.3 Gingerbread update users should receive the new Moto Blur custom UI changes, some of which are actually a nice touch and better than what we’ve seen in the past from Motorola, or should I say Googarola now that Google bought Motorola Mobility. So go ahead and update that Droid 2 to Android 2.3 Gingerbread and let us know in the comment section below how everything goes. Device Info

| ViewSonic Launches ViewPad 10pro and 7x Tablets Posted: 01 Sep 2011 09:44 AM PDT ViewSonic has a few Android tablets up their sleve and have been teasing us with them over the past month or so, but today they are a bit more official at IFA 2011. We have both the dual-boot Android 2.3 and Win 7 ViewPad 10pro, and the 7″ ViewPiad 7x Android 3.2 Tablet. We confirmed these back in May and they are headed to the shelves soon.
We first heard about the ViewPad 7x way back in early May then saw a press photo later showing just how thin they plan this device to be. The ViewPad 7x is a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 powered Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet on a 7″ display. They were planning to offer the first 7″ Honeycomb Tab but Acer beat em to it with the A100 Tab. The ViewPad 7x sports the custom 3D ViewScene skin UI over Honeycomb and will come in an 8GB version, sadly rumors suggest a $499 price tag but hopefully they’ve rethought out pricing or it might not sell too well. Next up we have the ViewPad 10pro, while we’ve heard plenty about this already lets recap. This is a dual-boot Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Windows 7 tablet with the Intel Atom based 1.5 Ghz single-core processor. Sadly no Honeycomb here but the dual-boot properties should make more than a few users happy. It comes with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 16 and 32GB flavors and a 10.1″ 1024×600 resolution display. Along with Android the 32GB ViewPad 10pro will be offered with Windows 7 Professional and run an EST $699 while the 16GB model will operate under Win 7 Home Premium and will cost slightly less at $599.
We should be seeing more soon on both of these tablets so stay tuned. We also are hearing about a 7e budget friendly tablet that will come later in Q4. ) |
| Toshiba AT200 Tablet Hands-on [Video] Posted: 01 Sep 2011 09:04 AM PDT Toshiba this morning has just taken the wraps off of its new ultra-thin Android Honeycomb slate, the AT200. We were lucky enough to get some hands-on time with the new slate here in Berlin, at IFA 2011. The tab was just made official this morning and you can read about that here.
Most likely this will be called the Toshiba Excite like we mentioned earlier this week. For now the video and awesome photos will have to do, showing just how thin and pretty this tablet really is. Only one device was functional at the stand and we quickly got some photos. What makes the AT200 stand out is it’s way thinner than the Thrive, but also both thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Tab 10.
In fact, at 7.7mm thick it's 0.9mm thinner than the Samsung, while having a better camera on the rear as it’s 5 MP vs 3 MP on the Sammy. While all the specs were outlined in the links above we have a 10.1″ Android 3.2 Honeycomb Tab, powered by a TI OMAP 4430 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor, a change from the norm that has been NVIDIA. And will come with many different options available, enjoy the pictures and video for now. Toshiba AT200 hands-on video: ) |
| Lenovo A1 7″ Android Tablet Revealed Posted: 01 Sep 2011 09:01 AM PDT Today we have some news regarding the latest tablet to come from Lenovo. They are calling this the A1 and it will be their 7″ offering in the Android tablet market. Although we have both bad, and good news regarding the Lenovo A1 we’ll share all the details below as well as plenty of pictures they were nice enough to provide.
While no official announcement has been made yet Lenovo will be bringing the A1 tablet to market coming sometime in September and what makes it stand out is the amazing price. That is part of the good and bad news. The good first, the Lenovo A1 tablet will only be $199 at launch, the bad is it will only run Android 2.3 Gingerbread — no honeycomb here. The specs are pretty impressive though and this would make a great mid-range and well priced tablet for someone on a budget.
The Lenovo IdeaPad A1 is a 7″ Android 2.3 affordable Android tablet. It will feature a Cortex A8 1.0 Ghz single-core processor, a 3 MP rear and 0.3 VGA front facing camera. Coming in at 11.9mm thin (0.46 inch), and weighing just 400g. Lenovo is using a magnesium alloy roll-cage internal frame design to keep the tablet strong, yet thin and light. The 7″ LED display will have a 1024 x 600 resolution similar to the Galaxy Tab 7 and offers a great visual experience. As well as the usual Bluetooth, Wifi, micro SD, micro USB and stereo speakers one unique feature is it will have offline GPS and navigation with its unique chipset that will be powered by Navdroyd. Users can expect to see the device hit the shelves in September starting at $199 for the 16GB model and they will also offer a 32GB model but pricing has yet to be confirmed. What do you guys think? A great price for a 7″ tablet or a no go without Honeycomb? ) |
| Pogoplug Mobile promises unlimited content streaming for Android Hands-on Posted: 01 Sep 2011 09:00 AM PDT Pogoplug today has just announced their brand new Pogoplug Mobile hardware and software for Android and iOS, bringing unlimited wireless streaming of all your content right to your favorite mobile devices. Pogoplug has been around for a while already and have continued to update their software for Android including a major UI overhaul earlier this month. Today they are back with an all new product.
While cloud-based storage and content streaming isn’t anything new Pogoplus has some great features unique to their service that really makes them stand out. What we have is streaming of photos, music and video libraries from home over your own “personal cloud” to mobile phones, tablets, and laptop all on the go. It even offers automatic and secure backup of mobile content (optional of course). Pogoplus hardware and software hands-on
The new Pogoplus Mobile will retail for $79.99 and be available starting this October. With a sleek new design and form factor Pogoplus Mobile will be your at home personal cloud storage device. Simple insert any SD card for extra storage or connect as many different external hard drives as one needs. Like in the video you can simply leave your Pogoplus Mobile home with a 1TB or any sized drive attached and have access to stream any content you have anywhere in the world with the new mobile hardware and application. Shown in the video above a neat new feature is the automatic backup of pictures or videos from your mobile device. Once captured it not only instantly sends it back home to your Pogoplus Mobile device and storage, but it also makes a permanent backup and multiple sizes for when you don’t need the image full-size, or if your connection is lacking and a smaller bitrate file would be more accessible. The Pogoplus app will do all of this automatically in the background so you can do other things, or continue streaming content all while it backs up in the background. More details will be available shortly ) |
| Toshiba AT200 Official, 10.1-inch display and 7.7mm thin Posted: 01 Sep 2011 08:15 AM PDT Toshiba has just made it official. The AT200 is the codename for their brand new ultra-thin Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet. Could this be the Excite? According to the official press release they’ve nicely been passing around now the device is on display somewhere at IFA 2011, we can expect this tab to come in at only 7.7mm thin. It is not only lighter, but will also be thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1
This could very well be the Toshiba Excite we’ve heard about recently, not to mention the up close picture posted yesterday. If previous rumors are correct most likely these are one and the same, since it was also being talked about as ultra-thin.
Reading through the Toshiba press release we can see a few exciting features are listed. As usual we have a 10.1″ 1280 x 800 resolution display, 1GB of ram, but this wont be NVIDIA. It’s said to be powered by a 1.2 Ghz dual-core Texas Instrument TI OMAP 4430 processor. Come in three different sizes — 16GB, 32GB, and even 64GB. Pair all of that with a 5 MP rear shooter with LED flash, and a 2 MP camera on the front for video we have a great tablet. All that power, boosted camera and CPU while staying thinner than anything else on the market — Well done Toshiba. We are also hearing 8-10 hours of battery life. Toshiba was not able to provide pricing or availability at this time but we should see this device soon, and before the end of the year but they better hurry. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:26 AM PDT Samsung is on something of a roll with its Android tablets, pumping out three different sizes in the space of a year. Twelve months on from the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab comes the Galaxy Tab 7.7, packing a slightly larger display, higher resolution and faster, 1.4GHz dual-core processor. Perhaps more important for ultramobile users is the reduced size and weight, however. Read on for our hands-on impressions.
Galaxy Tab 7.7 Hands-on The metal chassis measures just 7.89 mm thick and tips the scales at 335g, hiding a 5,100 mAh battery in addition to a GSM/EDGE/HSPA+ modem (though it remains to be seen if the US carriers lock out voice functionality). The 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED Plus display has huge viewing angles and matches the resolution of bigger Honeycomb slates, and as we know from the Galaxy S II it’s color-rich and bright. TouchWiz arguably makes more sense on the 7.7-inch screen, pulling together the various social and multimedia content to the homescreen.
Performance – considering the software isn’t final yet – is swift, and one-handed use is simple thanks to a casing that’s thinner than Amazon’s Kindle (albeit a little heavier). Samsung reckons it’ll last for 10hrs of video playback on a single charge, though obviously we haven’t had time to test that promise. More on this great new tablet in our hands-on video! ) |
| Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:14 AM PDT Bigger than a Galaxy S II but smaller than a new Galaxy Tab 7.7; offering the latest in capacitive touch but also a stylus; the Samsung Galaxy Note is a device with a few personalities. Intended to pull together phone, paper notebook, games device and tablet into one pen-enabled smart handheld, it’s certainly one of the more ambitious gadgets we’ve seen at IFA 2011.
First impressions are that it’s an oversized Galaxy S II, with pretty much identical design language. It’s obviously bigger, though not as thick as you might expect; you can still slot it neatly into a front trouser pocket, for instance. The stylus whips out of the bottom – unlike HTC’s Flyer, it gets a dedicated storage slot – and can be used to grab and annotate screenshots, write handwritten emails and messages, use handwriting-recognition (which works surprisingly well with neat cursive) and generally navigate the phone. That would be pointless if the accuracy wasn’t up to scratch, but it is: we could get fine-flowing ink and various line-widths thanks to the pressure sensitivity.
The 5.3-inch Super AMOLED HD display is, at 1280 x 800, the same resolution as Samsung’s tablet line-up, but the panel technology shows its worth with huge viewing angles and brilliant colors and detail. Colors don’t invert even when you’re looking almost side-on. At 178g and 9.65mm thick it’s a little more in the hand or pocket than the GSII but still easy to hold in a single hand, and the bigger display makes using the on-screen keyboard a particular pleasure.
Samsung’s TouchWiz-customized Android Gingerbread software isn’t finalized yet, but the Galaxy Note still put in a solid showing. The custom S Memo app works well, showing up as a sharing option in the standard Android list, and allowing you to clip photos, voice, text, handwriting and drawings; alternatively you can take a screenshot by holding down the side button on the active stylus and double-tapping the display. Crops can be freehand shapes, and eventually Samsung will release a collaborative whiteboarding app, which will allow two remote Galaxy Note owners to work together on the same page. Galaxy Note Hands-on Then there’s S Planner and Samsung’s other customized apps to suit the higher-resolution screen. Gone is the wood-effect UI on the Galaxy Tab, replaced by a feature-packed Filofax alternative with pinch-zooming between the various month/week/etc views and support for dragging and dropping appointments around your schedule. It works well, and the extra pixels mean less swiping and paging to find exactly what you’re looking for or get an overview of your week or month. The email app is polished too, with a split-screen view in landscape orientation that shows inbox and message preview simultaneously. Unfortunately the Gmail app is Google’s standard one.
We’re still waiting to see just how long the 2,500 mAh user-accessible battery will last, if owners of the Galaxy Note take Samsung at its word and try to replace their phone, media player, notebook and portable games device in one sweep. Similarly, Samsung’s plans for the S Pen SDK, allowing third-parties to take advantage of the stylus, will depend on how keen developers are to further customize their apps. Still, while before we might have said 5+ inches was too big for a smartphone, the Galaxy Note has us reconsidering. ) |
| AndyPad Pre-Orders Start Today Posted: 01 Sep 2011 02:32 AM PDT Who remembers us talking about the AndyPad? If you don’t you should because these are some extremely competitively priced Android tablets and today they are finally up for pre-order. We’ve covered the AndyPad more than a few times in the past and recently they received some hands-on treatment.
Over on andypad.co.uk they have officially gone up for pre-order. Both the AndyPad and the AndyPad Pro. While these aren’t like what we are used to with Honeycomb tablets they do offer some decent specs all at amazingly low prices. More on the official specs and pricing can be found here.
At 129 British pounds, roughly $210, the AndyPad is a bit different from the Android tablets we're used to. With a resistive touch screen, no multi-touch, at a resolution of 800×480 it isn’t the top-tier device you’d think but does feature 8GB storage, Wi-Fi, and more. Then the AndyPad Pro will cost 179 pounds, or $292, and here you'll get a lot more bang for your buck. With a 1024×600 resolution capacitive screen with multitouch, Bluetooth and dual cameras it has a little more of the specs we are used to, and features 16GB of internal storage. For now head over to AndyPad at the link below and pre-order your own today. [via AndyPad] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy Note Unveiled, 5.3″ High-Res HD Display, 1.4 Ghz Dual-Core and more Posted: 01 Sep 2011 02:00 AM PDT Live in Berlin, Germany, here at IFA 2011 Samsung has just unveiled their next product line and the evolution of mobile devices. They are calling this the Samsung Galaxy Note. With the Note you can do more, and see more all on the go with one device. Bringing together a perfect blend of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets with a touch of pen and paper all rolled into one we have the Samsung Galaxy Note. Anyone see a stylus?
Samsung has just announced this amazing new platform and we have all the dirt for you right here. The Samsung Galaxy Note will be the ultimate device. No longer will users carry a phone, tablet, camera, notepad, pen, paper and more — instead you’ll have the Galaxy Note. What Samsung has designed is a device with a 5.3″ Super AMOLED display with HD WXGA 1280×800 resolution, powered by a 1.4 Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and more. All this running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Details are still trickling in on this awesome device so we are still gathering our thoughts but I do know one thing, I want one ASAP. The Galaxy Note will feature many of the same specs we have grown to love from the Samsung Galaxy S II. The Galaxy Note will also have an 8 MP camera with LED flash, a 2 MP front camera for video chat. Being ultra-portable even though we have a large display it will only be 9.65mm (0.37″) thin and weigh 178 grams while boosting the battery to a whopping 2500 mAh. At first it appears to be a Galaxy S II but you quickly realize it’s something much more. With Samsung’s own unique S-Pen technology note taking and input for drawing or anything else you’d ever need will be as simple as can be. Included with the device will be a stylus that neatly is concealed in the device as seen in the photos. On the side is a small button that, when you hold it down and tap, activates some of the pen-specific features. As soon as we get more details and hear all about this new mobile device we will be sure to update you all, oh and expect some hands-on coming very shortly. The Samsung Galaxy Note will come in both LTE and HSPA+ flavors and will see a global release but no other details have been released at this time. | Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Unveiled, HD AMOLED Display and 1.4 Ghz Dual-core Posted: 01 Sep 2011 01:59 AM PDT Today live in Berlin at IFA 2011 Samsung has just announced the brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and boy does it look awesome. The Tab 7.7 features the world’s first tablet to offer a Super AMOLED Plus display and with a HD resolution of 1280×800 on that small screen it looks amazing. We have plenty of press shots below and you can follow along during the Samsung Keynote right here at live.slashgear.com/
Where do I start. This 7.7″ Tablet will be powered by a 1.4 Ghz dual-core processor, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, have that amazing Super AMOLED Plus Display with a 1280×800 resolution as said above, 1GB Ram, come in 16GB, 32GB, and a 64GB variant. 3MP rear camera with flash and 2MP front for video chat and more. It measures just 7.89 millimeters thin and weighs only 335 grams (12 ounces), basically making this tablet one of the most portable devices in the market. We have a 5,100 mAh battery for over 10 hours of video playback all wrapped in that tiny package.
If you noticed from the images we also see 3G on board. This tablet will feature full voice and video call capabilities with HSPA+ 21 Mbps network connectivity (We’ll see how US carriers take to that idea). We have 1080p video playback, micro SD support and all of this is running on Android 3.2 Honeycomb. Exact dimensions are 196.7x 133 x 7.89mm and like previously mentioned it only weighs in at 335 grams making this thing extremely lightweight. All of that in a package that is thinner than the Amazon Kindle, do want. While we don’t have availability or pricing yet, we do have some hands-on videos coming soon but what else do you need to know? Android 3.2, dual-core, 7.7″ AMOLED Plus HD Display, and 3G connectivity for voice and data — I’m sold already!

| Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch Hands-On Special Edition with Philip Berne [Video] Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:30 PM PDT It’s always an great day when you run into Philip Berne, Samsung Telecommunications Marketing Manager, Technical Media, and columnist for our sister site SlashGear – this week we asked him to give us a special edition rundown of what we should expect from the Epic 4G Touch version of the Galaxy S II USA launch, and he of course gratefully provided us with nothing less than a super classy look at the device. You may remember our look at the international version of the Galaxy S II back at CTIA 2011 with Philip Berne as well – an internationally known set of videos that gave many their first look at one of the best selling Android devices in history. Join us for a cool hands-on demo video straight from the pro.
What you’re going to see is a set of features available not only on the Epic 4G Touch version of the device, but on said device is the demo we get, Phil showing us his own personal device straight out of his pocket. What you’ll see shown off is, first, a quick look at the size and shape of the device, a reminder of the fact that the Galaxy S II will be the thinnest “4G” device on each of the 3 carriers it’s going to be carried on, its 4.5-inch display (on this and the T-Mobile version) brilliant as always as it is the Super AMOLED Plus we know so well. We get to see the new widgets drawer, resizability in all of the Samsung-specific widgets quite apparent and adhering to a lovely edge-to-edge grid, resizable to the max. On the back of the device you’ll find the 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video capture at High Profile – this meaning you’ve got low compression and extra high quality “close to what you’d expect to find on a Blu-Ray video”. Berne reintroduces us to Samsung’s own Voice Talk powered by Lingo, this being a rather simple voice command system that here is demoed as working with a simple “Hi Galaxy” and a followup “Dial Han at work”. Of course Berne lets us know that Han [Solo] does not actually work with him at Samsung, we can only assume this is because Solo recently announced that he was, in fact, a fictional Science Fiction character. Berne lets us know that when you hook this device up to the official Car Dock (which you can see in our accessories rundown), you’ll be automatically opening Voice Talk for your hands-free convenience. Kies Air is next, an app which Samsung devices are set to use to synchronize contacts and all manner of content via an automatically generated webpage that the app creates. This means you can move stuff back and forth between this device and any other device, be it another smartphone, a tablet, or your home PC, just so long as they have a web browser. Convenient! Take a look at our other hands-on with this device courtesy of yours truly, and let us know if you’ll be picking up this version of the Galaxy S II, if you’ll be waiting for the AT&T or T-Mobile version, or if you’re thinking of waiting for whatever piece of magic Samsung releases next! ) |
| Samsung Galaxy S II AT&T Featured Apps App Hands-On [Video] Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:24 PM PDT Beyond what we’ve seen thus far in what new apps we’ll be getting to see on these USA versions of the Galaxy S II, there are a sparse (and perhaps thankfully sparse) few additional new apps to behold on each of the devices. One app that we’re refreshingly GLAD to see added to the lineup comes on AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S II, an app called “Featured Apps”, it being an extremely simple system for AT&T to be showing off applications that it suggests specifically to the device it’s featured on, thereby helping the (perhaps new) owner with finding out with what their device is capable of.
Inside this extremely easy to understand tiny application, we’re able to cycle through several pages of suggested apps that include an icon and a short description of what they’re all about. Once you tap an app you’re interested in, you’re brought straight to the Android Market. Notice also, separate from this app, that the Android Market appears to be coming up as the newest version (version 3.0.27 as seen back in this post by Cory a week or so ago), this meaning you’ve got the ability to essentially lock anyone who isn’t you out from purchasing apps with your account should they somehow gain access to your device. The AT&T Featured Apps app has only a few apps per screen, only a few screens here at the outset, and a simple About page for you to learn what version of the Apps App you’ve got running. This will almost certainly play a bigger role in AT&T’s future relationship with apps of all sort should it prove to be successful here on the Galaxy S II. It all depends on if YOU plan on using it. Also note that this video was filmed at the GSII event in NYC that we attended earlier this week. Find all the Galaxy S II content your heart could possibly desire by hitting our [Galaxy S II] portal. Also if you’d like more information on the NVIDIA apps portal mentioned in the video, head to our hands-on post as well. Third party apps directories to the rescue! ) |
| Toshiba Excite Ultra-Thin Tablet Pictured at IFA Posted: 31 Aug 2011 04:18 PM PDT A few days ago we mentioned a new Toshiba Tablet was on the way but this time around it would be much thinner than the Toshiba Thrive. We saw a few pictures earlier this week but today from IFA the real deal was officially on hand and we have pictures. This is the new ultra-thin Toshiba Excite Tablet.
We first got a glimpse of the thin design and the name here but the new image above basically confirms any doubts we may have had. Notebookitalia was able to snap up the photo as well as some possible specs. The new Toshiba tablet should be called the “Excite” when it launches sometime shortly this fall.
We are hearing the Excite will feature a 1.5 Ghz dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor, 1GB of RAM, micro USB, micro SD, and mini HDMI-out along with a front and rear facing camera. Details are still a little blurry but the photo sure isn’t. Sources are claiming the tablet to be extremely thin and sexy with a brushed aluminum back but it has a unique indent or groove that runs around the entire device, this is probably where to two pieces meet. Stay tuned for more pictures as we are live at IFA 2011 ourselves. [via NotebookItalia] ) |
| Motorola DROID Bionic Launching September 8th, 16GB SD card included Posted: 31 Aug 2011 04:06 PM PDT There you have it folks. If we didn’t already have a pretty strong idea this was the day, these documents make it even more officially official. Verizon equipment guides have now been leaked showing the Droid Bionic will launch across all major channels on September 8th, just like rumors suggested. There is no mention of direct fill or pre-orders so that status is still unknown, maybe they want everyone waiting in line at stores.
For those waiting or counting we have just a little over a week to wait, can you manage a few more days with that old and slow Droid 2? While looking over the spec sheets and guides listed at the source below they give all sorts of details regarding the Bionic. After a closer look it appears it will be shipping with obviously the dual-core CPU and 1GB of ram, but also it will come standard with a 16GB Micro SD card pre-installed. Much better than what we’ve seen in the past and that is one less thing users will need to buy.
It also states the Bionics weight. It is listed at 5.60oz which isn’t the lightest device, but isn’t the heaviest either. That makes the Bionic slightly heavier than the similarly sized Droid X2 but lighter than both the Thunderbolt and the Droid 3. Samsung still has everyone beat on lightweight smartphones and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon. For now I’m sure more will continue to leak over the next few days, oh and the DroidDoes.com site has been initiated. Read more on that here. [via Droid-Life] ) |
| HTC Sensation 2 Special Edition with Beats Audio details leak Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:41 PM PDT Yes you read that title right, what we are hearing this evening is HTC is preparing to launch a HTC Sensation 2 SE or special edition with Beats Audio by Dr. Dre. First off I’m going to throw this instantly in the rumor mill for a few reasons. First being the Sensation hasn’t been out long enough to replace it, second being why call it special edition if all future HTC handsets are going to have the Beats Audio technology inside, just a thought.
This could be completely accurate, and might just be blowing smoke but over at CNET they apparently have all the details. What we can “expect” to see is a HTC Sensation 2 SE that will feature an upgraded 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor like what the HTC Jetstream will be powered by. That is faster than the original Sensation and its 1.2 Ghz CPU. It will feature the same 4.3″ qHD display but the leaked document says “advanced HD screen” which also makes it sound like someone is confused.
If the rumors are true we will be seeing the same 8MP camera on the rear, a slightly thicker design because they’ve also boosted the battery going from 1,520mAH to a more respectable 1,730mAh. It will be bundled with a nice set of Beats Audio headphones and may even have a Beats Audio logo on the rear or during the boot animation. While this all sounds nice I just don’t see the point, although it might get the Beats and HTC name out there together as one. These details are just leaking so take it how you want. If we hear more we will be sure to report back. What do you guys think is this real, or just some rumor? [via CNET] ) |
| MIUI Xiaomi MI-One Phone Now Shipping Posted: 31 Aug 2011 01:58 PM PDT This week the guys at MIUI have finally started shipping the MI-One smartphone in China with more locations coming soon. In case you’ve not been following along MIUI is the extremely popular custom ROM developers for Android and they’ve recently announced and are now launching their very own Android phone. Complete with their own custom version of Android 2.3.4 pre-installed, something I wish CyanogenMod would do too.
As for the hardware if anyone didn’t catch those details a few weeks ago we have a very nice custom made phone from the company Xiaomi. They aren’t widely known but this MIUI MI-One should help them out. The hardware includes a 4.0″ 480×854 resolution LED Display, a powerful dual-core 1.5 Ghz Qualcomm processor, 1GB of ram with 4GB of ROM. It also features a Micro SD slot, front and rear cameras and everything else we expect on a top tier smartphone these days.
The camera on the rear is 8 MP with LED flash and can record HD video, 2 MP front camera for video chat, as well as three capacitive buttons down below on the display. Another big part of the specs is they’ve included a huge 1930 mAh battery to ensure users get optimal battery life. Over on miuiandroid.com they’ve been posting plenty of pictures and videos throughout this exciting time. If you’d like to see a full video of the MI-One smartphone Engadget received some hands-on time and the video is at the link provided. The team and MIUI has been nice enough to upload plenty of pictures over the past few weeks and they are all nicely below in the gallery for those interested. While we still don’t have any official info on when and if this phone will ship to other areas or countries, we can hope right? [via MIUI] ) |
| HTC Thunderbolt and Incredible Update to 2.3 Gingerbread coming this September Posted: 31 Aug 2011 12:35 PM PDT HTC today has just announced that the HTC Thunderbolt will finally receive the much anticipated update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread come sometime this September, basically in the next 30 days unless it gets delayed again. The announcement was just made over at HTC’s Facebook page.
This isn’t really big news, although users of the Thunderbolt have been begging for the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for what seems like months already. While many HTC devices have already been updated to 2.3 the Incredible and Thunderbolt have been left behind. Last we heard the Thunderbolt build was delayed yet again, but then a few days later the official 2.3 Gingerbread build was leaked then another the next day. Then we have the DROID Incredible, we’ve been hearing different things about its update status for a month or so now. Originally a employee misspoke and said it would not receive Gingerbread but that was quickly corrected. We saw initial reports that the Incredible was getting the OTA to 2.3.4 a few weeks ago but that was quickly delayed too. It appears HTC has been having a few issues with these updates but that is probably because they are also adding the new bootloader unlocking into the updates. Most likely both devices will get updated to Android version 2.3.4 but we can’t know for sure although the Incredible leaks suggest exactly that. You can download the 2.3.4 Incredible build here, and the Thunderbolt builds are linked to above, or just wait for the official update coming in the next 30 days or so. [via HTC] ) |
| Google Voice Updated, Fixes for delayed notifications and more Posted: 31 Aug 2011 11:43 AM PDT The Google Voice app received an update today folks. Not only did Google add some much needed fixes but there are a few new UI changes too. First off at the top of the list you’ll notice them reference being able to make calls without data connectivity. What this means is once you call a number once, Google Voice will remember it and you wont need a data connection to call that number in the future. More details below.
Make sure to check out the new widget, and after updating make sure to at least open the new Google Voice App once on your phone so everything can get dialed in and ready to go and route calls. Here is a list of some of the changes as seen in the photo above. -Does not require data connectivity for making calls to all numbers you previously called In the past I didn’t know Google Voice used data but apparently it does this in the background to route calls to G Voice. Now that will only happen once on each number rather than every time you dial. I’ve always had a few issues with notifications so that is nice to see finally being updated and fixed. I really like the new widget as we now have a bigger box for text. Feel free to download and enjoy the new Google Voice in the Android Market by clicking here. ) |
