Motorola DROID Bionic Live Demo Units Arriving at Verizon Stores

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 11:08 AM PDT

While Verizon still hasn’t officially announced this phone we know everything there is to know about it basically. They’ve recently launched the ARena Scavenger Hunt App to go along with the DroidDoes.com website and we are now seeing the official commercial on TV’s saying September 8th, all we need is Verizon to officially say the word, or do we?

A few sources are now spotting the actual phone in Verizon stores. With all sorts of launch kits, dummy models, and even live demo units appearing across multiple Verizon Wireless stores (Live Phone, Charge Me Up). In case you missed it the DROID Bionic Facebook page is now live and yesterday we learned the full retail price will indeed be $589, and $299 with a new contract.

The Verizon commercial is now stating September 8th so get ready guys. We learned this morning the Droid Bionic has already been rooted so now all we need is to get this thing in our hands already. I’ll be stopping by my local Verizon Stores this weekend hoping to maybe snag a demo unit sitting out. Feel free to do the same and drop us any pics in our TIP US portal.

Barnes and Noble Nook Color 2 in the works

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 10:49 AM PDT

It appears that the booksellers Barnes & Noble have another Android tablet in the works, this next generation Nook Color 2 (or whatever it may be called) appearing to be set to be released as early as this month, so says Digitimes in Taiwan. It is in Taiwan that manufacturers are said to be speaking about a brand new version of what we know as a quite decent eReader and undeniably hackable Android tablet. Details on the next eBook reader are at the moment still sparse, but we’re to understand that this new device will have the same 7-inch display size as the current generation, companies TPK Holdings and Inventec responsible for touch panels and the device’s assembly process respectively.

One of the new unique features we’re seeing as a possibility for this next tab is a possible E Ink partnership with the company providing e-paper backplates for the Nook Color 2, this meaning the tablet may have one of the first color E Ink displays on the mass market. Take a look at Chris Davies hands-on with a new color E Ink tablet over at IFA 2011 and let us know if you think this is what the Nook Color 2 could be looking at:

We’ve had a long history with the first Nook Color, aka NOOKcolor as it was called back then – yours truly did a full “Week With” review of the device when it was originally released. Check it out and let us know if you’d consider picking up the second generation!

Verizon to offer free NFL Mobile Premium Access to 4G LTE Customers

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 10:31 AM PDT

The lockout is over and now Verizon has yet again teamed up with the NFL to provide exclusive NFL content to their subscribers. With the Verizon NFL Mobile App users will have access to all things Football. Teasing us all with the Droid Bionic on the flyer the NFL and Verizon has announced that they will be giving 4G LTE customers the premium app service for free.

I almost want to switch to Verizon for the NFL Mobile App alone. With this new deal 4G LTE customers will get the NFL Premium subscription absolutely for free. 3G and regular users pay $10 a month for the same service so this is a pretty stellar deal. With NFL Premium you get to watch every ESPN Monday Night, NBC Sunday Night & NFLN Thursday Night Football games. Basically you have all the games one would ever need.

Even better is you’ll get access to NFL RedZone where they show every single scoring play from every game across the league. Again head over to the Android Market and download the official NFL Mobile App, and now you have just one more reason why you should buy the Bionic.

Motorola Takes Droid BIONIC Facebook Promo to another level, revealing specs as it goes

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 10:12 AM PDT

Man when it comes to Verizon and in this case Motorola promoting their DROID-branded line of devices, they really pull out all the stops, wouldn’t you say? What we’re looking at here today is a brilliant animated piece with robot parts and bright red flashing lights all over the place, electronic arms grasping for orbs as you click on what will eventually be the full collection of confirmed official Droid BIONIC key specs. Now if only the actual BIONIC would be able to sprout arms and legs and a big red eye like this promo does.

Just this morning we found that the BIONIC had already been rooted before it’s been released to the public, yesterday we got a taste of the user guide and a price point: $589 off-contract, and today we get to see a lovely bit of promotional material on the Droid BIONIC Facebook page. You’ll be tapping into new features “on a rolling basis” we’re told, all the way leading up to the September 8th release date without a doubt.

Meanwhile you can also check out several other Droid BIONIC promotional situations, first at DroidDoes.com and DroidLanding, then with the ARena Augmented Reality App with which you’ll be able to win yourself a BIONIC with your running and your pointing! Furthermore, you can take an early look at the laptop dock and the rest of the accessories for the BIONIC now as well. Check em out!

Motorola DROID Bionic Rooted Already

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 09:35 AM PDT

Well ahead of the release date it appears the new Motorola DROID Bionic has already been rooted. Just as a few of us suspected the recent Droid 3 exploit that seems to be working on most newly update to Android 2.3 Motorola devices has also got the job done for the Bionic. I’m sure a few were debating buying the phone for this exact reason so this is good news.

We don’t have much here, but thanks to mydroidworld we now have a screenshot and while it doesn’t show us much, we can clearly see the “targa” (Bionic codename) has achieved root access. This is a good start that is for sure not to mention we may get a one-click-root shortly too.

Like I said, this is a good start and a sign of good things to come but we still don’t know any details regarding the all important bootloader. Most likely it will still be locked like every other Motorola device as of late. With all the progress on devices like the Atrix and the Droid X we should have ways around that for those looking to mod, hack, and enjoy their new Droid Bionic.

Who’s buying one now?

Philips unveils new Fidelio docks for Android that are full of rock

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 07:10 AM PDT

Philips has shown off three new docking stations in the Fidelio family and all three of these are made specifically for the Android devices out there. The docking station line includes the AS111, AS351, and the AS851. The Android units are based on the same speaker systems as the range made for the iPhone and promises superior sound. The key to allowing the docking stations to work with all Android devices is a special micro USB connector on the dock.

The connector can be adjusted for portrait and landscape modes allowing any tablet or Android phone to be plugged in. Philips also has a dedicated Fidelio app for Android devices that pairs the smartphone with the docking station using Bluetooth. The app has some interesting features like the ability to let you find new artists, new music styles using music and media stores, and it can play your media library along with media from the web.

The AS851 is the high-end offering with 30W RMS of output power and special bass pipes to provide deeper bass. The A351 is made for use at home and the go with options for AC power or battery power. It has bass boost technology and 10W RMS total power. The last model is the AS111, which is a compact dock. It has a 360-degree design made to sit on a table and offers omni-directional sound.

Samsung has “no plans” to bring Galaxy Tab 7.7 or Galaxy Note to the US [Update: Samsung clarifies]

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 06:14 AM PDT

If you watched the hands on videos we posted up yesterday about the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the Galaxy Note and though you would like to get one of those new tablets for yourself, we have some bad news. Apparently, Samsung told GottaBeMobile that the company has “no plans” to bring the models to the US. That may mean that if you want one in the States you will need to import or go without.

The potentially disappointing news came by way of a company statement that said there are “no plans” to launch either tablet in the US. Perhaps that could change if a carrier shows interest in either device. That doesn’t seem likely to happen though with all the other tablet offerings already available unless these two can be offered at a low price.

Davies speculated yesterday that the Tab 7.7 would still come to the US lacking its voice service capability. That doesn’t seem likely at this point. With Samsung saying it has no plans for the US it has likely shopped the tablet around and found no carrier interest at this time.

[via MobileBurn]

Update: We’ve spoken to Samsung, and it seems there was some confusion in the original comment. “Samsung has not yet announced availability for any part of the world” the company told Android Community. “Those will be coming at a later date.”

That’s not to say that a US launch is definitely a lock-in, but instead that we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out whether carriers are keen on either device or not.

Imo instant messaging app for Android gets update

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 03:53 AM PDT

The geeks behind the multi-chat service app imo have announced a new update for the app that is now available to download. The update adds some interesting new features to the app. If you aren’t familiar with imo for Android the app allows you to take all those IM apps that you use to chat with people and combines them into one place. The app supports Skype, GTalk, MSN, ICQ/AIM, Yahoo, Jabber, Vk.com, Hyves, Myspace, Facebook, Google Talk, and Jabber.

The new update brings some interesting features with a new easier to use UI. The chat history is now viewable and searchable from inside the app. You can also have chat groups set up. The chat groups will work with people on different devices included from the web, Android phones, the iPad, and Blackberry devices.

The group chats also allow for photo sharing and a bunch of bugs are fixed as well in this update. The update landed yesterday and is up for download right now. The current versions is 2.2.7 and you need a device running Android 1.6 or higher.

Samsung Galaxy Note vs Tab 7.7 vs Galaxy S II [Video]

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 06:02 PM PDT

All eyes have been on Samsung today, with the company showcasing the ultra portable Galaxy Tab 7.7 then quickly following that with the new Galaxy Note. Not only do both of these have 1280 x 800 AMOLED display’s but they both also offer voice and data connectivity. Can you imagine using the Galaxy Tab 7.7 like a phone?

I don’t know about you but the Galaxy Tab 7.7 may be awesome but holding that bad boy up to my ear might be a task, but I’d love to walk around town and see what types of looks I get. Luckily for us our man Chris Davies will take the humiliation instead and was nice enough to pose with not only the Galaxy Tab 7.7, but also with the much anticipated Galaxy Note.

First off we have a quick video comparing all three of these awesome devices. This is the Galaxy Note vs Tab 7.7 vs Galaxy S II all in a quick hands-on video for you to look over and maybe help you decide if the size is too much for you, or if you could see yourself using something like the Note daily.

I did mention we had a few poses with these new devices from Samsung so I’ll start with the big one. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has some awesome features and you can see our hands-on here. Along with a 7.7′ 1280 x 800 resolution display it will also feature full 3G HSPA+ for both voice, and data connectivity. It remains to be seen if U.S. carriers will be ok with that, but here’s the photo for you all to laugh and enjoy.

The Tab 7.7 isn’t ideal for a phone but sure would make an awesome tablet. It’s thin, lightweight, and extremely powerful with a 1.4 Ghz dual-core processor and would be a perfect mobile companion.

Next we have the Galaxy Note. You’ve probably seen plenty of this new item today but just in case here is our hands-on. The Note is what Samsung is calling the perfect device. Not too big, and not too small they feel 5.3″ is as large as users would want to go, and still consider it a phone. What do you guys think? Again our man Chris Davies has an up close and personal shot for you to actually see what the Galaxy Note would look like if you were to use it as a smartphone. Personally I think I could handle that and want one immediately.

He doesn’t look too happy but trust me — he’s loving it.

Now I could go on for a long while regarding both of these Phoneblets or whatever you want to call them. We’ve all seen the specs and if not they are both conveniently linked to above more than a few times. I’ve always said I felt that anything over 4.3″ was just too big, and isn’t something I’d ever consider using on a day-to-day basis — then I tried the Samsung Infuse with its 4.5″ display and it didn’t seem so bad. While Apple still thinks a 3.5″ screen is plenty Samsung is wasting no time bringing out the big guns with the Galaxy Note. They feel not only is 4.5″ suitable as they’ve launched the SGSII all across the US with a big 4.5″ display, but now they are quickly bringing the Galaxy Note to market next.

Is this a trend where we are going to slowly but surely get larger and larger, or will the Galaxy Note meet the same fate as the failed Dell Streak 5? Being thinner, lighter, faster, sexier, and having a huge 2500 mAh battery I have a feeling the Galaxy Note will be a huge success.

Enough about what I think I want you guys to check out the video above, look over all the photo’s below and ask yourself what the right size device for your everyday needs would be. We’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts, input and comments so feel free to drop a comment in the appropriate section below.

Is it time to Tab, time to Note, or is the Galaxy S II just right?

ViewSonic ViewPad 7e Budget Tab Hands-on [Video]

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 05:18 PM PDT

Today while we were live in Berlin, Germany, for IFA 2011 we caught a glimpse at the one and only upcoming ViewPad 7e from ViewSonic. The “e” stands for entry as this will be their entry level tablet for the world of Android. We don’t know much about the ViewPad 7e and briefly mentioned it earlier today. You can learn all about the specs below along with our video.

The ViewPad 7e will be a great entry level budget Android tablet. It was a loud crowd at IFA but the audio is loud enough for us to make out some decent specs for this tablet. It will feature a 7″ 1024 x 600 resolution display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread (no Honeycomb here), with a 1 Ghz single-core CPU and 512MB of RAM. While it may not be up to par with current tablet offerings neither is the price, so that makes this a nice little purchase if you ask me.

We have mini USB, micro HDMI, and the charging port port on bottom, micro SD on side. It also features a 3MP camera on the rear and VGA for the front. As we can clearly see from the video the ViewPad 7e will also come running the new Viewscene 3D User Interface over Android. Only downside I see is this is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than Honeycomb but the potential for updates in the future are there so we can’t rule that out.

While that is all we know for now, we can tell you the ViewSonic ViewPad 7e budget tablet should be available next month for 149 euros, or around $199 USD.

ViewSonic ViewPad 7x Android 3.2 Tab Hands-on [Video]

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:49 PM PDT

ViewSonic is bringing their own 7″ Android 3.2 Tab to the market and we have some details for you. Hanging out at IFA 2011 the team was able to get some hands-on video with the device as well as all the juicy details. We mentioned the ViewPad 7x earlier today but now we have pictures and video for you to check out after the break.

I must warn you the video has a bit of background noise as it was an extremely busy event over in Berlin, Germany, today so you’ll have to bear with us but the details are audible. What we have in the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x is an Android 3.2 Honeycomb tab with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core CPU at 1.0 Ghz, 1GB of RAM and comes with an 8GB and 16GB flavor. We have a 7″ 1024 x 600 resolution display, a rear facing 5 mp camera with LED flash (720p video) with 2 MP front for video chat.

For connectivity, we have micro-HDMI for 1080p video out, micro USB, stereo speakers, and a micro SD slot to expand storage all neatly on the bottom of the device. ViewSonic has said it will offer a Wi-Fi only model first but they do plan to bring a 3G HSPA+ model to market soon. I really like the Viewscene 3D UI they’ve added, it looks quite spiffy and you can check it out with the video and pictures below.

Sadly they still mention that extremely steep 349 Euros price tag which is around $499 USD, a price that should absolutely be lower for a 7″ Tablet. We should see the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x Android 3.2 Tab hit the streets in late September.

Motorola DROID Bionic Retail Price is $589, User Manual Available for Download

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 02:53 PM PDT

More Droid news folks, the Motorola Droid Bionic will be priced at $589 without contract for those few that may be looking to buy this beast outright and not sign any agreements or contracts. While this may not mean a lot I’m sure there is more than a few of you out there that aren’t eligible for an upgrade but can’t wait to get your hands on the superphone — start saving those pennies.

After a few prying eyes were looking through the DroidDoes.com terms and conditions they spotted that the retail price would be that which was mentioned above, $589.99 and this isn’t really a surprise as I could have guessed something very similar. We still don’t have any official word on what pricing will be for those agreeing to new terms and such but plenty of rumors suggested $299.

In other exciting news, the Droid Bionic user manual has been leaked to the interwebs and is available for download in PDF form for anyone possibly interested in looking through all that goodness. In case you missed it the DroidDoes ARena Augmented Reality App is now available for those planning to search out and try to win one of these bad boys. Check out the full details and download the app here.

Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2011 Full Round-Up

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 01:52 PM PDT

This year’s IFA 2011 offering from Samsung brought forth a couple of fantastically amazing Galaxy devices, the first of which is the next step in the Galaxy Tab line with a 7.7 offering complete with a full-metal chassis and a Super AMOLED Plus display. The second is a wholly new concept from Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy Note, a new sort of hybrid piece of hardware that takes the largest screen Samsung decided could fit on a still ultra-portable device, complete with a lovely stylus.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

What this newest Galaxy Tab offers is a fully HD experience on a 1280×800 pixel 7-inch display, that being a Super AMOLED Plus screen with brightness and sharpness to spare. This device has a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, Android 3.2 Honeycomb running with Samsung’s TouchWiz UX over the top, and it’ll come in 16, 32, and 64GB variants. Inside you’ll get 1 GB of RAM, the entire chassis is 7.89 millimeters thin, and the entire bulk of the device only weighs in at 335 grams. Also inside you’ll find a 5,100 mAh battery that’ll bring you over 10 hours of video playback, all of this running on 3G connectivity in the very near future.

MicroSD card support is included, up to 32GB cards supported, the dimensions of this device at 196.7x 133 x 7.89mm and able to bring forth amazing 1080p video playback. Those three specs alone should have you squirming in your seat, but what’s best is that you’ve got that ultra bright Super AMOLED Plus display coming standard. This is the largest such display on an Android device thus far and we cannot WAIT to get our hands on one.

Galaxy Tab 7.7 Hands-on

Samsung Galaxy Note

As if to say no, that Galaxy Tab 7.7 wasn’t enough, Samsung also revealed what they’re touting as the perfect mid-way point between smartphones and tablets, here now in the Galaxy Note. This device packs the same resolution display as the larger 7.7 tablet, but works with it on a 5.3-inch display, this device therefore having what Samsung is calling a new “HD Super AMOLED” display. It’s undeniably bright, and there’s 285ppi in what Samsung calls a perfectly sized display. This is the new biggest brightest mobile display on earth – would you agree?

This device also comes with a stylus that fits inside the actual handset, this pen able to do many things including writing on frames of movies, adding notes to essentially any screen you can imagine, and take screenshots. This is what may well be the next generation of smart mobile technology, and it looks great!

Google Nexus S in Space Round 2 [Video]

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 01:26 PM PDT

Lets talk about a different Samsung device for a minute, this is the Google Samsung Nexus S and its made the long trek to space. Back in July we told you about the Nexus S joining the space shuttle Atlantis for its last trip to space. Today the team at Google has updated us with an awesome video clip showing some of the amazing work NASA and the Nexus S are doing so check it out after the break.

Not only did NASA give the Nexus S the green light to enter space, but it appears they chose it for its ease of use and for how open and accessible the Android OS actually is. Pretty cool coming from the geniuses at NASA right? Check out the video below:

NASA is using ground controllers moving and controlling spheres in space using the Google Nexus S. The device picks up data, sensor readings and more and sends it all back to the user, pretty neat stuff. Using custom software the Nexus S hardware such as camera, sensors, gyroscope, motion control and more all become the central brain for the robots in space. Everything neatly in sync using Wi-Fi on the device and shuttle being tied to the ground crew for ultimate control. Sounds pretty awesome if you ask me.

Thanks to NASA and Google we can all sit safely grounded to Earth while the smartphones and robots do all the dirty work. More information is available at the source.

Samsung i727 makes a stop at the FCC, reveals Galaxy S II features with AT&T 4G LTE

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 12:31 PM PDT

I think I figured out what Samsung is doing, they’ve gathered everything they have been working on for the past year and decided to release most of it all in a 3 day period — then say GO! New documents show that another Samsung device has hit the FCC today revealing a Galaxy S II type device rocking AT&T 4G LTE radios. This is fresh off of Tuesday’s event where AT&T announced their own Galaxy S II already (without 4G LTE).

I wasn’t sure at first but after looking closer it has the same SGH-i727 model number as Rogers’ Galaxy S II LTE, so that is where the SGSII speculation comes from, but we wont know for sure until we get more details. What we do know is the documents revealed that it will indeed have AT&T 4G LTE on board. This may be one of the first few phones launched on AT&T with LTE.

This would give the HTC Holiday a little competition and is appearing at the FCC right at the perfect time since AT&T just made the HTC Jetstream 4G LTE Tablet official. This FCC filing could also be the Samsung Impulse we saw last week. Hopefully Samsung will release some details shortly so all you AT&T users can start to debate with yourself what you should buy next.

Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6″ Player Announced

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 12:17 PM PDT

More news from Samsung today folks. As if we haven’t talked about them all week anyways, but we are now hearing they’ve also just announced the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi Music Player. You might be thinking don’t they already have a Galaxy S Player in 4 and 5″ sizes? Yup, and details on those are right here. Apparently they are now bringing a 3.6″ Galaxy S Player to market too.

With the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6″ Player they will have a better sized and priced PMP (personal music player) that will be able to compete with the iPod Touch. My first thought is why do we even need this when I don’t even use my iPod Touch myself these days. Between Google Music and Spotify on whatever Android device I’m using at that time I have no need for an iPod. Samsung see’s things a bit differently and will be bringing this to market soon.

Unlike the larger models that have Samsung Galaxy S like internals including a 1.0 Ghz Hummingbird processor like the original Galaxy S from last year, this new 3.6″ player is said to be sporting a 3.6″ 480×800 resolution display (no AMOLED), with a 1.0 Ghz TI OMAP series CPU rather than Samsung’s own (which are some of the best). Along with a 3 MP rear camera and VGA front shooter, Wi-Fi, bluetooth and all that other exciting stuff inside a phone-like device.

If iTunes and the iPod Touch isn’t your thing and you want something other than your Android smartphone for music, look no further than this upcoming portable PMP player from Samsung known as the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 Player. Stay tuned as we keep bringing all the details from IFA 2011 in the world of Android.

ARena Augmented Reality App will guide you to the DROID Bionic

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 11:55 AM PDT

The scavenger hunt for the Motorola Droid Bionic is all set to begin. Yesterday we told you about the DroidDoes.com and @DroidLanding pages being initiated for another run of prizes and giveaway thanks to Verizon and Motorola, and today we have the app to go with it.

Start by heading over to DroidDoes.com for all the details and information on the DROID Bionic scavenger hunt. It will begin in around 57 hours from now, in just over 2 days. If you didn’t catch the news yesterday this will be a scavenger hunt for the public to track down, find, and potentially win their very own DROID Bionic using the just released ARena App. This is an Augmented Reality app using your phones camera. The video below should help you understand.

Be prepared to run around town and make sure your Android phone is fully charged and up for the challenge — are you? You can download the official ARena App by clicking here or heading to the Android Market. Sadly many that are planning to search for, or buy the Bionic have the original Motorola Droid and the AR app does not work with older phones like the original Droid. So download this file here if you have an older phone and the app wont install, that should help.

Again all of the details are at DroidDoes.com and we should be hearing more details as the hunt gets closer to full initiation in t-minus 57 hours. We are also seeing commercials that are now confirming the release date for September 8th, the hunt ends on the 7th so if you don’t find what you’re searching for you can buy one soon.
