Motorola DROID Bionic on sale today, Amazon undercuts Verizon and wants $199

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 10:33 AM PDT

The wait is finally over and everyone can now head out and buy their very own DROID Bionic. Like always you can buy it at Verizonwireless.com and in stores starting today for $299. For those that don’t need the Bionic in their hands right this minute Amazon has done what they’ve done many times before and are undercutting Verizon by $100.

Before we go any further check out my epic DROID Bionic hands-on video. Then do your thing and go buy it from Amazon instead because they are offering the brand new released just today DROID Bionic 4G LTE smartphone for $199 with a new 2-year contract. You’ll have to wait for it to get delivered but we’ve waiting like 6 months, what is 2-3 more days.

With a dual-core, 4G LTE, a bright and crisp 4.3″ qHD display and the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread this is basically as good as it gets for a while. I don’t know how long this deal will last, or supplies for that matter but you better hurry because I’m sure many are ordering it as we speak. Otherwise your local Verizon Wireless store should have plenty. Let us know if you buy the Bionic, and if so tell us what you think in the comments below.

Nexus Prime Support Page up and in shambles at Samsung

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 10:15 AM PDT

As I noted yesterday when we got word of a code hidden at Samsung’s mobile webspace, the Nexus line is one that, when you get any new information on it at ALL, you’ve gotta report it. You NEED to report it because when it comes to Android, there’s basically nothing more exciting for those who love purity than a Google-certified vanilla flavoring of a version of Android OS, and in this case, it means the launching of the next big platform, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What we’ve got today is a rather preliminary looking support page for the device aka GT-I9250, this being otherwise known as the Nexus Prime.

This device is being shown here in a broken-down placeholder of a page which, when it comes down to it, doesn’t show us much of anything. On the other hand, there is a new set of supposed factoids this morning courtesy of a tipster speaking with GSM Arena. Take the following with a grain of salt, of course, but note that these are all possibilities:

“For one, our tipster says that the final name of the next Google flagship is Samsung Galaxy Nexus rather than Nexus Prime. It will have a 4.65″ screen of HD resolution – not 4.5″ WVGA. … screen is curved just like the Nexus S screen … device itself will be very thin – 8.8mm – and have a metal chassis … the launch date – at the end of October (right on the Ice Cream Sandwich schedule)” – tipster

Note again that for basically any other device we wouldn’t be as apt to publish a third-hand unnamed source like this, but these specs ring enough bells that they’re certainly inside the realm of reality. Keep your ears open and let’s get this device out of the closet sooner than later!

ALSO as a bonus, here’s our favorite well-played comment on the matter thus far:

“Galaxy Nexus is like naming your kid Ricky Bobby. Galaxy Prime would make more sense and sounds a lot better.” – Kenshiro

This man speaks truth!

HTC Rezound spotted, receives DLNA certification

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 10:05 AM PDT

Ever since HTC acquired Beats Audio we’ve been hearing bits of information regarding upcoming devices from HTC with the new audio goodness inside, and this is one more we can add to the list. The HTC Rezound just received its DLNA certification today but I did want to mention it being listed as a “mobile digital media player”. Most likely this is still a smartphone but I just wanted to throw that in there.

Who’s ready for some hip hop? Or classical if you prefer. You could even soon be listening to your choice of music with the new Beats Wireless for mobile headphones we saw a few days back on a new special edition HTC Sensation 2 with Beats Audio integration. These are just a few of the many plans HTC has now they have partnered with Beats Audio. We can expect the Beats technology and accessories to start showing up more and more.

We also saw some recent HTC trademarks such as the HTC Rhyme that will also most likely have some strong musical talents. At first we will probably see a few big name phones but I’m expecting most if not all HTC devices in the future will have Beats Audio.

Sadly, apart from the DLNA certification we don’t have any further details on the HTC Rezound (resound, sound-off) but knowing recent trends I’m sure we’ll see more pop up soon enough so stay tuned for more details.

Ice Cream Sandwich Sony Ericsson XPERIA Rumors Disspelled

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 09:34 AM PDT

If you happened to be browsing the UK site SoMobile yesterday for some mobile news, you got a heaping helping of surprise when you found that a UK spokeperson supposedly confirmed the notion that all 2011 Sony Ericsson XPERIA devices would be getting Android’s next-gen mobile OS. From what we understand given the information we got from Eric Schmidt himself, this new version of Android will be released inside October or November of 2011. What we’re to understand now is that Android 4.0 has NOT been decided on for the XPERIA 2011 lineup as of yet, this being confirmed directly to Chris Davies of SlashGear in this morning’s UK afternoon.

While this may come as a surprise to some, those of the ladies and gentlemen in the audience who know of the potential for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich can guess that Ice Cream Sandwich may not be the best system to add to an already-established line of Sony Ericsson devices. Sony Ericsson representatives spoke with SlashGear today saying the following:

"When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view." – Sony Ericsson to SG

We know from our original official introduction to Ice Cream Sandwich back at Google I/O 2011 that “This new version of Android wont have any new hardware requirements.” This means that should a device be capable of running Ice Cream Sandwich if it’s already capable of running either the tablet-based Android 3.x Honeycomb or the handset-based Android 2.3.x Gingerbread. The announcement above only covers the news that Sony Ericsson had “confirmed” they’d be upgrading their 2011 line, instead they’re just noting that there’s no official policy that they’re sharing on upgrades at the moment.

Will we see 2011 Sony Ericsson XPERIA devices upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich?

Only your barber knows for sure.

Xperia Play 4G heads to AT&T September 18

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 08:25 AM PDT

If AT&T is the network you prefer and you have been waiting for a cool Android phone to land the good news is that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G will be coming to AT&T soon. By soon we mean September 18 and the smartphone will be very cheap with a 2-year contract at only $49.99. I am sure they will sell a bunch of the devices at that price. The Xperia 4G is the PlayStation smartphone that we have covered extensively in the past.

On AT&T, the phone will not be working on a real 4G network like LTE; it will operate on the HSPA+. The smartphone will come in an exclusive stealth blue color and inside the package will be pair of bonus accessories. Those accessories are the multimedia dock DK300 and the MC100 music cable. That docking station turns the screen of the smartphone into a large clock and the music cable allows connection to external speakers.

The smartphone will also come with a bunch of free and cool games. The free game package includes Dungeon Defenders Second Wave, Asphalt 6 Adrenaline, Star Battalion, Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Tower Bloxx, and Crash Bandicoot. That hardware side is the same we are used to with a 1GHz CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Android 2.3.3, and the 4-inch 480 x 854 resolution screen with 60fps graphics. The rear camera is 5MP with a VGA front camera. What do you think, will this phone sell well on AT&T?

GetJar Gold offers premium Android apps for free!

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 06:58 AM PDT

GetJar just kicked the Amazon Appstore in the twins with the announcement of the GetJar Gold service. GetJar Gold has been in beta testing for the past month and is now ready for the public. Rather than one app you may or many not like for free, GetJar Gold gives you 50 free apps all the time with new apps added. These aren't apps of questionable quality either. GetJar gold offers some of the coolest games and apps around for free.

At launch, the free apps will include Splashtop Remote Desktop, TuneIn Radio Pro, Age of Zombies, and my favorite Fruit Ninja. If you grab all 50 of the free apps, you would save $60. The apps chosen for the store and must meet certain criteria. The can only be premium paid apps with no ads in them. Rather than a split of the proceeds from the sale, GetJar Gold will pay developers for each install of the games.

GetJar also notes that it is in talks with another big name in the app industry, but can't say who it is right now. GetJar plans to make money off the gold service by making loot off sponsored listings with developers inside the store. GetJar thinks that this will work better for developers since the user is more likely to download and install if an app is free.

Cricket Wireless offers the Samsung Vitality with Muve Music service

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:19 AM PDT

Cricket Wireless is a pre-paid carrier that has been offering more and more Android smartphones to its users. The latest addition to the company’s Android line is the Samsung Vitality smartphone. The smartphone also gets the new Cricket Muve Music service. The company will offer more handsets in the future that support the Muve Music service. The Vitality isn't a high-end Mobile phone, but it will make a nice choice for Android fans looking for no contract.

The Vitality has the ability to surf the internet at 3G speeds. The screen is a 3.5-inch HVGA touch unit that should be good for streaming media and more. The camera on the back of the device is a 3.2MP unit and it can record video as well. The CPU is an 800MHz unit and it runs Android 2.3. Other features include stereo Bluetooth tech, voice search, email capability, and access to the Android Market. The smartphone has a retail price of $219.99, but is being offered for $199.99 with a $20 instant rebate.

Cricket says that the Muve Music service is the first unlimited music service to be included as part of a wireless plan. The Muve Music service will be available next week at company owned Cricket stores and in some retail partner stores. The rate plan with unlimited music, voice, data, and text will be $65 monthly on the Vitality.

Citrix launches GoToMeeting app for Android

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 04:53 AM PDT

If you work in a setting where your coworkers are spread all around the country, city, or world you are probably familiar with GoToMeeting. This free service lets you hold virtual meetings with people from anywhere. We use it quite a bit around here to get together for one thing or another since we are scattered all around the world. If you have folks in you group that need to attend meetings, but they are never in the home or office this new app will be perfect for Android users.

A free GoToMeeting app has landed on the Android Market for download. With this app, those people who are never in the office have no excuse for not attending your meetings. The app is pre-loaded on the Droid Bionic and ready to go. The app allows the users to join a meeting by clicking a link in an email or clicking the app icon and typing in the meeting ID.

The app uses integrated VoIP audio to stream though the integrated mic and speakers on the Android device. You can also mute yourself and the background sounds using the app. The app supports portrait and landscape modes and you can see a list of the people attending the meeting.

PingMe app brings SMS alternate for chats and photo sharing

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 03:11 AM PDT

RadiumOne has launched a new app that is on the Android Market and available for the iPhone as well called PingMe. The app allows users to end that expensive text messaging plan that most of us have and go with an app that allows for direct real time chatting and sharing of photos without charges from your carrier. The catch, as with all other apps like this, is that the people you want to chat with need to have PingMe installed as well.

The company behind the app says that it is coming for more platforms as well. PingMe allows the user to create dynamic groups on the fly so chats can be had among multiple people at the same time. The service is free and offers unlimited messaging and photo sharing. Pingme also has a cool Geo Imprint feature that lets the users find each other on a map so they can meet in the real world.

Other features include Status Updates and message notifications even when the app is closed. Messages sent with the app are secured with an individual signature to let the receiver know they are real. PingMe can be downloaded now on the Android Market.

LG Optimus Note Official as dual-core Tegra 2-packing slider [Video]

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 12:04 AM PDT

While this isn’t the first time LG has come correct with a dual-core smartphone, it’s certainly the first time they’ve done so with a slide-out keyboard. With their lineup including such gems as the LG G2x, the LG G-Slate, and the Optimus 3D (aka the Thrill 4G), you’d think LG was the king of dual core. Here they prove their willingness to go strange with what may well be the device that makes their NVIDIA Tegra 2 to Qualcomm dual-core processor ratio go from 2-to-1 to 3-to-1 in an instant. Are you looking to bypass the other dual-core QWERTY slider on the block, the Droid 3? Here you go – LG Optimus Note!

This device features what ends up being an enticingly upgraded version of the Tegra 2 processor we know and love, this time clocked at 1.2GHz instead of the normal 1.0GHz. We’ve got to think about this for a second and wonder if NVIDIA will be upgrading their Tegra 2 SoC any more before the quad-core Project Kal-El chip comes out, thinking aloud “gosh, how many more phones will get one of the most spoken-about processors in the past year before NVIDIA stops production on the long-lasting line and hits the ground running with the quad?

optimusnote03-310x500 110905_4e6498de3805a 110905_4e6498c56da6d

Beyond that simple bit of excellence, this device is set to have a cool set of specs that’d be right at home in your everyday dual-core seeking US citizens pocket – but note, as this device has thus far only shown up in the product lists of one carrier, that carrier being LG U+ in South Korea, there IS a chance that this device might never make it here to the states. Then again, the Optimus 3D and the Optimus 2X were already popular internationally before they hit the USA shores earlier this year, so who knows, really?

shot32 shotes

This device has a Nova LCD Display (700nit) with 800 x 480 pixel WVGA resolution, HDMI support through what’s likely a microHDMI port, Bluetooth 3.0, full QWERTY keyboard, VGA camera on the front, a surprisingly small 5-megapixel camera on the back, 8GB ROM, 1G DDR2 RAM, and Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread at launch. We’re hoping that South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission didn’t put a stopper on production of these cool units via Google, while we’ve also got to wonder if releasing this slightly lesser-great device amongst the DROID BIONIC and the Galaxy S II here in the states wouldn’t be unwise at the moment – perhaps an upgrade before coming on over the pond guns blazing?

The candid photos you see above come from South Korean blog Cetizen, while the slightly more pro-looking pics come from the LG U+ ad spot you’re about to see in the video in this post. Watch for the LG Optimus Note’s unmistakable (yet keyboard pushed-in) visage near the end of the spot. Tok tok tok indeed!

T-Mobile prepping stores for a busy “All Hands Day” September 24th

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 04:37 PM PDT

We have heard a few rumors but are now seeing what seems to be a internal document floating around emails at T-Mobile aimed and gearing up the staff for an upcoming event. Details are a bit light still but we are now seeing similar reports to what we original heard rumors about, those are that T-Mobile has some big plans coming later in September, specifically September 24th.

That Saturday has been listed as an “all hands day” for T-Mobile stores nationwide — meaning that all available staff must be prepped and ready to rock for what we are assuming is a big release date of some sort. The first thing that comes to mind is the Samsung Galaxy S II that is headed for T-Mobile. It was recently announced and said to be coming this fall. AT&T plans to launch their SGSII a few days earlier so maybe T-Mobile is trying to get it to market soon to better compete.

I don’t even wanna say this but it could also be the rumored iPhone 5 for T-Mobile, but I won’t go any farther into that discussion or I’ll get angry and start throwing things. Most likely this day will be all about Samsung and the Galaxy S II (Hercules) for T-Mobile but we wont know until more details come forward. It’s also slightly possible that some variation of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 or 10.1 might also be landing that day. Suspicious indeed, hopefully we know more soon.

HTC Status Free and Motorola Triumph $250 this week at Target

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 04:00 PM PDT

It’s no mistake that we’ve got more than a couple posts each week regarding Target Superstore, it’s just logical – yours truly lives in the heart of the beast, the birthplace of Target itself, Minneapolis / Saint Paul, Minnesota. The ad you see below was photographed inside the Target which sits on the very ground where the first Target in the world once stood (unfortunately it was terrible, apparently, and they had to knock it down to make way for a much better building to house Target once again.) Wild! Now that you’ve got the facts, let’s talk about these devices on sale: three of them are running Android and all three of them have a deal attached.

First there’s the most awesome nearly-vanilla Motorola device by the name of Virgin Mobile Triumph. This is a device we first laid eyes on in NYC when we came to realize the awesomeness of the truth: it was the first time Motorola had offered a device as stripped down as this at an off-contract price as low as this, and it was being carried by Virgin Mobile no less. Check out our review of this device then note that when you purchase this device for $299.99 off contract here at Target, you get a $50 gift card for free. Use it to bump up your microSD card for more awesome Android action.

Then there’s the HTC Status [aka HTC ChaCha] [internationally, that is] carried by AT&T. While we’d recently heard rumors that this device’s end of life would be much sooner than anyone could have possibly guessed, we’ve got a soft spot in our hearts for the uniquely wonderful keyboard from back when we reviewed the device a few weeks ago. Beyond that it’s what they’ve called “The Facebook Phone” because there’s literally a physical Facebook button sitting near the bottom of it. Also get yourself a unique flavor of HTC Sense with this landscape oriented display on a portrait-style smartphone. The deal here is that while this device is inexpensive in the first place at $29.99 (or $399.99 off-contract), you can get it for free today from Target with a 2-year contract.

Finally there’s the low to mid-tier T-Mobile Samsung Gravity Smart. We reviewed this device and found it to be acceptably filled with Android, but not a whole lot more beyond that. It’s a Samsung device, it’s got a nice look to it, and today you can get it for free on a 2-year contract. Tough decision you’ve got here.

Amazon rewarding developers $50 for submitting apps to the Amazon App Store

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 03:51 PM PDT

Amazon looks to grow their app store and seem to really be ramping up the efforts on the Android front. With the possibility of an Android tablet coming soon and more, they are getting ready to start offering rewards to developers that opt to submit their apps into the Amazon App Store. Yay, That reward is $50 dollars.

Amazon will be offering starting today through November 15th, a $50 dollar credit for Amazon Web Services (AWS) for all developers that submit applications for approval. More details can be found over at amazonappstoredev.com and while it’s not a lot, $50 is $50 dollars right? Amazon's AWS offers a variety of cloud-computing services and solutions that is used by a large portion of online businesses.

Developers can use the AWS to help build and update their apps, with unlimited cloud storage for updates, social network updates, integration and more. Developers can also use the AWS for things like messaging for mobile-to-mobile communication and chat type apps too. There are plenty of options and uses available and all of that and more is available at amazonappstoredev.com.

This ends mid November right in time for when recent sources have been claiming Amazon will launch the Amazon Kindle Tablet powered by Android. It seems Amazon wants to have an impressive App Store to go along with this major launch, and it totally makes sense. What do you think?

Oracle vs Google Android lawsuit to End

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 03:33 PM PDT

It’s been over a year since we first reported that Oracle was looking into a suit against Google for its perceived infringement of their Java code, and we’ve finally come to a point where it appears that both parties are willing to reach, maybe, perhaps, a settlement. This settlement may well come in this newest announced move for a mediation meeting between representatives from Google and representatives from Oracle, this newest move sparking talk about how serious Google is taking the case and questions over whether or not they’re prepared to defend themselves in a case that could, ultimately, believe it or not, end up in the destruction of Android as we know it today.

One of the most interesting very possibly related events to surround this whole situation is the announcement last week that Java creator James Gosling would be leaving Google after only 6 months on the job. His tenure with the group starting and ending at the start and possible end of this, at first glance, unrelated court case. After that, is all obvious factoids.

A big drop of information came earlier this year when a mister Florian Mueller found code which he saw as evidence against Google in the very case we’re speaking about now. Later the same month we found this evidence to be bunk for the most part – to which Mueller came back and said that he’d found six more files to be considered in the case. We saw Oracle supposedly deleting a blog post showing their CEO’s approval of Java in Android, then a few more stories popped up about a seemingly unrelated few talks between Google and Microsoft on patents – war, war I tell you!

BONUS from our sister-site SlashGear: in July of 2011 the still relatively new Google CEO Larry Page was the subject of a 2 hour grilling on the case.

Today we’ve gotten word that both parties have agreed to walk toward one another without weapons of any kind, no knives, no clubs, no sharp sticks, and settle this thing like good god-fearing Americans – or whatever well-mannered law-abiding citizens are called these days. Both groups have released statements:

Google writes:

Google welcomes the Court’s suggestion that the parties participate in a mediation of this case before a Magistrate Judge. Google does not object to participating in a mediation before a Magistrate Judge who is not otherwise involved in this case.

Google recognizes the importance of having top executives of the parties attend the Court-ordered mediation. Google proposes that Andrew Rubin, who is Senior Vice President, Mobile and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer, attend for Google together with Kent Walker, Vice President and General Counsel of Google. Mr. Rubin’s executive responsibilities include all of Google's mobile business, of which the Android business is a part. Mr. Rubin is knowledgeable regarding the issues in this case and he is fully empowered to resolve this matter on reasonable terms.

Google also understands from counsel for Oracle that they propose that Safra Catz and Thomas Kurian attend on behalf of Oracle — and Google agrees with this choice. Ms. Catz is one of two Presidents of Oracle who, like Mr. Rubin, reports directly to Oracle’s Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Rubin and Ms. Catz were involved in previous discussions involving the subject matter at issue in this case.

Oracle writes:

Oracle concurs with the Court's view that an additional attempt at settlement of the case through mediation before a United State Magistrate Judge is warranted. Oracle has found previous efforts at settlement, including private discussions between the parties, frustrating for lack of follow-through, and believes that those efforts have not exhausted the possibilities for resolving the case.

As suggested by the Court, Oracle considers it essential that both parties bring top-level executives. Accordingly, Oracle's executive representatives in the mediation before the Magistrate Judge will be Safra Catz, President of Oracle Corporation, and Thomas Kurian, Executive Vice President of Oracle Product Development.

Oracle will strive to make its representatives available as necessary and proposes that the mediation occur before the end of September.

It is Judge William Alsup who presides over this case and who has suggested such a mediation before the case heads to jury. Oracle’s Safra Catz, is generally considered by a whiz when it comes to this sort of talk, while Florian Mueller, who just seems to keep popping up in this epic story somehow, says:

The choice of Andy Rubin and Google’s General Counsel Kent Walker is very questionable. While Google can’t be penalized for the fact that it doesn’t give anyone the title of “President”, those two executives are clearly not at a level with Safra Catz.

Without a doubt we’ve still got a little while before this case is settled for real, but because the stakes are so high, we’ve just GOT to keep you updated on the proceedings and all the little jabs and cuts. What do you think will end up happening? Will Oracle win? Or will Google emerge victorious with a stomach full of Oracle airplane?

HTC Sensation 4G CyanogenMod nightly builds coming shortly

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 03:01 PM PDT

I’ve been seeing a bit of comments as of late from many different places regarding the HTC Sensation and its CyanogenMod 7 status. Today I figured I’d give you all a small update to let you all know that it is coming, and soon. While technically I don’t know this for sure, the main man behind CM7 on the Sensation is Keyan Mobli (aka kmobs) and he’s been updating us occasionally on Google+ and the past few days we’ve received good news.

It has been about a month since we’ve seen anything regarding the Sensation 4G and CM7 and last we mentioned it was in this video teaser. Thanks to kmobs we now know that they basically just have one more bug or so to get over and we will start seeing nightly builds very soon.

Only one real issue remains that blocks CM7 for Sensation from nightly status. We’re really close guys.

Keyan also mentions that he’s been using CM7 on his Sensation 4G as his daily phone for a few weeks now and the pure speed, and consistency they are getting makes it one of the fastest phones he’s used. You can read all about that and his comments by checking out his Google+ at +Keyan Mobli.

Then another update came last night mentioning that once they get the camera fully working CM7 nightly builds for the HTC Sensation 4G will be able to start and that they’ve made some huge progress. From the comments it appears they’ve almost fixed all the bugs. From the looks of things and recent updates it sounds like we might be seeing CM7 on the HTC Sensation for the masses come sometime next week. I can’t wait!

In case you’ve yet to unlock the bootloader on your phone you can get started with that right here. Or use the community provided way and achieve an unlocked bootloader, root, and a custom recovery using the Revolutionary tool.

CyanogenMod 7 for the HTC Sensation 4G is coming soon, keep calm and don’t ask for ETA’s and it will be here before you know it.

Motorola DROID 3 OTA update coming soon

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:54 PM PDT

Well, the Motorola Droid 3 hasn’t been out too long but it is already set to get an over the air update soon, possibly sometime this week. Something we have heard of many times is about to start and that is a “soak test” for the over the air update. This update should hopefully fix a slew of small problems plaguing the device since launch such as battery issues and what not, as well as hopefully add Google Talk voice chat capabilities with Android 2.3.4

In case you missed our amazing rundown of the Motorola Droid 3 you can see our review by clicking here. In the photo below is a copy of an email sent out to many readers and Droid 3 owners that will take part in the “soak test” to make sure the update is ready for the masses and will start rolling out to all users a few days following, as long as no issues are found that are show stoppers.

We’d like to hear from our readers. If you are experiencing any issues with your Droid 3 feel free to drop us a comment below and we will be sure to check on it. Hopefully this update comes sooner than later and will fix any issues users are having but I’ve not heard any large complaints thus far. Stand-by as the update should be starting soon in the next week or two.

Nexus Prime Confirmed again via Unlisted Samsung Code

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:31 PM PDT

When it comes to leaked information about Android devices, the name Nexus (or Nexus Prime in this case) ranks up there with ravenous hoards of Android-based automatons bent on the destruction of the human race – and Nexus isn’t going to kill you, so that’s saying something! What we’ve got today is another leak of information from Samsung on their upcoming device very likely called the Nexus Prime. What this magical mystical future device is said to be holding is the first and most vanilla flavored Ice Cream Sandwich of them all, and today Samsung has been discovered to be hosting a webpage that all but confirms the handset’s existence.

It is at /uaprof/NexusPrime.xml in Samsung Mobile’s webpage guts that you can for yourself see the clues as they present themselves plainly. We can now be pretty sure that not only is Samsung preparing to deliver a device by the name of Nexus Prime, but we can see that this device, codenamed GT-I9250, will have what can only be described as a surprisingly tiny 480 x 800 pixel WVGA resolution display. While this does seem to present itself as a devastatingly small specification for a display on a device that’s set to hold the next big generation of Android mobile OS, it is possible that Samsung placed such a number in the code to throw publishers like us off the trail. Sneaky of them!

This device is more than likely set to be released inside 2011, with another factoid presenting itself in the form of a camera spec allowing us an additional clue as to the true innards of the device. What we can see here is the MMS Max Image Resolution set at 1200 x 1600 pixels. Will this MMS, often also the main camera’s resolution numbers as well, be what we can expect from the camera itself, or is Samsung setting us up for a fooling once again?

Then there’s a quite separate account of Ice Cream Sandwich we’ve got to pay attention to, this one being spoken, perhaps mistakenly so though I doubt it, by none other than Eric Schmidt at this year’s Dreamforce conference in San Francisco:

"We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone's really excited about." – Schmidt

Check that spoken aloud in the video below at about halfway through:

Finally, and this is a bit off topic, there’s an image floating around these Android internets that you’ve likely seen before, this being a vector-illustrated Transformer set inside the Nexus X logo, as seen below. I’d like here to let you know who made this image so you can revel in his awesome works: head to the online portfolio of ~nviii~Surberus to not only get a large-sized image of the bot, but a wallpaper of it as well. Win!

Motorola DROID Bionic being sold through Verizon phone sales

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 01:04 PM PDT

In cased you guys missed it the Motorola DROID Bionic is finally official today. It will be available starting tomorrow September 8th, so you better hurry and go wait in line tomorrow morning, or do you. A few readers and tips are starting to flood in this afternoon that Verizon’s phone sales are actually taking orders if you get lucky.

With buyers choosing overnight shipping the BIONIC could be on your doorstep tomorrow morning rather than running to a nearly store and dealing with that drama. This isn’t confirmed but we have received more than a few reports on this so feel free to give it a try and hopefully order your own amazingly fast 4G LTE Bionic.

If you would like to give the phone sales a try and hopefully reserve a Bionic for yourself feel free to call *611 from a Verizon phone, or 1-800-256-4646 from any other phone. Oh and as an added bonus another Bionic commercial has leaked online although the quality seems to be lacking, check it out below.

Samsung Stratosphere Verizon 4G LTE Slider hits the FCC

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 12:46 PM PDT

The Samsung SCH-i405 better known as Verizon’s 4G LTE rocking Samsung Stratosphere, passed through the FCC today with what obviously are 4G LTE bands on board. It was only a matter of time for the Stratosphere to make a visit to the FCC, not to mention we’ve already seen plenty of press images leak.

I personally welcome 4G LTE phones in the mid-range price offering and it appears Verizon has more than a few planned. Between the Stratosphere and the Pantech Breakout they are off to a good start. Seeing the Samsung Stratosphere finally clear the FCC makes us believe we will be seeing this device hit the streets rather soon, but we can’t be for sure.

A recently leaked roadmap marks the Stratosphere down for a September 8th release along with the DROID Bionic but chances are this mid-range LTE phone is still a few weeks away. The Stratosphere is basically a Samsung Epic 4G with Verizon 4G LTE, with similar specs to a Galaxy S device and not a SGSII.

More options are always welcome, and a 4G LTE slider should make a few people happy, stay tuned for more details.

NVIDIA CEO talks Quad-cores and the future of mobile CPU’s

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 12:33 PM PDT

In a recent sit-down, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang broke down all sorts of good news for the mobile industry and Android. Not afraid to talk about business or revenue Huang safely discussed the future of Android tablets, quad-core processors and NVIDIA's role as a hardware manufacturer for Android and mobile devices.

Moving on to revenues, Huang said analysts had predicted $4.45 billion for NVIDIA and the company is expected to post figures in the $4.7 billion to $5 billion range and beat most expectations. Then moving on to the future he also noted that new devices running the Kal-El quad-core NVIDIA chips should hit stores in Q4 putting them in time for the holiday season, but slightly later than the original projections. This is both good and bad news because at least we have official word that they are coming this year, but bad because they might be later than expected.

With mobile markets and the mobile processor industry only getting bigger and bigger NVIDIA will continue to aim more focus on these markets. With big plans for Q4 2011 and even more for 2012 they have some exciting things ahead of them. With the recent acquisition of Icera, NVIDIA will be integrating 3G/4G wireless modem chipsets into their Tegra processors for an all-in-one solution to better compete with the likes of Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments.

Huang briefly mentions part of the initial delays for the quad-core Kal-El is for changes as they continue to make improvements to increase efficiency and performance. I have a feeling NVIDIA has more than just quad-core tablets and phone planned for 2012 but we will just have to wait and see. The next few months should be really exciting in the world of Android. Then again isn’t every month exciting?
