| NFL 2011 App for Honeycomb Tablets Posted: 10 Sep 2011 11:16 AM PDT Just in time for Football to officially get started yesterday the NFL has released their official NFL 2011 app for Android tablets. This requires Android 3.0 or higher and so far it is amazing. I’m way too excited about this because the NFL Mobile app from Verizon doesn’t support tablets and everything else just doesn’t compare. Watching highlight videos and checking news in amazing quality built specifically for the 10″ display looks incredible. Well done NFL, well done!
So far this application seems to have it all. From amazing HD graphics and images, drive-by-drive plays, stats for my fantasy tracking and more. They really hit the nail on the head here. With NFL Network live coverage of games, video highlights and even up-to-date by the minute news all streamed from NFL Network this is just amazing. Video highlights are solid and you have no idea how excited this makes me. I’ve snapped some screenshots on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and video playback looks great. I was able to watch every scoring play from the Packers game in about 2 minutes — awesome! Game and scoring highlight video streaming With each team listed you can see who is playing, what time, and where as well as the station it will be broadcast. This is truly the ultimate NFL tool for football fans. The image below shows all the current games for week one and when they actually get under way a box on the left appears showing what quarter, halftime, or final. Oh man, I don’t even know what else to say this really is just amazing and anyone that enjoys football should grab this immediately. Oh and it’s free in case you were wondering. With this app you can keep up with game action, all the stats, and you even get drive charts. With team rosters, stats, and player info you have everything you need. When a game is over you can even see the entire teams stats like in the image below showing Aaron Rodgers and team’s impressive week 1 numbers. This is available exclusively for Android Honeycomb tablets and is available right now for FREE in the market by clicking here. During my hands-on time I took a few screenshots so check them all out in the gallery below. [via Android Market] ) |
| Samsung Epic 4G Touch Pre-Orders from Walmart for $99 Posted: 09 Sep 2011 04:25 PM PDT The much awaited launch in the U.S for the Samsung Galaxy S II is just a week or so away with the Epic 4G Touch headed to the now network with 4G WiMAX on board. The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (yes that is the full name) was officially announced back on August 30th, and said to be coming September 16th for just $199. Walmart is aiming to get a piece and have opened pre-orders.
For a little hands-on pictures and video with the Epic 4G Touch check out this as it should help you decide if this awesome phone is for you. With a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage and an amazingly crisp, clear, and bright 4.5″ AMOLED display what else do you need. I’d take a quad-core but that is about it. At what I like to call Wallyworld you can now pre-order the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch for only $99 dollars and be one of the lucky few to get it on launch date next week. Head down to your nearest Walmart or just feel free to order it by clicking here. At the moment I think I’d take the Epic 4G Touch or the Droid Bionic if I was in the market for a new phone. What would you pick? [via Phandroid] ) |
| Android “Jelly Bean” up next after Ice Cream Sandwich Posted: 09 Sep 2011 04:03 PM PDT We have heard all sorts of crazy names for our favorite green robot OS and it appears we now have some official details about the next version. According to what we are hearing are “trusted” sources the next version of Android will in fact be called “Jelly Bean”. This will follow Ice Cream Sandwich which is the next version of Android coming shortly.
Following right along with Androids outstanding list of previous OS names such as Donut, Eclair, FroYo, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and now apparently Jelly Bean. I like it and immediately think of those tasty 40 flavors of Jelly Belly’s. What is next Key Lime Pie and then Licorice? Remember they can’t be trademarked otherwise Google would get sued. Now I want some Jelly Belly’s.
While this has just the wire we don’t have any further details. Google still hasn’t given any sort of clear indication of what they will call Ice Cream Sandwich. It might be 2.4, 2.5, or 3.5 or even Android 4.0 so for Jelly Bean we truly have no idea. Reports also suggest some of the larger “game changing” changes coming to Android are being pushed back to Jelly Bean rather than hitting the streets with ICS. We recently saw some leaked photo’s of what could be ICS so take that last bit of information as you’d like. We don’t know fully yet what ICS will bring to the table but expected it to bridge Gingerbread and Honeycomb. While I’m patiently awaiting ICS, I’m already starting to crave some Jelly Bean. | Herotab M6 Android 2.3 Tablet just $159 Posted: 09 Sep 2011 03:43 PM PDT For those out there looking for a budget Android tablet I may have found one for you. What we have here is the Herotab M6, this is a nice budget tablet with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a few other decent specs that makes it worth the low price of just $159. That and it comes with free shipping and a free screen protector.
Don’t get me wrong this is nothing fancy whatsoever, but we do get a decent 7″ display that is actually capacitive touch. Most cheap tabs have terrible resistive panels. Also included is a speedy 1 Ghz processor, 8GB internal storage, micro-SD support for extended storage and even a full-sized USB port. It might not be the thinnest tablet but it’s also a great price. They look to have added some nice on-screen controls to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread as we have no standard Android buttons other than the dedicated home button. All of this is only $159 at kgbdeals.com. We might not have a 10″ display or Honeycomb but to have a 1.0 Ghz CPU, 8GB storage and Gingerbread all for that price this is hard to pass up. We know nothing of build quality or anything else but from the picture it appears decent. Give it a chance you might like it. [via kgbdeals] ) |
| Motorola Droid 3 Update “Soak Test” Started, Brings tons of bug fixes Posted: 09 Sep 2011 02:56 PM PDT Earlier in the week we mentioned the Droid 3 was set to receive an OTA update starting sometime soon. Now Verizon has made it official and posted up the details and support docs for us over at Verizon Support. According to information the Droid 3 OTA update is in the “soak test” stage and will be ready soon.
Like we have seen many times before, and assuming the soak test goes well we should see this update rolled out officially to the masses within the next week or so. If they spot any bugs it may get delayed so we will have to wait and see. The biggest benefit seems to be full support for Google Voice video chat because the Droid 3 does run on Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, as well as some battery improvements.
As well as the few updates mentioned above you can see plenty more in the image thanks to Verizon. Some of the notable updates include streaming of the Verizon Wireless NFL Mobile app (didn’t know that was an issue), GoToMeeting now works with the Droid 3, and a few bug fixes to the Swype keyboard that comes pre-installed. We also see many other improvements and bug fixes as well as upgrades to call quality so this should be a decent update for all your D3 users. Again this is just getting started but should start hitting devices as early as sometime next week. [via Verizon Support] ) |
| Netflix for Android updated to support all Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices Posted: 09 Sep 2011 02:29 PM PDT Netflix for Android was just updated in the Android market and this has been a long time coming if you ask me. Apparently Netflix has finally got around to adding support for not some but ALL Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices. Back in May it was updated with like 5 new phones supported and many weren’t impressed then in June Netflix added Gingerbread support.
I’m glad they’ve finally updated to support everyone as this was getting a bit old and users were starting to resort to other measures to enable Netflix support. Some of the recent updates without mentioning it also enabled most tablets to work although the quality is a bit lacking. I’m still hopeful that Netflix will release an app for Honeycomb tablets soon. Now with the latest update almost everyone except for the few running overly old phones will now have complete access to Netflix on Android, something we should have seen months and months ago. Better late than never right guys? Even the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 works over LTE with a little root magic but I have a feeling this latest update will make root no longer be required for many tablet users. For all us tablet owners we will have to keep waiting for an official tablet app, but all you phone users can rejoice with this latest update. Head down to the source link to download. | Tursion TS-102 is an Android powered Pico Projector, Looks Awesome Posted: 09 Sep 2011 01:03 PM PDT You may not know much about the company Tursion, or their pico projector aspirations but this next product I’m about to show you looks impressive indeed. I want one already. This is the Tursion TS-102 Android powered pico projector. While I do have a few complaints with some of the specs, I can already see my gadget addicted self caving in and buying one just because I can.
Remember the Samsung Beam? It was supposed to be an Android phone with a projector but I’m not sure what happened to that. What we have here is no phone, this is all projector and the specs include a odd powered 624MHz dual-core processor of some type, a lens capable of projecting an 800×600 image up to 100-inches in size at 20 lumens. Above I mentioned a few specs I wished were better and that mainly is the resolution output and the OS. We have an outdated Android 2.1 Eclair here. I can work with that but Gingerbread would be sweet.
This is where it gets awesome though. It has 8GB internal storage as well as micro-SD support for additional games or movies. Then they have a trackpad right on top of the device for controlling and navigating the projected Android goodness. With Wi-Fi, buttons for controlling Android and video playback as well as 80 minutes of battery life I could have some fun with this thing. Currently available on Amazon but it’s priced a bit steep at $449. I’m not sure why but I totally want one. [via Engadget] ) |
| Sharp Announces new 3D Aquos SH8298U Android phone sporting dual 8MP cameras Posted: 09 Sep 2011 12:18 PM PDT Sharp has another 3D handset in the pipes running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. You may think the LG Optimus 3D or HTC EVO 3D were first but it was in fact Sharp a long time ago with the announcement back in November, 2010. They later released that phone in May of this year well ahead of LG or HTC and now we are starting to see images of their next creation.
The Aquos SH8298U is an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone with dual 8 MP cameras capable of full 1080p HD video capture in full 3D. It comes with a 4.2″ glasses-free 3D display with qHD 960×540 resolution. We have a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 1.4 Ghz single-core CPU with 512MB of RAM, 2GB internal storage and more. Everything looks pretty awesome except for the weak 1,240 mAh battery listed. Even sporting HDMI-Out for 3D playback and a dedicated camera button thanks to the Sharp SH8298U product page.
Other then the battery everything else about the phone looks quite impressive. We’d rather have a dual-core but the dual 8 MP cameras make up for that for those interested in the 3D technology. The EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D both sport dual 5 MP cameras so this new phone from Sharp has a pretty good boost in camera performance. With at least two colors to choose from, a front facing camera, and that nice aluminum wrapped exterior I wouldn’t mind seeing this phone in the U.S but sadly it’s aimed only for Softbank in Japan at the moment. Do you still think 3D is a gimmick or would you buy this now it has better recording and capture ability with both cameras being 8 MP? [via PocketNow] ) |
| HTC Media Event set for September 20th, something new coming Posted: 09 Sep 2011 11:46 AM PDT HTC is passing around some special invitations to their next big media event, and it’s all set to begin on September 20th where we are invited to celebrate with them in style. This is just hitting the wires and we are already starting to wonder what they might be showcasing coming up on the 20th. The HTC Jetstream was just released, and they have a few Windows Phone devices coming but I have a feeling this will be all Android.
Who has a guess of what we might be seeing? First thing that comes to mind is the HTC Vigor as we’ve seen bits and pieces of it lately and it just cleared the FCC today. Last we heard the Vigor could launch sometime in October but with the Bionic just landed and the Galaxy S II hitting many carriers soon it would make sense to try and get the word out soon for the next big HTC phone. We did see some pictures recently claiming to be the Vigor, so it’s out and in the wild and ready to be released. What do you guys think? Another possibility is the HTC Sensation 2 with Beats Audio or something along those lines now that HTC officially has acquired Beats Audio. September 20th NYC also has fashion week going on so we might see that HTC Bliss phone designed for women, just a thought. We will be there live either way so make sure to stay tuned right here at Android Community. ) |
| Samsung Galaxy S II now available for only $99 from GCI in Alaska Posted: 09 Sep 2011 11:21 AM PDT Yup, it looks like the Epic Touch 4G wont actually be the first Galaxy S II to officially land here in the U.S. because Alaska’s popular local network GCI beat everyone to the shipping yard. We are now seeing GCI offering the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G for only $99 dollars.
Apparently it is available now to buy in stores, as well as online over at GCI Wireless. We are even hearing reports a few northerners have actually already purchased and are enjoying the Galaxy S II superphone. The best part about this is GCI not only beat everyone to market but they are offering it for just $99 dollars, about $100 less than anyone else at the moment.
We don’t have a lot of details but most likely this is the same 1.2 GHz 4.3″ AMOLED powered model that we’ve seen across Europe and not the 4.5″ version that is headed to T-Mobile shortly. Looking at the CGI device list it looks like a stock SGSII with the 2 capacitive buttons and dedicated home button in the middle rather than 4 capacitive buttons. Either way this is exciting for those in Anchorage and other parts of Alaska off in the wilderness. Stop fishing for those king salmon and head down to CGI Wireless and get the new Galaxy S II.
