| Motorola Electrify headed to US Cellular Posted: 12 Sep 2011 11:51 AM PDT Well folks, it looks like U.S. Cellular users can look forward to an excellent phone coming as soon as this month. Better known as the Motorola Photon 4G the name will instead be the Electrify and goes right in line with previous statements from US Cellular regarding an upcoming 4.3″ device from Motorola. It looks like they’ve had this dual-core powerhouse planned for a while.
US Cellular is aiming to keep up with the big guys in mobile and have said they have even more Android phones coming soon. With the Motorola Electrify you get a top tier Android devices running with a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1.0 Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, a 4.3″ qHD 540 x 960 display, 16GB internal storage and a beefy 8MP camera on the rear with dual LED flash. We also are happy to mention the kickstand since everyone loved that on the EVO and Thunderbolt.
With US Cellular making it official today we can expect to see the Motorola Electrify within the next few weeks to line up with the “coming this month” statement. With a kickstand, HDMI-Out, and Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread what else do you need? It will be offered for just $199 with a new 2-year contract per the usual rules but sadly that is after a $100 mail in rebate. Don’t we all love rebates? With no official date set yet it should be here shortly so those on US Cellular don’t have to wait long so stay tuned. Device Info

| HTC considering the purchase of its own Android OS alternative Posted: 12 Sep 2011 11:19 AM PDT While HTC has been extremely successful in both Android and Windows Mobile OS platforms we have been hearing a bit of chatter about the possibility of HTC acquiring and designing their own Android OS alternative to call their own. Obviously this can be speculated when a company as big as HTC is so successful with smartphones but we are getting details that they’ve even been discussing this “internally” according to sources.
We heard rumors last year regarding a similar situation where there was mention of their own OS but that was about it. Now, HTC chairwoman Cher Wang has said a few comments regarding this again according to Focus Taiwan.
Obviously with such huge potential and an ever growing mobile market they are probably open to some sort of purchase. We have heard rumors regarding HP’s Web OS and those are starting to appear more and more recently now that HP has canceled that little project. We have heard reports that HP has no plans to sell Web OS but you never know what the future holds. HTC has a unique position because they can potentially use any OS they want as they’ve developed and improved their highly popular Sense UI into many different platforms such as Windows Mobile, Android, and now Honeycomb too. HTC’s Sense is a very complex and thought out user interface with many integrations that make it able to stand on its own. With cloud gaming, streaming media with HTC Live, HTC Watch and Onlive they have more to offer than most. Whether they’d leave their current cash crop, Android behind is another story and something I doubt we’ll see for a while if ever. While HTC doesn’t have a single OS of their own to focus on, their Sense UI is as close to one as any user interface will ever be and have plenty of work regarding that and Android. As long as HTC’s amazing build quality and innovation keeps up with Android I see nothing but good things ahead and I’m sure they do too. [via SlashGear] ) |
| LG Univa will be the LG Optimus Hub Posted: 12 Sep 2011 10:37 AM PDT The recently seen The LG Univa E510 that has leaked a few times including some recent press shots and then pictured in the wild today received a name and a bit more details. It will be known as the LG Optimus Hub and for starters will be headed to Italy and eventually making the rounds elsewhere.
It should be landing sometime early October and be an awesome entry level smartphone. The specs we have already heard but in case you missed it the Optimus Hub will feature a 3.5″ HVGA display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a decent little 800 Mhz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, a 5.0 MP camera on the rear with no LED flash and a decent little thin design.
While the specs may not be anything special and having only an 800 Mhz CPU makes it more an entry level phone than a mid-range device. That does ensures it will come with an awesome price tag though. We can expect some good deals on this phone and most likely it will be as popular as the high selling Optimus One. Add a LED flash and a slightly larger screen and this would be the perfect entry level phone in my opinion. When we hear about more regions and availability we will report back with the details. | CyanogenMod 7 Alpha now available for HTC Sensation and EVO 3D Posted: 12 Sep 2011 10:03 AM PDT After a few teaser videos and screenshots over the past month or so the time has finally arrived and we now have CyanogenMod 7 for the HTC Sensation and EVO 3D. If you’ve been patiently awaiting its arrival you can now download and get to flashing this awesome ROM for your phone and we have details below.
For now this is still a early stage of CM7 for the HTC Sensation and EVO 3D and is currently just an alpha build. With the source not being available in the CyanogenMod source trees yet for developers to compile their own, it should be shortly. For those happy to finally have this (like me) feel free to thank +Keyan Mobli and his team for the hard work. Here are a few instructions below for those that might be new.
For starters as always this and any of the steps required will void any warranty you have so do this at your own risk. First you must unlock and root your device using one of two methods. Use the Revolutionary Tool that will also root and install clockworkmod as that is the easiest way, or go the official HTCdev.com/bootloader route and unlock your bootloader thanks to HTC’s new policies, then root and install CWM from XDA or another source like ROM Manager. Once you get that far the rest is easy as pie just do a nandroid backup, wipe your device and flash the latest CM7 build for the Sensation or EVO 3D followed by the Google Apps add-on and you are all set and running smooth. For those wondering about benchmark results my HTC Sensation running CM7 scored around 2800 on Quadrant, before I could barely break 2300 if I was lucky. For full details, change-logs and all the instructions from start to finish for both the Sensation and EVO 3D head over to kmobs Google+ at +Keyan Mobli for all the links and information. Enjoy! | GameStop testing Android Gaming Tablet pre 2012 launch Posted: 12 Sep 2011 09:39 AM PDT Word on the street is that there’s going to be a new gaming tablet… on the streets. GameStop company president Tony Bartel has commented this week about how they’re currently in testing mode for an Android-based tablet that they’ve also already started working on a gaming controller for as well. This tablet will be, as Bartel calls it, a "GameStop certified gaming platform" and that it’ll start with a few games and build up and up and up and explode all over the gaming industry similar to what we’ve seen (to a degree) with OnLive with HTC and other related groups.
Could this finally be the legendary Kyocera Katsura “Gaming Tablet”? We think not, but it’s interesting to see how only a few months ago we were putting that term in quotation marks because it seemed perhaps to be a bit absurd, or certainly relatively unheard of at that point. The quote above about the “certified gaming platform” comes from an interview between Bartel and GamesIndustry in which they also once again confirm the Android portion of this equation. More than likely there will be the mentioned wireless controller connecting via bluetooth, this soon to capitalize on what’s about to be a rather explosive external controller-controlled Android gaming market.
Like what we’ve seen for a while with processor manufacturers such as NVIDIA, GameStop will be working with developers to create games specifically workable with wireless gaming controllers so that the industry GameStop intends on capitalizing upon does, indeed, exist. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Fusion Garage pares Grid 10 tablet price down to $299 Posted: 12 Sep 2011 08:56 AM PDT We have talked about Fusion Garage’s Grid 10 before. The company makes some tablets that look interesting, but have been hampered by pricing that was more than many were willing to pay. The company has announced that it is cutting $200 off the starting price of the Grid 10 tablet. We talked about the Grid 10 tablet back in August. The tablet uses an OS called Grid that is based on Android.
The tablet had been targeting a launch date of September 15, but the tablet will now have a bit of a delay in shipping with the ship date pushed back to October 1. A few extra weeks insn’t too bad considering the price cut. Previously the 16GB WiFi only tablet was $499 with a version featuring 3G and WiFi at $599. The price as of today is $299 for the WiFi version and $399 for the WiFi and 3G version. Fusion Garage told Engadget that it has always intended to launch the tablets at the current prices. According to the company, negotiations with an ODM left them unable to tout the lower prices until now. Will you try the Grid 10 at the lower prices? [via Engadget] ) |
| Orb live comes to Android with free Hulu content access in tow Posted: 12 Sep 2011 08:37 AM PDT
The app has no subscription fee, but the purchase price makes it expensive for an App at $9.99. The Orb Live service requires you to install Orb caster on your PC or Mac, which is a free download. The program needs to be aimed at the multimedia folders on your computer. You can create a remote account and then streaming your video and content to your mobile device. This is how it is getting around the Hulu block of free content on mobile devices. The content is streaming to the PC from Hulu and is then remotely accessed by the Android device. You will need an always-on internet connection at home and the computer needs to be on for Orb Live to work naturally. You can grab the app on the Android Market right now and the Orb Caster software is free for PC and Mac users. [via CNET Download] ) |
| Intel Atom E series processors could get Android Gingerbread in 2012 Posted: 12 Sep 2011 02:20 AM PDT
Carrypad reports that Intel is looking to get an open source version of Gingerbread that will be offered to third parties looking to use the E series chips inside a tablet or other device. The custom Gingerbread OS would allow companies to build tablets using the Atom processors that run on a version of Android specifically for the chips and optimized for battery life. With the popularity of Android that would certainly be a good thing for Intel, if it can pull the custom version off. You can watch the video below to see Intel talk about the possibility of getting Android. Carrypad says that the chat about Android on Atom processors is about half way through the video. | AT&T 4G Acer Iconia Tab A501 gets priced & dated Posted: 12 Sep 2011 01:25 AM PDT AT&T‘s 4G-enabled version of the 10.1-inch Acer Iconia Tab, the A501, will go on sale September 18 the carrier has confirmed, though don’t expect crazy fast data speeds. In fact, the 4G only refers to HSPA+, not the LTE on the roadmap for later this year. Priced at $330 with a new, two-year data agreement, or $480 without, the 16GB Iconia Tab A501 is, 4G connectivity aside, identical to the A500 we reviewed previously
On the back there’s a 5-megapixel camera, while a 2-megapixel camera is up front for video calls. As well as the HSPA+ there’s WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth, along with USB 2.0, HDMI and a microSDHC memory card slot. NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor keeps things running. Acer says it will also be offering a 32GB version of the A501, though so far AT&T is yet to confirm it will be ranging the slate. OS is Android Honeycomb, and there’s access to the Tegra Zone of games and other downloads. Device Info

| PSA: There is no 3D Facebook Phone Posted: 11 Sep 2011 03:56 PM PDT Even though an HTC Status 3D would be the talk of the town, certainly, if it were real, and certainly not only for positive reasons, we’ve got to let you know that the September Best Buy BUYER’S GUIDE has a slightly less than factual bit to it. On the back cover of our beloved Best Buy mobile-intensive mini magazine, (the one you can get when you walk in the door, right over by all the smartphones,) there are three devices, (four, technically,) sitting one next to another: the “ThunderBolt by HTC”, the “HTC EVO 3D” and the “HTC Status 3D” with new choice of either AT&T standard silver coloring or Best Buy’s exclusive Mauve coloring. I asked, they giggled.
Also technically it was less of a giggle and more of an uh-ohhh on behalf of the Best Buy Mobile Department attendant’s friend whom he says is one of or perhaps the only person in charge of proofreading the monthly guide. We’d just been speaking about 3D devices and how they certainly had a chance at catching on, but with a display as small as the HTC Status (called the HTC ChaCha internationally), there was just no chance that the current glasses-free mobile versions of 3D would be able to look at all good.
So rest easy, ladies and gentlemen, it’s only a typographical error. There will be no 3D Facebook phone any time soon, even though this paper would have you believe that such a thing exists. Additionally, should you be considering purchasing the Mauve color (or the original color, for that matter) you can check our our official full-length review complete with hands-on video. I’m sure you’ll see exactly what you do and do not want to see in a device without a question. ) |

Orb Live has landed on the Android platform and the app promises some nice features. One of the coolest is that you can stream free Hulu content to your Android device along with other stuff like premium video and more. I wonder how long that free Hulu content access will last before Hulu finds a way to kill it off. If Orb Live can keep that free Hulu streaming access going it will be a good thing.
The world has gone Android crazy over the last few years with the operating system and the smartphones and tablets that run it being very popular with users around the world. Intel is far behind in the mobile game mostly thanks to the fact that its mobile chips are not as power efficient as others on the market and the expense. Intel is reportedly looking to bring a custom version of Android to the Atom E series of processors next year.
