| Verizon 4G LTE keeps getting stronger, 21 new markets coming in October Posted: 20 Sep 2011 11:21 AM PDT We’ve said AT&T has their work cut out for them regarding 4G LTE a few times and this is just one more confirmation that it’s true. Verizon is showing zero signs of slowing down their impressive roll-out of 4G LTE. They have been steadily adding 15-25 new markets every month or so since their LTE networks first launched and they seem to be continuing the extremely fast pace of integration.
Just last week they flipped the switch on 26 new markets as well as expanded the reach and capabilities in multiple cities that already had LTE. Now today they’ve announced they are getting ready to start another big push and will flip the same BIG RED switch enabling 4G LTE in another 21 network locations late October. At this rate I see them hitting and passing that 175 markets by the end of 2011 with ease.
Verizon wasn’t extremely clear on this next release but we should receive a full press release shortly with all the details. We can expect these 21 cities to have LTE come October 20th but there is a good possibility you’ll start seeing it a few days early so be sure to give it a try with any Verizon LTE enabled device. Along with those new markets they’ll also be expanding in many others like they’ve done in the recent past and we’ll update when we know more. AT&T just launched their 4G LTE two days ago and sadly they only included a very unimpressive 5 markets in the launch. They did however mention plans to fire up 4G LTE in 10-15 additional markets before years end. If that is all they plan on pushing I have a feeling Verizon is sitting pretty and smiling behind closed doors right about now. With Verizon 4G LTE in around 140+ cities to date and more coming very soon things are looking quite bright for Big Red regarding this next-gen LTE stuff. We will update when the list of cities becomes available. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Google+ Opens to the public, Hangouts and mobile app get huge updates Posted: 20 Sep 2011 10:28 AM PDT Time to start hitting that +1 button and throwing people into your circles over on Google+. Today Google just announced a HUGE update that their new social network Google+ is finally available to all and open to the public. No longer will users need an invite to join in on the fun I’ve been experiencing for months. Facebook should be worried right about now because I don’t think I’ve signed in for about 2 months thanks to Google+.
Along with finally being open to the public so I can convince all my friends to join in on the circles, Google has also added a few highly requested features to the mobile app. The biggest one being the Hangouts. Being able to do a live video chat with a webcam and as many people as you can imagine is now possible right on your Android smartphone. The +mention feature when writing a post or commenting on something has also been updates once again to allow users to mention anyone in any circle, not just people saved in the mobile app like before. The mention feature was lacking on mobile and I was constantly needing my PC to add everyone I wanted to a comment but those times are gone with the latest updates. Hangouts on Air
Google's changed the name of "Huddles" to "Messenger" and added image sharing within the actual chat system, something we’ve been waiting for here at Android Community since the launch of Huddles. The app for Android has also added more notification options, and the choice to move the G+ app to your SD card for older phones. I’m hoping this latest update will finally improve the push notifications because they still seem hit or miss for me. Google has also added screensharing (like GoToMeeting), sketchpad support, and Google Docs integration all into the world of Google+. For full details and all the information you’ll need head on down to the source link below. Oh and don’t forget to update the Android app in the market by clicking here. [via Google Mobile Blog] ) |
| Motorola Atrix 2 leaks again, more details and pictures revealed Posted: 20 Sep 2011 09:59 AM PDT Internally known as the Motorola Edison we now have even more pictures today of the upcoming Motorola Atrix 2. The next version of the Atrix was first leaked way back in July and was being called the Atrix HD so we are still up in the air regarding the actual name. With a few design changes and a new placement for the AT&T logo this looks to possibly be the final version we should see hit the shelves soon. More details and pictures after the break.
There was also a few rumors that the next Atrix could be a 4G LTE device and now that AT&T has finally started the rollout of that network it would make sense. According to sources this is not the case, and the Atrix 2 will not feature AT&T’s new 4G LTE. That could end up being a big con when this has to compete with the likes of the Bionic and the Photon 4G from other carriers. I can clearly see a “4″ in the notification bar so it could be a HSPA+ 4G phone. Just like initial leaks suggested the Atrix 2 features a 4.3″ HD display although we aren’t sure on the 720p resolution or not. A 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP camera on the rear like shown in the photos and more.
We have Android 2.3.5 on board like the image above suggests, along with the latest version of Motorola’s user interface like we saw on the DROID Bionic, and even though the sources say this isn’t a 4G phone if you look close you can make out a “4″ in the notification bar for the network status indicator. I’m going to take this leakster with a grain of salt for now because I just can’t see AT&T release this without the new 4G LTE they’ve just rolled out this week. Either way check out the rest of the photos in the gallery below and let us know what you think about the Atrix 2. [via BGR] ) |
| NVIDIA shares details on Kal-El, adds a fifth core Posted: 20 Sep 2011 09:40 AM PDT The next revolution in the mobile market it almost here, and that is quad-core processors. We’ve heard tons about them in the past and are about to here plenty more in the future. Today NVIDIA is shedding some light into their world of quad-cores, project Kal-El, and even broke some news about a fifth core — yes we said fifth as in five. Would we call that a quin-core processor?
NVIDIA today has added some details giving us a more in depth look at Kal-El quad-cores as well as everything else you’d possibly need to know with a pile of white papers full of useful information. The addition of a fifth stealth-core to help save on energy, and the amazing levels of power efficiency we will be seeing with their quad-core processors that are coming soon. It also looks like 1080p is a thing of the past, with Kal-El and future chips offering 2560×1600 HD video and more. With that high of resolution support I’m excited to see what Kal-El will offer in terms of 3D video output, as I’m sure a few will be excited to give that a try with some 3D gaming or video playback. Today NVIDIA unveiled that project Kal-el will have something called a stealth-core that is a fifth processing core that will save on energy, keeps things efficient, and pop up to do some tasks only when its needed and let the big guns sleep until their numbers are called. Everything is right here in the NVIDIA white papers. Basically during those daily tasks that are lightweight such as music playback, e-reading, and YouTube watching Kal-el will completely power down all four cores and activate the single companion stealth-core. For higher performance tasks, Kal-El disables its companion core and turns on its four performance cores, one at a time, as the work load increase. Instead of sucking power with all four cores all the time NVIDIA plans to operate in a highly efficient system. The second whitepaper by NVIDIA details how as crazy as it sounds, quad-core Kal-El uses less power than dual-core processors across all performance points, and even less than single-core processors too. Instead of overloading any single or dual chips Kal-el is able to efficiently and evenly distribute the brute workload and this causes an overall environment that consumes less power. With faster browser rendering and load times, stellar benchmark performance and multi-threading and more the power of Kal-el aims to impress. Below is a view of Coremark comparing many current dual-core processors and it shows Kal-el performing quite impressively. Delivering over two times the performance of dual-core processors all while using less power is a pretty big task, and NVIDIA seems to have nailed it.
What all this means in the Android tablet and smartphone world remains to be seen. The last leaked roadmap from NVIDIA showed us Kal-El and Kal-El+. I’m wondering if the + will be an even more efficient platform that they’ll use for quad-core smartphones. For any and all details regarding NVIDIA feel free to hit the portal button up top or just click here. I’ll ask you guys the same thing NVIDIA asked us. So, does a quad-core processor that outperforms other processors while using less power appeal to you? [via NVIDIA Blog] ) |
| O2 UK to get HTC Rhyme on October 17 Posted: 20 Sep 2011 08:38 AM PDT I just mentioned the new smartphone that has launched from HTC called the HTC Rhyme. The smartphone is aimed at women wanting a cute smartphone more than the hardcore Android user looking for power. The Rhyme does come with some nice accessories though. If the Rhyme tickled your fancy and you are in the UK, O2 has announced that it will be getting the smartphone starting on October 17. That launch date isn’t too far away.
O2 will be the exclusive UK carrier for the smartphone packing HTC Sense and Gingerbread. We already ran down the features of the Rhyme today, but if you missed that other post, I will run them down here again. The O2 version will be purple and have the same accessories as the Verizon US version. The accessories include the light-up charm that shows at a glance if there are messages or calls. The phone also comes with a dock, workout armband for holding the phone, headphones, and a Bluetooth headset. Surprisingly, the armband isn’t purple nor is the dock as you might think all the accessories would be. The phone also has Bluetooth, a 3.7-inch WVGA screen, a 5MP rear camera with flash and a VGA front camera. The phone is expected to be free on a contract. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Verizon HTC Rhyme Hands-On [Video] Posted: 20 Sep 2011 08:31 AM PDT What we’ve got here is a rather feminine device created by HTC to appeal to those who love to be fashion forward and have a bit of a unique coolness to their smartphone. Much in the same way the bright red version of the HTC Inspire 4G, the HTC Rhyme (here in its Verizon iteration) aims to spice up more than just the specifications inside the phone – the exterior aesthetic here is enhanced, made to work with the way the user and the device interact visually. And it finally, finally brings the “charm” to the USA with a little light-up square that lets you know you’ve got a notification. Japan Kawaii, here we come!
I’m actually surprised the team at HTC didn’t call this the HTC Kawaii, as cuteness is certainly the centerpiece here with the Rhyme. It’s also a bit strange that it doesn’t have “Beats” integration given its name and the fact that HTC recently hooked up with Beats officially, but we wont dwell on that for long. Plastic and metal components all around, soft plastic on the back and a construction that reminds us, strangely, of a first-gen HTC device – and that’s not a bad thing.
This device is clearly made to be a full package, with wired stereo headset, Bluetooth headset, and charm all ringing true with the same cool Plum coloring. The charm, like the headset, must be plugged into the headphone jack to work, acting as a simple tell-all for activities as they happen – got a new message? Bright lights for you! The desk cradle is one of the more clear plusses of this entire combination, appearing to be a desktop accessory noone would be opposed to employing.
Inside and out this device doesn’t exactly scream “new”, a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon, WVGA LCD display and 5MP camera with single LED flash leading us to believe that this device isn’t aimed at early adopters, but rather a new generation of smartphone users looking to get in to the game with something that looks rather nice. On the other hand, this device is the first to show off the new HTC Sense 3.5, glossy and impressive as always. The simplified widgets and tabbed shortcut bar are there, (like you’ve seen in the leaked version perhaps), as are some excellent dynamic icons that chance based on updates to apps.
The newest update to HTC’s camera app includes 2.5s in burst mode, auto backlight correction, and automatic upload to a user-designated Facebook gallery, amongst many other options you may have seen in the last few impressive HTC camera app releases. That said, in combination with a fairly decent (though not top-class compared to its 8-megapixel cousins) camera makes this device a definite lead-in to other HTC devices. You’ll also notice that this device doesn’t ONLY come in Plum, there’s a sort of silver/white combo for those that love a White Wedding more than they want Purple Rain. [VIDEO PROCESSING] What we’ve got here is a mid-range contender that’ll likely appeal to a younger crowd and will take, as all good smartphones should, the feature phone selection at Verizon to lunch (and not leave a tip!) Have a look at our hands-on video as well as photos galore above and below. We’ll also be reviewing this device soon. ) |
| HTC Rhyme gets official on Verizon, puts us to sleep Posted: 20 Sep 2011 07:10 AM PDT HTC has unveiled a new Android smartphone today and to be honest, it’s a snoozer. The phone is called the HTC Rhyme and it will be heading to Verizon on September 29. The smartphone has a purple color and appears to be targeting the ladies out there based on the color-matched accessories. The color is actually called metallic plum, but I know sparkly purple when I see it. Prince would be all up on this smartphone.
It has a charm thingy that glows when a call comes in and to give a visual indication of a call if the phone is on mute. Other accessories that come with the smartphone include a sports armband to secure the phone for workouts and a Bluetooth headset that is the same color as the phone. On the hardware, side things are basic. You get a WVGA display, support for HSDPA networks, WiFi, and Bluetooth capability. The phone also has GPS inside and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Over the top of the Android OS is HTC Sense 3.5 and HTC Watch streaming video support. It has a front and rear camera as well. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Dell offers Android users app for shopping and support Posted: 20 Sep 2011 05:58 AM PDT Dell has announced a new app for Android users that will let Android fans access a bunch of features for support and to buy new products. The app is an extension of the Dell.com website and it is called the Dell Mobile App for Android. The app is on the Android Market right now for download. You can also download it directly from the Dell website at this link.
Using the app Android owners can shop from anywhere and at anytime and offers many of the features from the main site. With the app users can browse products and compare different products from Dell as well as read reviews. Once the product is chose the user can buy what they are looking at securely directly from the mobile device. All the same products and options are available on the app as the main Dell website. This might be a cool app for the corporate IT person that has to order products for multiple people within the company. Dell is also pushing the app to be a shopping hub for the holiday season. Dell and Baidu have been in the news lately. Dell and Baidu recently joined up to build an Android-based OS for mobile devices in China. ) |
| TouchPad Android port continues: H/W acceleration, more [Video] Posted: 20 Sep 2011 03:00 AM PDT Work on the HP TouchPad Android port continues, with the Cyanogenmod team releasing a new video demonstrating its latest milestone. Both of the TouchPad’s 1.5GHz cores can now be used, all of the sound issues have been addressed, and there’s some impressive 3D gaming to be had, too.
Hardware accelerated video is also now functional, which means smooth playback of 720p HD video locally stored on the tablet itself, as well as high-quality YouTube playback. Obviously there’s WiFi support, along with the accelerometer, audio system and more. The intention is still to provide a dual-boot system, capable of loading either Android or the original webOS of the TouchPad. Unfortunately there’s no public ROM for owners to try out themselves; that’ll be ready when it’s ready, the Cyanogenmod team insists. |
| Posted: 19 Sep 2011 08:49 PM PDT Formerly codenamed the LG LU6200, the LG Optimus LTE finally has some sneakshots. This will be the first dual-core LG device to hit the LTE airwaves – the carrier is still a mystery. Previous LG devices can’t compare to the specs of this new superphone; with the 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon processor lag/hangups should be a thing of the past.
Similar to the US Galaxy S II, the battery has been amped up to 1830mAh to help your device last the entire day. The Optimus LTE will sport the world’s first AH-IPS LCD display at 4.5″ with a 1280×720 resolution. There hasn’t been enough solid competition against Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus displays to date, but the AH-IPS LCD is sure to be a contender.
Most unique to the Optimus LTE is the exterior-rear casing. It looks to be a diamond-backed pattern that’s smooth to the touch. Whether or not this will be the same to ship out to the US is still unclear. As for software goes, Street Fighter IV will be available exclusively for the Optimus LTE for 3 months. | Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE Update rolling out now Posted: 19 Sep 2011 08:10 PM PDT Verizon Wireless announced early last week that they were getting ready to push an OTA update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Verizon 4G LTE. I’m happy to report that users should be seeing this update hitting their Galaxy Tab devices starting today. A few users have already reported the update hitting their tab and we’ve got some screenshots and details after the break.
Sadly this update is only 11.4 MB in size and mainly looks to fix a few bugs as well as some issues with Verizon Wireless connectivity. When Verizon released the update information shown below early last week they were clear in pointing out this is mainly for 3G/4G connection issues and a few other minor bugs. For all the details here is the official update document from Verizon.
Along with data connectivity fixes, email and browser enhancements, Verizon also has made the Tab 10.1 LTE able to be detected on the Mac OS such as Lion and OSX. They’ve also now added SIM and IMEI information to the “about tablet” screen although both of those are very minor issues. For those hoping for an update to the Touch Wiz UX for tablets or even Android 3.2 Honeycomb you’ll sadly have to wait for that another day. The update is extremely small, quick and shouldn’t take but a few minutes. As always this should come OTA but users can also go to settings> about tablet> check for updates if they’d like to manually pull the OTA update themselves and not wait. Give the update a try and let us know if you experience “enhanced data connectivity” after the update. Device Info

| Gameloft offers Back to School game deals Posted: 19 Sep 2011 03:57 PM PDT For those of you who somehow have NOT tried three of the most awesome games on Android, hands-down, this is your lucky day. Gameloft is having a back-to-school sale on a few of their most awesomely popular games, starting with Backstab HD, a game which allows you, a pirate-sort of person, to go about murdering your way to glory from the start of the game to the finish – this game, as with the other two in this post, has been compared many multiples of times to console or PC-level quality games, and with good reason. It’s friggin in the riggin sweet, and you’ll be able to get it now for a limited time for $0.99 USD.
Next in line is N.O.V.A. 2 HD, a game you’ll find a demo of inside your brand new Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. Again lucky you if you didn’t pull the trigger until now, because this ultra-detailed shooter, capable of making you think you might never come back from gaming on an Android platform, is also only $0.99 for a limited time. Blue guns, blue guns everywhere!
Then there’s the greatest car racing game ever to grace the world of mobile – Asphalt 6: Adrenaline. This racing game allows you to collect cash to upgrade your vehicle, purchase new vehicles, and even trick out the paint job on anything you drive as you crash and burn your way to the top of the race track. Racing modes include traditional, head to head, and even destruction derby style, where while the race may seem innocent enough, your goal is to destroy as many of your opponents ad you can by running them off the road, into the rails, and into one another. Kill em all! This game will also cost you, you guessed it, $0.99 for a limited time.
You can grab each of these games on the Android Market right this second by hitting up the Gameloft developer collection. Better yet lets just link to them since Gameloft has about a billion games out there now: Again, each is less than a buck for a limited time.

| HTC Explorer press shot revealed, HTC Sense 3.5 and more Posted: 19 Sep 2011 03:15 PM PDT HTC seems to have no plans on slowing down when it comes to hitting every aspect of the Android market. With top tier phones like the Sensation 4G, and low end phones like the pictured HTC Explorer. What we have here is the official press shot of the HTC Explorer, known previously and leaked as the HTC Pico. Along with a slight design change and some Sense UI 3.5 the Explorer aims to be a decent entry level smartphone.
Like we mentioned above this was first leaked as the HTC Pico, but now it will be known as the HTC Explorer. It features some pretty low to mid-range specs that line up nicely with an entry level phone such as the HTC Wildfire S. With similar specs and size it should be a nice little budget phone. With a rumored Qualcomm 600 Mhz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and Sense UI 3.5 is clearly shown in the image above looking slightly different than what we’ve seen thus far in phones like the HTC Bliss. Along with the entry level 600 MHz CPU we have a 5MP camera on the rear and a 3.2″ HVGA display. Most likely this will replace the current line of entry level phones but we wont know until we hear more. We could see this announced tomorrow at the HTC Event in NYC. We will be there live capturing all the details so don’t go too far. HTC may announce the HTC Runnymede or even the HTC DROID Incredible HD and either way we can’t wait to see what HTC has to say come tomorrow. We should see the HTC Explorer sometime this fall so stay tuned. [via PocketNow] ) |
| Google Wallet launches officially on Nexus S 4G Posted: 19 Sep 2011 02:12 PM PDT It’s the 4G version of the Nexus S that’ll receive the update to Google Wallet first, Google tells us, this brand new NFC-based electronic payments system working with Visa, American Express, and Discover right out of the gate. This system will allow you, as you may already know, to tap your device to an in-store payment device and instantly pay your bill with your “Wallet”. Your update to full alpha Google Wallet functionality will occur in an over-the-air manner, meaning that if you’ve got a Samsung Nexus S 4G, you’ll be seeing a notification right away immediately if not soon.
With this announcement, Google reminds us all that they pledged a commitment to an open commerce ecosystem and that they thank very much the folks at MasterCard and Citi bank for being their launch partners. To encourage those who wish to use the system first, Google is offering a $10 free bonus to their Google Prepaid Card if users decide to set up their Google Wallet before the end of 2011. That could buy you a whole lunch, goodness! EDIT: apparently MasterCard works out of the gate, while Google notes that “today, Visa, Discover and American Express have made available their NFC specifications that could enable their cards to be added to future versions of Google Wallet.” You’ll notice that George Costanza was the very first person to use Google Wallet a little bit earlier this past week: Google states that it is their goal to allow you to add ALL of your payment cards, whatever they may be, to your Google Wallet so you can get rid of the bulk in your traditional pocketbook. You’ll notice in both New York City and San Francisco that payment consoles are beginning to crop up as early as this morning. Neato! As Samsung notes, you can check on your update status in the following way:

| Google preparing developers for Ice Cream Sandwich with some useful tips Posted: 19 Sep 2011 02:00 PM PDT Google’s Android Ice Cream Sandwich is coming and the release is getting so close I can almost taste the Vanilla. Today the Android Developers Team posted some useful details and tips for developers to help them with the transition to Ice Cream Sandwich. Although the SDK isn’t available for developers yet, Google plans to have them more than ready when the time comes.
Today on the developer blog they go through some useful tips and information regarding mainly Android 3.x Honeycomb and how developers can make them compatible with both smaller and larger screen devices for when ICS comes to market. They’ve also included details on how to exclude their apps only to Honeycomb should the app developer choose to do so. Android ICS will merge the two OS version together and developers need to start preparing now because it will be here before you know it — latest leaks suggest November 3rd.
Here are a few quotes from the blog post I found interesting and important:
and
This is a good sign that is for sure. Hopefully Google will start to announce more details as things get closer to a launch date. It appears that ICS will be taking over, as if we didn’t know that already but either way this is really exciting. I can’t wait for some Android 2.4 or 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. | Android Ice Cream Sandwich Unofficial Launcher and Screenshots [Download] Posted: 19 Sep 2011 12:59 PM PDT Before we get started what we have here are screenshots of Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, or at least the launcher running on a phone. This is an unofficial launcher of Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich made by a few awesome developers over at XDA and we have some pictures for you and a video.
We are still looking for any details as to what all this contains but from what we are hearing and seeing this is a 3rd party launcher made from previous leaked screenshots, as well as rumors of what Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich will contain. What these smart developers have done is copied the images from the leaked ICS screenshots and added some settings and options based on a few rumors and developed a pretty awesome and real looking home replacement launcher for Android based on ICS. I’ve quickly installed this to my phone and so far it looks awesome, this is only currently an alpha build and they have some work to do, but so far I love it. Screen animations while scrolling needs some improvement but other than that this is quite impressive. Hitting the multi-tasking button doesn’t bring up actual previously launched apps like Honeycomb, rather a populated list. That and the settings button doesn’t work. ICS 2.4 Launcher alpha hands-on For more details and pictures regarding this awesome launcher head to XDA forums and join in on the discussion. — Thanks @htcclay Ice Cream Sandwich 2.4 Launcher – Download [via XDA Forums] ) |
