Motorola Atrix 2 Press Shots and Lapdock leaked

Posted: 24 Sep 2011 12:08 PM PDT

We’ve seen plenty of the Motorola Atrix 2 this week especially the hands-on yesterday, but today even more details as well as the full press images have leaked to the interwebs. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Atrix 2, but we now know that will be the official name — not the Atrix HD.

The successor to the original Atrix was also spotted way back in August and was being rumored to have both an HD 720p display, and AT&T 4G LTE but these newest leaks and details have confirmed the specs. Headed soon to AT&T all of the signs are pointing to no 4G LTE. It will use 4G HSPA+ but not the new 4G LTE network that was just rolled out. This is a big mistake if you ask me, but we’ll see as the launch gets closer. Codenamed the “Edison” the specs are officially confirmed as a 4.3″ qHD 960 x 540 resolution Display, dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (2GB micro-SD included). Featuring an 8MP camera on the rear (no hump like the Bionic) 2MP front facing video chat camera. Powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and the same Moto Blur UI we’ve seen plenty of lately.

Also leaked was some pictures of the Atrix 2′s new Motorola Lapdock. From the initial picture it seems to be huge but we could be wrong. Looking much fatter than the Bionic Lapdock seen here. No specific details or specs were given at this time but it’s said to be 10.1″ which is smaller than the previous version, so it should be lighter and a bit more portable. There also seems to be a cable attaching to the phone for the connection rather than docking the smartphone, hopefully Motorola will streamline the design and the same dock will work with all phones in the future unlike the previous models.

This is just hitting the wires so we’ll continue to look for more information regarding both the Atrix 2 and the Lapdock.

Motorola Spyder revealed with Super AMOLED qHD screen, dual-core, and LTE

Posted: 24 Sep 2011 09:24 AM PDT

How about a new powerhouse Android smartphone to start our weekend? What has just been revealed is apparently codenamed the Motorola Spyder but sources are calling this the DROID RAZR. I’m not sure if I’m more excited to see the name RAZR be revived, or the fact it has a qHD 960 x 540 Super AMOLED display. More details and images after the break.

According to the leaks received by Thisismynext this powerhouse smartphone basically has it all, and then some. Featuring a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor (unknown at this point), 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash and then what they are calling an HD front facing camera too. Initial leaks are pegging this to be quite similar to the DROID Bionic and I’d have to agree.

Now for the exciting part. They mention this Motorola Spyder will come with a Super AMOLED qHD display. Taking both the high resolution 960 x 540 from the qHD line and blending it with the amazing and vivid colors and contrast from an AMOLED display. I don’t know about you guys but that just sounds awesome. Some may remember the DROID HD that was leaked back in August and it appears to be the same smartphone.

I like the fact they may revive the once iconic and hugely popular RAZR brand as it had a great run back in the days. Looking over the leaked images below it appears to be very similar to both the Bionic and the Droid X — having a similar small volume rocker, and maybe even the slight curve around back as we’ve seen so many times. We can expect a wide array of docks, web tops, and accessories just like previously launched Motorola smartphones with the DROID RAZR too. Take note the micro-USB and micro-HDMI appear to have a cover or door to conceal them if the photo renders below are what we’ll see come launch.

Interesting leak for this early Saturday that is for sure. We should hear and see more and hopefully this amazing looking phone doesn’t get delayed too many times like our friend the Bionic.

HTC Vigor to have Beats audio and LTE onboard

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 09:53 PM PDT

Shortly following the recent leaks of various software aspects of the HTC Vigor, those who did some digging in the files leaked have found some interesting pieces of information that bring some device information to light. Though the leak seemed to be of relatively insignificant wallpapers and screenshots, new information was gleaned from the files, and the lack of some elements bring questions to the table.

As already anticipated, the wallpaper images released are sized at a resolution of 1440×1280 which definitely exceeds the minimum 1280×720 resolution necessary for a 720p HD display. So long as the device avoids an IPS display, we expect the resolution to look beautiful on the 4.2" screen. Another piece of information gleaned from the leaks reveal that the device will feature onboard Beats Audio, as initially rumored.

What wasn't seen on the device however was the typical DROID eye seen in the boot animation files. The DROID eye is used by Verizon as a designation of the device to their DROID line. Perhaps the HTC Vigor might remain named the HTC Vigor? Or maybe Verizon simply hadn't added the images to the animation prior to the media leak.

Let the leaks keep coming.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G and Infuse 4G Gingerbread Leak Available

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 09:52 PM PDT

For those lucky among you who own a Galaxy S 4G or an Infuse 4G, a Gingerbread, 2.3.5 ROM has been released for your downloading pleasure. While this isn’t necessarily an official update by any means, it does suggest that an official update may come in the near future. But for those of you with one of these rooted beauties, the wait is no longer over.

Of course, for those of you who don’t have rooted devices, this may not be the update you were looking for. The instructions for installing the leaked ROM files are quite simple however, assuming that you already have Odin installed on your computer. And as per usual, Mac users have been left in the dark as Odin is solely windows-only.

You can find both ROM files over at Samfiremare. From there, the instructions are relatively simple. Simply extract the .tar files with the password samfirmware.com and click “PDA” from within Odin and select the new md5 that you extracted. Then, from there, it’s as simple as plugging in your device in download mode by holding both volume buttons with the device off, and plugging it into your computer. Odin should be able to handle everything else from there.

And for those of you who don’t have the fortune to own these particular phones yourself, be sure to check out our review of the the Galaxy S 4G and the review of the Samsung Infuse 4G.

HTC Vigor leaks… in pieces

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 07:52 PM PDT

The rumored HTC Vigor, named to be successor to the Droid Incredible 2, has leaked its boot animation sequence, defaulted wallpapers, including its live wallpaper, in addition to the notifications and default ringtones on the device. The boot sequence also confirms some expected features of the phone.

As reported previously, reports have placed the Vigor potentially releasing by October 13th. Specifications for the phone include a dual-core 1.5 GHZ processor, a 4.3″ HD screen (720p), and Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. The device has also been cleared through the FCC as an LTE device, bringing another 4G option for Verizon.

While the leak only provides image files the live wallpaper can be installed to your device if you so desire. Earlier we had announced leaked live images of the device, and they can be found here. It’s good to see that Verizon is providing other alternatives to the Droid Bionic for those seeking an LTE device.

Motorola XOOM 2 Revealed in leaked photos

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 07:45 PM PDT

It appears that the XOOM will truly have a followup in the future, the very near future it seems if these photos are to be taken as images of a real live test unit of the upcoming tablet from Motorola. This device is said by our source here to be tagged with the product number MZ617 and indeed called XOOM 2 (at least for the time being, that is.) The source of the photo also mentions that there’s an HDMI and microUSB port (or two ports, one single port would mean MHL), some “big” physical flush buttons on the back, a SIM card slot, and “no SD slot at first glance.” Sound alright so far?

Other than what’s written in the paragraph above, there’s no real solid information on this device other than the gigantic leak from a few months ago which also saw names like Slimline, Targa, Zaha, and Tracy XL as additional product names. There are some obvious points that we can glean from just looking at the device, this starting with the fact that this tablet has a couple of speaker grilles up near the top of the back of the device. In the center of the top of the back of the device is an “HD” camera with the protective plastic still stuck on it (that’s why it’s bluish. You can see that this is obviously not a full production-ready unit by the message right up back and center which reads:

CONFIDENTIAL MOTOROLA RESTRICTED PROPERTY NOT FOR SALE

AKA don’t you DARE take a couple of photos of this device and post them on the internet, you fool! We can also see some very indicative design cues, starting with the curves. Recent Motorola products such as the Motorola ELECTRIFY which we just reviewed today, mind you, have the same sort of curve at the edges going on. A sort of quick waning near the corners. The Motorola M is right in the center of the back, and the coloring on the metal appears to be very similar to what we’ve seen with the Motorola XOOM Wi-fi variant (aka the Silver Euro Edition.) There’s a lovely black sort of border around the back, and right at the bottom you can see the cover slightly ajar for the SIM card – and if this version is anything like the original XOOM, there’s space for a microSD card as well.

Look like your kind of tablet? How about if it’s got a quad-core or a penta-core NVIDIA Kal-El processor inside? That’s what I’m talking about, mang.

Archos 80 G9 Hands-on and Unboxing [Video]

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 03:28 PM PDT

We’ve got products coming out of our ears this week here at Android Community, the newest of which is the Archos 80 G9, a lovely new Honeycomb tablet sitting itself up to compete with the now-saturated tablet market here in the USA. This tablet has a unique shape and size, feels just divine to hold with one or two hands, and does indeed have a built-in kickstand to allow you to do your everyday work and play with complete ease. Will this tablet drown in the sea, or will it have a fighting chance at taking a sizable bite out of the fledgeling Android tablet market?

This device and its slightly bigger brother, the ARCHOS 101 G9 tablet, both contain one of the most powerful chips on the market today. It’s the Texas Intruments OMAP4 dual-core processor running at 1GHz . At the moment we’ve not got the 3G connection these tablets are set to be running with in the future and must rely on its Wi-fi connection, so no speed tests quite yet, but we can certainly do some benchmarks, and benchmarks you shall have soon! Meanwhile you can see everything that’s going on inside and outside this tablet here in this video, courtesy of yours truly this afternoon.

First impression on this device is that it’s thin, it’s really nice to hold, and a low price point would send this tablet into the record books for best selling tablet in the history of the world – sort of. The interesting thing about this little monster is that it’s one of the only dual-core Android tablets on the market that ISN’T NVIDIA – that is, if you don’t count the HP TouchPad hacked and twisted. What this little tablet represents is a choice for all those looking to get in to the tablet game that don’t want a gigantic display but also want a dual-core processor. It fills that market slot.

In the future we’ll have 3G connectivity on this device, but for now we’ve got an empty full-sized USB slot on the back (filled with a dummy unit) as well as a slew of additional ports and slots for all sorts of plug-n-play interaction. This tablet will be reviewed by yours truly here on Android Community soon and very soon, believe it – also ask any questions you’ve got now – now’s your time!

LG Optimus EX press image and specs revealed

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 02:47 PM PDT

Well folks, just a few days ago we received our first potential look at the LG Optimus EX rocking a dual-core processor and a decent rap-sheet full of specs. Earlier this week the details were a bit scant but today we’ve found actual press images as well as a detailed breakdown the specs and what will be under the hood here with the EX.

Coming in at under 10 mm thick this should be a very sleek and thin smartphone from LG. Rocking Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and what has now been confirmed as a 1.2 Ghz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage and more. It will feature a 4.0″ 480×800 NOVA display (no H-IPS or HD here), a 5MP camera around the rear yet sadly it wont have an LED flash. We also see a front facing camera and it will come with a 1500 mAh battery under the back cover.

Apart from the usual other treats like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and sensors it will also be capable of 1080p video capture and more. The original look didn’t reveal much other than the unique design approach LG has taken with this smartphone and the image above shows it clear as day. A bit odd if I don’t say so myself, but nice nonetheless. According to sources this is also headed for now only to Korea and will be offered in two colors — Black and Silver, as well as White and Gold. Hopefully this along with a few other LG phones seen as of late will get a US release date too.

RadioShack soon selling Barnes and Noble Nook and Nook Color

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 01:42 PM PDT

Just when you thought you couldn’t get a Nook at RadioShack, they come up and surprise you by carrying the Nook. They’ve also got the Nook Color, both of these device available very soon in most if not all of their thousands of locations across the USA and Mexico. What you need to know is that while Barnes & Noble continues to grow their eReader business, their competitors are either dying (Borders, just this past weekend, rest in peace), or re-ramping up so as to avoid the massive Nook pain. Do you own a Nook yet? Do you plan on picking one up in the near future?

What we know is that soon RadioShack will be expanding their collection of mobile devices with their first real big eReader in both the Nook and the Nook Color. While RadioShack certainly has had a wide and strange variety of electronics in the past, and a mobile business now that’s expanding day by day, this is the first time they’ve really, truly hooked up with a book store chain. Does this mean that RadioShack customers will be reading more? Who can say!

What we do know is that both the Nook and the Nook Color have been reviewed by SlashGear, the latter being done in a week-long look that should very well blow your mind:
A Week with NOOKcolor: Hardware
A Week with NOOKcolor: Reading (aka Core Apps)
NOOKcolor Unboxing and Hands-on
NOOKcolor Demo
A Bit of Extra Clarity for Would-be Developers of NOOKcolor Apps
and of course A Week with NOOKcolor: 3rd Party Apps and Final Wrap-Up

The original Nook can be seen by heading to a time machine back to 2009 and seeing the Nook review on SlashGear as performed by Vincent Nguyen. It’s lovely, but we can’t wait for the upgrade!

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Unboxing and Hands-on [Video]

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 01:02 PM PDT

In the mail today we’ve received a lovely surprise, no less than the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II. What we’ve got for you below is a full hands-on rundown of the features you’ll be working with here on the AT&T iteration of this device specifically along with a brief review of what this device will contain in our full review. Remember that this is not the first time the Galaxy S II has been released here in the states, but it is the closest we’ve gotten to the original version yet – more on that in the deep! AT&T, are you the best carrier of this device yet?

What this AT&T version has that the Epic 4G Touch does not is a whole tiny handful of things, most of them carrier-specific apps. The most obvious point of difference you’ll notice right away though is the size of the display. While the Epic 4G Touch has an enlarged 4.5-inch display, the AT&T Galaxy S II has the same 4.32-inch display that the original (international) version of the device. Of course there are quite a few differences between the original and any of the USA versions of this device, apps and the giant joystick on the original being the most obvious.

The good thing we can rely on here is the original Samsung Exynos dual-core processor clocked in at 1.2 GHz. This is one of the most powerful dual-core processors on the market today and has beaten out several other dual-core processors in benchmark tests here on Android Community in the past. This device might be the last (of two) devices in the USA to carry this exact processor, the first one being the Epic 4G Touch. You can see in the video in this post that the device is made to fit nicely in the hand and hit the sweet spot for optimal everyday use as well as screen brightness and sharpness with its Super AMOLED Plus display.

We’re looking forward very much to taking this device through the obstacle course soon to give you a good idea what you’re looking at for the October release. My own first impression is that I’ll be using this version much more than I’ve used the Epic 4G Touch simply because the WiMAX (and the 3G, for that matter,) have been very unreliable thus far AND because this 4.32-inch display seems like, again, the sweet spot for optimal everyday use.

Check out the video and let us know what you need to know about this device so I can answer all your questions in the full review!

Huawei Honor (Glory) up for pre-order, confirms specs

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 12:50 PM PDT

We have seen the Huawei Glory before during a full hands-on back in June and it was being dubbed a inexpensive Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone. Appearing as one of the better constructed devices from Hauwei as of late many were interested to hear more. Today the phone is now up for pre-order and we have more details for you after the break.

It was last spotted being called the Honor at the end of August along with some specs to help us get an understanding for the device. Huawei has been known thus far as selling some of the lower to entry level Android smartphones but this and the recently spotted Vision shows they are starting to build some great phones.

The Huaewi Honor is a 4.0″ smartphone with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 1.4 GHz single-core Qualcomm processor, 1GB RAM, 5 MP camera on the rear with LED flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the usual internal goods. It also comes with a massive 1930 mAh battery to help last more than all day. When we first learned of this device it was being mentioned as their first well rounded Gingerbread phone and it would be an inexpensive offering coming in around $300 without signing a contract. The pre-order page spotted today shows a much higher price so we are hoping that will drop once this phone hits the streets.

This seems like a great mid-range phone especially for Huawei but I’ll be hoping for a lower price while we wait for more details.

Pantech P4100 1.5 GHz dual-core tablet headed for AT&T suggests NenaMark

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 12:21 PM PDT

We have seen NeneMark benchmark results in the past that reveal all sorts of things and this should be no different. While some may say to take this with a grain of salt NenaMark has been pretty accurate with leaks such as this so far. What we have is an Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet made by Pantech that seems to be around 7″ and possibly headed for AT&T. More choices are always welcome so lets dig into the details below.

Shown in the benchmark result above you have most of the details available for this unknown device. We haven’t heard as much as a peep from Pantech regarding any tablets thus far but seen here we have a 1024 x 720 resolution device and I’d say it’s maybe a phone with an HD screen but running Android 3.2 Honeycomb rules that out. So we have a 7″ Honeycomb tablet that seems to be rocking the same 1.5 Ghz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor found in the HTC Jetstream and the upcoming T-Mobile Galaxy S II Hercules.

Pantech recently released an LTE smartphone over on Verizon Wireless known as the Pantech Breakout so chances are this tablet could be powered by AT&T 4G LTE like the Jetstream. Shown in the leaked benchmark results as clear as day is AT&T for the carrier but that doesn’t give any indication as to whether it will have 4G LTE or not — we are just speculating as it would make total sense.

That’s it as far as details go. Hopefully we see some pictures of this 7″ Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet coming from Pantech sometime soon.

LG Optimus LTE pictured again in the wild

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 11:38 AM PDT

The LG Optimus LTE has been floating around the past few weeks and now the details are starting to pour in. Known originally as the LG LU6200 sources have confirmed they are calling it the Optimus LTE but most likely will receive a full name once it hits a few carriers. This dual-core device is a nice improvement for LG’s lineup and we cant wait to see more soon — details below.

The LG Optimus LTE aims to be their answer to the Galaxy S II from Samsung. LG has dialed up a nice phone featuring a 4.5″ H-IPS display said to be the best screen around and rocking a 1280 x 720p HD resolution. Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, a dual-core 1.5 Ghz Qualcomm processor, 8 MP HD camera on the rear with 2 MP front for video, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage rounding it off as a nice top tier contender.

The Optimus LTE appeared again just this week giving us a decent view of the smartphone. While the back seems a bit weird the photo’s today paint it in a more natural light and it doesn’t look so goofy. With what seems to be a rigid soft coated back panel for easy grip, an aluminum bezel wrapping around the phone and a nice aluminum dedicated home button on the face I’m really digging this new direction by LG.

The LG Optimus LTE is rumored to hit Korea sometime this month so any day now, and we should be hearing details about a possible US launch shortly. I’d love to see this hit the streets here on Verizon or AT&T to rival the Galaxy S II but they’ll need to hurry. Who wants one?
