Motorola PHOTON 4G update brings Google Talk video and more

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 11:26 AM PDT

New details have now confirmed the Motorola PHOTON 4G is receiving an OTA update this week that should bring a slew of bux fixes as well as improvements to the WiMAX powered smartphone. The update is pretty sizable but most of that is probably new applications that will take advantage of the recently unveiled Motorola Lapdock 100.

The update isn’t too large and shouldn’t take but a few minutes to download about the entire process should only be around 10 minutes. One very notable new feature is the update brings Google Talk with video chat to the PHOTON 4G, something that sadly was missing. Then as usual we have some enhancements and bug fixes that are listed below:

-Lapdock support
-Enhancements to image appearance when pictures are taken in panorama mode
-Forwarded messages are properly identified as being forwarded
-Improved audio quality with car speakers when connected to a car charger and audio
-Introduction of international roaming 3G UMTS hotspot functionality for a single Wi-Fi enabled

As always the update should land shortly but users can feel free to manually check for updates by going to Settings > About Phone > System Updates > Update Motorola Software and pulling it down themselves. In case you missed it check out our full Motorola PHOTON 4G Review, or if you would like to root the PHOTON 4G you can click here. Feel free to drop us a line or comment below if you notice anything special, or a problem with the latest update. Enjoy!

Samsung Stratosphere 4G LTE Slider available now at Verizon for $149

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 11:11 AM PDT

For all you wanting to jump into the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network for a low price today could be that day. The Samsung Stratosphere QWERTY keyboard slider rocking 4G LTE and a great mid-range price is available starting today, October 13th, at Verizon. It had its fair share of leaks and now can finally be yours if you fancy a full side-out keyboard.

This decent and well rounded mid-range offering will only set you back $149 with a new 2-year contract. For those not following along the Stratosphere doesn’t feature all the latest bells and whistles we have on top end smartphone at the moment, but it would have been a top contender just a few months ago. With a 4.0″ AMOLED Display and a 1.0 GHz single-core processor and Verizon 4G LTE you get a great phone at a great price. Basically this is the original Samsung Galaxy S (no II here) but with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and blazing fast LTE speeds.

For those that don’t handle commitment well or would rather not sign a new contract the Stratosphere will set you back around $400 to purchase outright. Still not bad for a 4G LTE smartphone though if you ask me. The DROID Bionic is $299 with a new 2-year contract so for those that don’t need the larger screen or dual-core power the Stratosphere is a great alternative. Head down to your nearest Verizon store or order right online and receive free shipping at the source link below.

AT&T Galaxy S II new firmware leaked

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 10:59 AM PDT

The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II has only been out a few short weeks, but we have already started seeing a few leaks appear for the smartphone. Samsung was quick to release the source code for the AT&T variant and now it seems a firmware update is in the works and has already been leaked, more details below.

The Samsung Galaxy S II on AT&T is as close to the original as possible and a great smartphone, you can see our full review here. While initially there aren’t many bugs that need immediate attention as usual there are a few minor kinks that need worked out, and Samsung is already hard at work we are happy to say. The current build shipping with the phone is UCKH7 but we now have a newer build titled UCKJ1 but we are still sifting through the details.

According to our sources over at RootzWiki the leaked firmware brings about a few improvements, but also adds an issue or two. Samsung has smoothed out the homescreen lag some were experiencing and improved it in general, they’ve also fixed a lockscreen bug. We are hearing that the new firmware causes the home button to lose haptic feedback (vibrate) though so we aren’t sure what that is about. One new feature is the Android 2.3 overscroll glow effect has now been added, neat huh?

With any sort of leak like this you can flash it but at your own risk, we hold no liability and only bring you the news. All the details and download can be found on RootzWiki thanks to designgears.

Microsoft signs more Android patent agreements, this time with Quanta

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 09:57 AM PDT

Microsoft is at it again, wasting no time signing deals covering royalties and patent agreements from everyone involved in the Android OEM business as of late. The latest to fall victim this time around is Quanta Computers. The name might not be widely known but Quanta is a huge manufacturer of electronic devices. They built the BlackBerry Playbook, the Kindle Fire, and have contracts with companies such as HP, Apple, Dell, Gateway, Lenovo, Sony and many others. Today have signed patent royalty agreements with Microsoft over any Android or Chrome products they intent to build now, and in the future.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, Microsoft has a wide array of patents regarding all sorts of mobile and computational devices, and software. All Android and Chrome based devices are susceptible to infringe on these patents and to cover their bases OEM’s have been forced into signing agreements with Microsoft. There is much more to this story but that is gist of it. This is nothing new and Microsoft has been banking around $5 USD from every HTC Android device sold, that deal alone and net them more profit than Windows Phone 7 as a whole lately. Velocity Micro, Onyko and many others have signed similar deals including another big name, Samsung.

The situation isn’t getting any better and lately we’ve seen a few tweets back and forth from Google and Microsoft employees, while we just sit back and watch it is a bit disturbing. Latest numbers report Microsoft has been making over 3 times more off Android patent royalties then their own mobile OS. Motorola is next on the list for Microsoft, and the huge deal with Samsung was recently completed, so they are about to start making even more.

After the recent news posted above regarding the Samsung and Motorola suits Google finally lashed out at Microsoft. All they got in return was a very small reply — “Waaah”, and that was just about all Microsoft had to say on the situation. The latest analyst numbers claim that Microsoft is in line to rack up a sum of around $440 Million this year alone just from these Android patent royalties, clearly a huge cash crop and that is just one reason why these agreements wont be ending any time soon. While Quanta doesn’t have a lot of devices coming to market with their own name, they are a huge OEM that builds said devices for many many companies and this will be one more agreement Micro$oft can “put in the books”.

What does everyone think? Still a crazy situation that is getting out of hand? I think so.

Apple’s win in Australia could shut down Android competition for good

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 09:49 AM PDT

Google has steadily argues that Apple’s patent fight with Samsung isn’t about intellectual property, it’s about shutting down the competition. Apple’s injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was upheld in Australia today, and if other courts see this as precedent, that very well could happen. The patents in question are so far-reaching that, in Australia at least, the ruling could prevent any other Android tablets from being sold.

The conclusion comes from FOSS Patents is that the patents are "broad enough in scope that Google and its OEM partners can't work around them without rendering their products less appealing, or even entirely unappealing, to consumers." What’s even more disturbing is the idea that courts in Germany, the United States and elsewhere could take the Australian ruling as the go-ahead for similar cases in other countries, effectively shutting down Android tablets wherever Apple chooses to fight them.

It’s not all bad news. In the Netherlands Samsung has maneuvered around Apple’s last patent when it comes to the Galaxy S II, allowing them to sell the phone freely in the territory. But the Aussie patents cover “multipoint touchscreens” and “graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics”, methods that if successfully blocked make modern tablets almost impossible. Similar patents are under dispute in the American patent case, with none other than Steve Jobs listed as the inventor. In the United States Google, Verizon and T-Mobile have supported both Samsung and HTC in their defense against Apple, but the friend of the court filings may be too little, too late.

The opinions in the FOSS piece are just that, opinions. But it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Apple intends to keep its lead in the tablet market by hammering its competitors with the court systems. After all, they’re losing the market share battle to Android in the smartphone world already – why would they let it happen again for the iPad? Time will tell if the legal technique is a success, but suffice it to say, if you’re thinking about buying a Galaxy Tab 10.1, you might want to do it sooner rather than later.

Android games coming to retail stores in time for the holidays

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 09:18 AM PDT

Soon you’ll be able to purchase a selection of Android games at your local big-box retailer, courtesy of developer conglomerate indiePub. They’ll begin selling cards with download codes redeemable for certain games, much like an iTunes or Amazon MP3 Store gift certificate. Android All-Stars cards should be available from retailers before the holiday season.

The advantage of store-bought games isn’t immediately apparent for a mobile populace used to fully digital distribution. But indiePub is exploiting a current weakness in the Android Market: there’s no way to “gift” an app or game for someone else, as the iOS App Store and game services like Steam can. The presence of a physical item, even if it’s just a plastic card, also makes for something to unwrap – it’s hard to put a URL underneath a Christmas tree.

The $10 cards will allow purchasers to download a group of apps via a redemption code. Several different collections will be available: Volume 1 has Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Sally’s Spa and others, Volume Two gets you Kona’s Crate, Guerilla Bob, Free Kicks Soccer, and Backbreaker Football, while the special Atari collection allows you to download over 100 classic 2600 games. Stores selling the cards in the United States and Canada will include Target, Toys ‘R’ Us, Sam’s Club and Rogers Mobile. Games will be downloaded directly from indiePub, bypassing the Android Market.

Official DROID 2 Global Gingerbread update is coming soon

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 08:55 AM PDT

Good news, DROID 2 Global Edition users, your long-awaited Gingerbread update is right around the corner. Verizon updated its support page today, announcing that the newest system update would bring Android 2.3 to the popular handset. The page doesn’t give an exact date, but Verizon usually doesn’t wait more than a week after an official update guide to begin rolling out the software.

The Motorola DROID 2 Global was originally set to get a taste of Gingerbread last month,  but some last-minute issues forced a retraction. According to Verizon’s documentation, the new software version will bring new features like improved power management, keyboard detection, a revised user interface, new encryption and VPN options and an improved calendar. Speaking of calendars, it’s only been 11 months since Gingerbread was available to manufacturers – and we’re expecting an official announcement for Android Ice Cream Sandwich any day now.

Other improvements highlighted by Verizon include better email syncing, more stability (i.e. fewer device crashes), improved Bluetooth power and volume management, better WiFi power management and new versions of Google Books, Accuweather, the Amazon MP3 store, Blockbuster (woo), and Flash. The software update isn’t available just yet, but keep checking the OTA update in the settings menu – you never know when the staggered rollout will begin. If you’re the warranty-voiding adventurous type, don’t forget that leaks of the update have been available for some time.

Siri alternatives for Android users

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 08:23 AM PDT

The only thing that was major about the unveiling of the iPhone 4S was the new Siri voice assistant service. All the other stuff about the iPhone 4S was just not that interesting. If you are on an Android phone and like the idea of Siri, several apps out there will give you similar features right now. Extremetech ran down the top five Android apps that are like Siri, see what you think of their choices.

The first is Vlingo Virtual Assistant, which is a free app with ads or $2 to remove the ads. It has more than a million downloads and the app is one of the best by some accounts. You can voice dial with the app, send texts, and emails as well as conduct local search. Sonalight Text by Voice is the next app and it will cost you $20 per year. It lets you text using your voice and reads them back to you too.

Google Voice Search/actions is the next on the list and it is free. You can access this by clicking the mic button on the keyboard. The fourth choice is Edwin, Speech-to-Speech. This gives you voice control for different features and you can ask it odd questions since it works with Wolfram Alpha. It is free as well. The last is Speaktoit Assistant, also free. This app is like Vlingo in functionality and has an avatar on screen you talk to.

Sony’s Tablet S and Tablet P get Japanese 3G versions on October 28th

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 08:18 AM PDT

Sony’s first entries into the Honeycomb tablet market, the creatively-named Tablet S and Tablet P, are getting mobile broadband versions in their home market. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo will start selling 3G versions of both devices on October 28th. On this side of the Pacific, the Tablet S is only available in a WiFi version, and the dual-screen tablet P is still a complete no-show.

The wireless release is ahead of schedule – Sony had previously planned to have 3G versions of the tablets available November. The Google translation is a little shaky, but it looks like new users will have a 1050 yen ($14) discount applied to their data plan for the first six months. That’s a good sign for Japanese tablet fans, but unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything about a North American release for the wireless broadband versions. Honestly, we’d be happy just to get our hands on the funky dual-screen Tablet P again.

Both of Sony’s tablets use Android Honeycomb 3.2, to their credit and Android fans’ delight. The S model features a 1280 x 720 screen, while the split screens on the P are each 1024 x 480. Both feature Tegra 2 processors and Playstation certification, a la the XPERIA Play, plus a rear 5 megapixel 720p camera. The Tablet S has a built-in infrared port for controlling televisions and set-top boxes, and both of them feature DLNA certification and access to Sony’s media stores for music, video and e-books. There is currently no word on when the Tablet P, or 3G versions of either tablet, will be released in the United States.

Lenovo increases IdeaPad A1 tablet price by $30

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 08:07 AM PDT

Here’s a puzzler: why is Lenovo’s brand-spanking new Gingerbread tablet now $30 more expensive on the company’s web store? The price of the cheapest IdeaPad A1 raised from $199 to $229, but the upgraded 16GB version will still be $249. Android Community is currently waiting for a response from Lenovo regarding the price change.

If you’re hoping to get the IdeaPad A1 at the original price, you’d better look around quickly. New tablets from the Lenovo store won’t ship until November at the earliest, and many other online retailers seem to be sold out of their stock. The A1 was only released a week ago. Without an official statement from Lenovo we’re left to speculate as to the reasons for the upgrade. It’s possible that the tablet is selling so well they don’t mind adjusting the supply-demand ratio a bit, or the original $199 price could have been meant as a special to spur interest from early adopters.

Even at $229, the IdeaPad K1 is a pretty good deal when measured against more expensive options. The 7-inch, 1024 x 600 display is roughly equal to the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the 1GHz processor should be zippy enough for most Android apps. Gingerbread is a bit of a discouragement, but it’s basically standard on tablets in the range. However, Lenovo’s adjusted pricing may come back to haunt them as the Amazon Kindle Fire release approaches. The heavily customized Gingerbread tablet lands in November for just $199, with mostly equal hardware and compelling integration with Amazon services.

Grand Theft Auto III coming to Android this fall

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 07:24 AM PDT

Ah, the simple joy of a city-spanning police chase culminating in a ramp jump over a train station, ending in a bullet-riddled fireball of fiberglass and steel. It’s a pleasure that’s been missing from the Android Market for far too long. But that will change this fall, when Rockstar ports the classic action game Grand Theft Auto III to Android phones and tablets.

Grand Theft Auto III hit the Playstation 2 ten years ago and became a smash hit almost overnight. While parents and teachers wrung their hands about the ultra-violent gameplay (at least by 2001 standards) game reviewers raved about its open-world environment and do-anything structure. GTA III basically invented the “sandbox” genre that’s become so popular over the last decade, and continues to sell millions of copies every time a new installment is released.

The Android version of Grand Theft Auto III will need some pretty powerful mobile hardware – even though the graphics are limited by today’s standards, those huge environments will test the processors and RAM of even the latest phones. The developer mentioned specific support for the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1, so you can expect that other top-of-the-line phones and tablets will also be featured. Of course, an iOS version will be forthcoming as well.

Android is seeing a positive renaissance when it comes to classic gaming. In addition to the vibrant emulation scene and new games like Minecraft, gaming staples like Duke Nukem and Leisure Suit Larry are headed onto Android phones and tablets soon. Like those games, Grand Theft Auto III will almost certainly be right at home in the “Mature” section of the Android Market.

Android app downloads might surpass iOS in 2012

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 06:37 AM PDT

Android smartphones already outsell the iPhone in the U.S. and many other markets, but one area where iOS still reigns supreme is app downloads. That may not last, though: research firm Xyologic estimates that if current trends continue, downloads from the Android market will surpass the iOS App Store in June of 2012. That’s around the same time that the number of available apps are expected to be equal.

Right now, at least 494 million iOS apps are downloaded by users every month. The same figure across most Android devices is just 279 million, but in a short eight months Android will have caught up worldwide, at least by Xyologic’s math. Certain markets already have a heavy Android dominance, including the Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal. It appears that Apple’s tablet dominance will take a lot longer to fall by the wayside – iPad app downloads make up an impressive 15% of its download space. Whatever the equivalent number is for Android’ Honeycomb-optimize apps, it’s nowhere near that.

Notably, Xyologic’s research does not include figures from China, where Android is growing by leaps and bounds despite the (suspected) best efforts of the Chinese government. It also doesn’t include third-party app downloads from the Amazon App Store and others, a factor that might increase exponentially as more and more tablets use the popular solution, to say nothing of the upcoming Amazon Kindle Fire. Keep in mind that all of these estimates are tentative and based upon usage as of August, 2011.

CyanogenMod for TouchPad update video hits

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 05:11 AM PDT

We talked a bit about the CyanogenMod a few days back when version 7.1 was said to be coming soon. Today a new video has been spied on YouTube offering a video update for the CM7 TouchPad hopefuls out there. This is the mod people are waiting for with anxiety to turn those neigh worthless TouchPads into Android tablets with a future.

In the latest video, you can see Bluetooth streaming working on the tablet with Audio and a movie from Netflix. The video also shows that CM7 on the TouchPad will support gaming apps like MineCraft. Other things you can see working in the video are the live wallpapers and Skype calling. CM7 is looking really good right now.

There is still no ETA on the final version coming to market. The version in the video is an alpha offering and the video guy says it will be ready when it is ready. The video is more than a little strange; check it out for yourself below.

Panasonic unveils BizPad Android tablets for businesses

Posted: 13 Oct 2011 04:16 AM PDT

Panasonic has announced a pair of new tablets that are aimed at the business user. The tablets are for the Japanese market and the two models differ in screen size. The BizPad JT-580VT has a 7-inch screen and the BizPad JT-581VT packs a 10.1-inch screen. The tablets both run on the Android 3.2 platform. The tablets are also similar in that they are ruggedized for longevity with rough users.

The tablets are resistant to shock, dust, and water. The 10.1-inch tablet is able to survive drops of 80cm and the 7.1-inch unit is able to survive 120cm drops. Other common features include a NFC reader, user replicable battery, Bluetooth, USB, GPS and a microSD card slot for storage. The processor for both versions of the tablet is an ARM Cortex A9 dual-core.

The other hardware features include 1GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. The screen resolution for the 7.1-inch model is 1024 x 600 and 3G is optional. It has a 5MP camera, WiFi, and will hit stores in December. The 10.1-inch tablet has a resolution of 1280 x 800 and a 1.3MP camera and WiFi and will land in January. Pricing hasn’t been announced, I would expect these tablets to be more than the competition thanks to the rugged features.

Velocity Micro unveils new Cruz T408 and T410 tablets

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 05:05 PM PDT

Velocity Micro is extending its tablet offerings with a pair of new budget-priced Gingerbread models. The Cruz T408 and Cruz T410 are 8-inches and 10-inches respectively (natch), with built-in access to the Amazon App Store and WiFi Internet access. The tablets are available now starting at $239.

Both tablets share identical internals: a 1GHz Cortex processor, 512Mb of RAM, a front-facing camera and an extremely welcome capacitive touchscreen. The screens themselves are oddly mismatched: the 8-inch T408 will have a 4:3 screen, whereas the T410 goes for a full widescreen 16:9 experience. Resolutions weren’t announced, but I’d guess 8oo x 600 and 1280 x 720, respectively. There’s a surprising amount of built-in apps, including QuickOffice, Adobe Flash and the ever-popular Angry Birds. These being Gingerbread tablets, there’s no access to the Android Market or Google apps, but the Amazon App Store should have most people covered.

Check out the official video below – watch at 42 seconds for a familiar face.

Both tablets are shipping from Velocity Micro’s web store now, and you can probably expect them at retail locations soon. The Cruz T408 will retail for just $239, while the big brother T410 will cost $299. That might be a hard sell as the Amazon Kindle Fire release draws nearer, but some might prefer a more traditional Gingerbread tablet to Amazon’s super-customized loss-leader. And who knows – if Google releases the open source code for Ice Cream Sandwich as promised, these budget tablets could become platforms for custom ICS ROMs very quickly.

Motorola Xoom 4G OTA update details

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 04:34 PM PDT

Those of you lucky enough to have received your Motorola Xoom back from the 4G LTE update, you should now have a few noticeable changes to your device. Either that or an OTA update will be hitting as soon as you power up. When the hardware update first started last month we saw reports on the OTA update, bringing the new Android Market to Honeycomb and more, and today Verizon has made it official and posted the update details and changelog information.

Users may be wondering what all was changed other than the addition of a 4G LTE radio inside the device, and now we have all the details. The Xoom 4G has been updated to Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb build version HLK75D. Although we aren’t seeing much the details (below) seem to mention the new market, market auto updates in the future for tablets, and as usual a few bug fixes. Apparently they’ve also addressed some connectivity issues so that is good. Hopefully 4G LTE will be stable, it works great on my Tab 10.1 LTE.

-Android Market has been updated.
-When toggling between Airplane Mode, you will no longer receive the following error message: "Wrong Operator: SIM card is from an unknown source."
-After performing an (OTA) update, the Android Market shortcut on the homescreen works correctly.
-Android Books app updated.
-Android Market Terms and Condition text is now easier to read against background color.
-Android Market app now updates on its own.

They’ve also mentioned a few things for the web browser and security related things, then again like I mentioned above Motorola and Verizon are focusing on 3G/4G connectivity. They’ve fixed a few bugs that should keep data stalls to a minimum and keep 4G running strong. While Xoom users sadly can’t say they had the first 4G LTE Honeycomb tablet at least they finally do have LTE on board. I’ve not experienced the updated Xoom myself but I’ve been hearing good things from friends and members in the forum. Let us know how the updates running for you, we’d love to hear.

Fake Netflix app is an account-stealing Trojan

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 04:16 PM PDT

Unfortunately, Android users need to be increasingly vigilant when it comes to non-Market apps and hacks. Nowhere is this more true than unofficial versions of the Netflix app. Security firm Symantec has documented a fake version of the video streaming app that steals users’ log in data in a nasty Trojan exploit.

Netflix recently expanded its video streaming app to all Android devices from 2.2 Froyo and above. Unfortunately, that still leaves almost 15% of Android phones and tablets out of the loop, and various custom versions of the Netflix app have been circulating to try and circumvent the limitation. There’s also the apps for formerly unsupported devices that can be found on user forums all over the Internet. With all these app versions (not to mention unsatisfied Netflix customers) floating around,  it’s no surprise that an enterprising hacker has devised a new vector for password theft.

The app is a pretty good approximation of the Netflix log in screen – you can see the differences in Symantec’s illustration above. What’s even more dangerous is the fact that many people share log ins and  passwords across multiple sites, making this sort of scam a minefield for identity theft. (You don’t do that, right?) Remember: if your phone uses Android 2.2 or higher, there’s no reason NOT to download Netflix from the Android Market. And as always, never download and install an APK from a source that you don’t fully trust.

QuickOffice 5 gets previewed at CTIA with new sharing features

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Let’s be honest: office suites on touchscreen devices are never exactly ideal, but QuickOffice is about as good as it gets. The popular document creator has racked up hundreds of thousands of purchases (an impressive feat at $15 and $20), and it’s being included on more and more devices straight from the manufacturer. The developers were on hand at CTIA to give Droid-Life the skinny on the upcoming version five.

There’s a host of improvements included in the new version, especially the tablet-optimized QuickOffice Pro HD. All versions are getting a spit and polish on the user interface, and the new Evernote sharing feature is sure to turn some heads. QuickOffice still works with existing services like Google Docs, MobileMe and Dropbox. New options for Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are also on the table.

You’ll have to wait a little while to get your hands on the new release. Version 5 will debut in the Android Market in mid-November at the current prices. Updates to iOS should come at about the same time, but there’s no word on new Symbian or WebOS versions – we know there’s a lot of HP TouchPad users reading this. Keep an eye on Android Community for a full breakdown when QuickOffice 5 lands.

PowerAMP version 2.0 Beta is ready to download

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 03:20 PM PDT

PowerAMP, the audiophile’s Android music app of choice, has gained quite a following since it debuted almost a year ago. Users love the fully customizable equalizer and folder-based library structure. Now the first beta for version 2 is out, and paid-up PowerAMP faithful and new users alike can download it here.

What’s immediately visible is an upgraded primary theme, complete with transitions, blur effects and other goodies. According to the indie developer, Honeycomb tablets will be seeing their own custom user interface in the next version release. An improved landscape mode, enhanced sound quality, better transitions between screens, and a new lock screen interface (though it apparently isn’t playing nice with my custom DROID X ROM). There’s a bevvy of new user-selectable options to try out – pure gold to the average Android and audio tweaker. Head over to the official forum to see a list of changes.

Of course this is an early beta release, so there are some rough patches too. Users are reporting album art display issues, Bluetooth playback gaps, playlist importing problems, and a lot of other small problems. If you’re a long-time PowerAMP user who’s comfortable with his or her music experience, you might want to wait for a more stable release. Then again, if you’re a long-time Power AMP user, you’re probably the kind of person who’d leap on a beta release. Head on over to the link above to download and install the non-Market APK. New users get the standard 15-day trial mode, while those who have purchased the app can enter their license key for full access.
