Google Apps users can now join Google+

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 11:18 AM PDT

One of the biggest complaints for the recently launched social network service was the fact that Google Apps users weren’t able to join. This being the large group of schools and businesses that actually pay Google to use their Apps and services. Google’s recently announced more than 40 million users are on Google+ but now all those enterprise and Google Apps users will be able to join the hangout party.

Previously it was only open to non-enterprise users who signed up for free accounts at Gmail.com and no business or schools were able to join. You know, like those .edu email accounts and such. Apparently they will all be ale to partake in the circles and hangouts as long as their administrators enable Google+. Google recently stated they’d be allowing Apps users support and today they’ve officially announced just that.

Google is building a migration tool allowing existing Google+ users to port their personal accounts over to their Apps accounts that will keep all of their circles and followers intact. Once completed, users will be able to share and post right inside circles and workgroups for all types of business needs. Google recently added real-time search and hashtags to their new social network site, so it seems they are updating regularly and we can expect more great things in the future. All the details are available right from the Google Blog below.

LG Switch: More dreams of a dual-screen phone [Video]

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 10:51 AM PDT

Whoa, check out this awesome new concept design featuring an LG phone with two displays. Yes this is just a concept but it’s still fun to imagine and the video below is worth a look in itself. This isn’t the Kyocera Echo idea, instead we have a display on the front — and on the back. a two-sided Android smartphone for the ultimate multitasker.

Even though something like this would most likely just be a novely it is still an awesome concept and I could see LG making one in the future. Brought to us by sdigital.com.au we have a new look at smartphones. The idea is simple — switch the way you think, and switch the way you multitask. Simply flip the phone around to the back for true multitasking. From email, browsing or whatever else you have in mind, then just quickly flip it back around and be right where you left off. Obviously we’d use the motion sensors to disable the screen underneath so you don’t accidentally click stuff, but this could actually work quite well.

They’ve even thrown together a neat video for everyone to watch. It is short and sweet but gives you a better idea of the design concept and their sense of direction with the project. We still can’t help it but think of the extremely poor sales the Kyocera Echo experience, and maybe that will be what ultimately stops the idea from moving forward. This was a fun and unique concept and figured you’d like to check it out. Tell us what you think of the idea by dropping us a comment.

LG Prada K2 spotted in the wild looking quite slim

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 10:10 AM PDT

A few new photos have appeared of what we believe is the new LG Prada K2 phone. We first saw a render of the Prada back in July and at some point I saw the blurriest video ever of it too. Today we have some clear photos to give you all a better idea of what to expect with the new LG Prada K2 Android smartphone.

According to the tipster they are calling it the LG Prada P940 but most likely that is the internal codename. We’ve seen reports of an unknown LG P930 rocking a 1280 x 720p display so its fair to assume the new Prada P940 K2 will have the same fate. What we do know, is it sports a 4.3″ NOVA display, an unknown dual-core processor most likely the 1.5 GHz we’ve seen from Qualcomm as of late. A 8 megapixel camera around the back with a 1.3 MP front shooter for video chat.

From the images above you can clearly see the phone has an extremely thin design. If this is a final version it has a few odd buttons on top. We see a power button, 3.5mm headphone jack, some sort of lock toggle switch and then another unknown round button. With names like the Prada and RAZR making their way back into play I’m starting to wonder when we’ll see the LG Chocolate 4G LTE, but that is just me thinking out loud. The Prada K2 will be powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is said to be headed to market this quarter, although a US release is not known at this point. We’ll update when we see more.

Motorola DROID 4 leaked in spy shots

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 09:11 AM PDT

Don’t pull the trigger on that new DROID RAZR just yet, at least if you’re a fan of the original DROID’s slide-out keyboard. Spy shots of the inevitable DROID 4 have just surfaced, with the newfangled tapered look that Motorola’s been favoring lately. The device features a 4-inch screen, like the DROID 3, but considering the timing, it might just have the newer Super AMOLED standard, again, like the DROID RAZR.

Underneath the hood you get a 5-row keyboard with backlit keys, a Verizon 4G LTE connection (a first for the primary DROID line), and Gingerbread 2.3.5. The facade isn’t the only thing the new DROID is sharing with the RAZR: it also has the controversial non-removable battery. There’s no word on which procesor, how much RAM or internal storage the device will feature, but it’ll probably be at or just below the flagship DROID RAZR. Front and rear cameras, the latter with 1080p video recording, round out the package.

Availability is a mystery, but considering that it’s running a slightly outdated version of Gingerbread, we could see this before the end of the year or just afterwards. With the history of the DROID line, a $200 price tag would fit the bill, giving Verizon some much-needed new blood at that price point. We’ll be keeping a sharp eye out for news on this one.

Samsung’s dual-screen SCH-W999 bound for China Telecom

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 07:45 AM PDT

While flip phones have largely fallen out of fashion here in the States, especially when it comes to smartphones, the form factor remains popular in many Asian markets. Samsung appears to be capitalizing on that with the new SCH-W999, an Android phone in the classic flip style with a screen on both sides of the top section. Keep it closed and it’s a rather thick slate, open it up and you’ve got access to a full touchscreen and number pad.

The screens have to be shrunk somewhat to fit the frame of course, but at 3.5 inches it still makes for a sizable device. 800 x 480 resolution on an AMOLED panel should make for a pretty solid viewing experience, and hardware nav buttons on the dial pad will make it easy for users to get around Android when the screen is flipped up. A 1.5GHz processor and 5 megapixel camera round out the package.

The SCH-w999 is joined by the more pedestrian SCH-i929, yet another Samsung Galaxy S II variant with a 4.5-inch screen and an 8 megapixel camera. The photos are courtesy of a Chinese standards office, which says that both phones are headed for China Telecom in the near future. Specific Android versions aren’t mentioned, but Gingerbread seems to be a safe bet. There’s no word on pricing or availability yet, not that it’ll matter for most of our western readers – unfortunately, high-powered flip phones don’t seem to make it out of Asia in most cases.

HTC ThunderBolt gets an Ice Cream Sandwich SDK port

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 06:59 AM PDT

Stock ThunderBolt users are just now getting their first taste of Gingerbread, but all the cool kids are already running versions of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich based off of the Software Development Kit. Verizon’s first LTE phone is the latest to get the treatment, courtesy of the fine folks at RootzWiki. Experienced custom ROM users can flash the software in the usual way via a custom recovery – don’t forget to do a backup!

SDK ports are usually a stop-gap before the source code for the latest version of Android becomes available, and that seems to be the case here. Major functions like the touchscreen, audio and data aren’t working – basically the only thing that the port is good for at the moment is booting up and looking pretty. That isn’t a put-down, mind you; this stuff isn’t easy, and I commend the developer “jdkoreclipse” for his or her efforts. A similar port on the Nexus S is a lot more complete, probably because of the ease of creating ROMs for a developer device.

HTC has committed to bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to as many devices as possible, and to my mind, that certainly includes the high-powered ThunderBolt. But given HTC and Verizon’s pretty dismal upgrade path to Gingerbread, who knows how long it will take. Custom ROM junkies can take solace in the fact that true Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs will probably start popping up only a week or two after the open source code drops later this year.

Android packing gesture controlled Smart TVs coming from Hisense and eyeSight

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 05:25 AM PDT

There are already a bunch of smart TVs on the market today. Smart TVs allow the user to access the internet for all sorts of things from streaming video content to social networking and for playing games. Typically, these smart TVs have operating systems that are not that interesting to geeks. Hisense and eyeSight have announced that they have a new smart TV that is powered by Android and has gesture control right out of the box.

The TV has a 2D camera on the front that recognizes the hand gestures the user makes for controlling the TV. Hisense says that the camera recognizes gestures to control basic TV functions. It would be cool if the gesture control was compatible with game apps too. Controlling Angry Birds with gestures would be cool.

There will be three TV models resulting from the agreement between Hisense and eyeSight. The first is the Series XT710 that landed in China on October 1. As of now, there isn't any indication of if these sets will hit other countries than China, but I would assume the rollout would hit other areas.

Sony shells out $1.47B to buy Ericsson out of joint venture

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 03:24 AM PDT

Early this month word started to circulate that Sony was looking to buy out the Ericsson part of the Sony-Ericsson joint venture for smartphones. The company had previously announced that in 2012 its entire line would be smartphones on Android. The deal has been made official today with Sony forking over big money to buy Ericsson out of the joint venture.

Sony has paid $1.47 billion in cash to Ericsson and the former Sony-Ericsson smartphone line will now be folded into the Sony networked consumer electronics arm. When talks of the purchase first started to circulate the price range for the Ericsson share was between $1.3 and $1.7 billion and Sony landed pretty much in the middle of that range.

Sony and Ericsson will continue to work together and have plans for a new joint project that will promote wireless connectivity. Other than just grabbing the smartphone products, Sony also nabbed a bunch of patents in the purchase as well. Patents have turned out in some cases to be more lucrative for licensing than selling smartphones. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions and is hoped to finish by January 2012.

Google Music page points to Android Market music sales

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 09:29 PM PDT

We’ve been hearing that Google will begin selling music directly for months, and it looks like it’s about to finally come to pass. But don’t take our word for it: head over to music.google.com with your Android device (make sure you’ve got your user agent set to default) and you’ll see something similar to the screenshot on the right. The page mentions “millions of songs in the Android Market”, though both links appear to be inactive at the time of writing.

Google already sells books and movie rentals in the Android Market, highlighted by the latest radical UI shift in the Market app. The Google Music Beta app (not to be confused with the default android Music app) ties in with Google Music to stream music to phones and tablets, but unlike the Amazon Cloud Player, you can’t purchase music and stream it from Google’s servers – yet. Andy Rubin, Google’s Android head honcho, confirmed Google’s plans at the AsiaD conference. Rubin hinted that there would be something more than a standard music store – that it would “have Google in it”.

The music industry is notoriously hard to deal with when it comes to licensing and deals, so it’d no surprise that even the economic muscle of Google and the wide reach of Android haven’t easily swayed the record companies. But if Google is already deploying resources, the launch can’t be that far away. Who’s ready to see Android go head-to-head with iTunes and Amazon?

Galaxy Nexus sign up page is live at Verizon

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 06:51 PM PDT

The Galaxy Nexus is almost upon us, and though Verizon has been relatively mum on the subject so far, it looks like that’s about to change. Like the DROID RAZR a few days ago, the Galaxy Nexus sin-up page is now live. You can be among the first to learn all the pressing details about the Samsung phone on Big Red – all it will cost you is your email address. And your name. And your phone number.

Not much has been made of this, but Ice Cream Sandwich and an incredible screen aren’t the only novel things about the Galaxy Nexus. It’s also the first Nexus model to be available on Verizon, a big deal for Android users hungry for that pure Google experience. Early leaks point to a $299 price tag and a possible November 10th release date, the same as has been confirmed for Motorola’s DROID RAZR and rumored for the HTC Rezound.

The Galaxy Nexus will be the first device to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and an enviable checklist of features like a 4.65-inch 720p Super AMOLED screen, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network should keep it at the front of the Android pack – at least for a few weeks. Other manufacturers like HTC, Motorola and Asus have committed to bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to their latest phones. One of Ice Cream Sandwich’s most anticipated features is equal support for smartphones and tablets, and the very first ICS tablet will probably be Asus’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime, expected on November 9th.

TypeSmart Keyboard Beta translates text as you enter it

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 05:52 PM PDT

There’s a lot of options out there for Android keyboard apps, and a lot of them are good choices, too – Swype, Swiftkey, 8pen, and my personal favorite, Thumb Keyboard, among many, many others. I came across one today that offers a relatively novel feature: it automatically hooks in to Google Translate to allow you to input text in any supported language. TypeSmart Keyboard is still in beta, and free for the moment. If you have to translate between multiple languages often, it’s definitely worth a look.

It works like this: simply type a word or phrase into a text field in the normal way, or use Android’s voice input via the Microphone key. Then hold the Microphone key, tap “Translator,” and select your to and from languages. TypeSmart then sends your text to Google Translate and retrieves the translation, foreign characters, punctuation and all. Even for those of us who are native speakers or bilingual, this could represent a significant time savings versus using the official Google Translator app, or even hunting down the special characters that populate your language of choice.

TypeSmart supports most of the advanced features that soft keyboard junkies are used to: multiple layouts, haptic feedback, text prediction, spelling correction, et cetera. It even features Locale settings and themes for the hopeless tweaker. The developer Comet Apps hasn’t said when the beta program will end, or how much the app will cost when it goes gold, but for those of us who frequently use multiple languages every day, it could be a godsend. You can check it out now in the Android Market.

Fandango Movies for Tablets app available now

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 04:23 PM PDT

Just like the big screen, Fandango is coming to our bigger mobile screens now too. They’ve just released the new Fandango Movies for Tablets applications and you can get it right now. Next time you’re in the mood for a flick you can simply do everything you need right from your tablet, they even offer HD movie trailers for our lovely 7″ and 10″ 1280 x 800 resolution tabs.

Browse movies at nearby theaters, search for the nearest theater with Google Maps, read reviews, watch HD movie trailers and even buy your tickets all without leaving the couch. I’ve been a long time user of Fandango and love the application but now having a Honeycomb and tablet optimized version is even better. I usually use the app while I’m out and about but this is great for those tablet users.

They offer tons of options and even show movies that are coming soon, with full voice search you can find and preview and flick you’d like with the new app for tablets. Basically everything found in the smaller phone version is present but prettier and bigger for tablets. You can even purchase movies right inside the app using a credit card or even Fandango bucks or gift cards. If you are a fan of movies be sure to give this new app for tablets a test. It’s in the Android market and you can try it now by clicking here.

Motorola DROID RAZR costs $649 off-contract

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 03:59 PM PDT

Eager to get your hands on the DROID RAZR‘s sexy hardware without tying yourself down with a two-year contract? Nobody said being a free spirit was cheap: the phone will cost $649.99 from Verizon without a new contract or renewal. The news was broken by Droid-Life, who got a look at the DROID RAZR’s listing in Verizon’s internal device database.

All things considered, that’s about what we expected for the DROID RAZR. Over in the UK they’ll be paying £454.80, or about $716 USD. It’s still pretty darn expensive for a smartphone, but not stupendously so, when you consider that the cheapest iPhone 4S is the same price while offering a whole lot less in the hardware department. Kevlar beats glass, in case anyone was wondering. A qHD Super AMOLED screen, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 4G LTE data speeds and a 7.7mm frame should make this a hard decision, even with the equally impressive Galaxy Nexus coming soon.

The DROID RAZR’s introductory price for those of us that toil under contractual obligation is $299.99, and pre-orders begin tomorrow, October 27th. The phone itself will ship “no later than” November 10th. The phone will sell internationally as the “Motorola RAZR”, and in most major markets should be available around the same time. So what do you think – too expensive, a bargain or right on the money?

HTC Raider sailing to Rogers with 4G LTE for just $149

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 03:22 PM PDT

The new HTC Raider codenamed the Holiday is all set to finally hit the shelves and reach our pockets, but with Rogers for now. While we are still waiting for a US launch like the leaks for AT&T suggest, Rogers will be getting this new 4.5″ 4G LTE smartphone here shortly, possibly as soon as November 1st.

We’ve seen plenty of the Raider (Holiday) and it was first leaked to the web back in August and we quickly learned it will be called the Raider. You can get all the details from HTC’s official announcement but what we have is a 4.5″ qHD smartphone with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage and a beastly 8MP camera with dual LED flash.

Headed to Rogers Canada the HTC Raider will run with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and HTC Sense 3.0 UI. The awesomely low price listed above is on a new 3-year contract from Rogers. We don’t have an official launch date or what regular contract pricing will be at this time but for those in Canada this is one great smartphone. Apparently if users get a family plan with two lines of voice and data Rogers will also give buyers a free Galaxy Tab 10.1 — sweet deal huh? I’d be picking up a few HTC Raiders and enjoying that free tablet if I was chillin up in Canada.

Android-based i’m Watch is our new favorite buzzword machine

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 03:07 PM PDT

Ever since Dick Tracy started talking into his wrist, sci-fi aficionados have craved the watch-phone hybrid. And every few years, some company comes along to make on without really considering whether or not it’s a good idea. The latest is the i’m Watch [sic], and if buzzwords could be translated into direct sales, not even Apple would be able to stand against it.

The i’m Watch is a lot like an updated version of the old Fossil Palm watches: a full touchscreen Android device crammed down into the size of a large digital watch. Its 1.54-inch, 240 x 240 display uses a custom interface and apps to manage your calls and contacts, and the 450 mAh battery is rated for a single day of use, or five hours of constant use. Naturally the watch doesn’t conform to Google’s idea of an Android smartphone, so it’s using its own app store for software support. And here’s the kicker: the i’m Watch isn’t a really a phone. There’s no built-in voice or data connection – it needs to tether to an Android, Blackberry, iPhone or what have you via Bluetooth in order to do access anything that’s not already on its 4Gb of storage.

Check out the video below, and see how many buzzwords you can catch in four and a half minutes:

The Italian startup will begin selling the i’m Watch in January, starting at $300. And again, that doesn’t include any real connectivity – it won’t replace your current smartphone, because you have to have some method of connecting to the Internet to access calls and texts. Normally we try to shy away from declarative judgements for unreleased products, but my money’s going towards something a little cheaper and more substantial, like, say, the Sony Ericsson LiveView or the MotoACTV. Dick Tracy would be ashamed.

Namco brings Puzzle Quest 2 to Android

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 02:32 PM PDT

Looking for something a little more low-key after you blast your way through Shadowgun? One of the strangest and most-loved portable titles in recent years is coming to the Android Market, and if you’re a fan of either puzzle games or role playing games, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Puzzle Quest 2, originally released on the Nintendo DS last year, combines a meandering swords and sorcery story with, well, puzzles. It’s basically Final Fantasy meets Bejeweled… no, wait, keep reading!

Despite its bizarre premise, the original Puzzle Quest and its sequels have garnered almost universal praise from the gaming press. The addictive gameplay has won it a lot of fans on the DS, Xbox Live Arcade and PC, and now fans new and old can squeeze in a quick dungeon in on a bus ride or what have you on their Android phone. Puzzle Quest 2 has already been released on iOS and Windows Phone 7, but we’ll forgive Namco their uninformed decision-making this time.

Puzzle Quest 2 is a “freemium” game; the core app is free on the Android Market, but the full unlock is $4.99. Additional character classes are two dollars a pop. That seems a little high for a mobile app, but remember, this is based off a full Nintendo DS title (the complete download is almost 300 MB) so the main story mode should last for a lot longer than your average $3 game. Specific models weren’t mentioned, but phones and tablets with 800 x 480 screen resolution or higher are supported.

Today Shadowgun by Madfinger games is finally here and available in the Android Market. If you’re a fan of games like Gears of War and wish you had them on your Android device, then you’ll want to give this game a try. We’ve been lucky enough to already enjoy this awesome third person shooter so check out the pictures and video after the break, then run to the market or the NVIDIA Tegrazone and give it a try for just $4.99.

SHADOWGUN puts you into the role of John Slade, a bounty hunter in the year 2350 where evil corporations are the rule of law that go around hiring bounty hunters to do their dirty work — they call these bounty hunters Shadowguns. This game has some of the best graphics and AI I’ve seen on a mobile device thus far and it truly is one of if not the best shooter for Android. With the help of the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor in our favorite tablets this game really comes to life. With realistic action, lighting and special effects that are stunning, and real life physics you’ll be just as blown away as I was when we first played this game.

NVIDIA showed the game off back in May and we got our first hands-on look at E3 this year. For all the pictures you’d like check out our full review since we were lucky enough to preview this awesome game a bit early. Check out my hands-on video below for a first hand look at the actual gameplay.

SHADOWGUN hands-on gameplay

Shadowgun features:

– Immersive visual presentation, never seen before on mobile devices
– It ain’t just pretty — it’s gorgeous! Advanced lighting effects, beautifully rendered environments, and pro voices make this one of the most advanced games for Android
– Single-player story-driven campaign with playtime lasting around 6 hours
– 10 highly detailed and beautifully rendered levels
– Immersive storyline with multiple outcomes! You decide how it ends!
– Unlock the detailed “Shadowpedia”, and read more about the SHADOWGUN universe!
– Featuring the most advanced combat A.I. to date. Enemies flank, seek cover, and utilize teamwork to take you down! Battle automated sentries, aerial drones, and other lethal foes
– Solve hacking mini-games to whet your nerdy appetite, then get back to blasting enemies and more!
– Survive the onslaught of Dr. Simon’s deadly creations, including end-level bosses, mutated grunts, killer machines, and more!

After reading that feature list what else do you need to know? This game sounds amazing and trust me, it is just that — amazing! I've played plenty of mobile games on both iOS and Android but the level of detail, textures, and overall rendered environment in Shadowgun make it the best I've seen yet. The amazing graphics and realistic lighting all stems from the awesome power of the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and MadFinger teamed up with NVIDIA to make this the best game possible and we are even hearing a better quad-core version will be available when the time comes.

With great graphics and enemies that will flank you at will this game has plenty to enjoy. You can run and duck for cover, use a wide array of weapons and shotguns, then battle huge bosses to finish out each level. I’ve played a solid 5 hours so far and still not quite done so this game is not only awesome, but it also has re-playability and length. Plus it’s as long as some cheaper PC games. SHADOWGUN is well worth the $4.99 and I totally recommend you go out and snatch it up so you can enjoy some shooting and carnage yourself.

ASUS Transformer Prime tablet pictured with new keyboard dock

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 01:53 PM PDT

The ASUS Transformer Prime is set to be one awesome quad-core tablet, most likely rocking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the NVIDIA Tegra 3. Today its been spotted along with its keyboard dock friend showing off its sleek design and aluminum frame. It was recently teased on video and ASUS has also launched an official page for the Prime.

First seen in the wild a few days ago with some ASUS execs at the AsiaD show, today we are getting another look at the hardware posing with its main selling point. That being the keyboard dock that “transforms” it into a powerful notebook machine. You can see the similarities although this time around they’ve gone for a brushed aluminum design and some fancy black chicklet-style keys. Looks a bit like a MacBook if you ask me, but that isn’t a bad thing.

These spy shots of the new tablet and keyboard dock were found on a chinese website but were quickly taken down. Our friends from Notebook Italia were quick enough to save a few for our viewing pleasure. We have a 10″ display as usual along with some audio ports, micro-HDMI and a micro-SD slot as well. While being shown at AsiaD it was also stated that we will get an official announcement and full details on November 9th. We expect to hear some juicy details regarding that new quad-core processor inside and Ice Cream Sandwich so be sure and stay tuned for the full details come November 9th.

Android Collectible: Don Pablo Calaveroid – Day of the Dead Android

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 01:04 PM PDT

Who wants more Android collectibles from the highly popular Dead Zebra group? Now that Halloween is fast approaching the guys from DYZPlastic have teamed up with the Beast Brothers to bring a little Mexican flair to our favorite Android collectibles. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is what we got in return with a Don Pablo special edition Android.

If you are wondering just what Dead Zebra and their collectibles are all about you can click here for all our coverage. The first round of collectibles were back in February of 2010 then a series 2 the following year. The last round of collectibles was back in August but we are expecting more soon especially with this latest tease shown above.

For those looking to celebrate Halloween or Dia de los Muertos now you can do it with a bit of Android flair and from the amount of details on the android I think they’ve even hit that 15 pieces of flair minimum, although Office Space has nothing to do with Halloween. To get your very own special edition Calaveriod be sure to check by the Dead Zebra Shop on the Day of the Dead. That is November 1st, and they’ll be available starting at 11 AM EST and again at 11 PM EST. They go fast and are limited to 1 per person so you better hurry as they are usually a big hit.

Verizon 4G LTE rollout ahead of schedule, already reaching 185 million customers

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 12:22 PM PDT

When Verizon announced their new 4G LTE network they had a few goals set in terms of the rollout, and how many customers would be able to take advantage of the new network. Today Verizon has announced that the original goal of 185 million customers has already been reached and that they are ahead of schedule, not to mention that they’ve also already reached their goal for the amount of markets that actually have 4G LTE.

With the 22 new markets last week and 17 more receiving the upgrade to 4G LTE next month, Verizon will have successfully launched their new and improved network in 178 markets across the US. Neat huh? With phones like the upcoming Galaxy Nexus and the recently released 4G LTE Samsung Stratosphere Verizon has the top end and the entry level covered. They have 4G for any users budget and are aiming for 15 LTE capable devices by the end of 2011.

Currently Verizon 4G LTE is the fastest network around, and reaches more Americans than most but AT&T also has some 4G LTE aspirations. Currently AT&T 4G LTE is only available in 5 cities across the US, but they have big plans for the future. With the news today that Verizon has already reached their goals and are well ahead of schedule, the hill just got even steeper for the folks in blue over at AT&T. Things are looking good for Verizon and if you’ve been debating a 4G LTE phone now is a good time to buy, but I’d wait for that new Samsung Galaxy Nexus if it were me.
