Alpha ROM for Android ICS on Xperia smartphones available

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 08:15 AM PST

If you are, the owner of certain Sony Ericsson Xperia Android smartphones that can't wait to get Android 4.0 ICS onto your device the alpha ROM is available right now. There are multiple catches to this ROM that you need to be aware of before you run over and download it to try ICS out. The ROM will work only with the arc S, neo V and Xperia ray smartphones and brings the device to Android 4.0.1.

The ROM is noted to be only for devs and it will not work for ordinary use since only a few of the features are working. One big catch is that it won’t allow phone calls to be made. The phone must be unlocked using the Sony Ericsson Unlock bootloader service. Once you unlock that boot loader, you will not be able to get the final ICS update on the phone.

Other limitations of the Alpha ROM include no Bluetooth, WiFi, ANT+, or FM radio. The Modem is turned off, the SIM card doesn’t work, and GMS apps are not included, like Gmail. There are a number of ICS features included with the Roboto font, Holo theme, updated UI web browser, and integration with the new messaging bar among others. Check out the video below to see the ROM in action.

Archos 35 home connect now available

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 07:56 AM PST

It has been a long time since June when SlashGear went hands-on with the Archos 35. Honestly, we had expected the thing to be here before now. If you have been counting the days until you could get your hands on the device, it is now available at retail. If you don't remember what the thing was all about, I doubt you are alone considering it has been about half a year since we fiddled with the gadget.

The Archos 35 home connects a little music box that is meant to sit on your nightstand or a desk. It can be used in other places too. It uses WiFi and offers web radio and alarm clock functionality to wake you to MP3s or web radio if you want. The device is customizable and allows the user to put apps on it that they want to use.

Archos promises that the sound quality is good and the device has a headphone jack and a touchscreen for navigation. You can pick one up directly from Archos or other web stores for $149.99. Chris at SlashGear did note in his hands-on that it felt a bit plasticy and cheap.

10 Billion Apps promo, final day: Camera ZOOM, Shine Runner and Heavy Gunner for 10¢

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 06:53 AM PST

It’s been a fun ride, but now it’s over: Google’s 10 Billion Apps celebration has reached its final day. For the last nine days the company has been celebrating the Android Market’s pivotal achievement of 10 billion total app downloads by discounting paid apps to a dramatic 10 cents. Some of the best-selling apps available have been put on sale by 90% or more. Today’s new apps include Camera ZOOM FX, Shine Runner and Heavy Gunner 3D.

Here’s the links for the new on-sale apps for day 10: Camera ZOOM FXHeavy Gunner 3D, Hyper Jump, Majesty: Fantasy Kingdom Sim, Puffle Launch, Shine Runner, Talking Ben the Dog, and TileStorm HD. The other apps, Sentinel 3: Homeworld, Star Chart, Apparatus and Color & Draw for kids, were available on previous days as well. The Android Market home page has not been updated yet, so just use the links above to find your apps.

If you hurry, you can still get the apps from day 9 at their discounted price as well. Many users are experienceing issues verifying their purchase on phones and tablets – to avoid this, either use the web version of the Android Market, or just wait for a few hours until the hubbub dies down. If you can’t get the discounted apps to download even then, Google may just give them to you – a nice touch on the customer service front.

So readers, what’s your favorite new app from the 10 Billion Apps promotion? Check out the complete history of discounted apps in the links below, then sound off in the comment section.

Logitech Revue owners petition for unlockable bootloader

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 06:28 AM PST

Google TV has seen better days. After an exciting start, the HTPC platform has been largely ignored by mainstream consumers, and the two hardware launch partners remain the only makers of Google TV devices to date. Logitech’s Google TV users remain a small but dedicated lot, and they’re growing increasingly frustrated over a lack of support and late updates. In order to have full access to the Revue hardware, a group of owners have petitioned the company to unlock the boootloader, in order to easily and effectively create custom ROMs and other mods.

Logitech Revue owners are probably much more dedicated to Google TV than Logitech at the moment: the company has decided to stop producing hardware after crushing losses on the expensive set-top box. The Google TV Honeycomb update has been available for Sony’s various Google TV devices for weeks, but some Revue users are still having trouble updating their equipment. The slow update is certainly at least partly to blame for the frustration of advanced users, many of whom would rather “roll their own” as far as software goes, in the same way that Android smartphone owners can do with custom ROMs.

Advanced Revue users have been able to root the device since just after its release, but jut like some Motorola an HTC smartphones, a locked bootloader makes more intense customization almost impossible. Rudimentary custom ROMs can be loaded onto devices with locked bootloaders, but modified kernels can’t, making significant updates to Android (for example, a modified Google TV OS based on Ice Cream Sandwich) basically impossible. Logitech has not responded to the users’ request, but the petition is currently sitting with nearly 800 digital signatures. While Logitech has very little to lose by granting the request, since they’re ending production on the Revue anyway, such petitions are rarely successful.

Sony Ericsson and Box give Xperia owners 50GB of storage

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 05:06 AM PST

Sony Ericsson has announced that it has teamed up with cloud storage provider Box. The partnership will give users of Xperia branded smartphones access to 50GB of file sharing and storage free. That free storage can be used to store all the digital files you need including photos, music, and video. The free storage is accessed with the Box for Android app.

The special offer is running from December 15, 2011 through December 31, 2012 and is available for any Xperia user worldwide. To access the free 50GB of storage the user needs to log in only once during that special period to gain access to the 50GB for the life of the account. The offer is even good on Xperia that launch next year as long as the log-in is done before December 31 of 2012.

The company says that the 50GB of storage is enough space for about 50,000 docs, photos, and presentations. I am sure that Box is hoping all these users sign up for additional storage or services to offset the cost of the free storage.

Android now supported on VIA embedded x86 mainboards

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 04:36 AM PST

VIA has announced something cool that will be perfect for developers and other users that want to work up an Android OS computer for digital signage, in-car entertainment or other needs. VIA has announced that its embedded x86 mainboards now support Android. The first of its boards to get Android support is the little EITX-3002.

With the addition of Android to the mix, VIA embedded mainboards now support Android 2.2, Windows 7, Windows 7 Embedded, and Debian Linux. VIA also has a new Embedded Tool Kit to allow Android to monitor and control peripherals through the OS. The little mainboard is small and uses the Em-ITX from factor. VIA says that it is the first to get Android support.

The small board uses the front and back to maximize components in a small space. It supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 and can support multiple screens. It offers VGA, HDMI, and LVDS connectivity and has a pair of USB ports 3.0 ports are optional with six USB 2.0 ports included.

Grand Theft Auto III arrives in Android Market

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 11:57 PM PST

Just as expected, Grand Theft Auto III has arrived in the Android Market, offering some classic high-speed gameplay on your Android phone or tablet. Priced at $4.99 in the US and £3.23 in the UK, the 10 Year Anniversary version of the game runs at HD resolution and supports select USB controllers.

Those with a Galaxy Nexus may have to wait a little before they get their game on, however; Rockstar says the title is “coming soon” to the new handset. We’re guessing that’s an Ice Cream Sandwich compatibility issue. As for existing device support, the list is as follows:

Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

You can download Grand Theft Auto III here; it’s not a small game, though, weighing in at a hefty 18MB. Let us know whether it brings back good memories in the comments!

Galaxy Nexus LTE on sale at Verizon

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 11:49 PM PST

Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus by Samsung is now on sale through the carrier’s website, with the LTE 4G version of the Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone priced at $299.99 with a new, two-year agreement. The unsubsidized price is $649.99. Announced officially yesterday, the smartphone is the first to officially run Android 4.0.

That makes a big difference in usability, with Ice Cream Sandwich pulling together elements from Gingerbread and Honeycomb to make Android feel more consistent and improve things like multitasking. More details in the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus review over at SlashGear.

Verizon brick & mortar stores will be offering the Galaxy Nexus LTE from this morning, and we know plenty of you are preparing to head down and pick up this third Nexus device. Let us know in the comments if you’re going to grab a new Nexus!

Google finally advertises their Samsung Galaxy Nexus on TV with two new commercials

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 09:11 PM PST

The only other commercial of a “Nexus” device seen so far was of the Nexus S 4G, and it wasn’t even sponsored by Google. Well, that changes soon with a couple cleverly funny commercials made by the manufacturer. The first commercial embedded below is my favorite – a child tries unlocking his father’s Galaxy Nexus using the face unlock feature by making faces towards the Nexus. When all fails, he hopelessly hands the device over to his dad and finally gets to use the device. We all saw a commercial like this coming, and it was produced perfectly.

The second advertises Google+ Hangouts on the Galaxy Nexus, a great feature to video chat with multiple people. Whether you need to schedule a meeting with co-workers or just talk with a bunch of friends – Hangouts on the Galaxy Nexus will make it seamless. If it works half as well as it does in the commercial, then it would be safe to say video chatting on a mobile device has come a long way.

Unlike the other phones currently advertised, these two commercials actually bring brand new features to the table. I foresee this as the future trend with Google innovation products such as the Nexus. These commercials will have to satisfy you all for now, but check back in the morning for our unboxing of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus! It took quite a long time for Verizon to finally release the device – and some thought this day would never come. Take a look at the timeline below:

MIUI lockscreen now available in Android Market

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 08:12 PM PST

If you’ve ever had the privilege to use a device sporting a MIUI ROM, then you’ll be thrilled to know the lockscreen is now available in the Android Market under the name MiLocker. Even better, there are a multitude of themes already available – and all customizable. The library of lockscreens have been created by many different designers and have different unlocking sequences.

You can slide horizontally, vertically, unlock to applications, and even animated unlocking. The zipper unlock seems the most unique to me. Unfortunately, some of the shortcuts can’t be modified to open preferred applications. Like Adria Nicole said in the user reviews – there isn’t a way to set your preferred messaging program to Google Voice from the stock messaging app. Many, including myself, use Google Voice to completely replace messaging – so this could be a serious setback.

Fortunately, I’m just fine with the standard AOSP 2.3 (Gingerbread) lockscreen. Most of these lockscreen applications – including WidgetUnlocker, Lock 2.0, and Sense 3.0 Magic Locker – tend to delay when turning on my device. Sometimes they even show up in conjunction to the stock lockscreen, so there isn’t really a point for me to use them. It may just be my device (LG Revolution 4G), but maybe not. Do any of you all have this problem?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus as low as $155 through LetsTalk

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 07:19 PM PST

Starting at 3:01AM EST (12:01 PST) you can grab the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon for $154.99 on a new 2-yr contract. Those of you just looking to upgrade will be priced at $174.99, but seeing as Verizon’s price is $299.99 – this is quite the deal. The phone’s price is set to $224.99 on LetsTalk’s website, but using the promotional code found on their Facebook page, you can instantly save $75.

The promo code is $75VZN and should be applied at checkout. However, when you check out the service plans available at LetsTalk, the only data option available is for 2GB (doubled to 4GB for the holidays). I’m not sure if you’ve ever used Verizon’s LTE before, but it blows through data much faster than your average 3G network. For me, 4GB would get used up halfway through the month.

There’s bound to be more deals over the horizon, but offering one of this magnitude on the devices’ day of release can’t be beaten. Also odd, are the customer reviews over on LetsTalk’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus page. They all point towards reviewing the Casio GZ. They may have just recycled a phone page within their database – but lets hope they don’t fumble with the massive amount of Nexus orders they’re about to receive in 5 hours.

Nokia director says youths are confused with Android, probably doesn’t have kids

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 05:10 PM PST

A little verbal back-and-forth is normal among megacorproations, and since Nokia is on the defensive, they’re not above dishing some out. Speaking with Pocket Lint, Nokia’s director of Portfolio, Product Marketing & Sales Niels Munksgaard claimed that Android phones don’t sit well with young people on account of its complexity. He went on to say that they don’t want the iPhone, because everyone already has one. I’ll give you ten points if you can find the error in that statement.

“What we see is that youth are pretty much fed up with iPhones… Also, many are not happy with the complexity of Android and the lack of security,” said Munksgaard. He reaffirmed Nokia’s commitment to “different” phones, by running Windows Phone 7. You know, that OS that’s been available for over a year and hasn’t cracked 10% market share yet. Nokia has already started shipping WP7 devices in Europe, and T-Mobile will be the first to sell them in the United States.

To be fair, you’d have a hard time arguing that Android is as easy as iOS or WP7 to use. But calling it difficult it a bit of a stretch; my 75-year-grandmother manages her DROID 3 like a champ, and she’s been known to get confused by her microwave. (Love you, Grandma.) And the market has spoken for itself: with Android pushing past 50% share in markets around the world, including the US and UK, Nokia has got a lot of work to do before they’re ready to play with the big boys again.

Disclaimer: I don’t know Mr. Munksgaard. I’m sure he’s a very nice man and his children, if he has any, are lovely. I probably shouldn’t have used his uninformed and inflammatory statement to laugh at Nokia’s fall from the top of the smartphone world to the very bottom.

Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus gets ICS 4.0.2 update a day before release

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 04:19 PM PST

When you tear apart the Verizon Galaxy Nexus packaging with your teeth tomorrow and boot up you phone for the very first time, odds are pretty good that you’ll be prompted to install an update right away. One of the central tenants of the Nexus line is that it gets frequent, timely updates straight from Google, and the Galaxy Nexus is no exception. Droid Life spotted one in the wild running an updated Ice Cream Sandwich firmware: Android 4.0.2.

We’ve already seen one minor update to the Galaxy Nexus’ software, 4.0.1. Both updates don’t appear to do that much – just your basic stability enhancers, most likely, though Google will probably articulate the changes after the official release. These updates are for Verizon’s LTE version of the phone, not the international HSPA+ version. You know, the one that’s been available for a month now.

As far as software goes, there’s no indication that this update includes Google Wallet functionality. Google’s NFC payment app has been a point of contention for Verizon, as they’re preparing their own NFC system as part of the ISIS consortium. Officially Google Wallet won’t be available on the Galaxy Nexus because of “security issues”. Take that for what it’s worth. We’ll be getting our own Verizon Galaxy Nexus review units tomorrow, and we’ll be digging through the software from stem to stern for your reading pleasure.

Google Music Holiday Sale: 100 songs for only 25¢

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 04:14 PM PST

Google’s hugely popular 10¢ app sale must have been a pretty great success because they’ve now announced that Google Music will be getting a similar treatment for the holiday season. Available right now Google is offering 100 of their top holiday songs all for just 25¢ each to get everyone in the holiday spirit. Buy some songs, stream them with your Android and enjoy some hot cocoa this Christmas season.

For everything you need to know about the and awesome music store check out our Google Music portal. Google Music has been quite popular since first being released officially in November. Offering daily free songs and tons of top artists for low prices they seem to be taking a slightly different approach with their new music store.

Google offered entire albums for $1.99 on Cyber Monday and are now offering 100′s of holiday songs for just a quarter. I think they’ve learned that everyone loves a good deal — myself included. Where else can you legally get 'My Kinda Christmas' by Dean Martin for only 25¢ anyways right? If this all sounds good to you or you’re in the market for some new Christmas music stop by the Android Market for the full list of deals.

Galaxy Nexus to cost $649 off-contract, on sale online at 1AM EST

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 03:30 PM PST

A lot of you are probably counting out your pennies this very moment for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. New customers and those eligible for an upgrade can get the phone for $299.99 tomorrow, but if you don’t fall into either of those categories, be prepared to shell out $649.99 for the off-contract price. A Verizon representative confirmed the full price to Android Community moments ago.

At least you won’t have to wait long to order it: Verizon’s web store will begin selling the phone at 1 AM Eastern Standard time on December 15th – just about 6.5 hours from now. The announcement was made on Verizon’s Twitter account. Of course, you can probably get it faster at a Verizon corporate store or reseller, but there’s probably at least two or three Nexus fans out there with a modicum of patience. The advantage to ordering online is that you won’t have to worry about your local store running out of stock.

We’ll take this time to remind you that Verizon’s Double Data Deal is still in effect. New customers can sign up for a 4G LTE data plan and get twice as much data for the same price. So, if you opt for the $30 data plan, normally 2GB, you get 4GB before you’re charged for an overage. Step up to the 5GB plan, and you get 10GB for $50. At the top of the heap is the 10GB plan for $80, now bumped up to a whopping 20GB. The extra bandwidth will be active for the life of your Verizon account.

So readers, will you be huddled around your monitor late tonight, or preparing camping supplies?

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II software update rolling out now

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 03:09 PM PST

Today T-Mobile and Samsung are pushing out a software update for the highly popular 4.52″ screen packing Galaxy S II. It looks like those HTC handsets over on T-Mobile aren’t the only ones having some upgrade fun this week. The Galaxy S II T-Mobile update is rolling out as we speak and should also be available via Kies for those opting for that route as usual.

Just like the recent HTC Amaze 4G update the SGSII has now received WiFi calling and a few other improvements like T-Mo Caller ID. We have already posted a full review of the Galaxy S II and this phone will only get better with updates and improvements as it’s already an awesome phone. Get it this weekend for free with the T-Mobile 4G Super Sale.

Full details on the OTA update can be found over at the T-Mo support page. Other than the few new changes mentioned above they are also toting better battery life and performance. Something every update usually lists as a new feature and we’ll be sure to give it a test. That is all they mention so it appears to be a relatively small update and should only take a few minutes should users accept the “optional” update. It should arrive sometime over the next week and as usual you can manually update by going to menu > settings > about phone > check for updates. Enjoy!

Verizon finally announces the Galaxy Nexus: December 15th for $299 [UPDATE]

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 02:30 PM PST

Yes, America, there is a Santa Claus. Almost two months after the official Hong Kong announcement, and nearly as long since Verizon put up a generic signup page, the US carrier has finally announced availability information for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. We’ve confirmed the information with a Verizon representative. Customers on a new or renewed two-year contract can pick up the first Ice Cream Sandwich phone on December 15th, tomorrow, for $299.99.

Verizon is the first carrier to make the CDMA/LTE model of the Galaxy Nexus available. Like all Nexus phones, the LTE model will be unlocked, but because Verizon’s wireless bands are unique, it won’t work on any other carrier. $299 gets you the 32GB version, an important consideration since the Galaxy Nexus does not feature a MicroSD card slot.

Other differences from the GSM HSPA+ model that’s been available oversees for weeks are a slightly thicker 9.47mm profile and a larger 1850mAh battery, presumably to deal with the larger power drain from the LTE radio. The LTE model has slightly different styling as well, with a darker side panel and Verizon branding – a first for the Nexus line.

On the inside, Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus runs the same Android 4  operating system that Americans have been lusting after since October. Verizon has pre-loaded at least two carrier apps, but thanks to Ice Cream Sandwich‘s built-in app disable feature, it’s easy to get to a completely stock experience quickly. Retail units may already be updated to Android 4.1. The rest of Ice Cream Sandwich’s features, like facial recognition, a new launcher and user interface, Android Beam and the rest, should all be intact.

For those Verizon customers who aren’t eligible for an upgrade, the off-contract price is still up in the air. AT&T and T-Mobile users are still in the dark as far as availability is concerned, but imported versions of the phone should work with United States SIM cards – if you’re willing to pay the steep price.

Still not convinced? Then check out our hands-on coverage of the HSPA+ version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

PRADA Phone 3.0 by LG hands-on

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 12:37 PM PST

LG and PRADA have teamed up again for what they are officially calling PRADA Phone by LG 3.0 and we have some hands-on video of the new fashionable smartphone. During an event in London today we learned the full details and were able to fondle the phone for a brief moment and from initial impressions it’s very sleek, thin, lightweight, and sexy.

The PRADA Phone was shown off earlier this morning and has been leaked a few times in the recent past being called the Prada K2. Today we put on our favorite wool scarf and attended the official event to enjoy this new and fancy 4.3″ Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone. Here’s our video to get you started.

PRADA Phone by LG 3.0 hands-on

The PRADA 3.0 is obviously the 3rd device to carry the branding but this time around we have Android to liven things up. It’s tall, sleek, and slim but rocks some impressive specs and a brilliantly bright 4.3″ NOVA display — although sadly just 800 x 480 and no HD screen like the recently released LG Nitro HD.

Powered by Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread and a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor we also get 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a few powerful cameras to capture that perfect moment — or some nice shoes. Offering an 8 megapixel shooter on the back and 1.3 up front for video chat. The rear has a leather-like soft touch plastic backing that should hold up longer than genuine leather — but the idea did cross their minds. Performance is smooth and swift as you can see from the video although the custom interface changes are a bit odd to say the least.

The new PRADA is extremely thin and has a pretty blocky design, very similar to the recently released Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone. It does have a few neat features like the round power/wake button with an illuminating LED ring. We also have circular stereo speakers down on the bottom to keep things stylish.

LG has promised Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates for their lineup although this phone may be heading in a different direction, but we do expect an update at some point from LG and PRADA. Let us know what you think and enjoy a few photos below.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus Simulator webpage goes live

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 12:13 PM PST

Hmm. We are still waiting for any sort of official announcement from Verizon that this phone is actually launching this week, but at least they are dropping us a few small hints. Verizon has just released a “simulator” page that allows users to basically experience the Samsung Galaxy Nexus from within a browser. Yes this is neat — but I’d really just like the phone please.

With Big Red’s moment to make an announcement slowly disappearing this week we have been getting tips and reports that the device is still set to launch tomorrow, December 15th. We’ve also had a few tips suggesting Friday instead but obviously nothing is confirmed. We could see a silent launch with device being available at stores and retailers at the expected times but I can’t imagine them not going forward with any advertising — although it doesn’t have the word DROID in the title.

While we continue to tap our feet and patiently wait for Verizon to officially announce something users can be relieved to know that Verizon is at least getting ready. With this site going live and retail stores nationwide receiving shipments all week long the day is coming — we just sadly still don’t fully know when that day will be. Hopefully we’ll be running down to our nearest Verizon store tomorrow morning to pick one up. Either way we’ll know soon.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now American Airlines in-flight entertainment

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 11:47 AM PST

American Airline flights are about to get even better with some quality entertainment to go along with those honey roasted peanuts. We reported earlier this year that Samsung and AA had agreed to offer the Samsung Galaxy Tablets to select planes and passengers for in-flight fun, or in-flight Angry Birds and now they’ve officially started just that.

Starting today, passengers that are flying first or business class will no longer have to sit and stare at others while reaching for the air controls overhead — instead they’ll be handed a shiny and powerful dual-core powered Galaxy Tab 10.1 by the nearest flight attendant.

During this initial rollout starting today, customers can choose from over 70 movies, including 30 new releases, with three titles exclusive to American from Paramount. Not to mention a wide array of TV shows and even audio selections for easy listening while they casually nap up in first class. They will also be receiving Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones on request.

According to the official statement AA has a custom user interface that will overlay the standard Android experience to allow quick, easy, and user friendly navigation to all the content. Or to stop everyone from doing anything else on these here tablets. Many JFK and LAX flights will be the first to enjoy this new level of entertainment as the rollout slowly hits others nationwide.
