HTC One X takes a skydive to show off camera

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 09:51 AM PDT

When business types instruct their marketing team to “go the extra mile”, they’re usually figuratively referring to a lateral mile – not a 2-mile vertical freefall. But in HTC’s case, the latter is more appropriate: to demonstrate the fidelity and speed of the 8-megapixel f/2.0 camera on the HTC One X (which we noted ourselves in the review), they set up a skydiving fashion shoot, complete with photographer, model and lighting crew. The results are interesting to say the least.

Here’s the setup: student fashion photographer and skydiving rookie Nick Jojola was instructed to capture a photo (while taking video) of model and expert skydiver Roberta Mancino with the HTC One X. He’s joined by a safety diver (the guy who’s tethered to him) two divers streaming smoke and two with a pair of high-powered lights. Roberta is wearing a high-fashion skydiving suit created especially for the shoot – that’s the thing that looks like a buzzard after it’s gone though a Cessna windshield.

The team had only 50 seconds of operating time before they had to deploy their parachutes. They arranged themselves in a formation of three vertical rows: the two streamers on the bottom, Nick and his safety diver in the middle with the HTC One X, and the lighting team and Roberta on top. When Nick was in position Roberta assumed a head-first position and dived for the shot. It took two goes, but the results speak for themselves:

Publicity stunt? Certainly. Cool? Absolutely. While you’re not likely to need split-second shutter speed in your everyday travels (most of which are somewhat closer to sea level) the shoot illustrates the fast response of the One series camera rather well. HTC hasn’t posted the full commercial yet, but it’ll probably be showing up on European TV sets in the next few weeks. Here’s a making-of just for fun:

Draw Something gets 50 million downloads in 50 days

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 07:12 PM PDT

Angry Birds? Small stuff. Instagram? Hipster fodder. Apparently the real mobile gaming sensation is Draw Something from startup OMGPOP!. The Pictionary-style Android and iOS game has racked up an incredible 50 million downloads in as many days across both platforms. At least 10 million (and probably a good bit more) come from the free Android version, and another 500,000 to a million have paid for the upgraded game. iTunes doesn’t publish its app numbers, but Draw Something has consistently held the top spot among games there and in the Google Play Store.

A few weeks after Draw Something blew up, OMGPOP! was bought outright by Zynga for $180 million. That’s something like EA buying BioWare in the tumultuous world of mobile gaming – Zynga’s got the similar dirty reputation, and the piles and piles of cash. Not that OMGPOP! is hurting or anything: Draw Something has an impressively diverse collection of paid and fremium models, relying on minimal ads and in-app purchases of extra paints for better pictures. Some players have taken an insane amount of time into answering their prompts, like the finger-painted masterpiece above from Art Of Draw Something.

The app’s ease of use, pick-up-and-play pacing, social tools and addictive nature make it a textbook case of a social gaming hit. Draw Something draws (ba-dum tish) of Facebook tools for quick games with friends, and settles for random games when they’re around, not unlike the many Scrabble clones available at the moment. There’s telling what’ll happen to the game now that it’s in the clutches hands on Zynga, but odds are pretty good they won’t be messing too much with a winning formula. Incidentally, Draw Something is one of the better arguments for picking up a big-screened phone with lots of input options, like, say, the Samsung Galaxy Note, over certain fruit-themed devices.

AT&T Samsung Infuse 4G update rolling out again via Kies

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:39 PM PDT

A couple of months ago Samsung Infuse 4G owners were thrilled to find out that thet their phones were finally getting updated to Gingerbread, only to immediately be disappointed that it was put on hold from AT&T. According to a tipster, the update is finally back on, though you’ll need to connect to Samsung’s Kies desktop program in order to apply it. We can’t confirm the tip, so if you’ve got an Infuse and you’re hungry for some Gingerbread, download the driver and Kies program and see if you can pull down the update.

The Infuse is a scaled-up version of the Galaxy S for AT&T’s HSPA+ network. It’s pretty impressive as one of the first crop of 4.5-inch phones, even more so when you consider its Super AMOLED panel – though the resolution is just 800×480. In fact just about the only thing we didn’t like in our review back in May of last year was the choice to ship the phone with Android 2.2 Froyo, despite it being about six months out of date at the time. Nearly a year later that’s still the case, except for those who were lucky enough to get Gingerbread before AT&T took it down, citing but not detailing problems for a few users.

As noted above, we can’t verify that the update is working, but we’ve got a report from one lucky Infuse owner and it’s starting to gain a little traction on the web. Try it out – you’ve got nothing to lose but Froyo. The Infuse has the hardware muscle to run Ice Cream Sandwich and Samsung’s posted the source code, so if you’re feeling brave, now might be the time to start searching for some custom ROMs as well.

[Thanks, Ricky!]

Google’s Floor Plan Marker improves indoor Google Maps

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 05:37 PM PDT

Google’s indoor maps feature for Google Maps is a great idea, but implementing it will take more than waiting for Google’s cameramobiles to drive around to your address (with the possible exception of the new Super Wal-Mart Drive-Thru). Business owners have been able to upload floorplans to Google Maps for some time now, but that still doesn’t provide particularly accurate information without a lot of WiFi around. Enter the Floor Plan Marker, Google’s official helper app for indoor Google Maps. You can download it from the Google Play Store right now.

It’s a pretty simple app, all things considered: just load up your location, start the app and walk around. Google will user the sensor data from your phone (including the WiFi connection, accelerometer, magnometer and the GPS radio where applicable) to generate a more accurate map, and automatically upload it to Google Maps. For those few places that already have indoor maps, you’ll be able to see your own location with much greater precision.

Like all of Google’s first party apps, Floor Plan Market is free, so if you frequent locations that use the service there’s no reason not to grab it. Alternately if you’re the own or manager of a larger retail location, it’s never been easier to get your place of business up and running on the service. Get to it. In a few months, there might be quite a bit more demand…

AT&T HTC One X poses for the camera

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 04:24 PM PDT

AT&T will soon be getting their own iteration of the new HTC One X, only it will be coming with a dual-core Qualcomm processor and 4G LTE instead of the Tegra 3 like the international flavor. While we still wait for an official release date from AT&T the device is already starting to make its rounds online and has just posed for the camera — looking exactly like the international model.

While the HTC One X and S are both for sale across Europe we are still waiting stateside for our own. The HTC One S will be arriving on T-Mobile while AT&T gets the 4.7-inch screen packing X instead. We’ve already reviewed both and you can see both of those in detail from the links below. There is a few small differences with the AT&T model and the regular X we reviewed below. The AT&T One X will come with 4G LTE and Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, not the quad-core the UK will enjoy. This doesn’t mean it will be slower either. Check out our Tegra 3 vs Qualcomm S4 benchmark battle for more details.

While our reviews were of the international versions of HTC’s upcoming phones today both the One S and One X have leaked as US models. You can see more on the One S branded with T-Mobile here. We already know just about everything there is to know about these new HTC phones, and they are looking amazing to say the least. While these leaks don’t reveal anything we didn’t already know, it is a sign that they are coming, and coming soon.

Stay tuned for more details from T-Mobile and AT&T on these upcoming superphones.

HTC probably won’t include Beats headphones with future smartphones

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 04:08 PM PDT

If you’re a big fan of Beats headphones, turn down your bass and listen for a minute. Though HTC has been making a lot of its investment and partnership with the Beats by Dr. Dre brand, it looks like they’re going to be scaling back a bit, at least as far as pack-ins are concerned. That means no free Beats headphones with HTC smartphones, at least for the immediate future. HTC told Cnet that its research suggested that the headphones included with phone  like the HTC Sensation XL and Verizon’s Rezound weren’t a significant factor in their buying decisions, making it a fiscally responsible decision to do without them.

HTC invested $300 million into Beats Audio, acquiring 51% of its market value and effectively controlling the smaller company. While Beats still operates independently (and licenses its technology to non-competing manufacturers like Hewlett Packard) HTC has been making the most of the association, incorporating the Beats brand into new smartphones including all three of the HTC One family. Beats amplifiers, equalizers and settings are included in these phones, and the software portions of Beats are being added into older phones like the HTC Vivid as part of their Ice Cream Sandwich/Sense 3.6 update.

None of the One series phones are getting Beats headphones out of the box, though some retailers (including T-Mobile) are using the branding association to try and sell the pricey headphones separately. Beats is doing well enough on its own – the hefty profit margin and celebrity status symbol seems to be making the conglomeration quite enough independent cash. HTC wouldn’t rule out pack-in audio equipment for good, but it’s safe to say that you won’t be seeing any for the next several months at least. Rumors indicate the HTC is planning a subscription music service with MOG Music, but nothing’s come of it yet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) leak suggests $399 price tag

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 03:39 PM PDT

Earlier this week we received more than a couple of reports that the new Galaxy Tab 2, both the 7-inch and 10-inch models from Samsung had been delayed until late April. While things still seem to be on track for a late April release we now have a leaked price too. The folks from Engadget spotted the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 2 at Office Depot of all places, showing a price tag of only $399 for the Ice Cream Sandwich tablet.

The Galaxy Tab 2 is Samsung’s second attempt at a 10-inch tablet and has a few changes over the original. Those include a slightly thinner chassis, and front facing speaker grills similar to a few models we’ve seen in Germany as of late. Under the hood is the same 1280 x 800 resolution screen and 1.0 GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, so no quad-core here but still plenty fast.

The page has since been pulled, but the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 was spotted at Office Depot’s online store for only $399. A sign that Samsung might finally be realizing they’ve been asking a bit too much for their tablets. After a second look you’ll quickly notice that is for the 8GB model, and sadly the 16GB will probably still be $449. Most likely they’ll also offer a 32GB model priced around $499, which seems high given the price of better tablets like the Transformer Prime.

The Tab 2 has already cleared the FCC, including once with AT&T bands and should be hitting stores in the US soon. Once Samsung makes any official announcements we’ll be sure to update with all the details.

Pantech Crossover gets a Gingerbread update

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 03:33 PM PDT

Pantech’s first Android phone on AT&T launched almost a year ago, running 2.2 Froyo – which was already six months out of date at the time. Today Pantech introduced a Gingerbread update for the QWERTY phone, making several people who had probably given up hope of ever seeing a newer version of Android very happy. Well, moderately happy, anyway – it’s not Ice Cream Sandwich after all. The standard bugfixes are present, along with a few new features.

These include support for SIP VOIP, native video chat in Gtalk, and a download manager. Naturally the user interface has been updated with Gingerbread elements, but Pantech is still insisting upon its own Android skin. Interestingly, Pantech isn’t sending out the update over the air as usual, but is sending it out via a PC update application. This is becoming something of a trend – Sony’s decided that all of its promised Android updates will need a computer to apply them.

The Crossover’s 600mhz processor and 512MB of RAM should be enough to run Gingerbread, just don’t expect it to be a seped demon. But depending on how well the software’s implemented, slightly better performance can certainly be hoped for. Oh, and if you’re waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich… don’t. Froyo was the last frozen treat this little guy’s ever going to see.

Instagram update adds Android tablet support and more bug fixes

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 03:18 PM PDT

The team behind Instagram isn’t messing around. Today they’ve just issued yet another update for the Android version of the popular social photography app bringing some more features, changes, and improvements. The update just landed about an hour ago and one of the main new features is tablet support.

The update brings support for more than just smartphones. Now Android tablets and WiFi devices like the Galaxy Player can all access and enjoy Instagram. While most probably don’t take too many photos out in the world with their large 10-inch tablets, it’s nice to have the option. That isn’t all either. They also added the option to move the app to the SD card for those low on storage, or running older devices.

Currently it appears that Instagram on tablets might only work in portrait mode, not landscape. I fired it up on both the Transformer Prime and my 7.7″ Galaxy Tab and both only worked in Portrait mode, so hopefully they fix that. As usual the update claims addition bug fixes, performance updates, and a smoother experience. The update is available right now at the Google Play Store and if you want to know what this Instagram thing is all about, hit the links below for all of our coverage and a review.

T-Mobile’s HTC One S benchmarked on camera

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 02:56 PM PDT

The HTC One series is all the rage at the moment in the Android world, and the T-Mobile’s getting the exclusive American version of the One S, the middle child with its own set of charms. We’ve already given the One S a full review and a thorough run down as far as benchmarks go, but TmoNews has a few photos of T-Mobile’s version in the wild. It’s rumored to be coming April 22nd, so a few devices are bound to be in manager’s hands at the moment – looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer.

In the standard Quadrant benchmark, T-Mobile’s version of the One S gets a score of 4729. That’s way, way above the typical Android smartphone, but curiously it’s also about 10% below the results we got when testing the international version of the One S. Interestingly, the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor in both One S models outscored the Nvidia Tegra 3 in the One X by a considerable margin, despite the former being dual-core and the latter being quad-core. Quadrant probably isn’t optimized for multi-core tests, but even so, it’s a surprising revelation.

Other details noted by TmoNews include the fact that Magenta’s version of the HTC One S will be a decidedly blue hue, as opposed to the red-on-black international version. The black phone will be available some time after the April launch. Beats headphones won’t be included in the package (though Beats audio processing is loaded onto the system) but will be offered at retail, like some of the European sellers were promoting. Hopefully there’s just a couple of weeks left, T-Mobile customers – you excited?

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Mugen Power 3900 mAh extended battery [Hands-on]

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 02:09 PM PDT

So you have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus with 4G LTE and a huge 4.65″ display and you’d love some longer battery life right? Say hello to Mugen Power and their 3900 mAh extended battery and door for the Verizon Gnex. Just arriving on our doorstep we’ve decided to give it a test and see if we can make it through a good part of the weekend from a single charge. Read on past the break for our hands-on video and pictures.

Yes you read that right, this battery is 3900 mAh — giving you over two times the battery life of the stock 1750 mAh battery provided by Samsung. Being a little thicker than most, Mugen has provided us with a replacement battery cover with a nice soft touch matte back and hey, look at that, it even has a kickstand. I quickly tossed the battery into my Galaxy Nexus and threw it on the charger. I’ve already done a battery cycle and will charge it fully again before testing it all weekend.

Mugen Power Verizon Galaxy Nexus 3900 mAh battery unboxing

For roughly $98 dollars the build quality and kickstand feels a little cheap but if this thing will truly make my Galaxy Nexus last around 2.3 times longer, I’m all game. Obviously a lot goes into testing a battery and everyone’s usage patterns vary, but I’ll be testing it against my own use as I’ve taken plenty of screenshots throughout the past few months.

Mugen suggests you charge it past 100% and leave it plugged in a good 8 hours total the first 3-4 times you charge it up, to get the most of the battery’s capabilities. At first glance the kickstand doesn’t sit completely flush so it wobbles a tiny bit while attempting to lay flat on a table, but we’ll break down the build quality, price, and overall benefits in our full review early next week.

Enjoy the pictures below, head to Mugen Power to get your own if you’re already interested, and stay tuned for more info coming soon.

Facebook Messenger updated with ICS support and conversation tweaks

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 12:10 PM PDT

In case you don’t want to use the often buggy and slow Facebook app for Android, they’ve also released another app called Facebook Messenger. While it received big attention when first released I’ve not seen much since then, but Facebook has just updated the app and it has a bunch of improvements and a better, easier to use interface.

As you can see from the screenshots above they’ve added tons to the “what’s new” tab. Bringing many new features to the application to help things be quicker and easier. Something the regular Facebook app needs dearly. While they’ve not completely went the Ice Cream Sandwich user interface way, they are making some progress. You can see the design UI hints from the middle screenshot shown above.

Overall the new interface hasn’t changed too much. The graphics are crisper, and things look better on Ice Cream Sandwich devices such as the Galaxy Nexus. One big change is the faster shortcuts for starting Facebook conversations. You can instantly start a convo with the icon up top, and group conversations are simple as you just hit the + and add who you’d like to chat with.

As usual, Facebook lists performance and battery life improvements, as well as bug fixes so things should be smoother and more stable for those that use Facebook Messenger. Get the new app from the link below and enjoy chatting with those friends and family. Don’t forget to like and follow us at /Android Community.

Max Payne Mobile hits Android April 26th

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 11:17 AM PDT

When Grand Theft Auto III landed on Android phones and tablets it became an instant classic for those devices it supported. The developers behind the smash hit, Rockstar Games, recently announced they’d be bringing another awesome shooter title to Android — Max Payne. Today we’ve just learned additional details including the release date.

Back in February we reported Max Payne Mobile was coming soon, but now according to Vox Games the release date is set for April 26th on Android and a few weeks earlier for iOS. Just like GTAIII, Max Payne will feature all of the original levels, only they’ve been tweaked for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, but the graphics still look excellent.

If you’re a fan of the game this will surely be a must buy, if you aren’t familiar with Max Payne it’s a classic shooter style game that is a little over a decade old, but still extremely popular. Playing a NYC cop that goes on a bender for revenge after losing his family. I wont give away all the details but this should be an epic shooter for Android. No exact pricing was detailed but we can expect it to be similarly priced to the popular GTA III, around the $4.99 price range.

Additionally Max Payne’s third installment will be available for Xbox and PS3 in May.
