Toshiba Thrive Android 4.0 ICS update gets delayed – coming this fall

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 10:15 AM PDT

Well it looks like Toshiba has some rather bad news this morning regarding their Thrive tablets. Announcing that the Toshiba Thrive and Thrive 7-inch tablets won’t be receiving the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this month as originally reported, and instead will be waiting until sometime this fall.

The image above says it all. Andy staring at the chunky and now delayed Thrive with disappointment. Toshiba’s Thrive might not be the best tablet around but it had great specs, and an even better price. Between the multiple sales and bargain bin sightings I’m sure it has many owners, that are now left waiting even long for the update.

The Thrive was late to update with Honeycomb builds and back in late February Toshiba confirmed ICS would arrive in June. Now that June is almost over it appears that today they’ve delayed their plans until “early this fall” as reported by Phandroid. Early fall was the only time frame that was given so we’ll report back once we hear anything closer to an actual date from the folks of Toshiba.

Verizon confirms DROID RAZR Android 4.0 ICS update coming today

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 09:37 AM PDT

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the very popular DROID RAZR and brother the RAZR MAXX is here. This is finally official too. Verizon this morning has confirmed the update both online, and in press emails going out. For those who have waited through the leaks, rumors, and missed dates I’m happy to report it’s finally rolling out as of this morning.

The update support documents have been posted on Verizon’s support page as usual, which means the update is coming soon but Verizon themselves said this morning the update is rolling out today, June 22nd, to the entire DROID RAZR family. Motorola delayed ICS for the RAZR in Australia but it is rolling out and available now here in the US on Verizon.

Earlier this week the build was in beta, but now it is available for everyone and users should be getting the update over the air on their devices soon. As usual you can manually go into settings and check for updates if you’d like to pull the update and enjoy ICS right now. Along with all the features of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich RAZR owners can enjoy a new unlock screen, face unlock for added security, and Verizon even have announced this update makes both RAZR’s the first 4G LTE devices to be global ready. Verizon confirmed many phones would soon be global ready and today the RAZR is the first to have the option.

Being global ready the RAZR’s will be able to have voice and data service in more than 220 countries, along with an international plan of course. For even more details about ICS hit the source link below. It’s about time this finally arrives. Have you already received the update and if so, how is it?

AT&T confirms Galaxy S III pre-orders should arrive by June 25

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 04:16 PM PDT

Samsung’s much anticipated Galaxy S III flagship smartphone is finally arriving here in the US. Sadly the launch and initial push isn’t as simultaneous as they had hoped. After multiple reports from almost all carriers came out stating "manufacturer supply constraints" including AT&T, today they’ve confirmed many should be arriving today, and more on June 25th.

Now first things first you’ll want to check out our Galaxy S III Review! Then you’ll want to run in and buy one wherever possible. Yesterday we reported AT&T was delaying the device for a week til the 28th but it looks like that is only half true. You could try your nearest store, but that is doubtful.

For those who pre-ordered the AT&T Galaxy S III weeks ago most of you should be receiving it today or tomorrow, and some will be arriving on the 25th according to AT&T and The Verge. AT&T also expects all orders to be fulfilled within 10 business days. We’ve waited through months and months of leaks, a few more days won’t kill you — but it certainly is a bummer.

For those considering Verizon it looks like they’ve pushed it back a day again too. Originally it was shipping for arrival on the 9th, then was delayed til the 10th, and now reports are hitting out inbox of the 11th for Verizon’s 4G LTE model. Either way over the next few weeks everyone who wants one should have it. Let us know if you get a shiny new SGSIII in the mail, and if you like it. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Google Play Store now allowing developers to reply to user reviews

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 03:31 PM PDT

Today we have some great news from Google to share with both developers and users in general. Google has now decided to let developers reply directly to users comments and reviews in the Google Play Store. So when that app is amazing and you say so, they can thank you — or answer complaints. Previously Play Store reviews were a one-way conversation, but not anymore.

Google has implemented this into the developer console today for special hand-picked devs, and if you’re one you’ll have a “Top Developer Badge” letting you know. This has “added the ability for developers to respond to reviews from the Google Play Android Developer Console. Developers can gather additional information, provide guidance, and — perhaps most importantly — let users know when their feature requests have been implemented.”

This one-way conversation has been frustrating for users for a long time trying to get support for games and apps, although Google’s always had links to head to developer sites or email them directly — this just makes it more personal. Another good part here is when a developer replies to a user, he’ll be notified via email and will know when he’s received help, new features requests, and more as they mention above. Hopefully this doesn’t get out of hand because we’ve all seen those worthless comments from people mad about things that are out of the developers hands, so this could become a bit of a yelling match.

I’m extremely glad to see this finally becoming a part of Android and the Play Store. Google concluded by saying the system will be offered to a wider group of developers “in the future.”

ZTE Grand X LTE (T82) hands-on

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:51 PM PDT

Today we are getting a quick look at the brand new ZTE Grand X LTE smartphone running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What we have here a device similar to the recently announced Mimosa X, and it runs on the new Qualcomm processor with LTE in a single chip, one of the first of its kind. Check out our hands-on below.

Most likely this phone will never make it stateside, but this is what we can look forward to from ZTE in the future. Showing off their new phones at the CommunicAsia event in Singapore. The Grand X is a pretty mid-range phone, but is a good step for both ZTE and Qualcomm to bring powerful devices with 4G LTE to the streets.

The ZTE Grand X LTE rocks the Qualcomm all-in-one and is paired with pretty decent to mid-range specs. They’ve equipped it with a 4.3-inch qHD 540 x 960 display, Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8 megapixel shooter with 720p video as well as a decent 1,900 mAh battery. The device feels extremely lightweight and ergonomic, but is wrapped in a Samsung like plastic shell. It isn’t the thinnest smartphone around but is well build, performs smoothly, and seems to be quite nice.

More details, pictures, and spec sheet are available from the gallery of images below. Again we’ll probably never see this phone in the US, but hopefully we’ll see similar products from ZTE soon.

Galaxy S II on AT&T getting upgrade to Android 4.0 ICS

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:58 PM PDT

More Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update news is appearing this afternoon. While all the hype as of late has been about the Galaxy S III, it’s older smaller brother the Galaxy S II is finally getting Android 4.0 ICS over on AT&T. They have two models, and this is the standard 4.3-inch original SGSII, not the Skyrocket. More details below.

This was leaked about two months ago but today it’s official. Like the T-Mobile version however, this update appears to only be available via software using a PC and Samsung Kies (download). AT&T will not be pushing the update over the air to devices so users will be required to manually update to Ice Cream Sandwich should you choose to — which AT&T is calling an optional update.

If you have the original Galaxy S II on AT&T you’ll want to install Kies from the link above, grab a USB cord and update to the latest and greatest version of Android. Everything should remain the same, data and contacts should be in tact, but as always I’d backup or save anything important just to be safe. Drop us a comment below and let us know how it goes.

Asphalt 7: Heat official trailer released, arrives on Android June 25

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:05 PM PDT

The best racing game for Android is about to get even better. Today the folks from Gameloft have finally released the official gameplay trailer for Asphalt 7: Heat — and it looks awesome. We’ve seen a few screenshots and video from E3, but now it’s finally available for iOS and will hit Android on the 25th.

It is a shame they can’t release it for both platforms at the same time (just like the video says) but they haven’t. Android will be waiting until June 25th to enjoy the brand new latest installment of this awesome racing game. I’m wondering what in the world those 4 days will really do for Gameloft — playing favorites maybe? Just release it at the same time! For now you can enjoy the official trailer below while we wait a few more days.

Asphalt 7 features 60 fully licensed and official cars from Lamborghini, Audi, Aston Martin and many many others – they even have a DeLorean. How awesome is that? The game also features 15 leagues with over 150 races for players, and multiplayer. I loved 6 and can’t wait to give this latest release a try. It should hit for $0.99 in the Play Store come Monday the 25th.

Google Play Store reportedly outs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 12:23 PM PDT

The topic of what the next version of Android will be has been heavily discussed since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was released, and before. Today however some new rumors and screenshots have appeared that supposedly confirm Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be the next iteration of Android. We’ll probably know for sure come next week at Google IO but lets look at the details.

I’ve tried this same thing more than a few times without any luck, but the folks from Droid-Life went to purchase the Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play Store and upon checkout the phone was titled as the “Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ – The latest smartphone from Google, soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jelly…” Pretty interesting right? I’m not getting the same result and that could easily, easily be faked but it sounds pretty legit. We’ll see.

During checkout the thumbnail for the device shows the image (blown up) shown above. Obviously with a different background wallpaper and launcher changes with the frosted Google Search widget — just like we saw in Google’s official IO 2012 app yesterday. Both of those are different from the current version available today. It looks like we’ll probably be seeing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the rumored Nexus 7-inch tablet at Google IO, followed by the Galaxy Nexus with 4.1 immediately or soon thereafter for sale in the Play Store.

Did you get the same results when you add the Nexus to your cart?

Android Developer site gets a beautiful redesign in time for Google IO

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 11:25 AM PDT

Google IO is literally around the corner where we’ll be learning all sorts of Android deets. Hopefully seeing the Nexus Tablet and if we’re lucky — Project Glass. Just in time for Google IO (since it’s all about developers) the Android Developer’s site has been completely redesigned and it looks awesome. Oh, and is that a Nexus tablet I see next to the Galaxy Nexus? Let those rumors start in 3,2,1..

The team from Android Developers have posted a quick update over on Google+, sharing the information about the redesigned site just in time for Google’s biggest developer event, and I’m loving the fact they even added some of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich design elements to the website. See the top right?

They take this moment to share a few details stating that they took this opportunity to “provide a more streamlined, simplified, and focused experience.” And that as developers they have a job to “Design, develop, and distribute” and they’ve done that with the new site. I’m digging the look, and will surely dig anything they throw our way at Google IO next week too. We’ll be there live so stay tuned right here to Android Community for all the news, and they’ll also live stream the sessions for those interested. Who’s excited for what we’ll see next week?
