Nexus 7 gets the iFixit teardown treatment

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:27 AM PDT

If you’re the type that love to see the insides of your device yet don’t dare do the deed yourself, iFixit has you covered. In their usual fashion they’ve cracked open the brand new Google Nexus 7 Tablet to reveal everything under the hood. Showing us that this clean design also has clean innards — and a huge battery. More pictures provided below.

The Nexus 7 is filled with more than green Android goo and magic dust, it rocks a large battery, dual drivers for the speakers, and a decent 7-inch IPS panel for your viewing pleasure. In case the extremely depressing incident happens and you break your Nexus 7 (gasps) or you just enjoy toying around with everything you’ll want to head to iFixit.com to get started.

While ASUS went on the record saying it wasn’t easy to make this device so thin, yet powerful, and cheap it appears they managed to do an excellent job and scored a 7/10 rating from iFitit. Everything is rather simple under the hood and neatly put together with a decent amount of perfection. Find out more from their link above, as well as our review below.

HTC One V available now from US Cellular for $129

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 11:05 AM PDT

We have good news today for those on US Cellular. As of right now you can now get HTC’s latest and greatest budget smartphone from your local USCC — the HTC One V. Announced earlier this year along with the HTC One X and One S the V is the smallest of the three, but still packs a great mid-range punch. More details from US Cellular after the break.

US Cellular is offering this Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Beats Audio rocking, 5 megapixel camera packing device all for just $129. The HTC One V is very pocketable as it only has a 3.7-inch display, but still packs enough power to be a great phone. Running on a Qualcomm 1.0 GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM it might not be a powerhouse, but should be plenty for most users needs.

The video above should offer you additional details, or you might want to read over our HTC One V Review. US Cellular has confirmed the device is available starting today online, and will be in retail stores on July 6th starting at $129 after a $100 mail-in-rebate. For additional details or to order yours today head to USCellular.com and get one now.

HBO GO updated with Android tablet support

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 10:46 AM PDT

The long-awaited update for HBO GO bringing Android tablet support has finally arrived late last night. When HBO updated their app last month with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich support, yet not tablet support many were surprised and a bit let down. HBO later confirmed a tablet version was coming soon and now it’s finally here. Check out the screenshots and video streaming quality below.

Back in May HBO claimed the update would arrive early summer, and I’m happy to announce they’ve stuck to that and released it as of last night for all Android tablets running “up to” Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or above. This means all those still on Honeycomb can also enjoy HBO GO, unless they meant only ICS devices, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I’ve gone ahead and fired up HBO GO on my Transformer Prime running ICS and so far everything is excellent. The sign-in screen can be a bit clunky but once you’re in and all set up everything is a breeze. HBO might not offer the same amount of options as Netflix but I’ll tell you one thing, their streaming certainly is better and higher quality — not to mention all those series like The Newsroom, True Blood, Bill Maher and many more.

I’m extremely excited to see that HBO has finally updated with tablet support, although sadly it doesn’t appear to be compatible with Jelly Bean on my Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus. Hopefully they fix that soon. Check out the screenshots of video playback and more from my gallery below, then hit the link to get HBO GO for your tablet today.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 getting ICS update in Germany

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 09:42 AM PDT

Last month we reported that Samsung was prepared to start pushing updates to almost all of their tablets in the Galaxy Tab family to Android version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. While the US is still waiting it looks like one of the first up is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7.7 over in Germany and Austria.

Samsung stated that they’d start pushing the software updates out to multiple tablets in the month of July, and now just a few days deep we are seeing the first one. This is good news and hopefully will continue on to other parts of Europe, and the world. Multiple users are reporting the update to Android 4.0.4 ICS has arrived for their 7.7′s and they are already enjoying it.

Sadly the update probably won’t be coming that quick for the Verizon model as they are usually last on the list, but you never know. Reports are confirming the update is arriving over the air (OTA) as well as being available on Samsung Kies. If you have a Samsung tablet it would be a pretty good idea to start checking Kies every few days this month, and we’ll be sure to update as we hear more details.

If you’ve received the update we’d love to hear your thoughts on performance in the comments below.

Melted Android Jelly Bean statue spills the beans

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 03:48 AM PDT

One of the things that many Android fans get a kick out of with each new version of Android that is announced are the statues that sit on the lawn at Google HQ. One of my favorite of those statues was the new one recently added for Android Jelly Bean. If you somehow missed that statue, it had the typical green Android arms and legs with a clear body.

That clear body was stuffed with gigantic jelly beans. Apparently, the clear body couldn’t stand the heat and melted under the solar barrage. They head of the clear Android statue then popped off, spilling some of the gigantic jelly beans inside. Google’s Dan Morrill says that he believes someone made off with one of the jelly beans.

I wonder how Google made the jelly bean theft assumption, perhaps they counted them. I suspect if that rogue jelly bean made it into unauthorized hands; it will turn up on eBay eventually. Morrill says that the designer of the statue is working on a fix. He also asks people not steal the jelly beans.

Dead Trigger Zombie FPS hits Android tomorrow for $0.99

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:35 PM PDT

Early last month we shared a few details about an exciting upcoming Android game called Dead Trigger. This first person arcade-style zombie shooter was set to arrive today in the Google Play Store, but we are now hearing it is “expected” to launch tomorrow for only $0.99 from MadFinger Games.

MadFinger Games are the developers behind one of the best Android games to date — Shadowgun. Between partnering with NVIDIA for Tegra 2 and with Dead Trigger Tegra 3 support, this game should be amazing. Blasting hoards of enemy zombies as they take over the city. The wait is almost over so here’s the teaser trailer:

The graphics and gameplay are awesome, especially coming from MadFinger, and you can expect them to be even better running on NVIDIA Tegra 3 powered devices. We can expect a THD version to arrive on the NVIDIA Tegra Zone too once the game launches worldwide. Playing this on the Transformer Prime or my shiny new Nexus 7 should be a blast.

You can kill, or be eaten by zombies in this epic looking arcade-style shooter. It was supposed to launch today but expect it to arrive tomorrow in the Play Store for all. We’ll be sure and update once we hear more or when it launches. Expect a full review coming soon too.

HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE Unboxing

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Verizon and HTC finally announced the DROID Incredible 4G LTE this morning, stating it will be available nationwide on July 5th. Shortly after our review unit arrived and we’ve quickly unboxed it and took it through a few paces for you all to enjoy. This isn’t our first hands-on with the Incredible, but is worth a quick look.

Below we have several pictures as well as a short unboxing and initial hands-on with the retail unit. We say retail because we’ve handled the phone more than a few times in the past. It was first shown off at CTIA 2012 in New Orleans, but this is the full retail unit that will be available to all come Thursday. So far we are enjoying the overall package. It’s a bit small from what we are used to as of late, but should be very pocketable.

P1090702 P1090697 P1090704

Verizon didn’t get an HTC “One” branded phone like the One S for T-Mobile or the One X for AT&T, but this is as close as you’ll be getting for a while from the folks at big red. The DROID Incredible 4G LTE is everything we expected it to be. Which is a great high-end phone in a slightly smaller mid-range 4.0-inch package. It still manages to come with top notch specs including the same 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor as the One S, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and that impressive 8 megapixel camera on the back. The D-INC rocks Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4 just like the other recent HTC phones, and performance was swift and steadily improved over Sense 3.6 we’ve seen in the past.

We’ve had our hands on this more than a few times, and now know it will be available come Thursday, July 5th. If there is anything you’d like to see or know about the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE for when we post our full review drop us a comment or two below. Otherwise go pick this up for $149 (after $50 MIR) later this week.

Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 budget ICS tablet Hands-on

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 12:59 PM PDT

Lenovo is back this month with another Android tablet, only this time is aiming for a different crowd with a budget friendly price and new size. Shaped and spec’d very similar to the iPad 2 we have the Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 here to check out. Coming with a 9.7-inch 4:3 aspect ratio screen and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. See if it’s worth it after the break.

Yup, the Lenovo S2109 runs on the same 1024 x 768 IPS display used on the iPad 2 — coming in at 9.7-inches for a nice 4:3 aspect ratio change of pace. Under the hood gets you a 1.0 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8 or 16GB of storage. They’ve done away with the rear camera and instead equipped it only with a 1.3 front shooter capable of 720p video. The entire design looks strikingly similar to the iPad and without the Lenovo logo and uni-body plastic shell you’d hardly tell a difference. Then you boot up Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and know you’re in heaven. Here’s our quick video:

One plus here with Lenovo’s latest tablet — unlike their recent slates — is they’ve opted for completely vanilla Android 4.0 ICS. No custom launcher or weird square widgets front and center like the Honeycomb tablets. So far the performance has been pretty swift, although the screen resolution is the weakest link no doubt. Other than the screen everything else about this tablet is pretty nice.

P1090672 P1090680 P1090674

Lenovo has stepped up their build quality, they’ve added SRS quad-stereo surround sound that works amazing, and the rounded uni-body design is quite pleasing in the hand. It looks aluminum but indeed is a hard plastic. The power and volume buttons have a lot of feedback and are a bit too squishy and sometimes I have to try more than once but I can’t complain as I’ve only had it a day.

Offering both 16GB of storage at a great price, a large 6,000 mAh battery, micro-SD support for extra storage and HDMI-out makes this a pretty compelling device for only $311. Yup Lenovo is pricing this under the iPad 2 at just $349 for the 8GB model, and $399 for the 16GB but this weekend only they are on sale starting at $311 for the 4th of July. We’ll continue to test the performance, screen, and battery life over the course of the week so stay tuned for a full review on this decent budget friendly sleek and lightweight Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet.
