Live Nation launches concert ticket app for Android

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 11:27 AM PDT

Live Nation, the world's leading live entertainment company has finally launched their mobile app for Android. After the iOS version was released well over 18 months ago they’ve finally managed to make their way to the biggest and best mobile OS on the planet. You’ll now have full access to Live Nation and Ticketmaster concert information and purchases right at your fingertips.

If you want to check out the latest Tool concert (yes please!) or sadly see someone like Nicki Minaj or Justin Bieber the Live Nation Android app has you covered. Live Nation bought out Ticketmaster back in 2010 and has the biggest offering of concert tickets available in the US. Whether you want to see a big show, or small independent local shows this is the best way to find and purchase them while on-the-go.

The app gives you more than just browsing and buying concert tickets too. It offers search and discover, as well as alerts on pre-sales, on-sale deals, and last minute tickets. They’ll even be offering exclusive app-only pre-sales for those early birds. You can get alerts and order your tickets all inside their new Android app. Live Nation even uses your GPS coordinates to find local shows — how convenient.

With more than 3 million iOS downloads this will surely be a big hit for Android smartphones. Get all your concert details from the new Live Nations Android app available now in the Play Store by clicking here.

UFC Champion George St-Pierre unboxes the Nexus 7 – with Ninjas

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Who’s ready for the next adventurous unboxing video brought to you by Google and Patrick Boivin? This is a Google tradition called Ninja unboxing just like all their previous Nexus devices (linked to below), and today they’ve brought out the big guns with UFC’s Champion fighter GSP. Check out the impressive video after the break.

The Ninjas are back to unbox another Nexus device only this time they’re life-sized and get beat out by the one and only George St-Pierre. If you’ve seen any of their previous videos you’ll know they all use stop-motion clay figures animated by Patrick Boivin, but tossing that in with a real life Mixed Martial Arts professional is awesome. I’ll stop talking and let you enjoy the video below:

The UFC Welterweight champion couldn’t wait to unbox his shiny new Google Nexus 7 tablet running on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, but then some trash talking ninjas tried to ruin the party and were quickly put in their place. If you noticed “Dr. Paul’s” apartment you’ll see Jelly Beans, little Android figurines and all sorts of Android goodness spread throughout — a true fan indeed.

Google doesn’t reveal when the tablet will start shipping to those who pre-ordered, but we can expect it sometime in the next week or two. We do however know when GSP will be in the Octagon again, and that is November 17th 2012 for UFC 154 against Carlos Condit — and surely GSP will win that battle just like he always does. We hope you enjoyed the video!

Nexus 7 costs $152 to manufacture according to teardown report

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 10:11 AM PDT

A new teardown report of ASUS and Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet has been released that conflicts with previous reports. After announcing the tablet Google was quoted saying they were making no profit from the tablet, but that wasn’t entirely accurate. Last week we reported the tablet cost around $184 to manufacture but new reports today claim it’s much less.

According to AllThingsD, who spoke with teardown specialists iSuppli the Nexus 7 costs a little under $152 for Google and ASUS to manufacture and produce. That is for their 8GB model priced at $199. This means after the $25 free gift card to the Play Store, shipping, advertising and logistics they probably were being honest in saying they’ll pull zero profit from the slate.

The 16GB model however is their bread and “butter” where it will be purely profit. Costing $249 for buyers yet only costs Google an additional $7 to add in another 8GB memory module, making the other $50+ pure profit for the folks at Google and ASUS. iSuppli even mentions the Nexus 7 costs only $18 more than the Kindle Fire to produce. What does that $18 get you? A camera, Tegra 3 quad-core processor, and a better display — all things I’m sure the Kindle could have managed.

For many these teardown and cost estimations don’t matter, but it’s interesting to see the full breakdown and cost analysis. Did you buy the Nexus 7 and if so did you get the 8GB or 16GB?

T-Mobile unveils new myTouch and myTouch Q

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:42 AM PDT

T-Mobile has announced two new smartphones that will be available on August 8. The two devices are the T-Mobile myTouch and the T-Mobile myTouch Q. Both smartphones have a new version of the Genius Button and feature an easy-to-use Setup Wizard. Both smartphones feature similar specifications.

HTC to offer new Android tablet in the UK

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:27 AM PDT

If you’re a HTC fan living in the UK, you’re probably familiar with the fact that HTC hasn’t offered a new tablet since last May. The last tablet to hit UK stores from HTC was the Flyer. The tablet didn’t do all that well on the market, mostly due to the price of £600 when it launched. The tablet did have some nice features to set it apart from the pack, including a higher resolution screen than most seven-inch tablets and a digital pen.

HTC has confirmed that it’s working on another tablet will make its way to the UK market according to PCadvisor. HTC offered no details on the tablet other than promising that it would have a unique selling point. What that unique selling point is remains to be seen. We assume the tablet would run Android 4.1 for the operating system.

With most consumers going for cheap Android tablets along the lines of the Google Nexus 7, I suspect it will be a lower end entry-level tablet. It HTC wanted to be successful it needs to have decent hardware and that unique selling point needs to be a cheap price.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rolling out to Galaxy Nexus today

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 04:37 PM PDT

Google themselves have just announced that Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean is rolling out for the international (HPSA+) Samsung Galaxy Nexus starting today. Right now the update is rolling out as we speak and as long as you don’t have the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, you can enjoy the latest and greatest from Google.

The update has already arrived on our Nexus 7 tablet a matter of minutes ago, but we are still waiting for it to arrive on our Google IO edition Galaxy Nexus phones. While we wait you can rest assured that Google themselves announced the update was rolling out today only a few minutes ago over on Google+.

This should also be arriving for all the Galaxy Nexus phones sold through the Google Play store over the past month or so, not just the original international model. Google mentions next on the list is “all Galaxy Nexus devices” so hopefully Verizon is up next. Then the Nexus S followed by the Motorola XOOM. We’ll be sure to update once we hear any additional details but for now you should probably head to settings > about phone > check for updates and enjoy the awesome new Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with Google Now. For more information about both check out our review and videos below, or head to our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Portal.

Nexus 7 updated to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 04:13 PM PDT

Google’s brand new Nexus 7 tablet just received its first over the air software update. The update is arriving now for those who luckily already have the tablet and brings along Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. The update is rather small but brings the Nexus 7 to the same version of Android Google pushed to AOSP last night.

Right now the Nexus 7 is only in the lucky few hands of those who attended Google IO, so this won’t matter for the masses but it’s nice to know Google’s going to be updating so quick. The OTA update just arrived on my own tablet just a few moments ago and was 12 MB in size, so rather small.

So far it appears to only bring us to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, and the search features seem to all still be present. I was thinking Google might have removed some of those search features that “infringe” on Apple’s lame patents, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. We’ll continue to look for any changes but wanted to share the news. It looks like once the Nexus 7 starts arriving for the public you’ll all be greeted with this update out of the box. Stay tuned!

Twitter for Android update released, expanded Tweets added

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 03:09 PM PDT

An update to the official Twitter app has been delivered on Android, and along with it comes a handful of cool new features no Twitter user should be without. By far the most exciting addition to the Android Twitter app are expanded tweets, but there’s also an expansion to Twitter’s search autocomplete tool and new push notifications that you might like to know about. Hit the jump to catch all the details.

First and foremost, let’s start off with the option to expand Tweets. They’ll still be limited to 140 characters unfortunately, but now when you’re Tweeting a link to an article or video, you’ll be sending additional media along with it. For instance, tapping a link to an article will show a summary of that piece, whereas tapping a link to an online store will allow you view at some of the images on the product page.

While the expanded Tweets update may be exciting, there’s more to look forward to after updating your Twitter app. Most Twitter users are probably already familiar with Twitter’s search autocomplete functionality, but now it’s been updated to give you more search results. It isn’t the most amazing thing ever, but added functionality is never a bad thing.

Finally, we come to the addition of push notifications. If you need to know about everything your friends do on Twitter, this addition is for you. Turning the feature on will alert you whenever someone you’re following Tweets or re-Tweets something, and you can opt to receive push notifications for individual users instead of the entire list of people you’re following. This Twitter for Android update is available now, so go download it and check it out!

CyanogenMod updates their status on CM10 Jelly Bean

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:42 PM PDT

The team and folks from CyanogenMod have released a quick status update today confirming what we all already want, and are hoping arrives soon — CyanogenMod 10 and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Last week they briefly mentioned their plans with CM7, CM9, and how they’d move forward but today they’ve cleared all that up.

Basically it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing KANGS, nightly builds, and ROM’s of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean CyanogenMod style. Obviously they didn’t drop us any sort of ETA (those aren’t allowed) but they did detail a few steps that will need to be taken now that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has hit AOSP. Here’s what they had to say:

Repositories for all AOSP projects have been created on our github to alleviate any potential mismatches (branch is ‘jellybean’).

While Jelly Bean won’t require a major rewrite of all the CM features, the source has been re-arranged and re-factored enough that a simple merge isn’t possible. So we will proceed with manual merging (this was to be expected really).

The plan of attack will be to cherry-pick everything from CM9 and fix the merge conflicts and relocations. It's tedious but the only way. Ideally the original patch authors will forward-port their changes, so if you are out there and want to help out, join us in #cyanogenmod -dev.

+ Trebuchet might be messy to rebase onto JB.
+ Theme Engine will be messy.
+ SystemUI stuff will need to be restyled.
+ Lockscreen stuff will need to be restyled.
+ The current UX of Settings is good, no reason to change anything there.

A manifest (Cyanogenmod/android.git) will be going up later this afternoon, so the masses will be able to sync directly from our source at that point as well.

This will be it on the updates (so we can focus on actually working). Next post referencing JB should be when the merge/cherry-pick process is complete.

That is pretty good news. Obviously the changes weren’t just small visual tweaks and things will take time, but it sounds like CM10 will be moving along quite well and rather quickly. For now we can probably expect the team to quietly work away on the code in their dungeons and make everything extra oily and buttery smooth, then release the nightly builds. I’m excited for CM10, who’s with me?

Frontier launches 21.5-inch Android 4.0 ICS tablet in Japan

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:23 PM PDT

Who thinks that 10.1-inch Android tablets are just too small these days? Even Toshiba recently released a new 13-inch Android slate but today we have something even bigger, although we can hardly call this a tablet. The folks from Frontier have just launched their FT103 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich based tablet or “smart display” in China.

We can’t really call this a tablet, since it’s basically smartphone internals added to a huge 21.5-inch capacitive touch display, but I’m going to anyways. The Japanese company Frontier have released this today and for a pretty fair price. This 21.5-inch 1920 x 1200 tablet comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 8GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, and is powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 4428 1.0 GHz processor.

One interesting note is along with multiple full sized USB ports, micro-USB, and micro-HDMI it also has a full size HDMI input. This is why some are calling it a smart display because you can use it as a regular or external PC monitor, then it doubles as your Android tablet should you choose. The device has your usual WiFi, Bluetooth, 1.2 megapixel front webcam, and even micro-SD support for expanded storage. There’s no mention of Google Play Store support or any other details but it sure is interesting. This will be available later this month in Japan for around $440 USD.

Who wants one?

Nexus 7 could hit retail stores this Thursday

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:26 PM PDT

Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet is causing quite a stir from potential buyers. With such an awesome tablet for a low price everyone seems to want one. While earlier today the Play Store changed the “expected ship date” from 3-4 weeks to 1-2 weeks, we are now seeing more than one retail store suggesting it will be available on Thursday.

Last week Staples claimed the device would start shipping between the 12th and 17th of July, and now according to Office Depot the Nexus 7 tablet will be “in stores” and available for purchase Thursday, July 12th. The folks from Droid-Life received this anonymous tip.

Staples is already taking pre-orders just like the Google Play Store has been, and now Office Depot is stating they’ll start accepting pre-orders today (although you can’t order online for now.) They go as far as to say over 341 stores nationwide will receive shipments by the 12th. Pre-orders will also start shipping on the 12th from the Depot, so we can expect in store availability on the same day or coming soon. Hopefully Google ships units to those who pre-ordered from them before they start selling the tablet in stores, or that would just be rude.

While none of these retail store sightings can be completely accurate, it looks like these tablets should start flying off the shelves later this week — or we hope so at least. We’ll be sure to update once we see or hear any further details. Check out our review and past coverage of the Nexus 7 below.

Motorola MotoSmart headed for UK, targeting consumers on a budget

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 12:32 PM PDT

Smartphones are great in pretty much every way, and those who use them quickly find that they can no longer live without them. The only problem is that smartphones can be prohibitively expensive for many consumers (especially if they don’t want to sign a contract). So, what’s a prospective smartphone user on a budget to do? Well, for starters, Motorola would like it if you purchased a MotoSmart phone, which will be arriving in the UK this month.

Billed as “the smartphone for everyone,” the MotoSmart comes with a 3.5-inch display, built in Wi-Fi and GPS, a 3-megapixel camera, and makes use of Android Gingerbread 2.3. It isn’t exactly what you could call a feature-rich phone, but the price is low enough that it will serve as a nice introductory device for those who are delving into the world of smartphones for the first time. The phone will be available through T-Mobile for £99.99 on a pay as you go plan, or for free on a £7 per month, 24 month plan. Motorola says that MotoSmart should be available toward the end of July.

The Motorola MotoSmart doesn’t appear to be heading overseas anytime soon, but given the number of budget-priced smartphones already available in the US, it likely won’t be missed. If the MotoSmart sounds like something you might be interested in, have a look at Motorola’s latest advertisement for it above and see if it truly is for you.

Google IO 2012 videos live – watch all 28 Android Sessions

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 11:43 AM PDT

The end of last month was a very exciting week here in the world of Android. Google’s yearly developer event, Google IO was in full swing. Obviously you know they announced the Nexus 7 tablet, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and a few other goodies but today we have even more for you. Google has released the videos from all the developer sessions for those who missed out.

Google IO sadly only happens once a year (monthly would be awesome) and they only allow a select few thousand in the doors. For the countless developers that weren’t able to go, or missed out due to schedules Google’s now dropped all 28 developer session videos for your viewing pleasure. If you want to learn how to monetize with YouTube, better showcase your Android apps, learn how to make a smooth and stable app and more this is a great start.

Google has nicely added all 28 of the Android specific sessions to one easy place. The full list of all the videos is available at Google IO 2012 — The Android Sessions. All the additional information you’d like is also available from the Android Developers Blog linked to at the bottom of the page. Hit any of the links in the timeline below for our coverage, or just head to our Google IO portal.
