LG Optimus G quad-core pictured in the flesh, TrueHD IPS+ display confirmed

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 10:38 AM PDT

The latest and greatest in smartphones is almost here. Earlier this week we reported on a new device codenamed the LG Optimus G with a quad-core processor, and later Qualcomm confirmed the details. LG’s new powerhouse will feature the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, and that is only the beginning. Today we got our first official look at the phone, as well as more details from LG.

Thanks to the folks at AndroidMX we are seeing the new Optimus G pictured for the first time. Their images confirm the awesome display, as well as the internals with a few screenshots confirming the specs. Those are a 4.7-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display with LG’s brand new TrueHD IPS+ technology. This is said to be 60% brighter than Samsung’s AMOLED, while being more efficient too.

That isn’t all either. They managed some screenshots of the new LG Optimus G running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and can also confirm the 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and the Adreno 320 for stunning graphics and gaming. Oh and did we mention they confirmed the 13 megapixel camera — yea that happened.

Earlier today we also received some more confirmation from LG Korea. They confirmed the retina beating, Samsung topping display they’ll be using, as well as a new battery technology they claim will make the phone up to 60% more efficient. Whether we’ll be getting 60% more battery life is another story though. Either way the details confirmed by LG as well as the leaks from yesterday all makes for a strong showing from LG.

The impressive new next-gen LG Optimus G is headed to the streets internationally in September, with a mid October launch date stateside. Stay tuned for more details as we’ll be seeing it live next week at IFA 2012.

Nexus 7 quad-core overclocked to 2.0 GHz, shatters benchmarks

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 12:42 PM PDT

The Google Nexus 7 and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor just keep pushing the cutting edge. When we say cutting edge — we mean faster than anything else available. Over at XDA they’ve pushed the limits farther than we thought possible, and now have the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core that powers the Nexus 7 running at 2.0 GHz. Check it out below.

Yup, that is an actual screenshot. I just made it pretty. We’ve talked about these types of things in the past. Earlier this month we saw the Nexus 7 overclocked to 1.7 GHz and pass 7000 in Quadrant benchmarks, but this here is an entirely new level topping 8000. This time around however we aren’t running on the popular Trinity (derkenel) many know and love. Instead this awesome news comes to us thanks to my good pal Simms22, and clemsyn at XDA Developers.

Clemsyn’s very special and experimental test kernel (as in not for the public) has managed to push the limits to 2.0 Ghz on this quad-core chip. Many are able to enjoy his latest and greatest at 1.8 GHz, but 2.0 is causing a few issues so for now this is only an internal build. Hopefully once these awesome developers continue to push the limits we can see an actual release. For now however, this will have to do.

Pretty impressive scores right? That is beating Qualcomm’s unreleased quad-core linked to below. According to Simms the Nexus 7 and Tegra 3 at 2.0 GHz isn’t exactly what we’d call “stable” but he was able to get a few other tests in — including the new and popular RL Benchmark. Since this is such an experimental kernel we won’t be including details or instructions like before, but since we know there’s a few diehard enthusiasts out there we’ll give you a link. If you’d like to follow along with clemsyn and his “Elite Kernel” for some high speed fun you can do so by heading to this XDA thread.
