HTC confirms no ICS for HTC ThunderBolt this month

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 04:15 PM PDT

We have some bad but somewhat expected news for all you Bolt owners this afternoon. After HTC announced multiple times that they would indeed be updating multiple devices to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich during the month of August, Thunderbolt included, sadly that didn’t quite happen. The update won’t be arriving yet and HTC’s issued a statement.

The folks at Droid-Life noticed a comment over on HTC’s Facebook page confirming the details. Basically HTC has stated that “We’re aware we missed the deadline” and “we’re working with Verizon for ICS on the Thunderbolt.” Basically they didn’t share any new details other than yes, it’s not yet available.

HTC updated many of their older devices this past month (and last) to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the HTC ThunderBolt is actually one of the last ones standing that haven’t received the latest and greatest from HTC and Google. Don’t worry though folks, it has leaked multiple times.

After taking a second look at their response pictured above it appears they might be making a poke at Verizon with that one. We all know Big Red is one of the slower carriers when it comes to Android updates (just look at the Galaxy Nexus) so maybe everything is ready to rock from HTC and we are just awaiting Verizon’s approval. Hopefully the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich arrives for the ThunderBolt. For now CM10 will do just fine.

Activision Anthology arrives on Android with 45 classics in tow

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 03:54 PM PDT

Ready for some nostalgia? Hopefully you are, because Activision has just unleashed the Activision Anthology on the Google Play Store. The anthology features 45 classic Activision games, and though the app is free, you’re going to have to shell out cash for most of the titles Activision is touting in this release. That isn’t true for all of the games, however, as just downloading the app nets you Kaboom! for free.

As for the other 44 games – which include Pitfall, River Raid, The Activision Decathalon, Stampede, Pitfall II and Demon Attack – you’ll have to lay down some cash to access those. The rates aren’t too bad, though, with Activision offering bundle packs of 11 games for $2.99 each. You can also purchase the entire collection for the “special limited-time introductory price” of $6.99. There’s no word on when that price will increase, or what it will increase to when it does.

This package comes with a number of bonuses, allowing players to collect digital versions of the game patches Activision was pushing back in the 1980s. The Activision Anthology comes complete with Facebook and Game Center integration, along with support for leaderboards and achievements. There are also a number of different control schemes to pick from, and the original box art and manual for each game are included so you can get a real blast from the past.

All in all, this doesn’t seem like too bad a package, considering the extras Activision has included. It seems pretty reasonably priced as well – $6.99 is not a bad price to pay for 45 games, especially if you grew up playing them and would like to revisit the past every once in a while. The Activision Anthology is available now on the Google Play Store [download] – will you be picking it up?

Amazon launching two 7-inch Fires, no 10-inch tablet

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:56 PM PDT

Amazon is set to announce their new Kindle Fire tablet at an event next week set for September 6th. Many of the rumors floating around are regarding a larger 10-inch version, but new details are claiming the fires won’t be getting any bigger. We say fires because CNET is reporting two 7-inch tablets will be unveiled.

According to reports close to the situation Amazon will be announcing and showing off two 7-inch Kindle Fire tablets. One being very similar to last years model. It appears that last years model will be getting a very similar refresh with a new user interface (possibly Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) with a lower price point, then an improved and more powerful model will also get announced.

The image above, leaked by The Verge shows what we could be expecting and hearing from Amazon soon. That is the same model we already know with a slightly improved UI and software, then behind it is their new and improved model with a front facing camera, video chat capabilities and multiple other new features. Notice the difference in the bezel?

We can’t see Amazon dropping the original all the way down to $149 — but that is certainly a possibility. Then that would leave room for the original to sell, and now popular $199 price point to be met by their new and improved Fire 2 featuring better hardware, cameras, and possibly even a quad-core processor. It’s safe to say Amazon won’t be aiming at the iPad here, and instead will have some tough competition from Google’s own Nexus 7 and the upcoming iPad Mini.

Would you buy a larger Kindle Fire? Or is 7-inches their sweet spot?

Samsung Galaxy Stellar hits Verizon September 6th according to leaks

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:25 PM PDT

We are slowly but surely learning all the details about Samsung’s still unannounced Galaxy Stellar 4G LTE smartphone. The device is headed to Verizon and has leaked more than a few times including the full photo below thanks to Best Buy Mobile. Today a new leak claims it will be available come September 6th from Big Red.

The folks from Engadget managed to get their hands on a leaked document or two that sheds light on Samsung and Verizon’s plans for the smartphone. While both companies are being tight lipped, we now know plenty about the device. It sure isn’t anything top of the line and will make a great mid-range back to school phone — and just in time too.

Previous reports have confirmed the device will launch for just $99 as a budget minded device for first time smartphone buyers, but some details still have us a bit puzzled. For one the earlier leaks hint strongly about getting apps from the Amazon App Store, not Google’s, so that’s a thing we are still interested in hearing more about.

As far as specs this device comes with a 4.0-inch WVGA 480 x 800 resolution display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 3.2 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 front and 4GB of internal storage and Android 4.0 ICS. The device is certainly aimed and priced at first time smartphone buyers and even comes with something Sammy is calling “starter mode” that should help with noobies to the smartphone world.

For just $99 is this smartphone worth the price? We’ll have to wait for all the official details from Verizon and Samsung to truly know.

LG Eclipse 4G LTE (Optimus G) passes through FCC headed to AT&T

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:02 PM PDT

LG’s brand new smartphone that many are calling a superphone has just cleared the FCC en route to AT&T. LG recently announced their brand new next-gen Optimus G quad-core smartphone and now a very similar device is headed to AT&T as the LG Eclipse 4G LTE. It looks like those who passed on the Galaxy S III could have a great device in their hands soon.

Back in May the Eclipse 4G LTE was first spotted as a possible device headed to AT&T, and since then we’ve seen countless leaks and tips suggestion the device is indeed coming soon. Benchmarks confirmed the quad-core processor and 4G LTE aspects for AT&T and this latest FCC filing basically seals the deal.

With both LG and Qualcomm announcing the phone, stating it was headed to the international market in September, then the US in October everything is lining up. AT&T looks to be getting the Eclipse 4G LTE just in time for Halloween. What does this phone entail? a 4.7-inch TrueHD IPS display with a 1280 x 768 resolution display that LG claims is class leading, Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor blazing along at incredible speeds, 2GB of RAM, and a massive 13 megapixel camera. Add all that onto AT&T’s growing 4G LTE network and you have a superphone indeed.

The FCC filing spotted by Engadget, shows the usual 4G LTE bands for AT&T, as well as two next-gen radios (bands 2 and 5) for upcoming spectrum upgrades and transfers as we’ve recently seen. If everything lines up the way it appears AT&T will have a top contender from the folks at LG to announce here sometime shortly. Stay tuned for more details.

Evernote updated with improved performance and Jelly Bean notifications

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:24 PM PDT

The folks handling the development for the popular note taking app Evernote have been busy. They’ve managed to always update the app with the latest and greatest Android features around, and are constantly improving their service. Their most recent update brings an entire new level of notifications to Evernote thanks to Jelly Bean‘s expanded notifications.

Evernote just issued an update to the Play Store last night. The new and improved version doesn’t bring with it tons of changes but for the average user you have some good stuff. They specifically mention a few UI changes, improved performance, faster image uploads, and Notes containing images load faster too.

Now for Jelly Bean. All those users enjoying the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and those awesome expanded notifications this update is also for you. Evernote will now fully take advantage of this feature to the fullest. The image below will give you an idea of what to expect.

Notifications improvement [Jelly Bean only]
- Displays thumbnails and text snippets
- Share and edit the note from the notification
- Groups similar notifications
Improved performance:
- User interface refinements
- Notes containing images load faster
- Faster notebook scrolling
Numerous bug fixes

The new Jelly Bean notifications allow for tons of neat things. For one you can simply and quickly edit Notes right from the pulldown notification, as well as share them with others. The Notification will show text and even image thumbnails, and then group similar notifications and notes together. If you haven’t tried Evernote now would be a good time.
