Verizon launches the Samsung Galaxy Stellar budget smartphone for free

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 10:50 AM PDT

When we last heard about the Samsung Galaxy Stellar we knew it would be a low priced budget friendly smartphone for Verizon, but today they’ve taken the wraps off of the new mid-range smartphone and it’s looking quite good. The Galaxy Stellar will net you Ice Cream Sandwich and 4G LTE all for free with a new contract so check it out.

Yup, you read that right. This might not be the most powerful device from Samsung or Verizon but it offers Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in a decent package and 4G LTE speeds and won’t cost you a penny. The full specs include a low res 4.0-inch WVGA 480 x 800 display, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a few cameras.

It isn’t all free though. The device will run you a new 2-year contract and a $50 mail in rebate so you will be spending a few dollars out of the gate. You’ll also get a 3.2 megapixel rear camera and VGA 1.3 front for video chatting and those lovely self portraits.

The Galaxy Stellar is aimed and new smartphone buyers with a “starter mode” to make usage and navigation easier for newcomers to the smartphone world (because it’s 2012) and they’ve even bundled some of Amazon’s most popular apps with the device. Just like the LG Intuition announced earlier this morning the Samsung Galaxy Stellar will hit Verizon September 6th and will only run you a $50 bill.

Huawei Ascend D1 quad-core smartphone hits the streets September 12

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 10:14 AM PDT

Huawei and their new flagship smartphone is finally ready to grace consumers hands. They’ve teased their upcoming quad-core powered Ascend D1 Quad more than a few times, but starting later this month it will finally be available to consumers. After making a splash at Mobile World Congress then getting delayed — it’s finally seeing the light of day.

Huawei announced the Ascend D Q with their own in-house quad-core 1.5 GHz processor that was topping the benchmark charts. They quickly realized it wasn’t so easy to get production and everything up and running and have suffered multiple delays. We’ve seen plenty of great devices out of Hauwei but this looks to be their new flagship smartphone.

The Huawei Ascend D Quad features their 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and will be running with a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720p IPS HD display. Now nearly 7 months later they’ve finally got the device ready to rock. The new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (or Jelly Bean) capacitive buttons grace the front instead of on-screen, but otherwise it looks great.

Huawei has announced that this new flagship quad-core smartphone will finally be available starting September 12th in China, and will eventually roll it out to other markets in the coming weeks and months. Most likely it won’t make it to any major markets since their production is probably still rather slow on the quad-core processor. The new Ascend D quad will be priced around 2699 Yuan — or $425 USD. Who’s interested in another quad-core smartphone?

LG Intuition officially announced by Verizon – hits stores September 6 for $200

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 09:35 AM PDT

Verizon has finally and officially announced the often rumored LG Optimus Vu with 4G LTE. As you should already know this massive phablet is called the LG Intuition from Verizon and as of today it will be available starting September 6th. We saw these details last week but today Verizon has confirmed all the important bits.

The Verizon Intuition by LG will be available online starting September 6th for $200 after the usual 2-year contract signage, and then will be available nationwide in Verizon Wireless stores starting on the 10th. You won’t be able to walk in and get one quite yet, but the wait shouldn’t be long.

This device is a bit dated before it even hits the streets. Verizon doesn’t offer the Galaxy Note so this is their only plus size BBS (big beautiful smartphone) at the moment — unless they get the Galaxy Note II. Many are hoping that device comes but if not the Intuition will have to take care of your phablet needs for the time being.

This oddly sized and shaped 5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio phone still is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and an 8 megapixel camera so should make plenty of customers happy. It just isn’t quite up to spec compared to the Note II or popular Galaxy S III. Rumors also suggests HTC has a 5-inch 1080p smartphone headed to Verizon but for now the LG Intuition is your best bet. If you are on the fence check out a few of our hands-on below, then head to a store near you on the 10th and check it out yourself.

Samsung Galaxy Note II accessory line up detailed by iLuv

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 03:47 PM PDT

The Galaxy Note II is one of Samsung‘s new flagship devices, and as such, it’s getting accessories up the wazoo. Samsung has already detailed its line up of first party accessories for the device, but third party manufacturers are going to want to get in the action as well. Today iLuv detailed its full roster of Samsung Galaxy Note II accessories, and we have to say that some of them look pretty sleek.

iLuv has a collection of protective cases and S-Pen replacements to offer you, starting with the Pocket Agent. The Pocket Agent is a leather case that can unfold into a stand for the Galaxy Note II, allowing for two different viewing angles should you require a bit of variety. The Pocket Agent is good for keeping your Galaxy Note II protected from scratches and falls when not in use, but if you want a case that protects your device but still allows you to use it, the Gelato Shield might be for you.

As you can see from the image above, the Gelato Shield comes with a clear cover that’s guaranteed not to interfere with use. It protects your device in much the same way as the Pocket Agent – there’s plenty of padding to keep the corners, sides, and back from damage, but the advantage here is that the clear front cover lets you use the Galaxy Note II while keeping the screen safe from scratches at the same time. iLuv is also offering a Glare Free Protection Kit, which is a layer of film you can put over the front screen to provide a degree of protection from scratches.

Finally, we come to iLuv’s ePen and ePen Pro, which propose something of a trade off – you won’t get the same functionality as you would with the S Pen, but they look pretty stylish, and come with the added benefit of being able to stick them in a pocket easily. Some of these accessories are already available on iLuv’s website (such as the ePen and ePen Pro), while the others will likely be launching around the same time as the Galaxy Note II. They’re not too terribly expensive either, as prices range from $12.99 to $44.99. Will you be hitting up iLuv to buy some accessories for your Galaxy Note II?

LG Intuition (Optimus Vu) could hit Verizon September 6th

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 03:01 PM PDT

LG’s own take on the “phablet” known as the LG Optimus Vu has been re-branded and confirmed for Verizon Wireless. Now after countless rumors and leaks suggesting it would arrive for Verizon, this weekend the folks at Engadget received some rather compelling screenshots for a September 6th release date.

For those unaware, the Optimus Vu rocks that odd 5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio display, has an included stylus like the Galaxy Note, and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The specs have been improved to a Qualcomm 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and of course Verizon Wireless 4G LTE speeds.

The image above is another gathered by the source, and confirms that the Intuition will be launching as a web-only special starting this Thursday, September 6th, then will hit all retail stores from Big Red starting on the 10th of the month. The 6th is also the silent rollout of the Samsung Galaxy Stellar 4G LTE if other recent leaks are correct. Previous rumors had the device coming on the 12th but now we aren’t so sure.

We haven’t heard much from Verizon or LG regarding this device but surely it is coming soon. With Verizon these leaks or details can always change on a moments notice so until we hear from the big guys themselves we won’t be holding our breath. Sadly this device comes to the US rather late after being available internationally for a few months already. Samsung just announced their Galaxy Note II that clearly dominates the Intuition in all areas. Hopefully that will also be coming to Verizon but we’ll have to wait and see.

If this LG phablet is something you’re interested in you’ll want to stay tuned for further details.

Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean OTA update leaks again [Download]

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 02:12 PM PDT

We have some excellent news for all those Galaxy S III fans with the international variation. While Samsung has detailed the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean multiple times today we have the absolute latest version direct from Sammy. We got a look at the Jelly Bean update at IFA this week but today it has leaked again and is as fresh as it gets.

Yup, this is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Samsung Galaxy S III. It was leaked this morning and even includes a build date of September 3rd. This means this is the absolute latest and newest version right from Samsung and could very well be the final OTA update. A few developer devices got the OTA update so this is as good as it gets — for now.

As usual we can thank those sneaky guys over at XDA-Developers for the build. It has leaked and is ready for users to enjoy right this minute. Sadly this is only for the international Galaxy S III and won’t work with US models for now. It is listed as build I9300XXDLI1 and we’re hearing it’s as official as it gets.

The official update from Samsung is probably just days away or two weeks at the most so whether or not this is worth it or not is up to you. If you love that Jelly Bean and haven’t tried any of the older leaks we’ve seen the last few weeks then hit the XDA link above to get started. As usual proceed at your own risk and of course feel free to drop us a comment once you give it a try as we’d love to hear how it goes. Wait it out or get the latest leak today and enjoy that Jelly Bean!

Motorola edge-to-edge display smartphone tipped to debut next week

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 01:10 PM PDT

This month we have tons of exciting news coming up. Motorola has more than one announcement coming and we could be seeing an awesome edge-to-edge smartphone with nearly no bezel. With Motorola set to announce two or so new devices Wednesday in New York, then Amazon this looks to be an exciting week. Then next week Motorola has another announcement along with Intel that has the rumor mills churning.

Motorola and Intel are set to unveil a brand new smartphone which will obviously be powered by Intel’s own Medfield mobile processor and we’ve seen various reports and leaks confirming exactly that. The stir however is the casual way in which they are sending out invites stating “Let us take you to the EDGE”

Combine that with Bloomberg’s recent reports that Motorola has prepared a new smartphone with nearly zero bezel around the screen, making it have an edge-to-edge display this all makes sense. Pair that with the awesome image above thanks to Android Police we are all a little excited to see what they might announce.

According to the leakster this new device was running a newer version of Android and will be making its way to Verizon Wireless with 4G LTE this year. While the Intel announcement is later this month the source also said the joint event September 5th with Verizon will be its US debut along side the DROID RAZR HD and a few other recently leaked Motorola smartphones. If they indeed announce 3 smartphones for Verizon all in one week things will be getting pretty hectic.

I’d love to see an edge-to-edge Android 4.1 Jelly Bean smartphone before the end of the year, so hopefully Motorola and Google can make it happen. Thoughts?

Rovio hints at new Angry Birds Spinoff “Bad Piggies”

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 12:19 PM PDT

Those folks at Rovio Mobile have released a new teaser trailer that many are expecting to be a completely brand new game that is a spinoff of their popular Angry Birds. It’s called Bad Piggies and this time around the birds are the ones under attack from flying pigs. Time for some bacon revenge. Who’s ready for more Angry Birds and Bad Piggies?

Those Angry Birds don’t appear to be disappearing any time soon. With many popular games on their heels like Temple Run the developers have been hard at work on their next hit. So far we aren’t sure if Bad Piggies will be another version of Angry Birds like Rio, or a completely new game with different controls and gameplay. Here’s the teaser:

They simply posted that video and have been saying “Something PIG is coming” leading us all to believe their next big thing is coming soon. So far Rovio has only released a few teaser trailers like the one we see above and haven’t revealed anything of importance.

All we know at this point is that those pigs and birds are here to stay. The video doesn’t reveal any sort of gameplay, release date, or anything else for that matter. Hopefully whatever they unveil will be announced soon and available on both Android and iOS at the same time. Who’s excited for their next game, or do you just wish this Angry Birds thing would end already?

LG Splendor coming to US Cellular according to leaks

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 11:49 AM PDT

LG and US Cellular have teamed up and will finally be bringing one of LG’s new L-series “stylish” phones to the US with what we’ve previously known as the Optimus L7. The image below was quickly spotted on LG’s website and was immediately pulled, but not before the interwebs saved the image. Get ready for some LG Ice Cream Sandwich USCC.

The LG Optimus L7 isn’t anything new and this decent mid-range phone should make for a nice addition to US Cellular’s ever growing lineup of Android smartphones. The L7 should be known as the Splendor for US Cellular and comes complete with a 4.3-inch display, a 1.0 GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 4GB internal storage, and as you can see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is on board.

Sadly we still aren’t seeing Jelly Bean devices out of the box yet, except for the Galaxy Note II, so most likely USCC customers will be waiting for that update to arrive from LG. The smartphone has been available for a few months internationally, and was initially announced back in February where we enjoyed some hands-on time with the ICS-touting device.

With the Optimus L7 being available for a few months already outside of the US, we expect this to be arriving relatively soon on US Cellular. No details, pricing, or other information has been made available at this time but we expect to hear more soon. With the device now out in the wild US Cellular should be confirming it soon. We expect it to launch sometime this month for back-to-school sales. Hopefully it comes soon and with a low price too.
