Google Revamps the Android Marketplace Online

Posted: 17 May 2010 10:22 AM PDT

This is a long time coming, that’s for sure. The previous version of the online Android Marketplace, the one that you could search from your computer, hasn’t always been the best representation of the digital marketplace. Not by a long-shot. The layout wasn’t all that great, and it didn’t do a very good job of showing what was even available. Google finally realized it was time for a change, and they’ve made it happen.

The online version of the Android Marketplace has got a pretty good aesthetic tweak over the weekend, and thankfully even its usability has increased. You can still see the Top Paid, Top Free, and Featured applications, but now the navigation tabs are at the top of the page. You’ll get a nice little app icon still, but now you can simply scroll up and down in any particular section, without having to worry about dragging the bottom of the screen to the left or right.

Unfortunately, there’s still no search box. Which has to be the most frustrating part of this, considering where this is coming from. Google, add a search box to your online Android Marketplace. This is something that should be pretty obvious. Also, we’d like a way to see all the applications available in the Marketplace, and not just the top versions of a particular pay-scale. Featured is great, but we would still like to show off the Market outside of our phones.

HTC Hero with Cox Branding Gets Purchased on Craigslist

Posted: 17 May 2010 10:10 AM PDT

Yes, Cox Cable is working on a wireless service. Slowly, but surely, the cable providers wants to have their own niche market, and if these screenshots from Android Central are any indicator, then it looks like the company was using an Android-based device for testing. Sure, it could mean that the company plans on launching the wireless service with the CDMA HTC Hero as part of their wireless line-up, but for now, we’ll just chalk this one up to testing.

There’s no physical branding on the handset. It looks exactly like the Sprint version of the HTC Hero, but obviously without any logos on the front or back. It was purchased off Craig’s List for $230 (which is probably a very, very good deal), and it features several ways to see the Cox branding within the device. For example, it has a Cox boot screen, which we will admit is a bit strange for just a test device. Additionally, digging into the Settings menu shows Cox as the network provider.

It was only able to run on a CDMA network of 1xRTT (the source said he wasn’t able to get it running on any 3G networks). Additionally, as we’ve probably come to expect, the device is running Android 1.5. There’s absolutely nothing official about this, so for now you’ll have to keep that salt shaker handy, but at least it’s a sign of something that could come down the pipe soon.

HTC Wildfire entry-level Android debuts

Posted: 17 May 2010 04:14 AM PDT

HTC have unveiled their latest Android smartphone, the HTC Wildfire, and it’s an entry-level model that looks to replace the little-loved HTC Tattoo.  Packing a 3.2-inch QVGA capacitive touchscreen, European 3G/UMTS support, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and HTC Sense, the Wildfire looks like a cross between a Desire and a Google Nexus One.

As for Sense, that has a couple of new features including displaying a contact’s latest Facebook status update along with their photo whenever you call them or they call you.  There’s also a new app called Application Sharing, which allows you to quickly let friends know about software you’re enjoying on your phone: after picking the title from a list, you can share it via SMS, email, Twitter or whatever other social networking tools you have on your phone.

HTC Wildfire hands-on:

According to HTC’s Eric Lin, the Wildfire “makes good on the promise of the Tattoo… [it's] much better executed.”  That not only makes for a better phone for the end-user, but one that’s cheaper for HTC to produce (meaning a cheaper MRSP) but that uses better quality components.  The Wildfire has the same 528MHz CPU as the HTC Hero, but with HTC having stripped out the 3D animations from Sense it keeps things moving reasonably quickly.  There’s also a microSD card slot under the battery cover and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge.  The battery is a 1,300mAh pack, though HTC aren’t quoting estimated runtimes as yet.

The HTC Desire will be available in Q3 2010, in black, white, red and brown; no word on pricing at this stage, though HTC tell us they’re aiming for the entry-level “my first smartphone” market.

KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE WITH HTC WILDFIRETM

Share apps, updates and experiences with the latest social powerhouse from HTC

HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced HTC Wildfire™, a new HTC Sense-based Android phone that integrates the most popular social networks to help bring your friends closer to you. HTC Wildfire closely follows the success of the acclaimed HTC Desire and makes the company's signature HTC Sense experience accessible to a younger audience.

"Today's social networks provide an essential forum for friendship with more than 400 million users* – many of whom are young adults – actively sharing their lives with their friends through Facebook," said Florian Seiche, Vice President, HTC EMEA. "HTC Wildfire makes the HTC Sense experience available to young mobile users for the first time. It brings all your communications into one place, whether it's through Facebook, Twitter, text messages, images or email, ensuring that you are never far away from the conversation and always close to your friends."

HTC Wildfire helps you stay connected with those who are most important to you through HTC Sense, a user experience focused on putting people at the centre by making phones work in a more simple and natural way. You won't miss out on the fun as HTC's Friend Stream application seamlessly gathers and displays content from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr into one organised stream of updates. HTC Wildfire enables you to stay up to date with your friends' posts, comments, alerts and photos, wherever you are.

In addition, each contact viewed in HTC Wildfire's address book includes a thread of recent communications with that person, including when you last spoke, recent text messages and emails, and social network updates. When your friend calls, HTC Caller ID displays their Facebook profile photo and latest update, as well as a reminder if their birthday is fast approaching.

Thanks to a new app sharing widget, HTC Wildfire enables you to recommend an application by email, text message or over social networks. Your friends will receive a link allowing them to find the application on the Android Market with a single click and download it to their phone.

Florian Seiche continued, "We understand that people need a better way to navigate their way through the tens of thousands of applications that are currently available on the Android Market. In fact, our own independent research found that consumers are not only hungry for the latest and most popular applications that their friends are using, they want an easier way to find and download them. For the first time ever, you can recommend the newest and coolest apps to a friend or group of friends with HTC Wildfire. With so many applications to choose from, there's a world of content to discover and pass along to your friends."

HTC's latest advanced smartphone is great for viewing and sharing photos on Flickr and for surfing the internet thanks to its 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen. A five-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash allows you to capture special moments, while a 3.5mm audio jack and micro SD card slot mean you are never without your favourite songs.

Availability
The new HTC Wildfire will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets from Q3 2010.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 rooted

Posted: 17 May 2010 01:01 AM PDT

Good news if you’re a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 owner today, with word coming out of xda-developers that the Android handset has finally been rooted.  It’s not an ideal solution, at least not yet – it requires SETool, a flashing system that runs on dedicated hardware – but the guys there are hoping that it’s the first step in delivering a software-based system.

As for what you can achieve with your rooted X10, there are already custom ROMs being cooked up that delete Sony Ericsson’s system-dominating social networking apps, that add extra access to the underlying Android OS, and more.  We’ll be keeping an eye on things for a software-based root method.

This is an awesome app, it brings extra functionality to Android's camera. Some of these features probably should've been included natively in Android. Not only is this app really good it is also a fun app to play with. There's a Fisheye setting, Polaroid and SymmetriCam, SymmetriCam is my favorite, it displays an upside down copy of the picture you took next to the original. This is a free app in Android Market.

Droid Incredible Sold Out?

Posted: 16 May 2010 04:13 PM PDT

Recently HTC phones have been a hot commodity, their latest releases have all sold out immediately after it's released. Some of them have even sold out before they've been released. The Droid Incredible is no exception, it is currently sold out nationwide.

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam is pointing the finger at Samsung who is the manufacturer of the AMOLED display that used on the Incredible. He also states that if the Incredible was readily available he believes it would've outsold the Droid. The Incredible sold 100,000 units when it was released and shipments since then has quickly sold out also.

Verizon claims that online orders will be fulfilled by June 3rd. McAdam also said that Verizon will slow down its shipments to stores to try and keep up with online orders. Right now, ordering online may be your best chance of getting your hands on one of these.

myTouch 3G Slide Pricing

Posted: 16 May 2010 03:45 PM PDT

We've heard so much about this phone lately except for the most important aspect, the pricing. That mystery has been solved with the latest leak to our friends over at Tmonews. It's a pretty good deal if you ask me. It will be cheaper than the "Superphones" of today and given the fact that it only has a 600MHZ processor, this is a good move from T-Mobile.

This phone can be yours for only $149 on an Even More plan, this choice will give you the lowest upfront price but you have to sign a new 2 year contract. If being bound by contracts isn't your thing, you can buy it outright for $399 on the Even More Plus plan. Or you can have your Even More Plus plan broken down to $23 a month if you qualify.

Those are some pretty good pricing option for this handset, it features a new take on HTC's Sense UI dubbed Expresso. From all the leaked videos of this handset the 600MHZ doesn't slow this device down at all. June 2nd was the initial rumored release date of this device4. The new rumored release date is 16th. We'll keep an eye out for more solid information on a release date.

How To Turn Off Sense on The EVO 4G

Posted: 16 May 2010 11:12 AM PDT

One of the best features of Sense UI devices is the ability to turn it off and use Vanilla Android. For some reason there are a few newer Sense devices that don't allow this. Luckily the EVO isn't one of them, you can turn off Sense in the HTC EVO 4G.

This feature has been disabled in the Incredible from Verizon. Verizon for some odd reason choose to omit the stock home launcher completely so even if you try this method on the Incredible it will just reload Sense automatically. Some folks like the look of regular Android more than Sense, they will have the option to choose their UI on the EVO. I would use both versions, this device has a lot of flexibility.
