Android on HD2 hack one step closer [Video]

Posted: 18 May 2010 03:30 AM PDT

Progress on getting Android installed on the HTC HD2 continues apace, with the latest milestone being a booting build of Linux and the ability to load a video from the command line.  The project – being managed over at xda-developers – can’t currently get the GUI to load, but the booting kernel does pave the way for a full install of Google’s open-source platform.

Even without specific drivers running, the hardware and the Linux kernel are capable of churning through 720p HD video playback as you can see in the footage below.  There’s still plenty of work left to do – not least come up with drivers for sound, graphics, Bluetooth, GPS, phone and more – but the promised land of dual-booting between Windows Mobile and Android does look to be a little further within reach.

Free Android Kindle app coming this Summer

Posted: 18 May 2010 03:22 AM PDT

Amazon has confirmed that their Kindle for Android ereader app will be released this summer, offering Android device users the chance to not only read existing titles on their smartphones but to buy them and download them direct to the handset.  The new app will also use Amazon’s WhisperNet technology to synchronize all copies of the ebook – whether on a dedicated Kindle, or being read on another Kindle app – up to the last-read point.

Amazon currently offer versions of the Kindle app for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and BlackBerry, together with Mac and PC versions.  However not all are integrated with the retailer’s ebook store for on-device purchases.  The app itself will be a free download; you can sign up for status updates on its release here.

Samsung Galaxy S Promo Video

Posted: 17 May 2010 02:21 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy S has created a lot of buzz around the web. There's still no official word on when this device will hit the market here in the US. Initial reports have the "Superphone" slated for release on all the major carriers here. This promo video gives you a few things to look forward to if you decide to purchase one.

The video highlights the different ways you can use this device. At home there's the usual alarm clock, the Galaxy S will have a "smart alarm" feature and of course widgets on your desktop that updates with the latest news and weather. On the road Google Maps is featured and SWYPE makes an appetence as well for all you heavy SMS users.

Joining the 4.0" Super AMOLED screen will be 16GB's of onboard storage. This phone will also have the ability to be used as a remote for you television. HD video recording is also highlighted and my favorite part of this promo video is the ability to share things via DLNA. For those of you that don't know, most modern Samsung televisions use DLNA to share video, picture and other files either wireless or wired on your home network. This device is shaping up to be quite a nice piece of work.
