Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to get UXP upgrade in Q4 2010 Posted: 21 May 2010 09:01 AM PDT This is good news for all you X10 owners, Sony has just confirmed Android 2.1 for the X10 in Q4. Not only will it get Android 2.1 but it will also receive a few other enhancements. This device is one of the best multimedia Android devices. The X10 Mini and Pro may receive the update shortly after the original.
For those of you that don't know, UXP is Sony's custom UI. Most of us know this as Rachael, it is laid on top of Android and gives the X10 family it distinct look. Although it looks really good and performs as advertised, this is the main reason why updates will be delayed. But, this update will bring many cool new features to the X10. Listed below is what you can expect from this update.
These enhancements are great but 2.1 in Q4? By then most Android devices will be running 2.2 and "Gingerbread" is rumored to be released in Q4. Is Sony trying on purpose to stay behind? Hopefully with the announcement of 2.2 Sony will focus of bring that to the X10 instead of 2.1. Although the X10 has enough processor and ROM, it might not have enough RAM to run 2.2. Sony has botched this device from day one and hopefully they don't make the same mistakes if they decide to introduce another Android into the market. [via sony] |
Samsung Galaxy 5 Spotted in The Wild Posted: 21 May 2010 08:40 AM PDT Samsung has another Android device in the works, the Galaxy 5 or the GT-I5500 will be hitting the streets soon. This little device packs in Android 2.1 along with a few other features. This device hasn't really been covered much with all the excitement around the EVO and the Galaxy S so it may be something new for most of you out there.
As mentioned earlier, this will be another 2.1 device. It also has a QVGA TFT capacitive display, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WI-Fi, 3G and a microSd card slot. Not mind blowing specs by any means but if you're in the market for a low-end Android 2.1 device this may the phone for you. This handset is expected to retail for around 200 Euros. The rumored release is sometime in July. Expect this device to also come preloaded with Samsung's TouchWiz UI, hopefully it will be the same version that is on the Galaxy S. [via ubergizmo] |
Download Android for the iPhone 3G Now Posted: 21 May 2010 08:21 AM PDT If you have an old iPhone lying around you can now dust it off and free it from its Apple prison. This ongoing project by modder David Wang is now ready for download. You've seen it on video a few times now you can load Android up your iPhone now.
Although you can perform most task that you'd expect from an Android phone, this port is not recommended for day to day use. Your phone will die in about an hour due to Android power management function not being fully operational yet. This port is more for show and proof of concept in its current state. I'm sure the few kinks left will be worked out soon enough. In similar fashion to the iPhone 2G port, this works on the same dual boot setup. Your iPhone will need to be jailbroken before undertaking this project. But be warned, if you're a novice at this stuff you may want to pass on attempting this. There are almost 30 steps in the process. Install instructions are here, enjoy. [via pc world] |
HTC Vision Marries the HTC Desire with Physical QWERTY Keyboard Posted: 21 May 2010 08:09 AM PDT There’s no doubt that the HTC high-end devices out there are lacking one thing or another, but for most, that thing would be a physical keyboard. While HTC has done a bang-up job of making their software version easily accessible and fun to use, there’s just something about being able to feel keys give way under your touch. Apparently HTC has been listening, because sure enough, it looks like they may have something in the works to make everyone happy.
Thanks to the company’s website, some crafty people were able to find mention of the HTC Vision (along with the HTC LED and HTC Glacier), which, according to the lucky folks, features a profile that is very similar to the current generation HTC Desire. Except with a physical keyboard. Now, if they are the same, then we’d see a 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, HTC’s Sense User Interface (that’s pretty much a given at this point), and Android 2.1 (probably). On the back, they’d probably have a camera anywhere between 5MP and 8MP, but might surprise us all. We do have to say that Android 2.2 is far more likely. If the HTC Vision (which is an internal code name) does exist, then it probably won’t come out for a few months. Perfect timing to launch Android 2.2, if you ask us. [via SlashGear] |
Samsung Galaxy S Gaming Demo – Video Posted: 21 May 2010 07:58 AM PDT Since the discovery of the Hummingbird GPU that is embedded in the Galaxy S, we've heard that this GPU will deliver home console like graphics and game play. Until now none of us had seen this device in action. Does it live up to the hype? I think it does, video is after the break.
Our friends over at Frandroid got their hands on a Galaxy S and recorded this video of it in action. The game being played is Nova from Gameloft. From what I can see, it performs as advertised. This game has a lot of action and there is no lag at all. The graphics looks really good and the game play is fluid and fast. Check out the video below, you is the judge. |
Android 2.2 for Nexus One in “next few weeks”; HTC update in 2H 2010 Posted: 21 May 2010 02:35 AM PDT
According to the official Google IO Twitter account, Android 2.2 Froyo will arrive on the Nexus One within the “next few weeks“. As for HTC themselves, they’ll apparently be “most likely” offering updates to their 2010 model year handsets, kicking off with the HTC Desire in Europe and the Droid Incredible in the US. However, no release is expected until the second half of 2010, as they work on polishing HTC Sense for the new OS.
Bad news for T-Mobile G1 owners, however, with the apparent confirmation that the first-generation Android handset won’t get an official OS 2.2 update. However, salvation may be at hand from modder Haykuro who is working on an unofficial G1 ROM. |
Google’s Android is Innovation for Everyone: a Report Card Posted: 20 May 2010 11:58 AM PDT With all this talk about Android 2.2, Google TV, and the future of Android as a platform, we wanted to take a moment and talk about the success that Google has had with Android. Because, let’s face it, if it weren’t for this success, we wouldn’t be talking about any of the new innovations coming in the near future, now would we? Much like any other conference or keynote, Google wanted to touch on the milestones that Android has brought the Mountain View company, and we’re happy to bring them to you here.
As all of you are more than probably aware, it’s been 18 months since Android launched. And since then, there’s been all sorts of releases. In fact, we’re looking at 60 Android compatible devices, from 21 OEMS, in 48 countries, on 59 different carriers. Pretty impressive numbers, to say the least. How does that look when you’re trying to figure out how many Android devices are going off the store shelves per day? Google is proud to announce that they’ve now eclipsed that 30,000 per day milestone, and have reached 100,000 Android devices being sold per day. As for that free turn-by-turn navigation that Google launched six months ago? Well, apparently the company as a whole made a goal to reach 1 and a half million miles traveled using their software. Of course, in standard Google fashion, they completely blew that out of the water, and have now, in a six month time period, racked up 1 billion miles traveled with their Navigation. And lastly, and something near and dear to any Android device owner, are the applications. Google, preaching praise to the over 180,000 developers out there in the world, have announced that they’ve successfully surpassed 50,000 Android applications in the Android Marketplace. All in all, it looks like Google’s little ‘droid is doing very, very well for itself, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon. Now, enjoy the official Android 2.2, “Froyo,” video below, while we all prepare for its impending launch. |
