Sony NEX-5 official: first Alpha with HD video

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:32 PM PDT

The Sony NEX-5: that’s the official name for the tasty ultra portable Alpha “DSLR” concept we saw on show at the PMA photography show earlier this year. It’s beautiful, slim, has interchangeable lenses, and at long last, packs HD video recording. We’re live at Sony’s press conference in Croatia where it’s being unveiled, and we’ve got all the details on it right here, along with its new little brother, the Sony NEX-3.

The Sony NEX-5’s shaping up to be a tidy rival to Panasonic and Olympus‘ Micro Four Thirds cameras. The 24.2mm thin body houses a new 14.2 megapixel APS HD CMOS sensor and a processor capable of churning through seven frames per second, plus a three inch tilting LCD screen on the back, and slots for both Sony’s Memory Stick cards, and the more widely used SD/SDHC/SDXC format.

Marking a first for Sony’s Alpha line, the Sony NEX-5 records 1080i HD video, while the Sony NEX-3 shoots lower resolution 720p video. Both models have HDMI out to plug straight into a flatscreen and check out your shots and footage straight away. Both also pack the impressive Sweep Panorama shot stitching mode as seen in Sony’s latest compacts, like the HX5V, but it steps things up a bit with a “3D” option, shooting left and right eye points of view as you scan with just one sensor. We loved the 2D sweep Panorama option, so we’re hopeful it’s just as good.

Sony Alpha compact DSLR camera due this year!

The Sony NEX-5 and Sony NEX-3 will both be sold with new lenses, but what might make them even more tempting for current Alpha fans is an optional mount adaptor to use current Alpha DSLR lenses, meaning you may only have to splash out on the body.

We’re told the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 will go on sale in the Summer, but we’ll be going hands on with both models later today so stay tuned for more coverage.

What do you want to know about the Sony NEX-5? Let us know in the comments below, and we’ll be sure to ask Sony’s top execs when we test it out for ourselves.

LittleBigPlanet 2 video trailer revealed

Posted: 10 May 2010 07:30 AM PDT

LittleBigPlanet 2 has broken cover with a LittleBigPlanet 2 video trailer revealing a whole lot more features. This time Sackboy will be free to star in more than just platform games and you'll be able to add AI characters. Read on for the first details on LittleBigPlanet 2

LittleBigPlanet 2 includes a brand new game-making engine which explains why Media Molecule feels justified in making a sequel to a LittleBigPlanet, a game that already had lots of free content floating around the web.

There's already 2m LittleBigPlanet levels uploaded to the Playstation Network which will be compatible with the new game. However, LittleBigPlanet 2 will increase the possibilities for level creation. The LittleBigPlanet 2 video shows top-down racing games and a Space Invaders-esque shooter.

LittleBigPlanet 2 also opens up the environment so you'll be able to control objects other than Sackboy and place Sackbots, AI characters with movements you can record or define, into levels.

Playstation Move integration is also strongly rumoured to be headed for LittleBigPlanet 2. We can expect to hear more details about LittleBigPlanet 2 at E3 next month.

Alan Wake 2 plot already planned

Posted: 10 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT

Alan Wake is even out until Friday but the developers at Remedy are already teasing the next installment of the mystery. We knew already knew they're hard at work on the first batch of Alan Wake DLC but it seems the full second episode has been plotted out too…

Remedy's Oskari Hakkinen said Alan Wake 2 has been planned out. He says: "We do know where season two is going to go. Season one will have a conclusive and satisfactory ending but we will leave doors open for season two and we know where we're going to take the story."

Sam Lake, one of the writers of Alan Wake, previously confessed that they had not worked out how a definitive Alan Wake ending. It’s fairly likely that Alan Wake 2 isn’t the last part of the saga.

And given that we first heard about Alan Wake in 2005, we'll reserve judgment on Remedy's forward planning with Alan Wake 2 until we actually see it.

Are you planning on picking up Alan Wake when it hits shops on Friday? Let us know whether games episodic adventures like it and Heavy Rain have captured your imagination.

Due Friday | £49.99 | Alan Wake (via CVG)

Blinkbox PS3 movie streaming launched

Posted: 10 May 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Blinkbox is bringing its movie streaming service to the PS3, beating Lovefilm to punch with console streaming and putting itself in direct competition with the Playstation Video Store. Can Blinkbox find a place in British PS3 owners hearts just as Netflix has staked its claim on US gamers’ affections?

Blinkbox has had a movie streaming site serving up films and TV to laptops and home PCs since 2009. But its new PS3 movie streaming site is designed to work smoothly with the PS3's internet browser with controls optimised for a gamepad.

Blinkbox also claims the PS3 movie streaming webpage will automatically resize itself to fit your TV screen whether you're packing a seriously hefty HD TV or a pokey portable.

Blinkbox has signed deals with studios including Universal, Warner Bros and Paramount so you'll find recent films including The Hangover,  Inglorious Basterds and The Informant as well as TV shows like Shameless and the League of Gentleman.

Rental prices for the Blinkbox movie streaming service start at £0.99 for films and £0.39 an episode for TV shows. You can stream those videos directly from blinkbox.com an unlimited number of times within a 24 hour period which starts from when you first play them.

Buy a video which start on Blinkbox from £0.89 for a TV episode and £2.99 for movies and its stored in an online library. You can then stream it an unlimited number of times to your PS3 or PC.

iPad printing support confirmed by Steve Jobs

Posted: 10 May 2010 05:30 AM PDT

iPad is definitely the word of the day with iPad UK preorders open and iPad UK 3G data plans to unpick. And once again Steve Jobs has revealed a forthcoming iPad feature in one of his extremely economical emails. Eager for iPad printing support? Read on for Steve Jobs's latest Buddha-like pronouncement…

The last Steve Jobs email that slipped out into the wild took on Android but this time he's back on Apple's own products, responding to a customer query about iPad printer support. With no ports to let you just plug your iPad into a printer, you're currently stuck sending documents via email or the iPad iTunes filesharing feature.

That's clearly frustrating one Apple fan who fired off an email simply asking: "Dear Steve, why no iPad printing? What gives?" Steve Jobs replied in similarly short order with the philosophical statement: "It will come."

That three word answer from Steve Jobs isn't all that helpful but does give extra credence to investigations of iPhone OS 4.0 that suggested iPad printing was on the way.

The support pages for iWork also currently state: "Printing directly from iPad is not currently available." Those last three words combined with the Steve Jobs email say we can expect iPad printing soon.

What other features do want added to the iPad? And what would email Steve Jobs?

Nintendo 3DS will have 2D mode

Posted: 10 May 2010 04:00 AM PDT

The Nintendo 3DS will have one obvious new selling point: 3D gaming. But to stave off concerns about the potential health effects of spending hours peering at a pokey 3D screen, Nintendo has revealed that it will also offer a 2D mode. But doesn't that entirely defeat the object of the whole thing?

Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, told Forbes that the 3D functions of Nintendo DS successor will be simple to switch off. Nintendo promised that the new pocket gamer would be backwards compatible when it announced the Nintendo 3DS so it's not really a massive surprise.

Switching between 3D and 2D gaming could cause headaches for developers planning to bring new 3D games to the Nintendo 3DS. On the other hand, easily being able to switch into 2D mode could allow for a brighter screen image, easier to read text and a wider viewing angle.

Nintendo has a history of 3D gaming. It's Virtual Boy system, which offered 3D gaming way back in 1995, was widely claimed to cause headaches. The ability to move between 2D and 3D increases the likelihood that Nintendo 3DS screen will use Sharp's parallex barrier technology as it allows for the 3D layer to be simply switched off.

Are you excited about the Nintendo 3DS or does adding an extra-dimension to Mario not make much of a difference to you?

Macbook Air update due tomorrow?

Posted: 10 May 2010 03:30 AM PDT

The Macbook Air could be next in line for an update if new rumours are right. The ultra-slim laptop missed out on a refresh during the recent Macbook Pro love-in and has been largely unnoticed in all hubbub surrounding the iPad. Will Apple really unveil a new Macbook Air this week?

The same source which tipped off Macworld Australia about the arrival of the new Macbook Pro has spotted a new product number on an Apple database and most signs point to a new Macbook Air.

There's some speculation that the product number could just be pointing to a new 27in LED cinema display to match the 27in iMac. But with the rumours suggesting several thousand of the new product are being shipped to Australia, a new Macbook Air seems a lot more likely.

Macworld's mysterious source suggests that the new product will be announced tomorrow. Apple does usually like to reveal new products on a Tuesday but it has only just opened up iPad preorders.

The Macbook Air is due for a refresh. It was last updated in June 2009 with an improved processor. But does it still look as alluring now the iPad has arrived?

Let us know whether you think the Macbook Air is worth the moolah. We'll keep our eyes trained on the Apple Store tomorrow for news of a new arrival. With the Sony Vaio P newly refreshed, this could be a week for luxury laptop overhauls.
